While these sorting experiments are fun, they have several drawbacks:

Nobody really wants a huge globally sorted output. We haven’t found a single use case for the problem as stated.

They show that the system is capable of performing well, although they de-emphasise how much effort it is. MapReduce needed a lot of tuning to perform this well. Indeed, we saw many MapReduce jobs in production that perform poorly due to what we would call misconfiguration.
Lately, we've been instead focusing on building systems that make tuning for the most part unnecessary. For example, Dataflow figures out the number of shards automatically (and dynamically reshards as necessary) which takes the manual guesswork out of the picture. But we’ll leave this topic, and the results achieved, for future blog posts.]]></description>

An avid cyclist, Ian Walker had heard several complaints from fellow riders that wearing a helmet seemed to result in bike riders receiving far less room to maneuver—effectively increasing the chances of an accident. So, Walker attached ultrasonic sensors to his bike and rode around Bath, allowing 2,300 vehicles to overtake him while he was either helmeted or naked-headed. In the process, he was actually contacted by a truck and a bus, both while helmeted—though, miraculously, he did not fall off his bike either time.]]></description>
