We report an exploratory red-teaming study of autonomous language-model-powered agents deployed in a live laboratory environment with persistent memory, email accounts, Discord access, file systems, and shell execution. Over a two-week period, twenty AI researchers interacted with the agents under benign and adversarial conditions. Focusing on failures emerging from the integration of language models with autonomy, tool use, and multi-party communication, we document eleven representative case studies. Observed behaviors include unauthorized compliance with non-owners, disclosure of sensitive information, execution of destructive system-level actions, denial-of-service conditions, uncontrolled resource consumption, identity spoofing vulnerabilities, cross-agent propagation of unsafe practices, and partial system takeover. In several cases, agents reported task completion while the underlying system state contradicted those reports. We also report on some of the failed attempts. Our findings establish the existence of security-, privacy-, and governance-relevant vulnerabilities in realistic deployment settings. These behaviors raise unresolved questions regarding accountability, delegated authority, and responsibility for downstream harms, and warrant urgent attention from legal scholars, policymakers, and researchers across disciplines. This report serves as an initial empirical contribution to that broader conversation.

For advanced features that need to reason over complex data with larger foundation models, we created Private Cloud Compute (PCC), a groundbreaking cloud intelligence system designed specifically for private AI processing. For the first time ever, Private Cloud Compute extends the industry-leading security and privacy of Apple devices into the cloud, making sure that personal user data sent to PCC isn’t accessible to anyone other than the user — not even to Apple. Built with custom Apple silicon and a hardened operating system designed for privacy, we believe PCC is the most advanced security architecture ever deployed for cloud AI compute at scale.

Worries about deep fakes — machine-manipulated videos of celebrities and world leaders purportedly saying or doing things that they really didn’t — are quaint compared to a new threat: doctored images of the Earth itself.

China is the acknowledged leader in using an emerging technique called generative adversarial networks to trick computers into seeing objects in landscapes or in satellite images that aren’t there, says Todd Myers, automation lead and Chief Information Officer in the Office of the Director of Technology at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

“The Chinese are well ahead of us. This is not classified info,” Myers said Thursday at the second annual Genius Machines summit, hosted by Defense One and Nextgov. “The Chinese have already designed; they’re already doing it right now, using GANs—which are generative adversarial networks—to manipulate scenes and pixels to create things for nefarious reasons.”

For example, Myers said, an adversary might fool your computer-assisted imagery analysts into reporting that a bridge crosses an important river at a given point.

“So from a tactical perspective or mission planning, you train your forces to go a certain route, toward a bridge, but it’s not there. Then there’s a big surprise waiting for you,” he said.

> "Second, hacking even a tiny subset of the 10 billion and counting networked things can produce threats larger than any one consumer. Individually these devices may be too small to care about; together they become too big to fail. Security systems in a city could be made to sound an alarm simultaneously. Light bulbs can be organized into bot armies, directed to harm any other internet-connected target. And worse than a single Jeep executing an unexpected sharp left turn is a whole fleet of them doing so."

Aadhaar, India's centralized identity database is based on the premise that strong and fast identity verification helps deliver better basic services to all citizens—especially the poorest and most vulnerable—but has already be shown to be insecure. Not that it needed proof, it's an inherent weakness of highly centralized databases of valuable data. So we have a good idea here, but implemented with huge and dangerous flaws. So should we scale it up worldwide? Eben Moglen and Mishi Choudhary nail it:

> "Because the premise of Aadhaar is correct, the Indian government has an enormous political stake in ignoring the flaws and shutting down public conversation. Globalising Aadhaar’s ambition is a worthy goal for the world’s social welfare policy makers, including the World Bank and Gates Foundation. Imitating a system that has barely reached version 1.0 and is already showing serious architectural flaws would be serious policy malpractice."

Hoxton Analytics, a London-based physical-space-analytics startup, has a really smart approach to physical world analytics while preserving privacy:

"Hoxton takes a different approach. They have cameras right down low on the floor, and they use machine learning - on the device - to recognise shoes.

It's crazy accurate. 95% accurate. It can also count group sizes, and whether people are going in or out. So it can do capacity.

It also doesn't store personally identifiable information so it's good in Europe.

