"It’s not enough to say: 'But I believe in God, God is the only God.' That’s fine, but how do you live this out in your life’s journey? Because we can say, 'The Lord is the only God, there is no other', but then live as if He was not the only God and have other deities at our disposal ..."

This has been the question that I have struggled with all my adult life. I believe in god, so what does that imply for how I will act in my life?

Trusting Science
There's a big problem and I'm not sure what to do about it. Currently approximately half the people in the country believe that there is no consensus amongst climate scientists as to if climate changes is caused by humans. Unfortunately over 97% of climate scientists and the papers they publish agree that climate change is caused by humans. Irregardless of it being true, there is clearly a consensus amongst these scientists. So why doesn't half the country know this? I'm not entirely sure, certainly the media is partly to blame with their strategy of encouraging controversy to increase ratings.
The other big influence is groups that will lose out economically if our society enacts changes to deal with climate change, these groups have been spreading false information implying that there *is* some kind of controversy amongst the scientists. But the real question is why do people believe it?
Shouldn't more than half the country be able to see through the media's distortion and the opposition groups' misinformation? The only answer that comes to my mind is the sad state of education in our country isn't preparing people to make decisions for themselves.
So how do we better educate our country?

So they're trying to make a law that says these service providers have to put holes in their security so the FBI get in. The HUGE problem with this that then hackers with malicious intent can find those same holes (they've actually done this in the past) and break in to our e-mail and messages. Plus, if you want to talk about bad things, its easy to setup encryption that even the best government hackers couldn't ever get into, so this bill would really only let the FBI watch people who aren't the bad guys.

Well wonder of wonders, a bi-partisan group of representatives are actually proposing legislation that does just this, and makes sense! I'm very excited about the possibility of this happening (even though it might very well not go anywhere)...I even sat down and wrote a letter to my rep. There was one specific quote I wanted to share, the pope wants to change those who have "a hypercritical spirit that leads some Catholic priests and faithful to expend most of their energy censuring others inside and outside the Church rather than seeking to live and share the joy of the Christian faith". I couldn't agree more, we need to stop judging the problems of others and focus on loving (one of the biggest joys of the faith) those around us

What they're really saying is "we've never had any serious competition, so we've been doing the bare minimum (scewing over the paying customers) for the last ten years to maximize our profits". Being a corporation, there isn't anything wrong with that, they are obligated to take advantage of the situation to make as much money as possible. The failure here is the government which made an environment that is so hostile towards normal competition.

Now however, I think its safe to say that social justice will be an important part of our next years as a church. In his first major address to the media (and hence the world), he described picking the name Francis because of Francis's commitment to poverty and saying: "This is what I want, a poor church for the poor."

Like it or not we now have Obamacare is pretty much here, changing how insurance works but we still haven't done anything about the actual cost of healthcare. Each year we pay 35% more than other developed countries for healthcare, if we could bring our costs down, that would save $750 Billion a year.

My opinion of the order of things we should fix:
1. Prescription drug prices (less marketing and lobbying, cheaper drugs, save $20 Billion)
2. Rein in non-profit hospital profits (income tax on hospitals)
3. Tort reform (doctors trying to do the right thing shouldn't get mal-practice suits)
4. Make effectivity vs. cost research results available to doctors and patients (curb unnecessary testing and medication)
5. Change billing practices so that everyone medicare vs. insured vs. uninsured pay the same.
6. Mandatory co-pays for all insurance and medicare (reduce un-necessary visits)

GRC | ShieldsUP! — Internet Vulnerability Profiling

Ok everybody this is serious. Over the last week a new, very serious, vulnerability has been discovered in the routers people have in their homes (linksys, belkin, dlink, etc). This is easily the most serious security issues on the internet in the last 10 years, and affects 81 million homes and businesses. The good news is that there is usually something you can do about it.

To check if you have the problem, from your home computer (needs to be behind your router, don't bother with this at work), go to this website:
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
(I know this link looks shady but it is legitimate)

From there click the proceeded button, then on the scan page click the big, yellow image that says "GRC's Instant UPnP Exposure Test".

