> On May 13, 2026, Sinch released "The AI Production Paradox," a global survey of 2,527 senior AI decision-makers across ten countries. The headline number: 74% of enterprises that deployed an AI customer communications agent in production have already rolled it back or shut it down. The rate climbs to 81% at organizations Sinch classifies as having "fully mature guardrails," a counterintuitive result that the report attributes to better monitoring rather than worse technology. Customer-service AI is now in a measurable rollback cycle: 62% of enterprises have live agents, and most are hitting systemic post-deployment failures that no amount of pilot-stage optimism warned them about. Investment is still climbing, the chatbots are still going out the door, and the rollback button is wearing through.

>We are in a moment of public reckoning about the governance of digital technologies and the future of civil society. Increasingly obvious are the failures of both highly centralized, closed, digital platforms and supposedly decentralized, “open” digital ecosystems. Billionaire Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter has redirected a glaring spotlight at the ethical limits of closed governance of digital, public spheres. At the same time, the collapse of FTX and the legal troubles its co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried face are just the latest fog horns announcing gross error ingrained in liberatory presumptions about digital decentralization.

> As tech users, we all are experiencing fallout from the reality that there is no simple answer to the question of how technology could be equitably governed. Predatory and extractive behavior dominate on corporately-owned platforms and in the distributed ecosystems of Web3. In both, none but the most elite, savvy, and resourced users are privy to the information necessary to make safe choices. Failures across both centralized and decentralized digital governance demand a paradigm shift in the ways alternative technologies are imagined and designed.

Just a few quotes out of an article *well* worth reading in whole:

- "Ben can’t access his shadow contact information, because that would violate Anna’s privacy, according to Facebook, so he can’t see it or delete it, and he can’t keep advertisers from using it either."
- "when a user gives Facebook a phone number for two-factor authentication or in order to receive alerts about new log-ins to a user’s account, that phone number became targetable by an advertiser"
- "advertisers can literally specify exactly which users should see their ads by uploading the users’ email addresses, phone numbers, names+dates of birth, etc"

This is insanity. Every single one of these would be *really bad*. Together they just reinforce what has become obvious for quite some time now: That Facebook's culture is rotten to the core, and the organization blatantly disregards privacy, data protection, trust, and consumer rights.

Also, if we don't radically overhaul online advertising we'll be so much better off without it, period.

Apple has been (seemingly?) pretty good about privacy. Most likely, I believe, because they're terrible at services and much better with hardware, so it's easier strategically. But it doesn't matter, they appear to be good for some aspects of privacy and data protection. I just wanted to get that out of the way, but the real money quote is this line, The Wall Street Journal quoting Tim Cook:

> He said he is generally averse to regulation, “however, I think we're beyond that.

*I think we're beyond that.* Just let that sink in for a second. I think he's absolutely right! But to hear it put like that, that's not too shabby.

Also, he goes on to refer to meaningful consent (not using the word itself):

> “Everyone should know what they’re giving up, not only the specific data point but the whole line people can draw: When I know this-plus-this-plus-this-plus-this, I can infer a whole bunch of different things,” Mr. Cook said. “That can be abused.”

Yes, the line people can draw by connecting and combining data sets. More accurately, the web of lines algorithms can presumably draw, now or in the near future—which is going to be dense.

And lastly, just because it made me laugh out loud, this:

> When asked what he would do if he were Facebook’s chief, Mr. Cook replied: “I wouldn’t be in this situation.”

*Zing*. Well done, sir.

In her newsletter, Stacey Higginbotham discusses AI at the edge (which is industry speak for on the device as opposed to in the cloud), where AI is currently predominantly happening. For example, Amazon & Google have traditionally been very cloud-focused: That's to be expected in internet companies. (It's even reflected in the thinking of Google's smart city unit, Sidewalk Labs, which designs cities to be built "from the internet up".) But there are strong arguments to be made to put AI closer to the edge:

Ai at the edge could have "tremendous impact on privacy and the speed of improvement in connected devices. If a machine can learn without sending data to the cloud, then that data could stay resident on the device itself, under user control."

Because what doesn't have to go to the cloud doesn't have to be under anyone else's control. And for many contexts that's a very good thing indeed. (I know some smart people at Google and presumably the other big tech companies are working on that, too; different schools of thought exist within each of these organizations.) I, for one, look forward to seeing more happen at the edge.

As the Irish Times phrase it (https://www.irishtimes.com/business/technology/facebook-twitter-criticised-over-failing-to-comply-with-consumer-rules-1.3393404), the European consumer rights groups are leaning in, too: "The European Consumer Organisation said the failure of Facebook and Twitter to fully comply with the requests, highlighted the need for the Commission to take action in its upcoming legislative package dedicated to updating consumer law. The organisation said the commission should ensure that all companies that do not respect EU law face “serious and deterrent sanctions,” including strong fines."

Google seems to be forthcoming, Facebook and Twitter aren't. (I'm a little biased; I like Google and Twitter better than Facebook, and I've worked with Google in the past. Why Twitter is mentioned at eye level among the two giants I can't understand though: They're so much smaller and less influential, no?)
