MECC succeeds by enabling the following.

Informed decisions
The key question answered is no longer, "How does the organization get information to the right people at the right time?", but rather, "How does the organization create a system where everyone can consume information (self-serve) and contribute, regardless of level or function?"
Fast decisions
While other management philosophies prioritize the speed of knowledge transfer, MECC optimizes for the speed of knowledge retrieval.
Many decisions
Conventional management philosophies often strive for consensus and avoid risk instead of a bias for action, resulting in less frequent decision making. When you're operating in a MECC mindset, success is measured by the quantity of decisions made in a particular stretch of time (e.g. month, quarter) and the results that stem from faster progress.
Executing on decisions
Being more informed, making faster decisions, and increasing decision making velocity is only useful if you execute. MECC empowers everyone to contribute to successful execution. At Valve, you don’t apply to transfer through some ridiculous and corrupt bureaucratic machine and hope to hell the other team has “headcount” (knowing that your boss will probably fire you if the transfer falls through) as you would in most companies. You just move your desk and join another team. (Presumably, they have to agree that they want you on it, but they’re not constrained by moronic “headcount” limitations.)

Open allocation is not a free-for-all. In fact, it increases individual accountability because no one has the excuse of being put on a bad project or landing under a shitty boss. If you fail to make an impact in an open-allocation shop, it’s on you. You had the same opportunities to succeed as everyone else.]]></description>

It’s counterintuitive, but Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos takes a totally different approach to hiring: he gives prospects a hiring anti-pitch.

Rather than tell prospects how happy and amazing Amazon is, Jeff Bezos would tell them that “it’s not easy to work here.” Even in 1997, during the dot-com boom, Bezos’s anti-pitch was stark and to the point: “You can work long, hard, or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three.”

Bezos’s anti-pitch certainly made it tough to hire in Amazon’s early days, and it frustrated his management team who were desperate to staff up.

But it had a powerful, intended effect — there was no disillusionment over what Amazon was when the prospect eventually joined. Those who chose Amazon in spite of the anti-pitch knew what they were getting into, and had in fact self-selected for the challenge. Amazon became known as a company whose engineers were intense and elite.]]></description>

I was expecting (actually kind of hoping) he would mention things like catered lunch, company outings, etc. Instead he just said, "more money". I was a little taken aback - not because I thought he didn't deserve a raise (he got one) - but because that seemed obvious to me. After deeper thought there was an underlying meaning. Smart people want to be treated like smart people. Not like "cowboys" or "ninjas" - they want to know that they work in place where their opinions are respected and a place where they can continue to learn and grow. Most would also rather just get the money that a company would spend on perks to spend themselves.]]></description>

"- They’ve been burned in the past. They hired someone on who misrepresented himself, his abilities, his capacity, or all of the above. They feel that they gave it a try and it isn’t for them…

- They don’t have their heads screwed on right. They live in a “constantly evolving and fast-paced” environment (as seen on other job postings) which translates roughly into we can’t control our product team, our CEO, or worst, what our sales team promises, so you’re going to have to sit by and wait for the hour-by-hour priorities…

- A slight variation of the previous option is that they lack the confidence in their abilities. They have the vision, the product specs are nailed down, but they don’t know if they can convey them without “reading” the other person.

- Finally, the last possible option is that they’re so out of touch with reality that they believe the only way for work to be done is with “asses in seats.”
