Most Computer Science Departments have opted for the latter easy way out.) But, Brethren, I ask you: is this honest? Is not our prolonged silence fretting away Computing Science's intellectual integrity? Are we decent by remaining silent? If not, how do we speak up?

A traditional free software application is configurable so that it has the union of all features anyone's ever seen in any equivalent application on any other historical platform. Or even configurable to be the union of all applications that anyone's ever seen on any historical platform (Emacs *cough*).

Does this hurt anything? Yes it does. It turns out that preferences have a cost. Of course, some preferences also have important benefits - and can be crucial interface features. But each one has a price, and you have to carefully consider its value. Many users and developers don't understand this, and end up with a lot of cost and little value for their preferences dollar.

Too many preferences means you can't find any of them. While I use X-Chat every day and am fundamentally friendly to it, I have to pick on it in this paragraph and hope the maintainer is good-natured. It has so many preferences that there's a whole menu just to hold all the different preferences dialogs. Plus you can script it - in your choice of languages. If I want to change something about X-Chat, it takes me eons just to find the right button.

Preferences really substantively damage QA and testing. As someone who reads dozens of bug reports per day, and occasionally fixes a couple, I can tell you that it's extremely common to find a bug that only happens if some certain combination of options are enabled. As a software developer, I can tell you that preferences frequently do add quite a bit of code complexity as well; some more than others, but even simple preferences can add a lot of complexity if there are 200 of them.

Upshot: more preferences means fewer real features, and more bugs.

now, and will be for some time, memory access. Hardware designers have come up with ever
more sophisticated memory handling and acceleration techniques–such as CPU caches–but
these cannot work optimally without some help from the programmer. Unfortunately, neither
the structure nor the cost of using the memory subsystem of a computer or the caches on CPUs
is well understood by most programmers. This paper explains the structure of memory subsystems in use on modern commodity hardware, illustrating why CPU caches were developed, how
they work, and what programs should do to achieve optimal performance by utilizing them

This post isn't about Divmod, exactly.

I've been mulling over these ideas for quite a while, and I think I may still have more thinking to do, but recent events have gotten me thinking again about the increasing urgency of the need for a professional code of conduct for computer programmers. Mark Russinovich reported on Sony BMG's criminal contempt for the integrity of their customer's computers, and some days later CNET reported on Sony BMG's halfhearted, temporary retraction of their crime. A day later, CNet's front page has news of Apple trying to institutionalize, as well as patent, a similar technique. While the debate over DRM continues to rage, there are larger issues and principles at stake here that it doesn't seem like anyone is talking about: when you run a program on your computer, who is really in charge?

Others have measured Debian GNU/Linux and the Perl CPAN library using this tool suite. SLOCCount runs on GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Apple Mac OS X, Windows, and hopefully on other systems too. To run on Windows, you have to install Cygwin first to create a Unix-like environment for SLOCCount (Cygwin users: be sure to use ``Unix'' newlines, not ``DOS'' newlines, when you install Cygwin)."

"At the Kernel Summit in Prague last week Kay Sievers and I lead a session on developing shared userspace libraries, for kernel hackers. More and more userspace interfaces of the kernel (for example many which deal with storage, audio, resource management, security, file systems or a number of other subsystems) nowadays rely on a dedicated userspace component. As people who work primarily in the plumbing layer of the Linux OS we noticed over and over again that these libraries written by people who usually are at home on the kernel side of things make the same mistakes repeatedly, thus making life for the users of the libraries unnecessarily difficult. In our session we tried to point out a number of these things, and in particular places where the usual kernel hacking style translates badly into userspace shared library hacking. Our hope is that maybe a few kernel developers have a look at our list of recommendations and consider the points we are raising."
