For the folks behind Malden Court Community Orchard, it would have to include lots of food for humans to eat, a variety of plants for pollinators and a root system that cleans storm water run-off.

The orchard is rapidly taking shape this summer after its first work party, Saturday, June 13, that attracted about 50 people to the site, including Thorns player McCall Zerboni and Timbers player Jeanderson Salvador Pereira, through Hands On Greater Portland’s Stand Together Week.

Along the Springwater Corridor Trail, the 0.38-acre city property near the intersection of Southeast 87th Avenue and Southeast Flavel Street is in the low-income Lents neighborhood of Portland.

“There’s multiple convenience stores within walking distance, but no access to healthy food within walking distance in this particular neighborhood,” says Jalene Littlejohn, who heads Green Lents, a nonprofit spearheading the Malden Court Community Orchard project with a group of eight core volunteers.

Not an urban farm nor a community garden, it’s something the team envisions as more: a permaculture forest of edible plants, community education classes, and, most importantly, a welcoming space.

The food grown on the property will be free to anyone who will use it, not just those who plant it or work there.

If there were a competition for the demographic with the highest percentage of hypertension, diabetes or obesity, Blacks would lead the way as a statistical frontrunner.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Non-Hispanic Blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (47.8 percent) followed by Hispanics (42.5 percent), non-Hispanic Whites (32.6 percent), and non-Hispanic Asians (10.8 percent).

Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are known as comorbidities, or chronic diseases that occur simultaneously. These ailments are precursors for more serious conditions such as kidney failure, heart attack, aneurysm, stroke, vision loss, amputations, gallstones and breathing problems. Reading this list might cause you to think twice about health problems you or your family members might be familiar with. I know I am.

The leading causes of death amongst the Black American population are heart disease, cancer and stroke. Studies have shown a correlation between disparaging health and diets low in fresh fruits and vegetables. The Department of Agriculture estimates that 23.5 million people live in food deserts. Food deserts occur in low income places with low access to affordable, healthy food choices. Black people are more likely to live in such areas.

In addition to limited food options, Blacks (and Latinos) also receive a higher rate of junk food advertising on a day-to-day basis. In November 2014, The Washington Post reported about a team of researchers who found that kids in black neighborhoods were targeted with 60 percent more junk food ads than kids in White neighborhoods

Unlike Oprah and Madonna, who put their charity efforts in Africa, Lauper focused on America’s forgotten LGBT kids who often have to run away from home after being rejected for their sexuality. This new 30-bed housing facility for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered youth is a great start, and opened in Manhattan on September 1st.
The residence is described as an “energy-efficient building with 30 studio apartments for youths aged 18 to 24, complete with indoor and outdoor community space. Residents will pay rent based on their income and will receive help with job placement.”

Today, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales released his proposed budget for FY2013-14. We are pleased to report that funding for the arts, through the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), was spared any disproportionate cuts in the Mayor’s budget.

With the city facing a budget gap of $21.5 million, the mayor had already instructed all bureaus, agencies and other programs to cut their expenses by 10%. Some programs face even greater cuts, and some long-standing city services are being eliminated altogether. Further complicating matters, the city no longer has “one-time” revenues to invest– a funding mechanism that RACC has relied upon in the past to fund The Right Brain Initiative, Work for Art, and outreach to communities of color. RACC was instructed to wean itself off of these funds while maintaining current service levels if possible.

The City’s general fund makes up approximately one-half of RACC’s budget; the other half is comprised of percent-for-art revenues, other local governments, the Oregon Arts Commission, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, individual donations, and earned income.

An arbitrator sided with Vasquez, according to a conversation an Almanac reporter overheard between City Manager Alex McIntyre and former city manager Glen Rojas while sitting near the men at a table in the Menlo Hub restaurant. McIntyre and Rojas did not identify Vasquez by name, but the Almanac reporter was able to track down the arrest information using information from the conversation about the officer's gender and tenure with the police department.

Oregon has the fourth-worst high school graduation rate in the nation, according to the federal government's most accurate state-by-state report on the topic.

Just 68 percent of Oregon high school students in the class of 2011 earned a diploma in four years, according to data released Monday. Forty-two other states did better, and three were unable to report properly so their rates weren't tallied.

The report revealed that Oregon high schools generate far-above-average dropout rates for students of every racial and ethnic group, including the nation's third-worst rate for African Americans.

No state did as poorly as Oregon when it came to getting white students to earn high school diplomas: Just 70 percent in Oregon's class of 2011 earned a diploma in four years. That compared with far better rates in states such as Wisconsin (91 percent), New Jersey (90 percent) and Tennessee (89 percent).

Oregon's class of 2011 included slightly more than 48,000 students. Of those, roughly 33,300 earned diplomas in four years, 14,900 dropped out and 3,900 enrolled for a fifth year of high school. Those earning diplomas included 719 who earned special education diplomas but were not counted as graduates in the federal government tally.

