In a larger historical frame, the post-Stonewall heyday of radical politicking exemplified by the Gay Liberation Front looks more like an anomalous blip.

people’s expectations were still rooted in a post-war culture of equality. Not necessarily equality of income, although there was that. But equality in lifestyle and consumption expectations; the idea that someone earning a 50th percentile income shouldn’t live a life dramatically different than someone in the 80th or 90th percentile. And that someone in the 99th percentile lived a better life, but still a life that someone in the 50th percentile could comprehend. That’s how America worked for most of the 1945-1980 period. It doesn’t matter whether you think that’s morally right or wrong. It just matters that it happened.

Expectations always move slower than facts. And the economic facts of the years between the early 1970s through the early 2000s were that growth continued, but became more uneven, yet people’s expectations of how their lifestyle should compare to their peers did not change.

He zeroed in on Dick Grayson’s tiny green short-shorts, his nubile young body, his peppy personality. “Dick Grayson and his relationship with Batman is a homosexual fantasy,” Wertham all but tells us, “Don’t think about Dick Grayson as a homosexual fantasy.” Okay. Maybe those weren’t his exact words, but the effect was the same. Suddenly, people who would have never in a million years considered Batman and Robin as homosexual icons had the thought planted into the very forefront of their mind. It colored everything—every interaction fans had with Robin as a character were suddenly called into question. Was Robin gay? Had we all been duped? How could we not have realized this earlier?”

Currently on screen, Alan Turing invents the computer all by himself, John du Pont is a closeted gay sexual predator, Stephen Hawking is a lovable clown and Lyndon Johnson is a bitter enemy of Martin Luther King. All these movies use historical persons to make dramatic points. There’s no such thing as an “accurate biographical drama.” It just doesn’t exist. Braveheart rewrote Scottish history, Cleopatra rewrote Egyptian history and 1776 completely sidesteps Thomas Jefferson’s affair with his slave mistress. So what? This is indicative of the bad faith underlying the whole enterprise, which is desperate to put Turing in the role of a gay liberation totem but can’t bring itself to show him kissing another man—something he did frequently, and with gusto. And it most definitely doesn’t show him cruising New York’s gay bars, or popping off on a saucy vacation to one of the less reputable of the Greek islands. The Imitation Game is a film that prefers its gay men decorously disembodied.”
