Personal Machines and Portable Worlds - Christopher Butler
2023-07-09T19:58:31+00:00
https://www.chrbutler.com/personal-machines-and-portable-worlds
robertogreco âMy book is so much about how technology dictates culture. The devices that we use arenât just accessories to culture or windows that we consume things through; they are collaborators, gateways, and moldsâŠthe idea of a personal computer had to be invented, manufactured, and marketed. We had to imagine computers as personal machines.â
This is an important point. We could live in a world where computing is a public worksâââwhere terminals to central processing work like telephones used to. You can pick them up or put them down, but nothing inside of them is yours. But we donât live in that world. As soon as the first computer booted up in the first home, the computer became a personal object. And when an object becomes personal, it is difficult to leave it behind. We want it with us.
Perhaps that one thingâââa simple desire for a personal machineâââset us on the course we have followed since. Not Mooreâs Law, not Capitalism, but personhood.
Later, in the same post, Chayka writes of the Palm Pilotâââan early attempt at portable computingâââthat, despite it not providing much in the way of âfunâ features for a kid, there was still an âineffable appeal to holding a gateway to a digital world in your hand.â
A world. Thereâs that word again.
Why a world? There is a sense of dimensional transcendence to computers. As C.S. Lewis wrote of the wardrobe, âItâs inside is bigger than its outside.â In the early days of mobile computing, it was hard to not compare the capaciousness of a computer you could carry with you to something like a book. Of both you could say their insides were bigger than their outsides, but when it came to information, youâd have to settle for figurative capaciousness in a book; their actual contents are literally cover to cover. A digital machineâs contents are an entirely different thing.
In the time of the Palm Pilot, a tiny door to a vast digital world was more powerful as an idea than a tool. The digital world just wasnât as big back then as it is now. But to Chaykaâs first point, we built the digital world using these little devices that didnât do very much. We made it worth the journey. And meanwhile, the object was our companion, and inside was a tiny, personal digital worldâââour notes, our messages, our few digital texts. It was not much, but it was ours."
...
"Many of the examples Iâve looked at so far align with my ideas of what makes a machine personal because they were designed with limitations imposed upon them, and many of the examples Iâve discussed that no longer feel personal have been designed to surpass those limitations. If machines were designed to be more personal, weâd have very different machines.
Sometimes it feels like it is simply a matter of whether a machine is connected to the internet or not. But of course itâs more than that. Itâs as much about what we do with our machines as it is about what they were designed to do.
I think we can still experience the personal machine by choosing to experience a machine that way.
In a way, the continued popularity of vinyl is a good example of this. For the same price as a single record, you can get several months of access to more music than you could ever hear in that time. Still, some people choose records over digital files. Itâs too easy to dismiss this as an affectation. Itâs a choice to experience music in a particular way. Itâs also a choice of a personal machineâââa record player rather than a phone.
One benefit of personal technology reaching the maturity it has is the abundance of choices. It may seem like you must use an iPhoneâââperhaps everyone you know and care about is group messaging with iMessageâââbut you can choose something else. Every choice has benefits and costs. Ten years ago, I chose to leave Facebook. The benefits were many; the costs were not having easy access to where people I cared about shared information I wanted to know. A few years ago, I stopped using an e-readerâââI had used a Kindle, and then a Kobo, both great machines. The cost was no longer being able to send articles from the web to my machine and reading them, as well as books, in bed. The benefit was not having too many choices in front of me when I just want to read one thing. I went back to the printed book. You could say thatâs as much of an affectation in 2023 as playing a vinyl record. Maybe. But itâs a choice.
I havenât owned a laptop for many years. My primary machine is a Mac Mini set up in my home office. The cost is I canât work from my couch or the local coffee shop. The benefit is I have some separation in my life between work and not work.
For me, these choices turn using the same machines everyone uses into a more personal experience."
...
"I also notice that when I look at these older machines and the old media they use, I often find myself feeling like Iâm looking at a door to a world. I look at a bookâââthereâs a world. Every playable disc in our houseâââeach a world.
Once you become accustomed to worldspotting, you can see them in anything. Every object is a world.
