So, let’s not be distracted by Western media hype about anonymous “heartless human traffickers” abandoning “ghost ships” of refugees on the rocks of European coastlines. The real heartless human traffickers are the governments responsible for creating the flood of refugees from the Middle East and Africa in the first place. This is a crisis made in Washington, London and Paris."

How many Afghan civilians have died in 13 years of war?

the reason I'm disgusted at this page.

1. the writer compares the number of dead UK soldiers with that of dead afghan civilians. he wants to say that UK soldiers are as innocent as afghan civilians, and that the ones to blame are armed afghans, not UK soldiers, killers/occupiers/aggressors.

2. while showing images of all 453 UK soldiers, he doesn't show only a single image of afghans who were killed -- from being shot, bombed, tortured, starved, frozen, drug-addicted, traumatized, diseased, wounded, burned, displaced, widowed, orphaned, deformed by DU and toxic chemicals -- during the US/NATO's aggressive war on afghanistan, where afghans had built peace by themselves after the nearly-20-year war, the soviet aggression with subsequent civil war. though the peace wasn't perfect, it should have been a start line of building islamic peace and freedom for all afghans. but US/UK ruined it. if he does an internet search for a moment, he can easily find pictures of afghans who were killed. but he didn't do even such a little thing for afghans, except making a black space. why? because he knows that the british don't want see such images. they prove that UK soldiers committed genocide and that they killed humans, who were as ordinary as the british, and who were much poorer than them. if he shows images of both dead UK soldiers and afghans in the same page, every visitor of the page becomes aware the former are accomplices of genocide. above all, such images prove that UK soldiers killed so many muslim children.

3. while knowing the number of casualties of UK soldiers, we can't know that of afghans, which means that though the importance of life and dignity of the latter is similar to that of former, we've treated the latter enough inhumanely to be unable to take a head count of the dead, even in units of ten thousand people. but we don't make even an apology for it.

4. he wants to make the british believe that the end of the afghan war is coming. and so, he shows the seemingly-"final" count of deaths of UK soldiers and afghan civilians. but the afghan war is unended, though the british are bringing their attention to IS and the possibility that its violence might influence UK people. enjoying immunity due to BSA, US and other NATO soldiers in afghanistan can conduct "counter-terror operations", which are similar to US/NATO assaults as usual. it means that US/NATO keeps occupying afghanistan. afghans remain occupied and oppressed.

5. he omits the serious situation of now afghans. UK soldiers destroyed/contaminated lands of afghans, took away their livelihoods. the 13-year war/occupation has been making them more poor/starved. US/UK has spread countless, an enormous number of arms for 13 years. in order to ensure its imperialistic interests without hurting UK soldiers, the UK have been providing training and weapons to afghans, which promotes civil war and devastation, even though the vast majority of afghans sincerely want peace. money brought by US/NATO and japan has been exacerbating economic disparity, bribes, and corruption. they're obstacles to build peace. western capitalistic system, culture and values, which US/UK imposed on afghans, ignoring their will, to enable them to exploit afghans, have been clashing with afghan culture/tradition, and destabilizing society. GM foods/seeds, which EU forbids in its own lands, have spread in afghanistan. the climate change has been causing suffering. for few decades, devastating droughts/floods have been hitting them, and been adversely affecting crop production by the poor/starved people.

6. he omits a duty of the british: to make compensation for and apology to afghans, and to change UK's imperialistic policy on afghanistan for humanitarian one --withdrawal of all foreign soldiers from afghanistan, stop of providing arms and other military aid, and supporting afghans to eliminate hunger and to promote education and health service. the afghan war is unended.

> they are the specters of...
some US intellectuals love to dehumanize/demonize muslims. the black-clad fighters are neither "specters" nor "ghosts" nor "risen remains " but humans. have you ever regarded a westerner as such things? the west dehumanized/demonize taliban to justify the US/NATO aggressive war on afghanistan. and now, you demonize black-clad fighters.

