Behind the scenes, the library does some synchronization and simple state management to keep everything smooth and reactive.

For about five years, my instinct when working on these stories is to reach for Mapbox, which has continually pushed the field ahead with innovations like vector tiles, a style specification and tools like tippecanoe. For some projects, I’m sure we’ll continue using Mapbox. But for most of our use cases, we don’t need the latest and greatest. And Mapbox has gotten expensive.

Here’s what we used instead:

OpenMapTiles for building tiles
Maputnik for style editing
PMTiles for tile hosting
Maplibre-gl-js for client-side rendering

War of the Regulation (c.1765-71). Oriented with west to top.

The Battle of Alamance takes its name from Great Alamance Creek near which it was fought; it was the final action in the so-called War of Regulation – a local conflict between citizens and colonial officials in North Carolina about taxation. It was fought between about 1,000 militia from Colonial North Carolina and 2,000 'Regulators'.

Georectification is the process of taking an image of a map and referencing it to a spatial grid, so that the image of the map can be used as a layer in other maps, or so that the image of the map can in turn be used for associating points of interest with the spatial grid. For instance, one might georectify a map of a city, then use that georectified map to find the latitudes and longitudes of buildings on the map.

To georectify a map, one identifies points on the image of the map which correspond to points in a coordinate reference system (a CRS, see the section on working with spatial data). In other word, one matches up points between a historical map and a contemporary way of keeping track of spatial data. An algorithm interpolates between those points to warp the map so that all parts of it line up to the grid.

The Tabula Peutingeriana is the only known surviving map of the Roman cursus publicus; it was made by a monk in Colmar in the thirteenth century. It is a parchment scroll, 0.34 m high and 6.75 m long, assembled from eleven sections, a medieval reproduction of the original scroll. It is a very schematic map: the land masses are distorted, especially in the east-west direction. The map shows many Roman settlements, the roads connecting them, rivers, mountains, forests and seas. The distances between the settlements are also given.

The table appears to be based on "itineraries", or lists of destinations along Roman roads, as the distances between points along the routes are indicated.[5] Travelers would not have possessed anything so sophisticated as a map, but they needed to know what lay ahead of them on the road and how far. The Peutinger table represents these roads as a series of roughly parallel lines along which destinations have been marked in order of travel.
