The videos were captured through a series of research projects studying the same student sample, from first grade through high school, 1992 to the present. The collection consists of video clips edited to highlight evidence of student reasoning and effective teaching practices as well as raw footage suitable for education and child development research. Additional video from 1,350 hours of raw footage continue to be added to this unique and growing collection. 30+ dissertations, 50+ articles and two books, with two additional books in production have resulted from research using this collection.

The net.art generator automatically produces net.art on demand.

nag_05-this version of the net.art generator creates images. The resulting image emerges as a collage of a number of images which have been collected on the WWW in relation to the 'title' you have chosen. The original material is processed in 12-14 randomly chosen and combined steps. For finding the images, nag_05 draws on Google search; that is the delicate part as Google limits access to their search results for all non-paying clients including net.art projects like this one.

The technical base of the net.art generator is a PERL script, old but reliable technology. The original version was programmed by Panos Galanis from IAP GmbH, Hamburg, in 2003 after an idea by net.artist Cornelia Sollfrank. With Winnie Soon, the net.art generator has found a skillful new master of creative coding in 2017.

It's impossible to use Twitter without JavaScript enabled, and as of 2024 you need to sign up. For privacy-minded folks, preventing JavaScript analytics and IP-based tracking is important, but apart from using a VPN and uBlock/uMatrix, it's impossible. Despite being behind a VPN and using heavy-duty adblockers, you can get accurately tracked with your browser's fingerprint, no JavaScript required. This all became particularly important after Twitter removed the ability for users to control whether their data gets sent to advertisers.

Using an instance of Nitter (hosted on a VPS for example), you can browse Twitter without JavaScript while retaining your privacy. In addition to respecting your privacy, Nitter is on average around 15 times lighter than Twitter, and in most cases serves pages faster (eg. timelines load 2-4x faster).

Podcasting 2.0 extends the RSS standard - the core technology that makes podcasting possible - to add new features. Some of these new features, like recommendations for other podcasts your audience might like, can be added to podcast feeds simply by adding the appropriate RSS tags. Many publishing tools and hosting providers make this as simple as filling in additional field.

Eight hundred of them, give or take, form a small jazz combo (walking bass, piano, sax, vibes, brushes) that has been playing without pause for over a hundred years. On the platforms they are hot, screaming, full of complaint. This is the music inside the noise.

The harmony moves through a slow chorus. A note is placed precisely where the train happens to be along its route. Rush hour fills the band with held tones; at 3 a.m. the silences grow longer. Whatever is playing now has not played before and will not play again.

Share your location and the trains nearest you grow louder. The piece rearranges itself around your body. You are listening to a portrait of where you stand, played by the city you are standing in.

He doesn't need playlists or a store or social features. He needs big buttons, a simple layout, and something that remembers where he was when he falls asleep halfway through a chapter.

The app has a URL scheme so I can manage his library remotely. I can send him a new book or free up space on his phone without having to talk him through it. He just has to tap a link.

On July 8, 1989, a young music fan named Aadam Jacobs, with a compact Sony cassette recorder in his pocket, went to see an up-and-coming rock band from Washington for their debut show in Chicago.

After a blast of guitar feedback, 22-year-old Kurt Cobain politely announced to the crowd at the small club called Dreamerz: “Hello, we’re Nirvana. We’re from Seattle.” With that, the band, then a quartet, launched into the riff-heavy first song, “School.”

Jacobs surreptitiously recorded the performance, documenting the fledgling band in raw, fiery form more than two years before Nirvana’s global breakthrough with the album “Nevermind.”

Jacobs went on to record more than 10,000 concerts, with increasingly sophisticated equipment, over four decades in Chicago and other cities. Now a group of devoted volunteers in the U.S. and Europe is methodically cataloging, digitizing and uploading them one by one.

The growing Aadam Jacobs Collection is an internet treasure trove for music lovers, especially for fans of indie and punk rock during the 1980s through the early 2000s, when the scene blossomed and became mainstream. The collection features early-in-their-career performances from alternative and experimental artists like R.E.M., The Cure, The Pixies, The Replacements, Depeche Mode, Stereolab, Sonic Youth and Björk.

Compare CJK characters between regions.

CJK stands for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. All of these languages have incorporated Chinese characters into their writing systems. They are called Hanzi in Chinese, Kanji in Japanese and Hanja in Korean. They display some characters differently.

Historically, this has also included Vietnamese, which is why they are sometimes referred to as “CJKV” characters.

What is Han Unification?

Han unification is the process by which Unicode mapped Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese (CJK) characters into a single set of unified characters. It was controversial, in part because it merged characters that were displayed slightly differently in each language, so that they had to share the same code point.

The resulting character set is sometimes called “Unihan”. For a computer to decide which regional version of a character to display, it has to rely on clues from the environment, such as the device’s region settings and the language of the page content.

This is why we have this tool, so you can compare them at a glance.

It is serverless, but you can run it on your own hardware or any platform you choose. Plugins are securely sandboxed and can run in their own isolate, via Dynamic Workers, solving the fundamental security problem with the WordPress plugin architecture. And under the hood, EmDash is powered by Astro, the fastest web framework for content-driven websites.

EmDash is fully open source, MIT licensed, and available on GitHub. While EmDash aims to be compatible with WordPress functionality, no WordPress code was used to create EmDash. That allows us to license the open source project under the more permissive MIT license. We hope that allows more developers to adapt, extend, and participate in EmDash’s development.

Back in 2023, I worked with a team on a project called TrustSense. An AI tool to help people figure out whether an email, social post, or article was trying to manipulate or deceive them. The project emerged from Carnegie Mellon’s Generative AI Innovation Incubator hackathon. This was a three-track series organized through CMU’s School of Computer Science, focused on Medicine and Health, Education and the Future of Work, and Finance and Economics.