> The language of violence engenders violence...
the language of dehumanization/demonization engenders dehumanization/demonization.

> “Those to whom evil is done do evil in return."...
while the US has committed genocide against muslims in iraq/afghanistan and other muslim countries many times since 9.11 occurred, afghans/iraqis have never done evil to americans in the US. taliban never say, "we'll do payback in the US," but say, "get out of our beloved homeland, every foreign soldier!" can you notice a difference in meaning between the two sentences? even if your people "to whom evil is done always do evil in return", others don't always do so. (it doesn't mean either that they choose to endure pain silently or that americans don't have to do anything.)

> In the 1990s there was a considerable effort made in the military, but also in the larger community...
some US intellectuals like to have a delusion about "the US in the good, old days." the sanction on iraq from 1990 had brought great suffering and deaths to iraqis. what had the US done in yugoslavia in the 90s? how many military bases had the US had abroad in the 90s?

> There is an analogy to be made with Great Britain..
what concerns you is only the US, which has something in common with the downfallen UK. you keep silent on the fact that the UK inflicted endless suffering on the people of the middle-east, in other words, not only the US aggressive war on and occupation of iraq but also borders which the UK and other western countries had drawn in the middle east in the age of the WWI have been bringing oppression, displacement and ethnic/sectarian conflicts to them till now.

> And in these two wars [Afghanistan and Iraq] there does seem to be this increase in PTSD..
I guess that you don't consider iraqi/afghan sufferers from PTSD, who have been forced by the US to live in battlefields, and to witness US murders of their families, and to be bereaved/orphaned, and to live in extreme poverty without accessing medical service.

> The callous slaughter we deliver is no different from the callous slaughter we receive...
do you want US readers to equate suffering of US public with that of iraqis/afghans? does the US have a city like fallujah/kandahar, where the US slaughtered countless local people, destroyed their houses, hospitals, and schools, and contaminated their lands with DU and other bombs, and where many civilians including children have suffered PTSD/disabilities, and where iraqi/afghan state soldiers armed with US-made weapons have massacred local people? (I don't deny that the people of the US and a US colony, japan are out of control on the road to ruin.)

> Our jihadists..are no less demented than the jihadists approaching Baghdad..
you demonize muslims again. these "jihadists", unlike the US politicians whose names you call out, have no intention to wage aggressive war on the west, though in accordance with the islam teachings, they defy borders that the west draw in muslim lands and cross them. you seem to want to regard as demon, people who remake order which the west made and which you regard as right. though you label these muslims as "jihadists", they don't share the same thinking. I believe that some of them, by the teachings of islam, have been struggling to bring peace to muslims, and to control violence, and to minimize harm to them. I want to encourage such people. (you should find out the meaning of jihad. some mulsims may be offended by calling bush, etc, jihadists.)

'I'll put one in his head, if you want' - court releases audio of Afghan insurgent 'shot dead' by Royal Marine By Heather Saul – 07 November 2013

from the page: "The audio of the moment an injured Afghan insurgent was shot by a Royal Marine sergeant has been released.. The unknown man had been badly injured in a helicopter attack... The video has not been released as the court believes it could prompt revenge attacks against British soldiers or civilians... Marine A said that he "genuinely believed" the insurgent was dead when he shot him and that he was "ashamed and embarrassed" of his actions."

