From Fragmentation to Collaboration: Data Sharing in Philanthropy Moderated by Jack O'Neill (Philea) & Lucia Gomez (University of Geneva) In this roundtable discussion, we will explore conditions and practical steps for philanthropic organizations and researchers to begin exchanging data about philanthropic giving, funding gaps, and best practices in a collaborative, yet secure, manner. Recognising that data is often fragmented and scattered across academic articles and reports by philanthropic organisations, we will discuss how the field and researchers can start by sharing high-level, aggregated data through standardised dashboards or templates, focusing on areas such as funding priorities, geographic impact, and thematic focus. We’ll also address key concerns around privacy and control, ensuring that sensitive data can be shared in an anonymised or aggregated form. The conversation will also discuss how pilot initiatives could help build trust and demonstrate the value of data sharing for identifying funding gaps, avoiding duplication, and improving decision-making.

Yet the foundation’s activities remain largely below the public’s radar, the extent of its malign history mostly unknown. This should change. America today faces a multitude of escalating sociopolitical crises that are rapidly tearing apart the body politic: a rapacious strain of tribal identity politics; spreading legal, cultural, and moral chaos; lawlessness in the streets; and the entrenchment of an oligarchic managerial elite, increasingly willing to cast aside any remaining shred of democratic or national sovereignty in its pursuit of top-down global “progress.” Behind every one of these fractures, one finds the ongoing work of the Ford Foundation.

...What the Ford Foundation has always most abhorred is the democratic will of the common man. As early as 1949, the authors of a key report setting the foundation’s core priorities were openly disdainful of democratic self-government, dismissing the “grotesque” “myth” that “any citizen of reasonable character” was qualified to make important decisions. Instead, they insisted that “at every level of government,” leadership must be placed “in the hands of those best fitted to serve.” Only “sensitive and intellectually gifted men and women” were fit to make decisions as the “competent technicians and administrators” of the country and ensure “the welfare of the general public.”

Generally, Scott has given the most grants to organizations in the U.S. South, while in the latest round, California and New York were the states with the largest number of recipient nonprofits.

Understanding Scott’s giving, which she doesn’t discuss beyond essays on her website, remains a high priority for many nonprofits dreaming of receiving one of her large, unrestricted gifts. Scott, who has pledged to give away more than half of her wealth, said she has donated more than $17.3 billion to more than 2,300 nonprofits since 2019. However, her net worth is currently about $37 billion, according to Forbes, about $2 billion more than she had after her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was finalized.

Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy built, first and foremost, a network of library buildings across the US (and internationally). He did other stuff, but a lot of it was capital projects like schools, swimming pools, that sort of thing.

MacKenzie Scott, on the other hand, is giving away huge sums of cash on a semi-regular basis. She is not overseeing construction, founding any new institutions, she is giving a huge swath of nonprofits a major cash infusion, no strings attached.

Now, there is a LOT to applaud about what Scott is doing. Compared to her peers in the billionaire class, she is a breath of fresh air, mainly for willingness to cede control over the money, to place no demands on these organizations to accommodate her. To actually center others, rather than herself.

But even with all of that, what I came to conclude is that Carnegie’s giving may have produced a better OUTCOME than Scott’s will.

“I share your feeling about this point,” I said with the fervor of conviction, “but then why not do something about the retardation of scientific progress?”

“That I would very much like to do,” Mark Gable said, “but how do I go about it?”

“Well,” I said, “I think that shouldn’t be very difficult. As a matter of fact, I think it would be quite easy. You could set up a foundation, with an annual endowment of thirty million dollars. Research workers in need of funds could apply for grants, if they could make out a convincing case. Have ten committees, each composed of twelve scientists, appointed to pass on these applications. Take the most active scientists out of the laboratory and make them members of these committees. And the very best men in the field should be appointed as chairmen at salaries of fifty thousand dollars each. Also have about twenty prizes of one hundred thousand dollars each for the best scientific papers of the year. This is just about all you would have to do. Your lawyers could easily prepare a charter for the foundation. As a matter of fact, any of the National Science Foundation bills which were introduced in the Seventy-ninth and Eightieth Congresses could perfectly well serve as a model.”

Some individuals are driven to give based on a strong sense of duty to fellow human beings and a desire for society to function fairly, sometimes referred to as “social stewardship.” Donors who see themselves as social stewards seek to support charitable causes that promote greater social stability by fostering democracy, human rights and the equitable distribution of resources.