If you see the words "THE EQUIPMENT AT THE TARGET IP ADDRESS
DID NOT RESPOND TO OUR UPnP PROBES!" then you are safe!

If you get some other warning message, then you are at risk from this flaw. The safest course of action is to login to your router and disable UPnP (this isn't a bad idea anyway, but if you use Xbox, you will have to manually configure some things), then try the test again. If you still don't succeed, you will need to purchase a new router.

For the more technically inclined flaw affects UPnP, and is a vendor mis-configuration that has it open to the WAN instead of just the LAN.

If you have any questions about this, post in the comments, or send me a message or e-mail and I'd be happy to help you figure this out.

Its important!

This implies that the AT&Ts and Verizons of the world aren't getting fairly reimbursed for the services they provide. Yahoo Finance, on the other hand, shows that these services have profit margins north of 20%! It must be nice to be a monopoly and not have to worry about competition...just get the government to tell the public you aren't getting fairly compensated, then raise rates.

So it looks like the cost of the storm may be in the $50 billion range. We'll always have storms, but if we didn't have all this global warming, they wouldn't be as frequent or this strong. Irene was a good example of the strength of storm to hit this part of the country over the last couple centuries, and only cost ~$15B. Maybe we should have invested some more money in preventing climate change so we could be paying less to cleanup the effects.

Here's another way to look at it, if we took that $35B difference and bought solar arrays with it, we would have enough to replace ~20% of the U.S. electricity usage that comes from coal. (Here's a matlab/octave file with the math: http://pastebin.com/BapzeLie).

Obviously its too late to prevent Sandy, but how many more storms are we going to face like this...or like this year's drought? If we change now, its relatively cheap...the longer we wait, the more it will cost.

This is happening because the cost of electricity is coming down due to wind (yay), gas (boo), and coal (ahhh the horror) becoming more cheaply available. Its sad to see clean energy like nuclear not working out, but it has always simply been too expensive. The real problem is the coal and gas subsidies (and lack of total cost of usage prices), if these were priced appropriately the existing nuclear plant probably wouldn't be closing, though I doubt it would still make sense to build more. If you want some good news, look at a graph of cost/watt of solar power over the last 30yrs.

Blaming the organizations for the failure of SOPA isn't even getting to the meat of the issue. It was important that organizations helped people get together and express their views, but it was the millions and millions of people that should be the important piece of the puzzle, not one company vs. another. Eric Raymond wrote a good letter to Senator Dodd (now the chair of the movie producer's organization) explaining how this bill would have hurt the internet and all the people who use it. These are things that shouldn't be messed with for *any* industry's bottom line. #IPSharkWeek

The people who had pushed the SOPA bill were dismayed at the huge outpouring of support against their cause and decided to cast the blame against groups like Wikipedia (they've got a huge commercial motive, NOT!) and some companies like Google who had spoken against it. I'm sure that Google doesn't make any sizable percentage of its money from this type of content either way. #IPSharkWeek

Not content with their current power over content, the big content industries pushed congress to create a (series of) new law(s) that would let them together with the feds shut down websites that they don't like, even overseas. Part of this was called SOPA, and the internet wasn't having it. On the day of January 18, 2012 tens of thousands of people called the capitol switchboard, overloading it. There was so much traffic to congresses web-servers that they went down for a while. Over six million people signed petitions against SOPA (that's a decent percentage of the 300 million citizens in the U.S.). The amount of people who contacted their representatives this one day is more than ten times higher than any other day in history. And it worked. The next day the bill was dead. #IPSharkWeek

In 2001 a smart guy named Bram Cohen developed a new internet protocol for rapidly downloading large files. It is called bit-torrent and it allows everyone who is downloading the file to pool their bandwidth so that they can all download it faster. Amazing technology. The music and movie people quickly started to oppose this technology, because it was so good that it worked well for copying movies and music too...they have (and still are) tried to demonize this technology, even though it was originally designed and is widely used for non-infringing purposes. Here's one example of a site over 1,000,000 different *legal* files available for download with bit-torrent. #IPSharkWeek