--though the british accuse a few UK marines as war criminal, they never accuse their country of committing both illegal, immoral aggression against afghanistan and countless raids which have brought deaths, traumas or serious injuries to most members within countless afghan families. their country is an aggressor against this murdered man's country. he was a person who escaped death that their country had attempted to bring him with "a helicopter attack", but whose death was brought by their country with "a 9mm pistol" of their marine. for the murdered man and maybe most afghans, there's no difference between death by "helicopter attack" and that by "pistol shoot" which violated the geneva conventions.

the court believes the video release "could prompt revenge attacks". in other words, it believes that afghans' sufferings caused by UK aggression, occupation and massacre, which don't violate the convention, are so trivial that afghans shouldn't have raged at the UK, and that the UK needn't stop its military operation nor expiate its guilt.

most of the british, just like this marine who has a sense of shame only at his violation of the convention, aren't "ashamed and embarrassed" of UK aggression, occupation and massacre --which is the very prime mover of war. international laws and geneva convention is tools to give the west "legitimacy" to prevent westerners from feeling ashamed for slaughtering and oppressing the non-westerners, and to bring them comfort from honoring the laws and convention.

your purpose of mobilizing working class to prevent a military assault on syria is to improve their living standard and rights? you don't mention that even if a US military intervention is prevented, the civil war in syria will continue and the sufferings of syrians who have been oppressed by the dictatorships for decades will continue. if only it is prevented, your concern about syria might vanish. russia and china have supported the sirian dictatorship with weapons and money, while the US, UK and france have supported its opposition with the same things. (the UK authorized the export of poisonous materials of chemical weapons to the sirian government. it's common that western former colonial powers support both sides of a civil war with weapons, because for them, wars are just "money trees". in rwanda, they did it twenty years ago.)

one says that the US, UK and france have rattled their saber to expand their empires, and so, russia and china have done the same thing to protect their own interests. but in reality, all these countries have intimidated the world (by nuclear weapons), triggered and inflamed wars, and done more harm to "world security" than good. by supporting dictatorships and puppets, they've bought energy and mineral resources for a steal and sold weapons to kill the oppressed. as a consequence, their people, especially americans, british and french have enjoyed the high living standards. the earth is covered with blood of the countless people who have been murdered and wounded by weapons made by the citizens of the permanent members of the UN security council. the earth is covered with wars supported by their selfishness. the only person they care about are always themselves. is there any difference between them and the ruling class, whose greatest concerns are only their own interests?

because you seldom point a finger at my country, despite the fact that most japanese have been out of touch with their country's responsibility as a member (US's cash dispenser without security code) of military occupation of afghanistan, I surmise that you emphatically condemn japan for "finding jobs for afghan women". I pass a comment on it, but because I don't know either islam or afghan society well, I might make you feel insulted.

(1) what you want to prevent is not women's social advancement but dismantlement of afghan families, communities and cultures, which may be triggered off by "western-style liberation" of women, isn't it? but regardless of sex, such "liberation" have spread in afghanistan. if you want to prevent the dismantlement, the roles to hold a family together and to make relationships among families, tribes, and communities should be played not only women but also men. it's not an issue of role sharing but men's lack of consideration for women. another problem is that the western definition of "liberty" is different from that of islam and that westerners force theirs on afghans and that many afghans, especially young men and women, have re-examined their definitions of it.

(2) the status and rights of women are dramatically worsened by long-lasting poverty and social devastation caused by wars, which is common among human societies in the world. in afghanistan, additionally, some people justify their stripping women of their dignities, by twisting islamic teachings or due to their ignorance about them. non-muslims unjustly regard them as standard afghans and blame afghan culture and islam. afghans need peaceful environment to appropriately learn and to improve women's situations, but what the west brings them is always war. while blaming afghans and trumpeting their few success cases of supporting afghan women, it keep silent on its heavy responsibilities for the devastation in afghanistan.

(3) though western ideas of human-rights have many good points that we should introduce, I don't swallow what they say whole. japan is criticized by the west as less-developed country of women advancement in society. though japan is a discriminatory society, it's discriminatory to view it only through the western lens, and their criticisms often contain their self-righteousness, stereotypes, double standards, and lack of information gathering. they, who rise up for their own people, don't prevent their own soldiers from destroying non-western countries, nor stop consuming goods made in sweating shops in non-western countries, both of which are discriminatory. and neoliberalism, "limitless liberty", which is based on western ideology, and which the west has compelled the non-west to swallow, and which has led humans to believe that maximizing short-term individual profit at the sacrifice of others is just, has discriminatory allowed the 1% to dehumanize the 99 % all over the world.

