The traditional conception of the "middle class" has been dead for a long time. The high-wage homeowning union workers who traditionally bridged the gap between low-wage workers and high-salary professionals has been practically eradicated. Just as income inequality between capitalists and workers has ballooned exponentially, so too has the gap between low-wage and high-salary job grown to the size of the Grand Canyon.

When politician scum talk about the "middle class" they are talking about the high-salary (white) professionals who own nice houses in suburbs and traditionally vote Republican because they love tax revolt politics. Focusing on that "middle class" is the chief delusion that has infected the Democratic Party for decades. So while Mooch is right about the empty moral posturing he's being disingenuous and suggesting the Dems run the same losing strategy they've been obsessed with since the 1980s.

It is to build, as fast as possible, movements or parties that declare war on corporate power, engage in sustained acts of civil disobedience and seek to reintegrate the disenfranchised—the “losers”—back into the economy and political life of the country. This movement will never come out of the Democratic Party. If Clinton prevails in the general election Trump may disappear, but the fascist sentiments will expand. Another Trump, perhaps more vile, will be vomited up from the bowels of the decayed political system. We are fighting for our political life. Tremendous damage has been done by corporate power and the college-educated elites to our capitalist democracy. The longer the elites, who oversaw this disemboweling of the country on behalf of corporations—who believe, as does CBS Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves, that however bad Trump would be for America he would at least be good for corporate profit—remain in charge, the worse it is going to get.

Third, there’s the default presumption of the correctness of a certain kind of politics, and political vocabulary, descended from the academic left. These politics are radical in their vocabulary, and in their (correct) assumptions of the entrenched and universal existence of social ills like racism and sexism, though they tend in practice to be much more concerned with social and linguistic expectations than with material or class analysis. (Again, trapped in language.) So these politics tend to be rather extreme on the descriptive end but rather inert on the prescriptive end; they’re the politics of critics, not of organizers. This political tendency interfaces with the knowingness tendency to create the basic communicative enforcement mechanism for these politics. It’s not merely that you should have a particular stance on particular political issues, but that you should have already known well enough to know what the correct stance is at the start of every controversy. Politics, in this culture, is analytically easy; every conflict has an obvious and correct stance that all good people assumed in the first place. It’s not just that you are on the right side, but that you can’t believe anyone didn’t already know the correct side at the very start of every debate.

"But promoting widespread ownership of urban and suburban real estate as the primary investment vehicle for middle class families turns the whole thing on its head. A house is two things, a parcel of land and a kind of complicated manufactured good that sits atop it. In other words, it's a commodity and a consumer durable good—similar to a car (consumer durable) that needs gasoline (commodity) to run. But even though both automobiles and tanks full of gasoline are widely owned in the United States, politicians don't run around trying to promote expensive cars and gasoline because we rightly recognize that this would reduce living standards not raise them. But by encouraging mainstream middle class families to make large leveraged investments in houses, you create a politics around promoting housing scarcity. The problem here is that while any given person can certainly profit from the house he or she owns (or, more plausibly, the land it sits on) appreciating in value more rapidly than average, it's extremely difficult to see how a nation as a whole is going to become more prosperous by houses becoming more expensive. If we banned the construction of new cars and trucks, then America's existing stock of cars and trucks would become more valuable but this would be a way of impoverishing the country not enriching it."

“Finding available quality spaces is the biggest challenge,” says TRSL General Manager Jeff Lerner. “If more spaces became available, we could fill them up fairly quickly.”
“There’s no shortage of people,” says Rob Davies, the TSSC director of operations, of the 75,000 active members of his club. He says there are 50-60 teams each season on waiting lists that cannot be accommodated, and because new registrations for popular sports and time-slots fill up online in less than five minutes, the league now runs a registration lottery to ensure all teams have an equal chance at playing.
The lack of good spaces means that many games wind up being played on far-flung and sometimes poorly-maintained fields that can make games less fun and less safe—compacted turf that’s hard on the knees, for instance. And moreover, many other people are denied the chance to play at all. There are some possible solutions to the problem, and one would think that in Rob Ford’s customer-service and private-partnership-oriented city hall, serving this demand might be a priority. But the truth is the city isn’t making more parkland available in any kind of hurry.