Among the state's biggest 25 school districts, each with at least 500 students in the class of 2011, the worst on-time graduation rates were in Reynolds (48 percent), Redmond (49 percent), Springfield (62 percent), Centennial (62 percent) and Portland (63 percent).

The highest rates were in Lake Oswego (91 percent), West Linn-Wilsonville (89 percent), Tigard-Tualatin (82 percent), Albany (79 percent) and Hillsboro (78 percent). That is particularly notable for Hillsboro and Albany, where nearly half of high school students are low-income.

This is graphically, and very painfully confirmed, in the below chart from Gary Alexander, Secretary of Public Welfare, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (a state best known for its broke capital Harrisburg). As quantitied, and explained by Alexander, "the single mom is better off earning gross income of $29,000 with $57,327 in net income & benefits than to earn gross income of $69,000 with net income and benefits of $57,045."

Although “LGBT issues” are often lumped together, gender and sexual orientation are different. Gender identity refers to the psychological awareness or sense of where one fits on the man-woman spectrum. Regardless of chromosomes or anatomy, individuals may identify as male, female, transgender, or something else, such as gender nonconforming.
Sexual orientation refers to a combination of factors that may include the following: who one is sexually attracted to, who one has sex with, how one defines oneself in the world, and with which community one affiliates.
Some patients may engage in same-sex sexual behavior, but not identify as LGB. In fact, national studies indicate that a much higher proportion of individuals report same-sex attraction and/or same-sex behavior than report LGB sexual orientation.

LGB adults are more likely to be college graduates (43% vs. 34%) than heterosexual adults, yet more LGB adults have an annual household income less than $20,000 (17% vs. 12%), live in poverty (13% vs. 10%), and experience household food insecurity (18% vs. 12%) than heterosexual adults.
Mental health. Nearly twice as many LGB adults report frequent mental distress (14 or more days of poor mental health in the last 30 days) as heterosexual adults (17% vs. 9%).
Similarly, more than twice as many lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ) youth report feeling “sad or hopeless for 2 or more weeks” in the past 12 months as their heterosexual peers (42% vs. 18%). One in five LGBQ youth report a suicide attempt in the last 12 months, compared with one in 25 heterosexual youth (20% vs. 4%).
Injury and violence. More than 1 in 3 LGB adults report ever being sexually assaulted compared with 1 in 8 heterosexual adults (36% vs. 13%).
Three times more LGBQ youth report ever being physically forced to have sexual intercourse than their straight peers (16% vs. 5%). One in 4 LGBQ youth report ever having sexual contact with an adult, compared with one in 12 straight youth (25% vs. 8%).
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is also higher, with twice as many LGB adults reporting ever being hit, slapped, pushed, kicked, or physically hurt by an intimate partner in their lifetimes (29% vs. 14%), and twice as many LGBQ youth report being hit, slapped, pushed, kicked, or physically hurt by an intimate partner in the last 12 months (12% vs. 5%)

Florida's Department of Health is asking for intimate details of the sex lives of 4,100 young women, and offering $10 gift cards in return.

State officials said the unprecedented, $45,000 survey will help them understand women's need for and approach to family-planning services.

Hundreds of women in South Florida were among the survey recipients, their names pulled from the white pages by a private company, state officials said. They were asked to voluntarily tell the state how many men they'd had sex with in the past year, whether a man had ever poked holes in a condom to get them pregnant, and how they felt emotionally when they last had unprotected sex.

Participants will get a $10 CVS card for use on health-related items.

The 46-question survey, sent out in September and October, was aimed at women 18 to 24 years old, but the state surgeon general said this week that it accidentally went to at least one minor, who contacted the state. Researchers have canceled a planned second mailing of the survey in November, worried the mailing list included women younger than 18.

According to data from Pew Research Center and the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 96.6 million single Americans. Just 51 percent of the adult population is married, compared with 72 percent in 1960. And a recent Pew/Time Magazine survey found that 39 percent of people think marriage is becoming obsolete.

Our survey was by no means scientific, but it helps to know from whom these responses are coming. The average age of our survey participants was 46.2 years old. Women made up 82 percent of the respondents; men, 18 percent. About 35 percent said their annual income was under $50,000; 41 percent were making between $50,000 and $100,000; and 23 percent bring in more than $100,000 a year.