In the World; of the Worlds
Perhaps the days of personal machines are over. Maybe the complexities that Mau and his cohort wrote about are not safely reducible. Maybe we canât decomplexify the world of things. Maybe. And if we can, I wouldnât dare imagine it could happen quickly.
But if we can, where do we start? What do we look at? What do we use again, despite there being sleeker, faster, frictionless options available? What limits do we embrace so that we can re-balance the human with the machine?
I have spent the last few years slowly disconnecting in various ways. Iâve chosen to use things that only do a part of what readily available alternatives do and more. Iâve chosen to stop using some things altogether. I have found that these choices have enhanced my experiences because theyâve supported true insight; theyâve helped me be more aware of what Iâm doing, why Iâm doing it, and who I am becoming. I have found that they change the world because they change my world.
Jung said that in each of us is another. I think that in each of us is another world. A good personal machine reveals that world and helps us shape it."]]>

HEWN, No. 250
2018-01-27T21:56:24+00:00
https://tinyletter.com/audreywatters/letters/hewn-no-250
robertogreco If science fiction is the mythology of modern technology, then its myth is tragic. âTechnology,â or âmodern scienceâ (using the words as they are usually used, in an unexamined shorthand standing for the âhardâ sciences and high technology founded upon continuous economic growth), is a heroic undertaking, Herculean, Promethean, conceived as triumph, hence ultimately as tragedy. The fiction embodying this myth will be, and has been, triumphant (Man conquers earth, space, aliens, death, the future, etc.) and tragic (apocalypse, holocaust, then or now).
If, however, one avoids the linear, progressive, Timeâs-(killing)-arrow mode of the Techno-Heroic, and redefines technology and science as primarily cultural carrier bag rather than weapon of domination, one pleasant side effect is that science fiction can be seen as a far less rigid, narrow field, not necessarily Promethean or apocalyptic at all, and in fact less a mythological genre than a realistic one.
The problems of technology â and the problems of the storytelling about the computing industry today, which seems to regularly turn to the worst science fiction for inspiration â is bound up in all this. Thereâs a strong desire to create, crown, and laud the Hero â a tendency thatâs going to end pretty badly if we donât start thinking about care and community (and carrier bags) and dial back this wretched fascination with weapons, destruction, and disruption.
(Something like this, I wonder: âThe Ones Who Walk Away From Omelasâ by Ursula K. Le Guin.)
Elsewhere in the history of the future of technology: âSorry, Alexa Is Not a Feminist,â says Ian Bogost. âThe People Who Would Survive Nuclear Warâ by Alexis Madrigal.
There are many reasons to adore Ursula K. Le Guin. And there are many pieces of her writing, of course, one could point to and insist âyou must read this. You must.â For me, the attraction was her grounding in cultural anthropology â I met Le Guin at a California Folklore Society almost 20 years ago when I was a graduate student in Folklore Studies â alongside her willingness to challenge the racism and imperialism and expropriation that the field engendered. It was her fierce criticism of capitalism and her commitment to freedom. Iâm willing to fight anyone who tries to insist that Sometimes a Great Notion is the great novel of the Pacific Northwest. Really, you should pick almost any Le Guin novel in its stead â Always Coming Home, perhaps. Or The Word for the World is Forest. She was the most important anarchist of our era, I posted on Facebook when I shared the NYT obituary. It was a jab at another Oregon writer who I bet thinks thatâs him. But like Kesey, his notion is all wrong.
Fewer Heroes. Better stories about people. Better worlds for people.
Yours in struggle,
~Audrey"]]>

Africa Has Always Been Sci-Fi | Literary Hub
2016-04-05T23:15:27+00:00
http://lithub.com/africa-has-always-been-sci-fi/
robertogreco Hereâs my list of âAfrican SF.â Itâs really short ⊠How do I define African SF? I donât. I know it when I see it ⊠The main fact is that this list DOES exist. Africans ARE writing their own science fiction, contrary to what some may think. But the fact is that Africans need to also write more of it.
