"The fastest way to publish on the web."

[via:
https://simonbc.com/rebuilding-jottit

"In 2007, Aaron Swartz and I built a small tool called Jottit. The idea was simple: make it as easy as possible to put a page on the web. You typed something, clicked a button, and got a page on a secret URL. You didn't need to create an account first. If you wanted to keep it, you claimed it with your email and put it on a subdomain.

Aaron had this phrase that stuck with me. He wanted the cognitive load to be so tiny that you just use it without even thinking about whether you should.

That was the web back then. It was small and personal and a little weird. People made pages because they had something to say, not because they were building an audience. The tools were simple because the ambitions were simple: put something out there, see what happens.

I was finishing my CS degree at the time and spent every free hour working on Jottit. I wanted to make it perfect. I would write code or improve the design and send it over to Aaron and he'd critique it down to the smallest detail. Eventually we met up in Somerville, MA in September 2007 and spent two weeks getting it ready for launch.

We launched and it clicked. People got it immediately. And then only a few months later my dad got diagnosed with cancer and died just a few weeks after that. I didn't want to work on Jottit again. I didn't want to do any programming again.

Then Aaron died in 2013.

I would think back on Aaron and those six months, creating Jottit together. I remembered the joy and the excitement of that time. But I never went back to it. It felt too heavy. And eventually the original Jottit went offline.

I spent the next fifteen years working as a developer, raising four kids with my wife, building other people's products.

Then last year something shifted. I kept seeing people express a longing for the old web. Before social media turned every thought into content and every person into a brand. Before the timeline replaced blogs. I felt it too. I started working on an open-source microblogging tool inspired by Jottit, but at some point I thought: why don't I just build Jottit instead?

I emailed Paul Graham about funding it and to my surprise he said yes. I quit my job.

Aaron believed the web should be easy enough that anyone could participate. Not just people who know how to code or who can afford a platform's cut. That idea hasn't aged. If anything it matters more now, when most people's only option for putting words online is to hand them to a corporation.

Jottit is back at jottit.org. Same idea, same name, rebuilt from scratch. You type, you publish, you have a page. No tracking, no followers, no algorithms.

It's a small project, not a startup. I just wanted it to exist again."]

[archived:
https://archive.ph/PzBim ]

"Over the years, lots of people have tried to chart an online life without Big Tech companies. Reasons abound, from advertising ickiness to data privacy to the overall feeling that these companies don’t support your values, but my impression was always that the project is hard, and that getting away from Google and Apple and Microsoft and the rest is probably too much work for most people.

I’m not sure that’s true anymore. Whether you’re looking for an email service, an office suite, even a smartphone or a laptop, you have more and broader options than ever before. Which is good, because the number of people asking me for tips on how to embrace these new things has gone way up over the last few months. Again, reasons abound. So I asked you all to share your favorite non-Big Tech tech, and as always, you delivered.
First up, there’s kind of a big four:

• Proton. Almost everybody who told me they’re ditching Google told me they’re moving to Proton. And with good reason! Proton does email, calendar, docs, file storage, and more, and does it all really well. This is the first place I’d tell almost anyone to start.

• Signal. The messaging app of choice, by a mile. Like Proton, it is an incredibly privacy-focused tool that is still easy and nice to use. I have nothing but good feelings about Signal.

• Nextcloud. This one I did not expect! It’s another suite of services, with a lot of impressive features, but in addition to everything else it is open-source and can even be self-hosted. There is definitely a version of the non-Big Tech journey that ends in hosting a lot of your own software, and I think this is a big part of the equation.

• Home Assistant. For the smart home crowd, there is really only one choice.

Beyond that, there was a bunch of other software:

• Lots of folks are replacing Google Search with either Kagi or Ecosia. As for browsers, it was pretty much all Firefox.

• Linux Mint came up a bunch as a user-friendly way out of the Big Tech operating systems. It’s harder to get away from Android and iOS, but GrapheneOS is a popular alternative for mobile.

• Jellyfin appears to be the media platform of choice. Some Plex love, too, but mostly Jellyfin.