(4) I never think that those countries intend to sincerely support "finding jobs for afghan women". first, their "protection of women's rights" is usually a cover of their inhumanities. second, they, including japan, have pursued a policy of worsening their own employment issues to enable capitalists to easily squeeze humans, and the number of the people suffering from unemployment and short-term poorly-paid employment has been materially increasing in those countries. and so, it's impossible that they intend to solve employment issues of afghanistan. third, because the aim of military occupation is exploitation of afghanistan, they intend to install neoliberal system in afghanistan. supporting "finding jobs for afghan women" must mean that they use afghan women as parts of this system, which is not either a solution of gender discrimination or empowerment of women, but reinforcement of discrimination, because the ideal of neoliberalism is a world where the law of the jungle prevails. fourth, one of big reasons why they show hostility to muslims is that one of the strongest shields against neoliberalism is a muslims' thought that they attach importance to families and communities beyond nations. if people think a great deal of welfare of family and community, they don't give top priority to maximizing their own individual profits and national interests. and so, they want to dismantle afghan families and communities, by pretending to support "liberation of afghan women", and by leading afghans to believe that afghan culture is inferior to western one. but if you compel women to play a particular role, your shield will be less flexible and reduced in strength. I hope that afghan women, men and children will put heads together about the consequences of western-style "limitless liberty", and of dismantlement of families and communities, and about what society they want to build, and about what role they want to assume as a member of family and society.

(5) though japan is an education-minded, reading nation, for decades I had believed the US is superior to japan at all points, due to its education system and media under the influence of the US. when the deterioration of its society, which has been caused not only by its traditional way of thinking and system but by blind acceptance of western value and system, produced mental anguish at me, I realized my ignorance and my thirst for knowledge and information shattered my belief. people like me who realized some truth are seeking to create communities and bonds for a better future, which is less than successful, because many our families and communities have been dismantled for decades. I hope afghans will learn from our negative examples. I don't support all afghan culture and islam, but many of them will help afghans to create a better future, and help non-muslims to think from various perspectives, to improve their views of life, world, and history, and to enrich their cultures.

Their "mess" [left by George Bush and Tony Blair in Iraq] is a crime of epic proportions, wrote Von Sponeck, referring to the Iraqi ministry of social affairs' estimate of 4.5 million children who have lost one or both parents. This explains much of the existing hideous crime including murder, kidnapping, property destruction and, most noteworthy, the deteriorating relationships between Baghdad and the three northern Kurdish governorates. Since the years of war, sanctions and occupation, Iraq’s once state-of-the-art medical system has all but collapsed. Malnutrition and diseases, almost forgotten in Iraq, such as respiratory infections; measles; typhoid fever and tuberculosis have re-emerged on a large scale. The planned destruction of water and sanitation facilities , especially in the 1991 war, and recurrent drug shortages, throughout the period of sanctions and after the 2003 invasion, promoted significantly ill-being, morbidity and mortality in the country (WHO)...

However, the native people did not back down. A striking example of this resistance was the setting up of roadblocks by the Atikamekw Nation to deny access to companies seeking to exploit forest resources on their land... Native demands are not limited to improving material conditions and obtaining certain rights. They also focus on the dismantling of the structures of oppressive relations. For their part, non-native populations..must come to accept that they are not the "owners" of the land. A lasting solution requires that these realities be the starting point for a genuine dialogue between equally sovereign peoples. It is clear that establishing such a dialogue between equals is not an easy task. when french reflect on what they have been committing in africa? what shameless france is doing in mali is similar to what the US has done in iraq and afghanistan.

from the page: "... Britain has spent hundreds of millions of pounds in the province over the last six years building and restoring services decimated by conflict and the years of Taliban rule. But the Guardian has been told that a confidential report compiled this year warned that some of the buildings in Helmand were constructed without enough consultation with the Afghan government and without thinking through how they would be maintained. Senior British officials in Helmand are working with Afghan ministers to identify the schools and clinics that are deemed "critical" and should remain open, while most of the rest could be phased out between now and the end of 2014. The report made clear the British "had built too much" in the province, and that this was a consequence of the UK military trying to win "hearts and minds" among the populace.

