I wrote a blog post on simulating Snakes and Ladders with #rstats . Because of idiosyncratic rules like "3 sixes and you're back to square one" it's not a simple Markov chain. I simulate some games and calculate the probabilities of winning from all different game positions, useful for your next high stakes gambling game of Snakes and Ladders. https://freerangestats.info/blog/2024/08/10/snakes-and-ladders

Roughly 93.5% of the research in the six-year period applied a model that pathologizes autism– focusing on “treating” autism as an illness– while many of the papers perpetuated gender and age biases as well as power imbalances. “It is rooted in the dehumanization, infantilization and masculinization of autistic people and pervasive even in contemporary research studies that continue to echo ableist ideologies from the past.” Guided by the medical model, a common goal for robotics researchers is to introduce technologies to help autistic people cease less-desirable behaviors and conform to neurotypical social norms. In their paper, the team proposes a series of ethical questions to help HRI researchers avoid common harmful stereotypes of autism and historical misrepresentations.

And then there’s how some of Tenet ’s most critical disclosures of spy-game storytelling, temporal lore, and character detail––i.e., just what the fuck is going on––Nolan drowns in the thick sonic loops and pressured ambiance of Göransson’s score, leaving vital dialogue infamously and contentiously inaudible. All of Nolan’s movies walk as noirs, the Protagonist operating less as a pure riff on James Bond than as a time-traveling fusion of Philip Marlowe, George Smiley, and Solid Snake, heroes who struggle to understand their shifting worlds of hoodlum schemes or post-modernized spycraft. Every pro forma choice, the idiosyncratic mixing of sound, the oppressively brutalist architecture, a color palette of pale blues, browns, grays, and yellows, compositions that emphasize a feeling of mazes made infinite, all only deepen the shadows. When Nolan was asked why he repeatedly indulges in a motif of dead wives, his answer stung with its sincerity: he puts “relatable fears” into his work, implying he can’t imagine anything worse than losing Emma Thomas, his co-producing partner and wife.

This is a webcomic about computer hardware from 1980 to 2034, where each decade users gain more CPU processing power and RAM but still primarily use a terminal to get most of their work done instead of GUI.

1980: 5 Mhz CPU/ 1 MB RAM - User is amazed by the command line's simplicity.
2001: 200 Mhz CPU / 24 MB - User finds the terminal more efficient than GUIs.
2017: 3.2 Ghz CPU / 8 GB RAM - User expresses love for the command line.
2034: 150 Ghz GPU / 1 TB RAM - User dismisses GUIs as being for beginners, even with vastly increased computing power. (image)

I was actually in Sri Lanka back in 2018 when I started this Snakes and Ladders work, so had a particular interest in its origins, but I don’t have time to explain that now. I want a realistic simulation of the game as actually played, so after mucking around with Markov chains for a while realised that it was going to be much simpler to write code that mimics how the players go about it. It’s a bit more complicated than the mean 39.2 dice throws that can be analytically calculated as the average number of rolls needed under the simplified version modelled with a Markov chain. The distribution of the number of rolls required is very much squewed with a long tail - it is in fact possible for a game to go on forever (although extremely improbable):

I'd like to hear otherwise if there are any patent attorneys listening who have experience with this scenario....By design it's very easy to forget when using a tool like#ChatGPT that you are gifting your ideas to a(n American) corporation that could, if it chose, lock the ideas down and keep them out of the public domain, potentially even preventing you yourself from discussing them publicly. You are correct in all probability but it depends on the terms of the public facing llm. Most firms have a strict policy that any confidential information should not be put on a prompt. JD Vance, R-Ohio, has become the poster child for the Democrats’ new favorite word — “weird” — as his stiff demeanor and atrocious policy beliefs have been placed center stage. More recently, he and his wife, Usha Vance, gave interviews talking about his time playing “Magic: The Gathering,” a card game that draws heavily on fantasy tropes. It is to Vance’s discredit that he will likely be unable to see how deeply his rejection of all things “woke” isolates him from a community that has come to embrace the “good weird” that doesn’t fit into his homogenized vision of America. It’s true that back when Vance would have been playing, as depicted briefly in the movie adaptation of his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” the game was not exactly popular among young women. Vance shares that obliviousness with his benefactor, billionaire Peter Thiel, who made his fortune as an early investor in PayPal.

