Gabor Lenard:
When we went to Hungary during the Christmas period last year I bought a 1GB data plan on a prepaid card. However, soon after I went online with my laptop the entire data allowance was used up. Strangely, I wasn$B!G(Bt able to add another data package. Instead, T-Mobile limited my internet access to 32kbps till the end of the month.
Since there was no easy way to fix it and I had nothing critical to do I decided to embrace the situation as an opportunity to understand how it feels to be on a slow network most of the time. I had already started reading the book Responsible Responsive Design at that time anyway so I was curious.
I learned a lot from this first-hand experience. [$B!D(B] Here$B!G(Bs the three most important things that I became aware of during this time as a web developer.

It is possible to send an SMS command to your Mac using an AppleScript. I've made one which takes a picture when I send the command /photo to iMessages on my Mac.
The script is very simple; it must be set up Messages' Alerts preferences. Choose Event > Message Received, then check Run an Apple Script. This will check each message you get for the command; in this case, /photo.
The script will turn the volume all the way down (and up again) before taking a picture with PhotoBooth so it does not make any noise.
Then you can make a symbolic link from the PhotoBooth folder to your Dropbox so you can check the photos from your mobile device.
Here's the script:

Easy retina-ready images using SCSS

via Byline
If you?fre interested in adding retina image support to your website or app and you happen to be using SCSS, here?fs a handy shortcut that makes it dead simple.
Just include this SCSS mixin in any rule and specify the high resolution image?fs path and device independent pixel dimensions. Here?fs an example:
div.logo {
  background: url("logo.png") no-repeat;
  @include image-2x("logo2x.png", 100px, 25px);
}
Putting the high resolution alternative in the same rule as the normal image instead of putting it in a separate @media query rule or in different stylesheet altogether is a big win in terms of clarity in our CSS. It?fs easier to read, easier to understand and easier to maintain.
The image-2x mixin detects high resolution displays like this:
@mixin image-2x($image, $width, $height) {
  @media (min--moz-device-pixel-ratio: 1.3),
         (-o-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2.6/2),
         (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.3),
         (min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.3),
         (min-resolution: 1.3dppx) {
    /* on retina, use image that's scaled by 2 */
    background-image: url($image);
    background-size: $width $height;
  }
}
The mixin not only makes development easier, but it centralizes the definition of high resolution displays so it can easily be changed globally as more devices come to market. The @media query is based on the one in Thomas Fuchs?f Retinafy book but, for example, we?fve already modified it to define the Google Nexus 7 with it?fs 1.3 pixel ratio as a retina-capable device.
A key insight here is that with SCSS, @media queries can be nested inside other rules. Such that these both work the same:
@media print {
  body {
    // print styles
  }
}
body {
  @media print {
    // print styles
  }
}
Purists of hand-crafted CSS may rail that this method results in the rule being repeated in the compiled CSS each time we use this mixin and that?fs true. Basecamp is light on images so we?fre talking about a handful of repetitions, not dozens or hundreds. It also seems likely that as SCSS continues to improve, these rules will be smartly combined. For now that trade-off is worth the improved clarity and convenience in our code.

Authored By: Diana Weynand
Released On: 10/3/2012
This course shows how to build a polished documentary using Apple Final Cut Pro X and a few essential editing techniques. Author Diana Weynand demonstrates documentary editing in a real-world project, breaking down the process into a series of manageable steps and milestones. After reviewing existing footage, explore how to build and define a narrative, assemble rough cuts, and create motion graphics. Then see how to adjust B-roll shots, incorporate color correction and audio mixing techniques, and export the final movie.
This course is part of a series that looks at documentary editing from the point of view of 3 different editors in 3 different editing applications. For more insight on editing documentary projects, take a look at Documentary Editing with Avid Media Composer and Documentary Editing with Premiere Pro.

Nested Replacements

via Byline
While updating the TextMate source to use ARC I needed to update the following code:
NSAutoreleasePool* pool = [NSAutoreleasePool new];
$B!D(B
[pool drain];
To use the new autorelease blocks:
@autoreleasepool {
    $B!D(B
}
Searching
We can find all the autorelease constructs using a regular expression like the following:
NSAutoreleasePool.*(?m)(.*?)\[pool \w+\];
I made the assumption here that our autorelease pool variable is always named pool. If that is not the case, one could use a back-reference.
As for the pattern: The (?m) syntax enables $B!H(Bmultiline matching$B!I(B, meaning that the $B!H(Bany$B!I(B operator (.) matches newlines. This isn$B!G(Bt enabled until the second use of ., so the first .* will only match the first line (excluding its newline).
The code between declaring the pool and draining/releasing it is matched by .*? wrapped in parentheses to capture it. As we are in multiline mode, we make it a non-greedy match by using the non-greedy modifier (?), i.e. using .*? instead of just .*.
Had we not made it non-greedy, and a file contained more than one use of an autorelease pool, we would have gotten just one match from that file, which would encompass all of the pools.
Replacing
A naive replacement string would be:
@autoreleasepool {$1}
If however you enter this after having done the find, you$B!G(Bll get a replacement preview and notice that this isn$B!G(Bt satisfying:
The problem is that the capture ($1) should be indented. Fortunately TextMate offers you its powerful format string syntax in the replacement field, which means we can perform further replacements on the capture. In particular we wish to increase the indent by one tab, which can be done using:
${1/^/\t/g}
What we do is match $B!H(Bbegin of line$B!I(B using ^ and then replacing that with a single tab (\t), specifying g as option to make it repeat (global). Looking at the preview though this isn$B!G(Bt entirely right either:
The problem is that the first and last lines are indented. What we really want is to only add a tab to lines which are non-empty. This can be done using the following replacement:
${1/^\t*(?=\S)/$0\t/g}
Here we match begin of line followed by zero or more tab characters and then not followed by whitespace. \S matches non-whitespace characters, where newline counts as whitespace, and wrapping it in (?=$B!D(B) makes it a $B!H(Blook-ahead assertion$B!I(B meaning that it is not part of the actual match, we just ensure the match is followed by this.
The entire replacement string now becomes:
@autoreleasepool {${1/^\t*(?=\S)/$0\t/g}}
Which gives us the desired replacement:
Addendum
The ability to process captures when doing search and replace is not limited to regular expression transformations, TextMate offers conditional insertions, case transformations, and even an asciify conversion.
You can find the full range of options in Help $B"*(B TextMate Help $B"*(B Format String Syntax.

This is an oldie but a goodie, especially when bug fix counts are in the hundreds. The ExpressionEngine Change Log is a marvelous place for seeing how ExpressionEngine has improved over the versions, but something it’s lacking is a link to the original bug report when one is fixed.
Bjørn Børresen addresses that with his Greasemonkey script that will link fixed bugs, to their original bug report. Sometimes those one liners in the change log addressing the fix doesn’t provide enough context. Linking to the original report is a handy addition.
This has been around for a while, but it’s still useful and until recently, I was unaware it existed.