Al Jazeera gained access to one such facility, Jumhoriat Hospital, built by Chinese contractors. But it is so badly built that it is too dangerous to open to the public... About 19 new donor-funded hospitals are expected to be operational in the next two years.. to maintain these hospitals to international standards - Afghanistan needs $2bn over the next 10 years - money the Afghan government just does not have. The health ministry is pinning its hopes on public-private partnerships. Essentially, it will subsidise private health companies to run the hospitals.. The biggest donors are the US, Japan, Germany and the UK. Shortly before the massacre of miners employed for a pittance in a dangerous, British-registered platinum mine, the erosion of South Africa's economic independence was demonstrated when the ANC government of Jacob Zuma stopped importing 42 per cent of its oil from Iran under intense pressure from Washington. The price of petrol has already risen sharply, further impoverishing people... Whatever the truth of their claim that this was the purpose of last Friday's attack on Camp Bastion - where Harry is stationed as a helicopter pilot - the Taliban's offensive that killed two US Marines, and injured nine more, was highly significant. Camp Bastion is regarded as safe territory. It is in the middle of flat desert and is the destination of choice for visiting politicians who want their pictures taken when visiting the troops. Presumably that's why Prince Harry is there. Yet the Taliban made a serious breach in its defences... as yet little reported - the Taliban attack also destroyed six US Harrier jets, severely damaged two more, destroyed three refueling stations and damaged aircraft hangars. 'Our resources in the south - including aircraft - are already stretched,' a US Marine officer said."

The incidents included 74 on ballistic missile submarines. Three happened while the vessels were in naval bases; one of these was on a ballistic missile submarine. SNP defence spokesman Angus Robertson said the "apparent vulnerability" to fire raised "grave questions"... Of the 266 fires, 243 were classed as "small-scale" and categorised as a localised fire, such as a minor electrical fault creating smoke. There were 20 medium-scale fires that were generally categorised as a localised fire, such as a failure of mechanical equipment creating smoke and flame, requiring the use of "significant onboard resources".

Many Aboriginal people were forcibly removed from their homelands and taken to places such as the Yalata mission in South Australia, which was effectively a prison camp. It will be the first such joint development since Japan eased its principles on its weapons export ban in December last year to open the way for the joint development and production of weapons and technology with countries with which Tokyo has security arrangements. Until then, Japan had jointly developed a missile defense (MD) system with the United States as an exception to the ban... The previous year was 1,768, making an increase of 23 percent... Anyone sheltering in a hostel or space “used for recreational purposes” is excluded from the count... The number of young people registered as homeless has risen sharply... A study by the Sunday Mirror found that 13,000 young people presented themselves at local authorities as homeless and were seeking advice in October 2011... Ongoing deep cuts to the welfare benefits system and the rising costs of living are tearing families apart... “Homelessness: A silent killer”, found that homeless men are dying at an average age of 47 years old and women at 43 years. The average age of death in the general UK population stands at 77 years. The incidence of death because of infections and falls is increased and suicide is nine times more likely in someone who is homeless."

