A certain idea of Ed Miliband - New Statesman

His advisers have taken to calling this “British Gaullism”....

He wanted to resolve inequality and tackle the climate crisis. The transition from fossil fuels to zero-carbon energy requires enormous investments. These should bring jobs – engineers, technicians, factory workers – to ailing post-industrial areas such as Anglesey. Those jobs bring prosperity and renew a sense of security in those benighted communities. The new clean energy projects are at least partly publicly owned, so in some sense those communities have a stake in them: the transition becomes a patriotic mission, reorienting the nation towards a collective goal. Clean, homegrown power brings down bills for good. Britain leaves what Miliband calls “the fossil fuel rollercoaster” and is once again in control of its own energy supply....

“He wasn’t allowed to be the truest version of himself when he was leader,” one of his former advisers told me. And what was that “true” Miliband? “He is just really, really left wing.”...

First died instantly, killed by the South African police, leaving behind her husband Joe Slovo and their three daughters. Among the obituaries was one in the Socialist Register, written by Ralph Miliband, then one of the leading Marxist thinkers in the English-speaking world...

Miliband was once sent on an official visit to Russia in October 2009. As part of the trip he did a call-in segment on the Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy. An elderly woman called up. Her name was Sofia Davidovna Miliband. She identified herself as a long-lost relative, explaining that her grandfather was the brother of Ed’s great-great-grandfather, both of whom were from the Jewish quarter of Warsaw.

In the case of DNA collection research, evidence gathered by Doleac and other scholars shows that the deterrent effect on future offending is extremely large. In Denmark, for example, collecting the DNA of people charged with felonies reduced their future rate of criminal conviction by 42 percent. This is one of many studies that allows Doleac to underscore a critical point: The most powerful deterrent is not the severity of the punishment but the certainty of being punished. Once criminals know that it will be hard to get away with crimes because their DNA is on file, many desist. And importantly, as Doleac notes, crime deterrence isn’t just good for future victims; it also increases the likelihood that the one-time criminal will do more productive things, such as obtaining a job or receiving an education.

The blaze occurred in the early hours of the morning and no-one was injured. This fire was subsequently ruled to have started accidentally, with subsequent fires on the site being treated as arson.[4]

On 1 May 2012, a small hut at the top of the main slope containing controls for the ski lifts was destroyed in a second fire in the early hours of the morning.[5]

On 21 May 2012, the former snowflex nursery slope was partially destroyed in a third fire, again started deliberately.[6]

On 24 April 2013, the remaining wooden outbuildings of the former Adventure Mountain outdoor playground were set on fire, destroying the only remaining infrastructure on the site.[7]

By August 2016 the site had suffered from approximately 50 arson attacks.[8]

On 11 April 2017, a further arson attack at the site occurred after two fires were started.[9]

On 22 September 2017, a fire broke out in the old pump house in an incident thought to be an accident caused by another bonfire nearby.[10]

On 14 October 2017, a fire broke out at the site and the fire brigade were called, who found some fly tipped items and some of the material used to make the old ski slopes alight.

On 6 June 2018, the site was again reported to be on fire.[11]

On 20 July 2022, the site was again reported to be on fire.[12]

Custom/DIY implementations account for 12% of all primary picks (252 out of 2,073), making it the single most common “recommendation.”

A default stack exists. Where agents pick third-party tools, they converge on: Vercel, PostgreSQL, Stripe, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, pnpm, GitHub Actions, Sentry, Resend, Zustand, plus stack-specific picks like Drizzle (JS) or SQLModel (Python) for ORMs, NextAuth.js (Next.js) for auth, and Vitest (JS) or pytest (Python) for testing.

Some categories are locked up. GitHub Actions owns CI/CD (94%), shadcn/ui owns UI Components (90%), Stripe owns Payments (91%).

Models agree 90% of the time within each ecosystem. All three models pick the same top tool in 18 of 20 categories when compared within-ecosystem

I therefore predict that the eventual future of AI hardware is just standard CPUs, fully and flexibly programmable as any standard CPU is, driving very large systolic arrays. Here “standard CPU” still includes high memory bandwidth, fast network, high vector compute etc.