They emanated from a small event held at a private residence in Toronto’s downtown, featuring guest speakers Andrew Coyne and John Tory and co-organized by Liberal Party insider Zach Paikin.
As news of the event spread, some began to express apprehension about the inclusiveness of the gathering, spurred by factors incuding its semi-public invitation mechanism, stated dress code, and, later, pictures tweeted from inside the venue.
Inevitably, these critiques culminated in the all-too-familiar refrain: “What’s with all the white guys?”

He happens to have found a convenient arch-nemesis in the Toronto Star, but it’s really the entire institution of print media that he’d like to bring into disrepute. Any forum that is conducive to investigation and analysis is necessarily going to be unkind to Ford’s truths, and so he shifts the discussion around each scandal to the act of reporting on the scandal itself. The media — one big amorphous blob of information and innuendo — becomes the enemy, with only the Fords delivering the unvarnished certainties via talk radio. It’s devious and it’s brilliant, and it allows him to bring his supporters’ perceived reality in line with his own warped, entitled, and paranoid view of the world. But I’m not terribly worried, because as dire as the newspaper business is these days, it will still outlast Rob Ford."

Plutonomy refers to the rich, those who buy luxury goods and so on, and that’s where the action is. They claimed that their plutonomy index was way outperforming the stock market. As for the rest, we set them adrift. We don’t really care about them. We don’t really need them. They have to be around to provide a powerful state, which will protect us and bail us out when we get into trouble, but other than that they essentially have no function. These days they’re sometimes called the “precariat”—people who live a precarious existence at the periphery of society. Only it’s not the periphery anymore. It’s becoming a very substantial part of society in the United States and indeed elsewhere. And this is considered a good thing."

"Mincome is the name of an experimental Canadian Basic income project that was held in Dauphin, Manitoba during the 1970s. The project, funded jointly by the Manitoba provincial government and the Canadian federal government, began with a news release on February 22, 1974, and was closed down in 1979. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether a guaranteed, unconditional annual income actually caused disincentive to work for the recipients, and how great such a disincentive would be. A final report was never issued, but Dr. Evelyn Forget [for-ZHAY] has conducted analysis of the research. She found that only new mothers and teenagers worked less. Mothers with newborns stopped working because they wanted to stay at home longer with their babies, and and teenagers worked less because they weren't under as much pressure to support their families, which resulted in more teengers graduating. In addition, those who continued to work were given more opportunities to choose what type of work they did. In addition, Forget finds that in the period that Mincome was administered, hospital visits dropped 8.5 per cent, with fewer incidences of work-related injuries, and fewer fewer emergency room visits from car accidents and domestic abuse.[1]"

‘Old Cicero’ was Toronto’s first black city councillor
By Roger Hunziker

Hubbard jumps out and saves the man from drowning: it is George Brown, famous editor of the Globe newspaper, and future Father of Confederation. In gratitude Brown hires Hubbard as his driver, and over time a friendship develops. Much later, the fatherly Brown would urge his young friend to enter politics, which Hubbard finally does in 1893.

The law was named for its developer, Charles Goodhart (a chief economic advisor to the Bank of England)."

"it may be odd for you to think about, but MIT in the 1960s had two interesting characteristics. One was it was almost entirely funded by the Pentagon. In fact, I was in a lab which was 100 percent funded by the three armed services. Two, it was the main center of antiwar resistance. I’m not talking about dissent or, you know, protest. I’m talking about resistance, you know, organizing resistance activities, illegal activities. And the Pentagon didn’t care much, because, contrary to what a lot of people believe, one of the main functions of the Pentagon is just to provide a cover for the way the economy functions. The way the economy functions, it’s—you know, people like to claim it’s a free market economy, but, you know, most of it comes out of the state sector—I mean, computers, internet, airplanes, you know. The idea is the public is supposed to pay the costs and take the risks, and if anything works out, you hand it over to private enterprise. That’s called the free market."