How many critical pieces in the Guardian portrayed the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq accurately as wars of aggression, as judged by the standards of the post-WW2 Nuremberg trials? .. In fact, 'traffic on the Guardian's website doubled in the months after 9/11, driven from the US.' I remember a wiry, fiercely intelligent woman who masked her grief with a determination that was a presence. She was the embodiment of people's resistance to the war on democracy... In the early 1960s, the Labour government of Harold Wilson secretly agreed to a demand from Washington that the Chagos archipelago [her homeland], a British colony, be "swept" and "sanitised" of its 2,500 inhabitants so that a military base could be built on the principal island, Diego Garcia... "Only when you take direct action, face to face, even break laws, are you ever noticed," said Lisette. "And the smaller you are, the greater your example to others."... I last saw Lisette's tiny figure standing in driving rain alongside her comrades outside the Houses of Parliament. What struck me was the enduring courage of their resistance. It is this refusal to give up that rotten power fears, above all, knowing it is the seed beneath the snow."

The number of prescriptions for antidepressants increased by 28% from 34m in 2007-08 to 43.4m in 2010-11.. Research by the House of Commons found the cost to the NHS of treating the illness is more than £520m a year. People who are unable to work due to depression lose £8.97bn of potential earnings a year, while the loss of earnings from suicide is put at £1.47bn... Paul Farmer, chief executive of the mental health charity Mind, said the tough economic times may have contributed to more people experiencing depression, but improved public awareness may also mean more people are seeking help... Emer O'Neill, chief executive of Depression Alliance, said: "These uncertain economic times are linked to an increase in the number of people with the illness.""

He could not explain why he carried out the attack. After being traced by the Guardian, the boy's father said the attack had left his impoverished family bitter and financially burdened. More than 18 months after the attack, his son is still unable to go to school... he cannot understand why his son was attacked and has received no apology from the British forces. Although he credits Nato troops for expelling the Taliban from his village, the attack has soured his opinion of western forces. "Of course foreigners are the enemies of Afghans – otherwise he wouldn't do that to innocent child who was just going by on his bike... We asked for $40,000 but they only gave us $800." Six members of the British armed forces have been, or are being, prosecuted over allegations of abusing or wounding Afghan civilians since March last year.

from the page: "..The new report on land acquisitions in seven African countries suggests that Harvard, Vanderbilt and many other US colleges with large endowment funds have invested heavily in African land... Much of the money is said to be channelled through London-based Emergent asset management, which runs one of Africa's largest land acquisition funds, run by former JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs currency dealers... "We have seen cases of speculators taking over agricultural land while small farmers, viewed as squatters, are forcibly removed with no compensation," said Frederic Mousseau, policy director at Oakland, said: "This is creating insecurity in the global food system that could be a much bigger threat to global security than terrorism. More than one billion people around the world are living with hunger. The majority of the world's poor still depend on small farms for their livelihoods, and speculators are taking these away while promising progress that never happens."

It is the first time evidence has emerged that the British intelligence agencies ran their own rendition operation, as opposed to co-operating with those that were mounted by the CIA... Equality was not granted, to the extent it was, primarily in recognition of an unspeakable, deadly injustice that whites had committed... I myself think that violence is always deeply tragic. It is uncontrollable and, among other lamentable consequences, it will always lead to the death and severe injury of innocent people. It very frequently leads to results which are worse than the conditions which gave rise to it (watch for that to happen in both England and the United States). Violence as a response means that hope has been destroyed, that the victims of the system no longer believe (or can even pretend to believe) that "change from within" is worth a damn, or even possible in any meaningful way... Violence is a completely understandable response, particularly when every other means of amelioration and recourse has been systematically closed off.

The children were taken to Camp Bastion, the main British base in Helmand, for treatment, the Ministry of Defence said. The closure is a consequence of the Fukushima incident in Japan in March, which has closed down much of the nuclear industry there and led to a rethink of nuclear power around the world. But the government said the move had "no implications" for the UK's plans for new nuclear reactors. Workers at the plant were told on Wednesday morning that there was "considerable scope" for them to be re-employed in other parts of the Sellafield complex. It will take several months for the plant to close fully. The west Cumbrian mixed-oxide fuel plant has cost the taxpayer £1.4bn since it was commissioned in the early 1990s.