• Obsidian, one of my favorite note-taking apps, is a favorite as well. Since it’s built on text files, it is futureproof, unlike virtually any other software you’ll find.

And a bunch of gadgets:

• Oh boy do you all love Garmin smartwatches! I’m still a little skeptical that they work for anyone other than hardcore fitness folks, but you all love them as Apple and Pixel Watch alternatives.

• The Sunbeam F1 flip phones, which actually look like they offer a pretty clever set of features, have some very devoted smartphone-ditching fans out there.

• Couple of votes for the Playdate, too, as a less intense way to game.

• I got lots of E Ink device recommendations. Boox gear came up a lot. The Xteink X4, the little e-reader that sticks to the back of your phone, seems to have captured some hearts out there. A bunch of you also endorsed ditching Kindle for Kobo, but I think that only half counts, given that Kobo is also owned by a large tech company? Oh, and this is software, but The StoryGraph appears to be everyone’s new favorite reading platform.

If I were starting this journey today, I think I’d start with Proton and Home Assistant. Getting your email, your calendar, and your files into a safer place, and turning your smart home into something only you control, is a nice way to kick off a different relationship with tech. But give me six months, and who knows? Maybe I’ll be self-hosting my entire computing life in my basement. Installer Web Services has a nice ring to it."

"Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer is a WordPress plugin designed to combat link rot—the gradual decay of web links as pages are moved, changed, or taken down. It automatically scans your post content—on save and across existing posts—to detect outbound links. For each one, it checks the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine for an archived version and creates a snapshot if one isn’t available.

When a linked page disappears, the plugin helps preserve your user experience by redirecting visitors to a reliable archived version. It also works proactively by archiving your own posts every time they’re updated, creating a consistent backup of your content’s history.

Protect your links, preserve your content, and automate the archiving process—all with minimal effort.
Key Features

• Automatically scans for outbound links in post content
• Checks the Wayback Machine for existing archives
• Creates new snapshots if no archive exists
• Redirects broken or missing links to archived versions
• Archives your own posts on updates
• Works on both new and existing content
• Helps maintain long-term content reliability and SEO"

"Software is important to people. Most of us spend our workdays in front of computers. We use the computer in our pocket tens if not hundreds of times every day. The apps we use are almost exclusively mass-market, sold on an app-store, made for thousands if not millions of users. Or they are enterprise apps that are custom-built for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But there isn’t really any equivalent of home-made software — apps made lovingly by you for your friends and family. Apps that aren’t polished or flashy, but are made to your preference and help you with your particular needs.

We’re John and Pontus, and we’ve been exploring the potential of home-made software together.

We ended up creating a research prototype that we call Scrappy — a tool for making scrappy apps for just you and your friends. First and foremost, we aim to contribute a vision of what home-made software could be like. We want to make this vision as concrete as we can, by sharing a working tool and examples of apps made in it. Scrappy, in its current state, is a prototype, not a robust tool, but we hope it paints the picture we carry in our heads — of software as something that can be creative, personal, expressive. Made by anyone, for themselves and their loved ones."

"A pricing calculator for creator economy platforms."

...

"Introduction
The creator economy is all the rage, isn't it? There are so many platforms that allow creators to monetize their work, but it's hard to know which one is the best for you.

All of them have different feature sets and different pricing models. It can be confusing and annoying to price-shop — it feels like you need a math degree just to figure out the cost of building your business. That's why I built this widget: to help you compare the costs of different platforms. (I'm not saying you should make your decision solely on cost, but it's certainly important to consider!)

The calculator

Creator economy platform cost calculator

[form set to]
Subscription price (per month) 10
Number of paid subscribers 1000
Number of free subscribers 0

Service Cost (monthly USD)
Buttondown $29.00
Beehiiv $39.00
Substack $1000.00
Maven $1000.00
Ghost $19.00
WordPress $408.00
Patreon $800.00
Buy Me a Coffee $500.00
Ko-fi $6.00
Kit (fka ConvertKit) $101.00
Memberful $515.00
Gumroad $1000.00
Podia $33.00
Steady $1000.00
Hype $500.00
MemberSpace $500.00
Ream $1000.00
Discord $1000.00

How did you compile this data?
I went through the pricing pages of each of the above services and calculated the cost of each service for a hypothetical newsletter with various price points and subscriber counts. Frustratingly, some services make it difficult to get the exact formula for their pricing, but the above calculator is as accurate as humanly possible.