When building a canon, the question of inclusion becomes paramount. If the African v. African American debate seems unduly academic or divisive, just imagine when the question of race comes in: what does it mean, as Okorafor notes, that the first major African science fiction film, District 9, was directed by a white South African? In another essay, âIs Africa Ready for Science Fiction?,â Okorafor cites two expertsâa Nollywood director and a scholar of African fictionâwho both essentially say no. Though she is more optimistic on the question, Okorafor explains: âIn Africa, science fiction is still perceived as not being real literature. It is not serious writing.⊠African audiences donât feel that science fiction is really concerned with whatâs real, whatâs present. Itâs not tangible.â
But to take the intangible, the unreal, the absent and make of them a world is precisely the mandate of science fiction. In his remarkable ur-Afrofuturist film Space is the Place (1974), Sun Ra, adorned in Egyptian regalia, travels to Oakland, CA to recruit black folk to colonize the planet Saturn. Like some kind of intergalactic Marcus Garvey, he wants to âset up a colony for black people ⊠bring them here through transmolecularization ⊠or teleport the whole planet here ⊠through music.â He tells dissipated hipsters at the local youth center: âIâm not real. Iâm just like you. You donât exist in this society. If you did, your people wouldnât be seeking equal rights. Youâre not real. If you were, youâd have some status among the nations of the world. So weâre both myths. I do not come to you as a reality. I come to you as the myth. Because thatâs what black people are, myths.â Afrofuturismâs insight is to elide the African diaspora with outer space as loci of blackness, roiling vats of inky, rich, infinite potential. The etymology of utopia, after all, is ou + topos, or not + place. Introducing himself to a wino, Sun Ra cryptically declaims: âI am everything and nothing.â"]]>

All our imagined futures | A Working Library
2016-02-22T00:28:53+00:00
http://aworkinglibrary.com/writing/all-our-imagined-futures/
robertogreco Such cuts can be made more or less fairly, and the richest really ought to pay the most, but the crucial thing is that they are made. Because, above all, stopping climate change means giving up on growth.
That will be hard. Not only will our standards of living almost certainly drop, but itâs likely that the very quality of our societyâequality, safety, and trustâwill decline, too. Thatâs not something to be giddy about, but itâs still a price that those of us living in affluent countries should prepare to pay. Because however difficult it is to slow down, flooding Bangladesh cannot be an option. In other words, we can and should act. Itâs just going to hurt.
Thereâs the rub: those of us living in affluent countries must pay. Porter presumes that technology can get us out of climate change without that paymentâthat nuclear energy, renewables, carbon capture, and electric cars will let us continue to consume at current levels as if nothing had changed. (As an aside: you can follow the American love of cars all the way to Immortan Joeâs citadel.) But I donât think itâs likely weâre going to get off that easy. Carbon capture is still a pipe dream, nuclear energy will take too long to ramp up even absent strong local objections, electric cars are hardly a panacea, and renewables such as solar and wind, while certainly promising, wonât help much if we continue to pull coal and oil out of the ground at the rates we are now.
As it happens, though, I think Porterâs instinct to reach for science fiction to understand the future is a useful one. In Submergence, J.M. Ledgardâs novel of planetary depths, Danny remarks: âIf this was happening in a science-fiction world we would see it clearly for what it is, but we donât because itâs happening here and now.â Fiction, and science fiction in particular, can help us imagine many futures, and in particular can help us to direct our imaginations towards the futures we want. Imagining a particular kind of future isnât just day dreaming: itâs an important and active framing that makes it possible for us to construct a future that approaches that imagined vision. In other words, imagining the future is one way of making that future happen. Writing in Essence in 2000, Octavia Butler asked,
So why try to predict the future at all if itâs so difficult, so nearly impossible? Because making predictions is one way to give warning when we see ourselves drifting in dangerous directions. Because prediction is a useful way of pointing out safer, wiser courses. Because, most of all, our tomorrow is the child of our today. Through thought and deed, we exert a great deal of influence over this child, even though we canât control it absolutely. Best to think about it, though. Best to try to shape it into something good. Best to do that for any child.
Butlerâs Parable of the Sower is, like Mad Max, a tale of the road. And, like Mad Max, itâs a difficult but hopeful one. Maybe Porter should read it."]]>