He estimated the material losses add up to around $50,000 for him and his family. However, when he finally got a hold of his insurance company, it offered him a flat rate of $15,000.

"Nobody wants to do anything anymore. They're not sending any adjusters, they're just saying 'X' number of dollars because you're in a flood zone — something that we did not even know," he said.

The Mac is an expensive tool. On average, Mac costs more than iPad or iPhone. I dislike the idea that computing freedom belongs only to those who can afford it. That seems classist to me.

Gruber says, “Computers are such an essential part of the modern world — and almost everyone’s daily lives — that computers-that-work-like-computers aren’t for everyone.” I agree they’re essential, which is exactly why computers-that-work-like-computers ARE for everyone. Otherwise, it’s haves and have-nots.

Example. The S&P average ended the week exactly where it started. But here’s the headline that led the paper when I woke up this morning. “Tailspin”? Nothing in the story justifies it. Everyone seems pretty sanguine about the market.

Despite all the modern guardrails and mechanics like bonds and ideals that are supposed to add character death, D&D is ultimately a “some assholes go to die in a ditch” type of game. The problem is that D&D is so removed from its origins that it can’t be about random looters anymore, all the fluff in the books, all the advertising, all the published campaigns tend towards a group of heroes who live wacky adventures and eventually save the world, it’s what everyone wants anyway. It also cannot say “the new character is on the same level of the other members of the party” because (even if it’s the only sensible option) it would be admitting that the consequences, mechanically speaking, do not exist. The game grinds to a halt when the only mechanically expected consequence of your actions is reached and asks you to come up with something.

The formulaic nature of many tabletop systems lend themselves to an admittedly solid if bland plot structure. It is a moment of gonzo surrealism that harkens back to an earlier event, and maybe kinda implies that something might happen because of this later. Nothing is wrong with these things per se, these are some of the best parts of tabletop with friends, but they sure as hell should not be the load-baring pillar your story is built on. there are so many great responses about what problems people run into in the terminal environment

I think my favourite so far is how reading and writing to a file at the same file (like `grep blah file.txt > file.txt`) will just erase the file's contents (from https://cathode.church/@julia/112926974158575037)

such a great example a problem that I'd guess most people only learn about by being burned by it

(apparently you can fix this with sponge https://joeyh.name/code/moreutils/ but I just use a different file then move it)

Having identified just under 800 acres, or about 323 hectares, in the middle of Wilmot that includes six farms and six residential properties, the region told the landowners their options are to sell or have their land expropriated — and soon. “To address this situation, the region is considering the acquisition of strategic land parcels to ensure its ability to accommodate the full range of new job growth and business investment to 2051. The book recently garnered headlines due to Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s foreword, in which he lauds the stature and influence of Heritage and suggests that his agenda can act as an “essential weapon” in the “fights that lay ahead.” Because technological change made having a child seem like an optional and not natural result of having sex and destroyed a whole series of institutions and cultural norms that had protected women and forced men to take responsibility for their actions. Aging, barren societies literally become consumptive, taking on higher levels of debt and depleting savings as they pay foreign workers to keep things going. The Project 2025 policy book, titled Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, recommends a potential Trump-Vance administration to reproductive rights from several angles, including by removing the term “abortion” from all federal laws and regulations, reversing abortion pill approval, punishing providers by withdrawing federal health funding, and restricting clinics that provide contraception and STD testing.

If, for example, a scholar of international relations agrees with George W. Bush and the majority of Republicans that the United States is “chosen by God and commissioned by history to be a model to the world”, that should not be problem for a selection committee on Teles’ account. Aspiring doctors face a choice between specialisations with high economic returns (such as dermatology) and others which may yield more personal satisfaction or contribute more to public good (pediatrics). A cynical interpretation is that, if Republican legislators want more conservative professors, they should pay them higher salaries, pushing them into the top tax brackets populated by corporate lawyers and orthopaedic surgeons.

One of my most formative TV experiences as a kid was Force Five, the American broadcast TV production of five mecha anime series including Getter Robo G, Danguard Ace and UFO Robot Grendizer.

I was primed to see more of Leiji Matsumoto's work after seeing Star Blazers, the American syndication of Space Battleship Yamato. And I was already in love with mecha after watching Battle for the Planets, the Americanized Gatchaman.