// point about the difference between narrower "attention cores" and wider "decode cores" reminds me a lot of Dynamo etc
// also what he's planning here - CPU cores + matmuls + SRAM with everything DMAd via copper traces on click-together boards - is roughly a transputer isn't it?

I suspect that this is the real explanation of the huge expensive HBMs on recent Google TPUs and Nvidia GPUs. I suspect it’s an effort to make things easier for less sophisticated customers (internal or external), even though it isn’t completely necessary...

got the sense that this was something that someone somewhere decided to have happen, but not really something the company overall cared for, so it was made to happen, but not well. The result was that the way you start and run a TPU in Cloud was different from how you do it with a GPU, so even though XLA itself made it often possible to switch between GPU and TPU by simply changing one line that says “GPU” to instead say “TPU”, it was a somewhat more involved story for a customer to make that happen in Google Cloud, requiring more changes at a technical level. An unforced error that is hard to explain. That’s not what you would have done if you wanted to sell TPUs in Cloud in earnest. Meanwhile, it is obvious today that Google was sitting on a trillion dollar gold mine (and may still be),...

Tesla’s now-discontinued Dojo training chip was optimized for link latency. E.g. they mention a link latency of 1 cycle. For comparison, TPUv3 link latencies could be in the 100s of cycles, which is pretty high, yet that didn’t come up as a big problem, so it was OK. So the Dojo focus on low link latency has puzzled me. Looking at page 25 of these slides might explain some of it. That slide shows a very wide 2D mesh, leading to having to traverse a great many links to communicate between far-part nodes. If they also did not aggressively software pipeline, and used small transfers, which seems possible given the low amount of SRAM on each chip (software pipelining increases SRAM requirements and so does large transfers), then that would explain the focus on link latency.

Three years after AWS launched commercially, it had a $58 million revenue run rate. Three years into this AI wave, AWS’s AI revenue run rate is over $15 billion in Q1 2026 (nearly 260 times larger than AWS at that same point)...

As an aside, two large AWS customers have already asked if they could buy *all* of our Graviton instance capacity in 2026 (Graviton is our widely-adopted custom CPU chip)—we can’t agree to these requests given other customers’ needs, but it gives you an idea of the demand...

Our second version of our custom AI silicon (Trainium2) had about 30% better price-performance than comparable GPUs, and has largely sold out. Trainium3, which just started shipping at the start of 2026 and is 30-40% more price-performant than Trainium2, is nearly fully-subscribed. A significant chunk of Trainium4, which is still about 18 months from broad availability, has already been reserved. And, Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s primary (and very fast-growing) inference service, runs most of its inference on Trainium...

If our chips business was a stand-alone business, and sold chips produced this year to AWS and other third parties (as other leading chips companies do), our annual run rate would be ~$50 billion. There’s so much demand for our chips that it’s quite possible we’ll sell racks of them to third parties in the future.

AWS has to lay out cash for land, power, buildings, chips, servers, and networking gear in advance of when we can monetize it (typically 6-24 months before we start billing customers, depending on the component). However, these capex investments fund assets with many-year useful lives (30+ years for datacenters; 5-6 years for chips, servers, and networking gear)

According to Bloomberg, IT Home, and Wall Street CN, the models are designed for different use cases but share a common characteristic — they are not fully open to developers....

Meta is also moving toward a more selective openness strategy. According to Axios, the company is preparing a new generation of AI models that will include both open-source and proprietary versions.

The models, reportedly led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, include a text model codenamed "Avocado" and a multimodal system called "Mango," expected to launch in the first half of 2026. Open-source variants will be derived from these systems, though with certain limitations.

rising-tide automation has a flatter success–duration relationship, with AI performance being more similar across tasks of different lengths. This would still be represented by a logistic curve, but a much flatter one. The same amount of AI progress would then translate into more gradual automation under the rising-tide view, such that individual workers are less likely to be blindsided by AI. A rising tide could, however, still be quite disruptive if it happens quickly.