In addition, I tried to be as generous as possible to each service: if they offer multiple tiers of service, I used the cheapest tier; if they offer an annual discount, I used the annual discount; if they offer a free tier, I used the free tier.

Aren't I actually paying more than this?
Yes! Literally every single one of the above services processes payments through Stripe, which charges a flat fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. To my knowledge, there aren't any services that offer a cheaper rate than Stripe, so I've left it out of the calculations since it's a constant across all services.

One exception to this is Discord, which doesn't pass through the raw Stripe fee but charges (in addition to the 10% platform fee) a 6% processing fee. This means they're taking a _little_ bit more on all payments of $10 or above and a _little_ bit less on payments below $10.

These numbers seem awfully self-serving.
I agree! Obviously I am biased: I built this tool to show that many people are paying a lot more money than they need to for managing their paid subscriptions, and are better off with a cheaper solution. It just so happens that Buttondown is a particularly affordable solution (though I will point out not the cheapest!)

You have a bug — regardless of what numbers I put in, KoFi only costs $6.
Not a bug. KoFi charges a flat $6 fee per month, regardless of how much volume you're running through them.

What about Liberapay? They're free, right?
Liberapay is terrific. They are not quite a creator economy platform, as they only support donations (meaning that transactions cannot be tied to a promise of recompense, such as exclusive content or access). However, if you're looking for a solution that lets you accept _donations_ from your readers, they're a great option.

What about [other provider]?
I'm happy to add more providers to this list! Please email me and I'll add them to the list.

Gee, it sure is awfully nice of you to compile this resource and keep it up to date. What can I ever do to thank you?
Tell your friends about Buttondown, the best way to add email subscriptions to your newsletter.

Changes over time
This tool is updated periodically with new pricing information. Here are the most recent changes:

December 26, 2024 — updated Ghost to reflect lower prices for newsletters with less than 1000 subscribers and Beehiiv to reflect their free tier for newsletters with no paid subscriptions
April 22, 2024 — updated Beehiiv to reflect their shift to usage-based pricing"

Experimental Publishing Compendium: Practice: Annotating

"Description
Annotations, notes scribbled in the margins or digitally overlain, spin out from a source text, adding layers of meaning, interpretations, references, and associations. As an experimental practice, annotating has the potential to redefine the lines between writers and readers, sources and exegesis, and reviewers and reviewees.

Full description
Web-based annotations of digital books enrich and add meaning to a scholarly text through overlays and filters that sit on top of the text—often allowing direct referencing of granular elements (specific words, segments, paragraphs)—in order to show additional textual or multimodal commentary and feedback. Annotations—in short, a form of readerly or writerly interaction that consists of notes (in any medium) added to texts (of any medium)—already have a long history in a print and manuscript context (e.g. marginalia, errata, rubrics), but the immediacy of two-way discussion between users is a notable feature of digital open annotations. Annotation can serve many purposes, "it can provide information, share commentary, spark conversation, express power, and also aid learning" (Kalir and Garcia, 2021). Adding contextual references, such as metadata, can enrich the underlying text, for example by creating a semantic network that sets a given publication in relation to other publications (hyperlinking, linked open data). This can facilitate a more "seamless integration of research materials and scholarly analysis" (McPherson, 2010). Beyond human generated annotations, there are also opportunities to enhance content through auto-generated annotations, adding info about identifiers, controlled vocabulary, or recommendations. Annotations can also be enhanced themselves, by making them "searchable by tags that make it possible to identify the type of annotation or its content" (Bertino & Staines, 2019; Lange, 2020) and because of digital technologies readers are now able to export, share, and preserve their annotations for a range of audiences.