I worked across multiple tracks. In the Finance and Economics track, our team built TrustSense and reached the final round. I documented the full build across five posts as we went: the introduction, the steps involved in building it, the quest for trustworthy training data, how we thought about user privacy, and how we tested different AI models.

That last post is worth mentioning here because it’s directly relevant to what changed between then and now. In 2023, we tried Llama 2, and it hallucinated constantly, lacked explainability, and we couldn’t reliably control its output. We tried GPT-3.5 but ran into token limits during the hackathon. We ended up building a custom LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) model with a LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) explainer on top.

In plain English, this means that it could be trained specifically to read emails and spot patterns. On top of that, we added a tool that could show its work. Instead of just saying “this email is suspicious,” it could highlight the specific words and phrases that triggered the warning. We didn’t want a black box that gave you an answer you had to trust blindly. We wanted something that could point at the email and say: “It’s this line here, and this one.”

A few weeks ago, I rebuilt it. Alone. Over a weekend. Using AI running entirely on my laptop.

I’m not saying that to sound impressive. I’m saying it because the gap between what that took in 2023 and what it takes now is kind of staggering, and I think it matters for anyone trying to stay on top of what AI can actually do. Not the hype, but the practical reality.

There's no way to know for sure if a site is maintained by a real human or if it's just slop. The only way to know for sure is by getting to know the authors, which usually takes time and requires developing a relationship with them through other channels, like email or social media. But what if we could expand that trust by building a web of vouches between sites?

human.json is a protocol based on that trust. It works the following way:

You declare yourself to be a human and your commitment to avoid AI-generated content, by posting a human.json file somewhere on your site and linking to it with
. The presence of this file indicates that the content of your site was generated by you, not AI. The impulse was simpler than a philosophy: every RSS reader I tried made me feel bad. Not because the apps were ugly or broken (most were quite good) but because they all seemed to agree on something I didn't. That reading the internet was a task. That articles were items to be processed. That falling behind was a failure state.

Every RSS reader I've used presents your feeds as a list to be processed. Items arrive. They're marked unread. Your job is to get that number to zero, or at least closer to zero than it was yesterday.

Current has no unread count. Not because I forgot to add one, or because I thought it would look cleaner without it. There is no count because counting was the problem.

The main screen is a river. Not a river that moves on its own. You're not watching content drift past like a screensaver. It's a river in the sense that matters: content arrives, lingers for a time, and then fades away.

Originally seen in iTunes and Mac OS X Finder, Cover Flow let users flip through items as if browsing a tangible collection.

Today, we can recreate this effect on the web using only HTML and CSS, thanks to advancements like CSS scroll-driven animations.

In this article, we’ll briefly revisit the history of Cover Flow and traditional implementation methods, then dive into a modern CSS approach inspired by Bramus’ pure-CSS demo - I also have a React version available. We’ll explore how features like CSS Scroll Snap and the new Scroll-Driven Animations API (scroll timelines and the view() function) combine to deliver a smooth Cover Flow without heavy JavaScript. Along the way, we’ll look at code snippets, compare other recent techniques, and discuss performance and accessibility considerations.

Crucial Tracks is a music journal with a simple idea: share the important songs in your life. Every member gets one post per calendar day. Use a daily prompt or pick any subject you'd like!
One song per day also means an stress-free, "slow social" music community: no endless feed to scroll and no fear of missing out.

This year I tested it. Two AI coding agents, 11,345 receipts. I started with eggs. If you can track one item across 25 years of garbled thermal prints, OCR failures, and folder typos, you can track anything.

14 days. 1.6 billion tokens. 589 egg receipts found. Here’s what the data says.

Today, we’re introducing my.WordPress.net, a new take on that idea designed for a new generation of creators.

With my.WordPress.net, WordPress runs entirely and persistently in your browser. There’s no sign-up, no hosting plan, and no domain decision standing between you and getting started. Built on WordPress Playground, my.WordPress.net takes the same technology that powers instant WordPress demos and turns it into something permanent and personal. This isn’t a temporary environment meant to be discarded. It’s a WordPress that stays with you.

When you open my.WordPress.net, you’re placed directly into a complete WordPress environment that runs entirely in your browser. What makes this approach meaningful is not just where WordPress runs, but how it changes the relationship between people and the software itself. By removing the need to sign up or make early decisions about hosting and visibility, my.WordPress.net reframes WordPress as a space you can enter and work within, rather than a service you have to configure before you begin.

Python from productivity needs. If models become the primary authors of software, it follows that languages should adapt to that.

The biggest problem models face isn't syntax it's coherence over scale. Models struggle with maintaining invariants across a codebase, understanding the ripple effects of changes, and reasoning about state over time. They're pattern matchers optimising for local plausibility, not architects holding the entire system in mind.

Vera addresses this by making everything explicit and verifiable. The model doesn't need to be right, it just needs to be checkable.

A Complete Guide to Bookmarklets | CSS-Tricks

A JavaScript script saved as a bookmark is called a “bookmarklet,” although some people also use the term “favelet” or “favlet.” Bookmarklets have been around since the late 90s. The site that coined them, bookmarklets.com, even remains around today. They’re simple and versatile, a fact evidenced by most of the bookmarklets listed on the aforementioned site are still working today despite being untouched for over two decades.

While bookmarklets have fallen a bit to the wayside in more recent years as browsers have grown more capable and dev tools have matured, they’re still a valuable tool in any web developer’s arsenal. They’re simple but capable, and no additional software is needed to create or use them. If you watch any good machinist or engineer at work, they’re constantly building tools and utilities, even one-off contraptions, to address problems or come to a more graceful solution as they work. As developers, we should endeavor to do the same, and bookmarklets are a perfect way to facilitate such a thing.