The success-duration curve is relatively flat — consistent with a rising tide of AI automation

The estimated slope coefficients span a wide range, implying that the relationship between LLM performance and task duration is not portable across labor-market domains. In roughly a quarter of job families, the slope is statistically significantly negative, with estimates between −0.25 and −0.93—equivalent to a 6.1 to 22.8 percentage-point decline in predicted success for a tenfold increase in task duration, evaluated at a 60% baseline success rate. In the remaining job families, the slope is statistically indistinguishable from zero...

For frontier models, compute has already scaled by several orders of magnitude ([13]), and there are good reasons why continued investment in scaling may become prohibitively high ([20], [3]). In addition, algorithmic progress may be showing signs of slowing ([8]), while physical limits may impose increasingly binding constraints on further hardware advances...

Analysts estimate that SK Hynix's US$8 billion order represents approximately 30 additional EUV systems over the next two years. WMCM is regarded as an upgraded version of the existing InFO-PoP solution, further integrating chip-on-wafer (CoW) and redistribution layer (RDL) technologies. Mass production is expected to begin in the second half of the year, with the adoption of the A20 chips for the iPhone 18.

TSMC's WMCM capacity is expected to be concentrated at its Longtan AP3 facility, while a dedicated production line for Apple will also be established at the Chiayi AP7 site. Monthly capacity is projected to reach 60,000 wafers by the end of the year and double to over 120,000 wafers by 2027....

ASE's Fan-Out Chip-on-Substrate (FOCoS) platform has already been adopted by clients, including AMD and Broadcom. Volume production is scheduled to begin in the second half of the year at its Kaohsiung facility....Related revenue in 2026 is projected to triple compared to 2025, contributing to over 20% year-on-year growth in its computing segment....

Powertech has long focused on FOPLP solutions, particularly its proprietary 510×515mm panel size. Reports indicate that a US-based cloud service provider (CSP) has already reserved capacity. Following certification by the end of 2026, large-scale production is expected to ramp up in 2027, with monthly capacity reaching up to 6,000 panels.

Chief financial officer David Zinsner has said the business could generate well over US$1 billion in revenue, potentially ahead of wafer fabrication income, with multi-billion-dollar deals nearing completion.

Rather than relying on large silicon interposers, EMIB uses localized interconnect bridges, enabling a more modular and "surgical" integration method. This can improve power efficiency, reduce footprint, and lower costs, while giving customers greater flexibility in how they structure production.

That flexibility is a key differentiator. As Katie Prouty, the Intel New Mexico plant manager and site leader, noted, customers can "enter and exit" the manufacturing flow at different stages, combining wafers from other suppliers with Intel's packaging services.

Like predators stalking a wounded animal, manned alternatives to AARS emerged. One proposal would put a sophisticated target acquisition system on the B-2 stealth bomber – the so-called RB-2 configuration. The proposal had value as a terminal tracking system, but the RB-2 lacked a method of off-board cueing to direct it to a search area...

AARS/Quartz was never intended to exist in a vacuum. It was explicitly seen as a part of an ecosystem that also included the B-2 bomber (to strike the targets the drone found) and the Milstar communications satellite constellation (to help transmit relevant data). The B-2 and Milstar did enter service, although the former did so on a very truncated level due to post-Cold War drawdowns

An economist, Burnham first took a series of adjunct positions in academia, and then worked for the US government, assisting in the post-WWII reconstruction of Europe. However, during the McCarthy Era, his Fabian socialist views caused him to be blacklisted, and to be unable to find a job either in academia or in the government. When he learned that he could not get cleared for loyalty, Burnham wrote a letter of protest that he sent to around a dozen newspapers, and that was printed in the Star News, the Nation, and the Saturday Review, complaining that "I was denied a position, not on the ground that there is a reasonable doubt as to my loyalty, but, literally, on the ground that there is a reasonable doubt as to whether there is a reasonable doubt as to my loyalty"

well yes, this is one of the many holes in MIT cost-exchange doctrine. something that can be released at Mach 5 and home on a target is very much like, well, something else that can home on a target at Mach 5, aka an interceptor. the main difference is the rocket motor and that's not the expensive bit.