Experimental uses
While pre-digital annotation has mostly been a private practice (Humphreys et al., 2018), digital tools enable the ongoing and shared open annotation of texts, potentially blurring divisions between text and annotation, and author, editor, reviewer, and reader. This speaks of the participatory approach to annotating content and annotations potential to undermine traditional notions of proprietary authorship and authorial control over open content. Annotation also provides opportunity to "socialize the process of knowledge creation" by extending the "collaborative spirit" from authorship out to review and revision, and from there to create knowledge communities (Montgomery et al., 2018; Kalir & Garcia, 2021). Open annotation can thus simultaneously foreground social processes of authorship while also questioning the very nature of authorial authority. It has the ability to enrich a document through its ability to 'interweave' itself with the other voices in a project, thus presenting a textured, multi-perspective publication in one document while also posing questions about where the document actually begins and ends (Adema, 2018). Annotation therefore points to a level of liquidity and intertextuality within a publication that disrupts what it means to have a fixed and final publication.

Increasingly publishers are experimenting with annotation features either on top of their open book collections or on specific open titles, and annotations (either in the authoring or the reading environment) are also becoming a standard feature of long-form experimental publishing platforms, from CommentPress to Manifold, Scalar, and PubPub. MIT Press has accommodated annotation and conversation around some of the books in its MIT Press Open collection. This includes books in its Works in Progress programme released on the PubPub platform for pre- or post-publication feedback, designed for works in early stages of their development that could benefit from community feedback to further develop ideas. Titles include Open Knowledge Institutions, a book co-authored by 13 scholars as part of a 'Book Sprint', but the press has also released books for formal assessment via their Community Review programme, including the manuscripts for Data Feminisms and Annotation that were posted for public comment prior to entering the publication process.

Open Humanities Press have been exploring the affordances of annotation as part of their focus on the rewriting of books in their back catalogue. With their Combinatorial Books: Gathering Flowers book series, they are encouraging readers/writers to actively reuse existing open access books. They have developed a publishing workflow that enables the creation of new combinatorial books out of existing OHP books that are openly licensed for reuse. For the first book in this series the authors collaboratively annotated OHP’s The Chernobyl Herbarium online PDF with the aid of the hypothes.is plugin. Tagging and grouping their annotations the authors developed a tentative table of contents for their book-length rewriting, which they further worked out in pads and other collaborative writing environments. The published book will use the PubPub annotation function to link back again to the sections in The Chernobyl Herbarium it responds to. In this sense open annotation has the potential to enable more engagement with existing open books and to promote conversation across scholarly monographs (Bertino & Staines, 2019).

Considerations
One important consideration is the power relations that determine who can and does write annotations and who can’t and doesn't (who gets to annotate), "is bound by social norms, cultural practices, and enforced policies", which need to be heeded when we think about how we can cultivate participation and interaction around texts, especially within a scholarly communications context (Kalir and Garcia, 2021). This might explain why, notwithstanding several trials in the humanities, annotation as a form of public discourse has not been a resounding success. The culture of academia might be to blame here, with "fears about being ‘scooped’, about blowback, about domineering commenters, and lack of time coalesce to result in extremely poor participation in this emerging form of discourse" (Skains, 2020. Time, effort, and accessibility become barriers to participation in this form of academic engagement, especially as annotations usually cannot be cited, meaning that in the scholarly reward and reputation system "they offer no verifiable benefit to the contributor in either cultural capital or actual capital" (Skains, 2020; Perkel, 2015). At the same time, books themselves are perhaps not the best "platforms for interaction" because there is already ubiquitous social media on which publications are shared and discussions around them take place (next to already established print-based environments dedicated to discussing research, e.g., conferences and book reviews). Why would scholars duplicate that effort for specific platforms or on specific publications with more restricted audiences, with limited visibility, and with no benefit to their standing or career (Faulkes, 2014; Skains, 2020)?

You’ll get a live Google Sheets spreadsheet of all your meeting actions. Action Cat listens to your conversation. Say “remind me…” and see it update.