The Rise of Intermarriage | Pew Social & Demographic Trends

The increasing popularity of intermarriage. About 15% of all new marriages in the United States in 2010 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from one another, more than double the share in 1980 (6.7%). Among all newlyweds in 2010, 9% of whites, 17% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 28% of Asians married out. Looking at all married couples in 2010, regardless of when they married, the share of intermarriages reached an all-time high of 8.4%. In 1980, that share was just 3.2%.
Gender patterns in intermarriage vary widely. About 24% of all black male newlyweds in 2010 married outside their race, compared with just 9% of black female newlyweds. Among Asians, the gender pattern runs the other way. About 36% of Asian female newlyweds married outside their race in 2010, compared with just 17% of Asian male newlyweds. Intermarriage rates among white and Hispanic newlyweds do not vary by gender.
At first glance, recent newlyweds who “married out” and those who “married in” have similar characteristics. In 2008-2010, the median combined annual earnings of both groups are similar—$56,711 for newlyweds who married out versus $55,000 for those who married in. In about one-in-five marriages of each group, both the husband and wife are college graduates. Spouses in the two groups also marry at similar ages (with a two- to three-year age gap between husband and wife), and an equal share are marrying for the first time.
However, these overall similarities mask sharp differences that emerge when the analysis looks in more detail at pairings by race and ethnicity. Some of these differences appear to reflect the overall characteristics of different groups in society at large, and some may be a result of a selection process. For example, white/Asian newlyweds of 2008 through 2010 have significantly higher median combined annual earnings ($70,952) than do any other pairing, including both white/white ($60,000) and Asian/Asian ($62,000). When it comes to educational characteristics, more than half of white newlyweds who marry Asians have a college degree, compared with roughly a third of white newlyweds who married whites. Among Hispanics and blacks, newlyweds who married whites tend to have higher educational attainment than do those who married within their own racial or ethnic group.
Intermarriage and earnings. Couples formed between an Asian husband and a white wife topped the median earning list among all newlyweds in 2008-2010 ($71,800). During this period, white male newlyweds who married Asian, Hispanic or black spouses had higher combined earnings than did white male newlyweds who married a white spouse. As for white female newlyweds, those who married a Hispanic or black husband had somewhat lower combined earnings than those who “married in,” while those who married an Asian husband had significantly higher combined earnings.
Regional differences. Intermarriage in the United States tilts West. About one-in-five (22%) of all newlyweds in Western states married someone of a different race or ethnicity between 2008 and 2010, compared with 14% in the South, 13% in the Northeast and 11% in the Midwest. At the state level, more than four-in-ten (42%) newlyweds in Hawaii between 2008 and 2010 were intermarried; the other states with an intermarriage rate of 20% or more are all west of the Mississippi River. (For rates of intermarriage as well as intra-marriage in all 50 states, see Appendix 2.)
Is more intermarriage good for society? More than four-in-ten Americans (43%) say that more people of different races marrying each other has been a change for the better in our society, while 11% say it has been a change for the worse and 44% say it has made no difference. Minorities, younger adults, the college-educated, those who describe themselves as liberal and those who live in the Northeast or the West are more disposed than others to see intermarriage in a positive light.
Public’s acceptance of intermarriage. More than one-third of Americans (35%) say that a member of their immediate family or a close relative is currently married to someone of a different race. Also, nearly two-thirds of Americans (63%) say it “would be fine” with them if a member of their own family were to marry someone outside their own racial or ethnic group. In 1986, the public was divided about this. Nearly three-in-ten Americans (28%) said people of different races marrying each other was not acceptable for anyone, and an additional 37% said this may be acceptable for others, but not for themselves. Only one-third of the public (33%) viewed intermarriage as acceptable for everyone.
Divorce. Several studies using government data have found that overall divorce rates are higher for couples who married out than for those who married in – but here, too, the patterns vary by the racial and gender characteristics of the couples. These findings are based on scholarly analysis of government data on marriage and divorce collected over the past two decades.

In Britain these Americans all seemed simply “rich,” with no qualifying adjectives. In an interview last year on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” Mr. Fellowes estimated that 350 free-spirited heiresses made transcontinental marriages from 1880 to 1920. Hermione Lee, in her biography of Wharton, put the number who married into the British peerage at about 100, “several of them connected to Wharton.”

There are vestiges of these heiresses all over New York.

One of the most famous of the gilded girls was Jennie Jerome of Brooklyn, who became the mother of Winston Churchill. Her father, Leonard Jerome, a financier and avid horse-racing fan, took Jennie and her sisters, Clarita and Leonie, abroad, where Jennie soon crossed paths with Lord Randolph Spencer-Churchill. They were engaged three days later, which caused some raised eyebrows, as did Winston’s birth about seven months after the marriage. Clarita married Moreton Frewen, son of Thomas Frewen, M.P., and Leonie married Sir John Leslie, an Irish baronet.

Many studies have found a link between how well men do economically and their height. A recent German study, for example, found that for each additional standard deviation in height (an increase of about 7 cm) West German men are paid a 4% wage premium. So for example, a man who is less than 165 cm (5’5”) tall is, on average, paid 562€ less per month than a man who is between 185 and 195 cm (6’1” to 6’5”). Other studies that look at data from countries throughout the developed world have found very similar results – taller men do better on average in the labor market.

There are several reasons why this relationship exists beyond simple workplace discrimination, not the least of which being that adult height is related to socio-economic status in childhood. But it isn’t just income that is causing short men to fair worse on the marriage market; even when we control for income women prefer taller men.