It seems that even those who are not interested in sports and do not follow the Olympic Games have already read about the "50-year-old Turkish man who showed up at the competition in a wrinkled T-shirt, without special equipment, and took the Olympic silver without even taking his hand out of his pocket."

"Surely, Turkey sent some kind of hitman to Paris!" social media marvels.

In the blink of an eye, Yusuf Dikec, a previously unknown figure outside professional circles, a retired gendarmerie officer and professional shooter, became a global internet meme and sensation.

Everything is great! The moral of this story could be: no matter how old you are, keep doing what you love, and your best achievements may still lie ahead, even if you are an athlete over 50!

But another nuance caught my attention.

The fact is, Yusuf Dikec did not win the Olympic silver alone. It was a team event. Shooting alongside him was his colleague Sevval Ilayda Tarhan. In the same T-shirt, in the same pose, and also with minimal equipment.

The only difference is that he is 51, and she is 24. He began professional shooting around the time she was born.

Dikec is an excellent shooter with a plethora of medals from prestigious competitions, but he had never made it to the Olympic podium until his young partner grew up and competed with him on the same team.

Reasons I hate git tonight.

- If you delete a file, then realize you didn't want to do this , you can bring it back with `git checkout -- filepath`. But if you accidentally delete a directory, and you want to bring it back, this won't work. You have to say `git reset -- dirpath && git checkout -- dirpath`. No one will tell you this. StackOverflow, on this subject, just lies.

- Want to create a git archive and exclude certain files from it? THIS IS GONNA BE THE HARDEST THING IN THE FUCKIN WORLD

Speaking to the Gazette before the Cup presentation, Altman likened the initial uproar at schools over ChatGPT to the ones that arose after the arrival of calculators and, later, search engines like Google. Altman, who left Stanford at 19 to start Loopt, a location-sharing social media app, said the reaction to calculators, for instance, was overblown. Altman helped launch OpenAI in 2015 and its wildly influential ChatGPT — which can write papers and generate computer programs, among other things — before being removed in 2023 and then reinstated four days later as the company’s CEO.

I am beginning to think the the primary attraction of the "residential magic school" genre is that the kids at that school don't have to study English, geography, or math.

They show up as prompts that precede anything you say to a chatbot by default, and we’ve seen them uncovered for AI tools like Microsoft Bing and DALL-E before. This sounds like Apple’s “Rewrite” feature, one of the Writing Tools that you can access by highlighting text and right-clicking (or, in iOS, long-pressing) on it. Files I browsed through refer to the model as “ajax,” which some Verge readers might recall as the rumored internal name for Apple’s LLM last year. Opening them should show you some code and — occasionally, at the bottom of some of them — the instructions passed to your machine’s local incarnation of Apple’s LLM.

The prompts for Apple Intelligence’s LLMs have been located in system file folders on MacOS. I find it fascinating that what were science fiction tropes from Asimov’s “I, Robot” series of books are now real.

Telling AI to perform tasks and not make stuff up is the new programming.

try 30 to 40 TAP cards.

add them directly to your iPhone in the Wallet app.

Many people over the age of 40, myself included, will remember the interoffice paper mail system, which was the basis of how offices around the world operated, from the level of secretaries to CEOs. The interoffice mail system had the following interlocked parts (as detailed in Table 1 below), which are the now-familiar components of email: Inbox, the Memo (“To:”, “From:”, “Date:”, “Subject:”, “Body:”, “Cc:”, “Bcc:”), Forwarding, Composing, Drafts, Edit, Reply, Delete, Priorities, Outbox, Folders, Archive, Attachments, Return Receipt, Carbon Copies (including Blind Carbon Copies), Sorting, Address Book, Groups, Bulk Distribution. Given the range of fields on display in Fifty Years of Dungeons and Dragons I expected to find parts of it to be a bit of a drag, and while I cannot claim that I loved them all equally I found myself enjoying every single one of the book’s chapters. The third section splits the difference with a mixture of history and more social science perspectives, as well as a dose of personal memoir, to form a wider cultural analysis. Daniel Heath Justice’s reflection on finding D&D while growing up in an almost abandoned mining town and how to relate his indigenous identity to the race politics of the game is fascinating, but to me the real standout chapter has to be Kellynn Wee’s analysis of the D&D scene in Singapore. Singapore’s colonial history and the interplay of language, Chinese and South Asian cultures, and the specific tropes of D&D provide many avenues for analysis and most of them are in display in this chapter.
