the FRBR-aligned Bibliographic Ontology (FaBiO), shich is used to describe of all the metadata of the citing and the cited resources (conference papers, book chapters, journal articles, etc.) and their related container resources (academic proceedings, books, journals, etc.), as well as metadata about the particular formats in which they have been embodied (digital vs. print, first and ending pages, etc.);

the Publishing Roles Ontology (PRO), which is used to describe the roles of agents (author, editor, publisher, etc.) related to bibliographic resource – while the order among these roles, specifying the order of author names in the list of authors of a paper, is handled by extending PRO with an additional property, i.e. oco:hasNext;

the Bibliographic Reference Ontology (BiRO) and the Citation Counting and Context Characterization Ontology (C4O) are used for describing the textual content of each reference in the reference list of a citing bibliographic resource;

and finally, the DataCite Ontology, which is used to define all the identifiers (e.g. DOI, PubMed ID, PubMed Central ID, ORCID, ISSN, etc.) for the bibliographic resources and all the agents involved, while the Friend Of A Friend (FOAF) ontology is used to define additional data about agents (specifically their names).

For convenience, all the terms from the aforementioned ontologies are collected within a new ontology called OpenCitations Ontology (OCO). This is not yet another bibliographic ontology, but rather just a place where existing complementary ontological entities from several other ontologies are grouped together for the purpose of providing descriptive metadata for the OCC.

In 2012–2013, a team led by Ray Siemens at the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab (ETCL), in collaboration with Implementing New Knowledge Environments (INKE), developed three annotated bibliographies under the rubric of “social knowledge creation.” The items for the bibliographies were gathered and annotated by members of the Electric Textual Cultures Lab (ETCL) to form this tripartite document as a resource for students and researchers involved in the INKE team and well beyond, including at digital humanities seminars in Bern (June 2013) and Leipzig (July 2013). Gathered here, the result of this initiative might best be approached as an expeditious environmental scan, a necessarily partial snapshot of scholarship coalescing around an emerging area of critical interest. The project did not seek to establish a canon, but instead to provide a transient representation of interrelational research areas through a process of collaborative aggregation. The annotated bibliography is purposefully focused on the active, present, and future “social knowledge creation” instead of the passive and past “social construction of knowledge,” in which its roots lie. The difference in emphasis signals a newfound concern with (re)shaping processes that produce knowledge, and doing so in ways that productively reposition sociological and historical approaches. Taken together, the three parts of the bibliography connect contemporary thinking about new knowledge production with a range of Web 2.0 digital tools and game-design models for redesigning knowledge processes to better facilitate collaboration.

The Report urges reuse of metadata but legacy data is a continuing problem rather than a solution. The report urges cooperation but offers a model of exploitation and reliance. The report assumes that all differences in information creation and use will be no problem for if we demand that everyone accept our (?) standards we can accept metadata as is. The report denies that service to sophisticated users is of value to the larger community.