But get this. Because they've built this solution, it means they can also use it in public places. So you can point the camera out of the window and see how many people are walking past, versus how many people are walking in. This is the holy grail, like a conversion funnel, like Google Analytics, but for physical retail. And they've got there by considering privacy not as a product constraint, but as a product feature."

An interesting plot twist at the end of the Mirai saga: Turns out the global IoT-enabled botnet that crashed lots of popular websites in late 2016 wasn't malicious organized crime hackers (per se) but a bunch of kids with a criminal bend and *let's say extremely questionable* grasp of unintended consequences. Still DDoS for hire, but for winning in online games. WIRED has the full story: "As the 2016 US presidential election drew near, fears began to mount that the so-called Mirai botnet might be the work of a nation-state practicing for an attack that would cripple the country as voters went to the polls. The truth, as made clear in that Alaskan courtroom Friday—and unsealed by the Justice Department on Wednesday—was even stranger: The brains behind Mirai were a 21-year-old Rutgers college student from suburban New Jersey and his two college-age friends from outside Pittsburgh and New Orleans. All three—Paras Jha, Josiah White, and Dalton Norman, respectively—admitted their role in creating and launching Mirai into the world.

Originally, prosecutors say, the defendants hadn’t intended to bring down the internet—they had been trying to gain an advantage in the computer game Minecraft."

In many cases enterprise respondents said there is real confusion about who is responsible for securing the internet of things. That may be because IoT is just a fancy way of describing devices connected to your network, and traditionally some of those devices were not part of IT's domain, but it's also a organizational question we should be talking about."

There's a new type of super-aggressive attack on IoT devices, and Ars Technica has the write-up for you: "Researchers have uncovered a rash of ongoing attacks designed to damage routers and other Internet-connected appliances so badly that they become effectively inoperable. PDoS attack bots (short for "permanent denial-of-service") scan the Internet for Linux-based routers, bridges, or similar Internet-connected devices that require only factory-default passwords to grant remote administrator access. Once the bots find a vulnerable target, they run a series of highly debilitating commands that wipe all the files stored on the device, corrupt the device's storage, and sever its Internet connection. Given the cost and time required to repair the damage, the device is effectively destroyed, or bricked, from the perspective of the typical consumer."
Now what makes this particularly interesting is that there's a chance, however small it may be, that this attack uses blunt tools to serve a greater good: "The common thread linking all the devices—whether targeted by BrickerBot.1 or BrickerBot.2—is that they are so poorly secured that they are easy prey for Mirai and other highly destructive botnets. That leaves open the possibility that the rash of PDoS attacks is being carried out by one or more vigilantes who want to take out these devices before they can be conscripted into a powerful DoS army that poses a serious threat to the Internet as we know it."

Android automotive software seems very hackable for now. This report paints a grim picture indeed:

"By using proprietary mobile apps, it is possible to get the GPS coordinates of a car, trace its route, open its doors, start its engine, and turn on its auxiliary devices." So far, so good. Alas, this option seems to be available to bad actors as well, at least in theory: "when thinking about the security of a connected car, its infrastructure safety (for control servers) and its interaction and infrastructure channels are not the only things worth considering. It’s also worth it to pay attention to the client side, particularly to the app that is installed on user devices. It is too easy to turn the app against the car owner nowadays, and currently the client side is quite possibly the most vulnerable spot that can be targeted by malefactors."

According to this report, CloudPets stored audio recordings of kids' messages in a database that was publicly accessible and hence indexed by Shodan. But companies who start out with bad security tend to be the ones who have bad security practices all over the place, so it gets better! "3 attempts to warn the organisation of a serious security vulnerability and not a single response. I've said many times before in many blog posts, public talks and workshops that one of the greatest difficulties I have in dealing with data breaches is getting a response from the organisation involved. Time and time again, there are extensive delays or no response at all from the very people that should be the most interested in incidents like this. "

A car has been remotely hacked under lab conditions and understandably there's an uproar about it. And this isn't some futuristic scenario, but applicable to cars as connected or unconnected as they're on the road today. This connectivity - and with it: vulnerability - will only continue to increase. How do we handle this? Who's responsible? What's the legal and regulatory angle? How about consumer trust? Lots of big questions - and not many answers that we can give today. We only know this is going to be interesting, and a long conversation to have around the internet of things. (For a better understanding, we recommend security researcher Bruce Schneier's piece on hacking connected cars: https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2015/07/remotely_hackin.html)