The spreadsheet link appears once you admit the bot to your call. (Copy and paste the link into chat so others can see. The doc is public by default. Lock it down if you’d prefer they request access.) The full transcript is updated with minimal lag on the second tab, timestamped and broken down by speaker. Transcription is magically good.

🚧 Use Chrome on a desktop for now. Safari needs pop-up windows set to “Allow” for sign-in to work, and this isn't mobile friendly yet. 🚧

The main tab of the output spreadsheet showing a user-configuration tag 'remind me' and lines from the transcript containing that tag.
You can hack the way the bot works live on the call. Change the “remind me” phrase to pick up actions using a different keyword. Edit the formulas.

e.g. at the end of your call, search for “?” on the whole transcript to make sure all your questions have been answered. Check who has spoken most. Or least. Or =ANYTHING() else. It’s just a spreadsheet. Edit the wiring of the whole thing. Build a smart speaker for virtual meetings and call out to GPT-3, whatever. The document is yours. Tell us how you use it.

The transcript tab of the output spreadsheet, showing a list of speaker names and lines of speech.A calculation tab of the output spreadsheet, showing that metrics (here called 'trophies') can be calculated.

"But I’ve found the one for me, at least for now. It’s Readwise Reader, which works on iOS, Android, and the web. It’s still technically in beta but is already totally indispensable in my life and workflow. Here’s a few reasons why:

Reader can handle everything. You can save articles, upload books, add videos, import RSS feeds, subscribe to newsletters, and more. The app does a really good job of sorting things into the right places, so you’re not just stuck with a giant mass of stuff. But it can parse, store, and organize practically anything of any file type, and I love it for that.

It’s more than just a queue. The first thing I loved about Reader was the homescreen, which shows you categories like “quick reads,” “long reads,” and “recently added.” There’s also a Digest feature that just grabs a bunch of stuff you’ve saved and tells you to read it today. I try to get through my digest every day, and so I’m actually reading stuff I saved more than ever.

It’s also kind of a note-taking app. Readwise’s original shtick was to compile all your notes and highlights from places like Kindle and Pocket into a searchable, reviewable archive. With Reader, I can highlight anything I upload, or any live webpage altogether, and everything goes into that same notes archive — all of which can sync to Notion, Obsidian, or other note-taking apps, too. All my reading, and all my notes, now live in the same place.

You can… read… video. I watch a lot of YouTube, for, uh, journalism. Reader adds a (good but not perfect) transcript to every video you save, so you can highlight and take notes just like on an article. Everything gets time-stamped, too, so you can find it later. It’s so helpful.

It’s super fast. One reason I’ve stopped using Reader in the past is that the app was kind of sluggish. One of those apps that always felt like it was working, you know what I mean? But recently it has been slimmed down and sped up, and now it feels pretty zippy — except when it’s loading the AI voice to read an article aloud, which takes forever, but I don’t care for that feature much anyway."]

It allows users to experience how regulatory terms play in colonialism by offering two types of legal documents: Terms of Services and historical colonial treaties.

By selecting one of each document, a parallel reading platform is enabled, in which you can comparatively label, highlight and analyse a range of specific terms. This helps you to analyse how these documents operate in similar ways to colonialism, and it also opens up discussions in finding a colonial resemblance by mapping out the whole contractual landscape of terms used in each document.

The platform is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, so we invited two of Are.na's co-founders to talk to us about the close-knit (and often paying) community that makes the site vibrant and how the platform's systems of Blocks and Channels makes it an ideal tool for connecting ideas and creating trains of thought.

Charles Broskoski is a practicing artist and Are.na's CEO and Daniel Pianetti is a designer and the COO of Are.na.

Replace Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud with these better alternatives! - YouTube

"00:00 Intro
01:44 Nextcloud: self hosted and open source
03:53 Syncthing: just FOSS file sync
05:17 Proton Drive: if you already use Proton mail
06:46 Cozy Cloud: French Connection
08:13 pCloud: competitive prices with encryption
09:28 MEGA: massive encrypted storage
10:54 Zoho: all in one workspace
12:24 And more...

