Snail racing is a genuine sport, and a wonderfully British one at that. Somewhere between a village fête, a sporting tradition and something invented because it was raining, people have been gathering to watch numbered garden snails cross damp cloth for decades.

Before Hackernews, before Twitter, before blogs, before the web had been spun, when the internet was just four universities in a trenchcoat, there was *BYTE*. A monthly mainline of the entire personal computing universe, delivered on dead trees for a generation of hackers. Running from September 1975 to July 1998, its 277 issues chronicled the Cambrian explosion of the microcomputer, from bare-metal kits to the dawn of the commercial internet. Forget repackaged corporate press releases—*BYTE* was for the builders. Inside, you'd find Steve Ciarcia teaching you to build a speech synthesizer from scratch, the inner details of a RISC pipeline, deep dives into the guts of Smalltalk, and Jerry Pournelle’s legendary columns from Chaos Manor. This wasn't just about what a computer could do, but *how* it did it. The source code of a revolution that continues to this day.
What?

This zoomable map shows every page of every issue of BYTE starting from the front cover of the first issue (top left) to the last page of the final edition (bottom right). The search bar runs RE2 regex over the full text of all 100k pages. The archive itself is not new, scans of BYTE have long existed on the Internet Archive and elsewhere on the net – but I hope seeing everything in single, searchable place offers a unique perspective.

It is hard to represent our spherical world on a flat piece of paper. Cartographers use something called a "projection" to morph the globe into a 2D map. The most popular of these is the Mercator projection.

Every map projection introduces distortion, and each has its own set of problems. One of the most common criticisms of the Mercator map is that it exaggerates the size of countries nearer the poles (US, Russia, Europe), while downplaying the size of those near the equator (the African Continent). On the Mercator projection, Greenland appears to be roughly the same size as Africa. In reality, Greenland is 2.16 million km² and Africa is 30.37 million km²—nearly 14 and a half times larger.

This app was created by James Talmage and Damon Maneice. It was inspired by an episode of The West Wing and an infographic by Kai Krause entitled "The True Size of Africa". We hope teachers will use it to show their students just how big the world actually is.

The geographical area and population data for this application are primarily sourced from Natural Earth and Wikidata.

The one-stroke-per-day rule slows the painting down and keeps one person from taking over. It makes every choice matter: position, colour, and timing.

In the years since HTML 2.0’s 1995 debut, the web has changed massively. However, there is a saying in the web standards world: ‘Don’t Break The Web’. There are some exceptions, but on the whole a website developed at the web’s inception should work in a modern browser, regardless of how much time has passed. To keep this compatibility, however, risks making changes impossible for fret of breaking existing sites.

One way the web combats this is with certain elements that are expected in HTML documents. If the element is present, then it uses the new functionality. If not, it simply falls back to the old functionality. Pair that with what different integrations and systems across the web expect, and it means that there is rather a lot of ‘boilerplate’ – code that is repeated across almost every new or maintained site. HTML boilerplate commonly both opts in to modern functionality and also sets site preferences and details. Assorted things such as how the site should embed on social media, what styles should be loaded, how the browser should theme surrounding the site, and other such details.

Much like I maintain my own CSS reset, which provides me a clean slate for my styles, I maintain my own boilerplate, which I use as a base structure and reference when creating HTML documents. Much like my CSS reset, it is very opinionated.

The best RSS app that works in your favorite RSS app already...

I love the open web, and because RSS came to prominence in the pre-web 2.0 era, a lot of the basics are effectively open standards. This means that a lot of RSS apps allow you to connect any service that uses a couple standards. Google Reader and Fresh RSS are the big ones, and some apps allow you to do it through Fever (god, Fever was cool back in the day…feed a fever!).

As such, I've built Birchfeed in a way that it complies with all three of those standards. So if the RSS app you use today supports generic connections on those standards, you can use Birchfeed in those apps right now. Not theoretically, literally now. I personally have been using Reader Classic the entire time I've been developing this app as my client on my devices, and it works completely flawlessly. I switched from my previous sync service provider to Birchfeed and genuinely forgot about the change when I was checking my feeds.

I have not tested every app. However, I have confirmed that it works well with Reader Classic, NetNewsWire, and Unread. There are plenty of other RSS apps out there, and I would expect most of them to work fine, but your mileage may vary.

