    <dc:creator>rtlechow</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[All decidable problems can be solved with algorithms. For all we know, humans are Turing machines.

Most problems can be structured into a graph. Graphs have vertices (entities holding data) and edges (from one vertex to another, sometimes with a value).

Many problems can be structured into a tree. Trees are connected graphs without cycles. Most trees we use are rooted: one vertex is the entry point (the root); it is the only vertex with no edge pointing to it, all other have exactly one. Many trees are ordered: vertices order their children like a list.

Some problems can be structured into a list. Lists are rooted trees where a maximum of one child is allowed.

A few problems can be structured into a map. Maps are directed graphs where every vertex has either a single edge coming from them (keys) or at least one edge coming from a key (values).

(An uncommon variation of maps are multimaps, where keys can have more than a single edge coming from them.)

Another structure is a set. Sets are graphs with no edges.]]></description>

They didn’t find Alice or Scratch or Blockly — none of the things that would be our first choices for CS education opportunities on-line.  Betsy and her students show how we accidentally hide our resources from the uneducated and under-privileged, by presuming that the searchers are well-educated and privileged.  They point out that this is one way that open education resources actually actually increase the socioeconomic gap, by not being easily discoverable by those without privilege.]]></description>

    <dc:creator>rtlechow</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Years ago, I remember reading one of Martin Gardner’s Mathematical Games columns (from March, 1962, in case you want to look it up) where he described an interesting machine for playing tic-tac-toe. It was made entirely out of matchboxes, each one of which had a tic tac toe position on the top. Inside was a collection of colored beads. Each color specified a possible legal move for the position on top. The idea was that you’d play a game by drawing these beads from the appropriate box, and making the appropriate move. At the end of the game, you’d remove the bead from the last box that sent you along the losing path. Eventually, all the losing moves get removed, and the machine plays perfect tic-tac-toe. ]]></description>