Nextcloud file storage is pretty powerful. It handles folders, you can favorite files and folders to get back to them easily, you can tag anything you like, you can share anything either with selected people, or with a public link, you can even add comments to any file, and it supports versioning as well to restore older versions if you want.

On top of that, you can also mount that storage as webdav, in any good file manager. On Linux, with GNOME and KDE, this happens automatically when you configure a nextcloud account in the online accounts settings.

And of course, you have a desktop client that lets you sync files either from a Nextcloud folder, or even from outside that folder, to make sure your files are where you want them.

Syncthing isn't exactly cloud storage, it doesn't store files on a cloud server, it just syncs them from one computer to the other, in real time. So you setup syncthing on your laptop and your desktop, and it will send files back and forth between both devices, without any intermediary in between.

If you're already a ProtonMail customer, you might just want to look at Proton Drive.

It's an end to end encrypted solution, hosted in Switzerland, with relatively strong privacy laws, that don't really matter since everything is encrypted anyways, it's not like someone could look at what you stored, since files are encrypted on your device before being sent to the cloud.

It's also open source, and it obviously integrates well with the other Proton tools, like Mail or Calendar. Even though it's encrypted, you can still share files with others without file size limits, as well as password protect files, define expiration dates for links, and more.

Another open source alternative is Cozy Cloud. It's available for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, and it gives you 5GB for free, with additional tiers at 50Gigs for 2 euros 99 per month, and 1TB for 9 euros 98. Still more expensive than Google, but also more private.

It also has auto import features from your phone camera roll to your drive, and can also automatically import certain documents from more than 100 providers, like your bills, health refunds, bank statements, and more, if you want.

pCloud is an option I used extensively in the past for all my cloud storage. It's not open source, but it has optional encryption features if you want to make sure that you're the only one that can look at your stuff. They're on the affordable side, with 500Gigs costing you 50 euros per year, or about 4 euros per month, and 2 terabytes for 100 euros a year, or a bit more than 8 euros per month.

If what you need is massive storage space and you don't want to self host, then I think Mega is your only option. Their base plans are more expensive than others, at 5 euros per month for 400 Gigs, but they can go up to 16Tb for 30 euros per month, which is a LOT of storage for not that much money, considering. The 2TB plan is on par with other options, at 10 euros per month.

And I can't conclude this video without mentioning Zoho. If you don't really care all that much about privacy or open source, but you still want to ditch big tech, then Zoho is probably your best bet. they have replacements for EVERYTHING google does, and a lot more on top of that, and prices are relatively inexpensive."

"Amazon's Send to Kindle service has support for EPUB files, however, for historical reasons, it still assumes ISO-8859-1 encoding if no encoding is specified. This creates malformed formatting errors for special characters. It is also pretty strict when it comes to EPUB format validation.

This tool will try to fix your EPUB to be able to use with Send to Kindle. It currently tries to fix these problems:

* Fix UTF-8 encoding problem by adding UTF-8 declaration if no encoding is specified
* Fix hyperlink problem (result in Amazon rejecting the EPUB) when NCX table of content link to
with ID hash.
* Detect invalid and/or missing language tag in metadata, and prompt user to select new language.
* Remove stray tags with no source field.

Privacy: The book is processed locally in your browser. We do not upload your file anywhere.

Warning: This tool come at no warranty. Please still keep your original EPUB. We do not guarantee that the resulting file will be valid EPUB file, but it should."

"Rotting Research was created as a result of a dissertation about the effects of link rot on scholarly publications. It began as a command-line tool called Linkrot, which still powers the backend of this project. Now, Rotting Research is a growing web app that allows users to upload PDFs and receive a report on the links contained within. The report includes the number of links, the links that are still valid, as well as various commonly-used persistent links.

