Pratchett, who died aged 66 in March 2015 following a yearslong battle with Alzheimer’s disease, theorized:

OK. Let’s say I call myself the Institute for Something-or-other and I decide to promote a spurious treatise saying the Jews were entirely responsible for the Second World War and the Holocaust didn’t happen. And it goes out there on the Internet and is available on the same terms as any piece of historical research which has undergone peer review and so on. There’s a kind of parity of esteem of information on the Net. It’s all there: there’s no way of finding out whether this stuff has any bottom to it or whether someone has just made it up.

Gates offered an optimistic response:

Not for long. Electronics gives us a way of classifying things. You will have authorities on the Net and because an article is contained in their index it will mean something. For all practical purposes, there’ll be an infinite amount of test out there and you’ll only receive a piece of text through levels of direction, like a friend who says, “hey, go read this”, or a brand name which is associated with a group of referees, or a particular expert, or consumer reports, or the equivalent of a newspaper... they’ll point out the things that are of particular interest. The whole way that you can check somebody’s reputation will be so much more sophisticated on the New than it is in print today.

This question was addressed in experiments concerned with categorization and reasoning among different types of tree experts (e.g., taxonomists, landscape workers, parks maintenance personnel). The results show an intriguing pattern of similarities and differences. Differences in sorting between taxonomists and maintenance workers reflect differences in weighting of morphological features. Landscape workers, in contrast, sort trees into goal-derived categories based on utilitarian concerns. These sorting patterns carry over into category-based reasoning for the taxonomists and maintenance personnel but not the landscape workers. These generalizations interact with taxonomic rank and suggest that the genus (or folk generic) level is relatively and in some cases absolutely privileged. Implications of these findings for theories of categorization are discussed.

The conventional definition of a conceptual class is that its members must possess certain properties in common. Vygotsky and Wittgenstein have shown that this definition is unrealistic and logically unnecessary. The resultant recognition of classificatory concepts formed by family resemblances has recently led to a revision of anthropological analyses of kinship and of belief statements. The present article reports the discovery that, by a remarkable convergence of ideas in the past decade, family resemblance predicates had already been adduced in certain natural sciences under the term 'polythetic classification'. The methodological and experimental results of this approach are set out, and a variety of consequences for social anthropology are drawn from them. A main conclusion is that comparative studies carried out in the stock classificatory terms of anthropology are subverted by the realisation that they refer not to common features but to polythetic classes of social facts. It is suggested that effective comparison may nevertheless be practicable by reliance on a purely formal terminology of analytical concepts, and it is envisaged that these may permit the determination of basic predicates in the study of human affairs.

In the second experiment, I find the two systems can be fooled by such simple transformations that they cannot possibly be listening to the music. In the third experiment, I find their internal models of the genres do not match how humans think the genres sound. Hence, it appears that the systems are not recognizing genre in the least. However, this seems to contradict the fact that they achieve extremely good classification accuracies, and have been touted as superior solutions in the literature. They typically consist of a set of concept names organized in a hierarchy. However, these names and structure are often not sufficient to fully capture the intended meaning of a taxonomy node, and particularly non-experts may have difficulty navigating and placing data into the taxonomy. This paper introduces two semi-supervised topic models that automatically augment a given taxonomy with many additional keywords by leveraging a corpus of multi-labeled documents. Our experiments show that users find the topics beneficial for taxonomy interpretation, substantially increasing their cataloging accuracy. Furthermore, the models provide a better information rate compared to Labeled LDA [7].

The technology for Crimson Hexagon is rooted in an algorithm created by Gary King, a professor at Harvard University's Institute for Quantitative Social Science. (Click here to view the study explaining the algorithm.)

According to Crimson Hexagon, the purpose of computer coding is to "take as data a potentially large set of text documents, of which a small subset is hand coded into an investigator-chosen set of mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories. As output, the methods give approximately unbiased and statistically consistent estimates of the proportion of all documents in each category."

Looking closely at http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-1/fr for the first

available) ...
I read that it is a *rdfs:subClassOf*
http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-1/iso639-1_Language

Well, why isn't it an *instance* of this class?
I can see the rationale : there is not "one" French language, one can
imagine further subclasses such as Canadian French, Middle-Age French etc.
so French is a class of languages OK.
But are there any subclasses of French defined at id.loc.gov ?

And if it were the case, where do one stop the subclasses recursion and
introduce instances, if any? Is it turtles all the way down?

"Paul Otlet (portrait) was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1868. His monumental book Traité de documentation. (Brussels, 1934) was both central and symbolic in the development of information science - then called 'Documentation' - in the first half of this century. In addition, it reminds us of something that has been too widely forgotten: That this field did have a lively existence in the early decades of this century and a sophistication concerning theory and information technology that now commonly surprises people."

We describe feature sets that represent different types of conjunctions and modal assessment, which together can partially indicate how different genres structure text and may prefer certain classes of attitudes towards propositions in the text. This enables analysis of large-scale rhetorical differences between genres by examining which features are important for classification. The specific domain we studied comprises scientific articles in historical and experimental sciences (paleontology and physical chemistry, respectively). We applied the SMO learning algorithm, which with our feature set achieved over 83% accuracy for classifying articles according to field, though no field-specific terms were used as features. The most highly-weighted features for each were consistent with hypothesized methodological differences between historical and experimental sciences, thus lending empirical evidence to the recent philosophical claim of multiple scientific methods.