A Google Maps Timeline export is useful data, but a JSON file is not a story you can watch or share. Timeline Visualizer turns the places and movements in that export into an animated map. You choose the part of your history that matters, preview how the route moves, and create an MP4 in square, portrait, or landscape format. The work happens in the browser tab, so you do not need an account or a server-side upload.

This page is both the tool and the guide. You can begin with the upload area above, try the fictional sample without exposing personal data, and then use the explanations below when you need help exporting the right file or choosing video settings. The visualizer is designed for travel recaps, yearly route summaries, relocation stories, road trips, and any moment where a moving route explains more than a static screenshot.

Every photographer gets one upload per day. No galleries, no portfolios — just your best frame. This keeps the grid competitive and the quality high.

Two feeds, one grid. Top ranks by total likes and favorites — the frame the community loves most holds the corner. Rising applies a gravity formula that weights engagement against age, so a fresh upload generating excitement can always challenge an older frame. The best work finds its level naturally.

Once a photo's momentum slows it retires from the main grid, making room for new work. It lives on in the photographer's profile forever. Nothing is deleted — just graduated.

How Widely Do Hashtags Federate?

When you follow an account on the Fediverse, that account's server informs your server every time it posts, so you see every post the account permits you to view.

Mastodon (and some other Fediverse software) allows you to follow hashtags as well, but this works very differently. Because the network is decentralized, your server does not see every post in the network. It knows about posts (a) by accounts that someone on your server follows directly; (b) that were boosted by or quoted by accounts that someone local follows; or (c) were fetched to give a complete view of a thread or remote account. When you follow a hashtag, you are only shown posts that your server has learned about via these mechanisms.

This means that you typically do not see all posts using hashtags: the larger your server, the more of them you probably see; on smaller servers, you may not see many at all. It's all down to who you follow, and who other people on your server follow. This tool helps you understand how widely posts with hashtatgs get distributed.

We currently have around 6 million artworks indexed, and strive to eventually index all museum art in the world.

Given the ambition of this project, the large amount of data, and the very small team, you will have to forgive us for the many instances of innaccurate data. We are working on it, but our first priority is making all the art discoverable.

This website is completely free to use. We are not affiliated with any museums or galleries, and we do not own any of the images.

Most of the art we index is in the public domain. Those works are shown at preview resolution and may be downloaded freely.

Our goal is to make all of art history accessible to the public, so if you're a museum we would love to work with you. If you want your collection to be featured with your own attribution or licensing requirements, or via an API you provide, send us a message.

By combining these two datasets, we can estimate how many babies with a specific name born in year X are still alive in 2025. Then, we can use those numbers to find a weighted average age for that name. (One big flaw this doesn’t account for immigration, but I haven’t found a way around that)

Oldest names in the U.S.
Using this method, the oldest name on average is… drumroll please… Myrtle!

The average Myrtle is estimated to be 84 years old in 2025, and more than two thirds of Myrtles are 80 or older.

You can also find the distribution for your own name.

I am sure you will find something that works by googling or trying different combinations. But do you really understand why the code you picked works? Is it the right one for your use case? Because it really does depend and require consideration!

The genesis of this tutorial is that I wanted my 11 year old son Isaac to understand how modern AI works.

I looked at existing tutorials, but all the ones I could find were either too hand-wavey, required a level of existing expertise he didn't have, or just weren't sufficiently "fun" for him to want to complete them. Maybe something better existed, but I didn't find it. So I decided to create my own.

My goal is that this tutorial should be accessible to anyone with a middle-school level understanding of math, and yet give the reader a deep intuitive sense of not just how AI works, but why it works the way it does.

The net.art generator automatically produces net.art on demand.

nag_05-this version of the net.art generator creates images. The resulting image emerges as a collage of a number of images which have been collected on the WWW in relation to the 'title' you have chosen. The original material is processed in 12-14 randomly chosen and combined steps. For finding the images, nag_05 draws on Google search; that is the delicate part as Google limits access to their search results for all non-paying clients including net.art projects like this one.

The technical base of the net.art generator is a PERL script, old but reliable technology. The original version was programmed by Panos Galanis from IAP GmbH, Hamburg, in 2003 after an idea by net.artist Cornelia Sollfrank. With Winnie Soon, the net.art generator has found a skillful new master of creative coding in 2017.