The mission of Rotting Research is to help researchers and scholars check their publications for symptoms of link rot and educate them on ways to mitigate the problem."

write text in the "Write" tab, left

it will be nested under the node you were writing in
you can drag and drop nodes to reorder them
hit the [x] to delete a node, and the [+] to make a new node
be careful! if the node you're deleting has nested nodes, it will delete them too

changes are saved (you can leave this page and come back to your work later)
but to be safe, you should probably work in a separate document
preview text in the "View" tag, center
you can interact with it here, and collapse and expand details
grab your code out of the "Code" tab, right
you can put this code on any website that supports html!
there are a few options for indentation - or style it further with css!

"Ever feel like the Internet has gotten a bit... I don't know, samey? There's funny images scrolling by and you blow some air through your nose and keep scrolling and then someone has done something upsetting and you write an angry comment and then you scroll some more.

Remember when used to explore the Internet, when you used to discover cool little websites made by people and it wasn't just a bunch of low effort content mill listicles and blog spam?

I want to show you that that Internet you used to go exploring is still very much there. There are still tons of small personal websites, and a wealth of long form text from both the past and the present.

So it's a search engine. It's perhaps not the greatest at finding what you already knew was there, instead it is designed to help you find some things you didn't even know you were looking for.

If you are looking for facts you can trust, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, you're on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?

I don't expect this will be the next "big" search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.

Warning: Experimental software!

This is an experimental toy, and you should expect downtime, data losses, bugs, jank of every flavor. I sadly don't have enough hardware to keep a back-up system running when I take down the server to make alterations. I try not to do this too frivolously, but expect a few minutes of downtime every now and then.

A Theoretical Justification

In recent years, something has been simmering: Some call it the "Small Internet". I hesitate to call it a movement, that would imply a level of organization and intent that it does not possess. It's a disjointed group of like-minded people that recognize that the Internet has lost a certain je ne sais quoi, it has turned from a wild and creative space, into more of shopping mall. Where ever you go, you're prodded to subscribe to newsletters, to like and comment, to buy stuff.

The formulation of the problem differs from purely aesthetic ones, to ones based on political doctrine. I prefer a humanist explanation. The measure of a website should be how well it enriches the life of – and empowers the visitor, rather how well it enriches the wallet of the website owner, especially not at the expense of the visitor's long-term interests.

Some would vilify search engines and commercial interests for transforming the Internet in such a way, but that is not a particularly productive thing to dwell upon. Even if that is so, that's just all the more opportunity to build something that's better.

-

The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.

This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they aren't sufficiently search engine optimized.

This may seem a choice from some sort of nostalgia, which in part is true, but there is more to it. The hypothesis is something akin to the Lindy-effect: If a webpage has been around for a long time, then odds are it has fundamental redeeming quality that has motivated keeping it around all for that time. Looking at design elements is one way of determining the approximate age of a webpage, and thus predict its usefulness.

The purpose of the tool is primarily to help you find and navigate the non-commercial parts of the internet. Where, for sure, you'll find crack-pots, communists, libertarians, anarchists, strange religious cults, snake oil peddlers, really strong opinions. Yes all manner of strange people.

You'll surely find uncomfortable ideas too, and voices from the past that stubbornly refuse to adapt to the present, but I'm sure you'll survive and find the experience worthwhile, because for every turd you step in, there are also plenty of brilliant and interesting gems to find that for one reason or another didn't live up to the standards of the big search engines.

There's also a point to be made about how the technologies we use shape our view of the world. I'm hoping, by holding up this kaleidoscope to the Internet, you'll become more aware of the spectacles you were already wearing without thinking about them. It really does seem like a different reality.

If this were the looking glass through which you viewed the the Internet, and I'm not making a serious suggestion that it should be, but if it were, then wouldn't you agree that your idea of the web would by seem be very different, more human?

The are.na app and website It’s sort of like Tumblr, but more organized; you create different channels, and then you upload blocks with photos, videos, links to articles, PDFs, anything. I don’t know if the good people at are.na would object to this, but the easiest way to describe it is actually as a kind of Pinterest for ideas. I follow channels where people compile readings about subjects I’m interested in, or images that follow a certain theme. Then I use it to organize ideas for things I’m writing. It’s very calming to use."
