https://everythingchanges.us/blog/look-to-your-neighbors/
robertogrecoWe’ve come through 75 years where having neighbors was essentially optional: if you had a credit card, you could get everything you needed to survive dropped off at your front door. But the next 75 years aren’t going to be like that; we’re going to need to return to the basic human experience of relying on the people around you.
This has been on my mind as I talk to folks who are contemplating a change in their work, and wondering about a related question: where should I work? Most people can name a few places where they know enough about the ground conditions to dismiss it as a possibility—places that are too hot or too toxic or where the risk of floods and storms is far too high. But then I watch as they scan all the other locales and contemplate if any of them are safe, or see their face fall as they imagine how to evaluate the relative safety of one place over another.
We’ve all either lived long enough to experience more than one unsafe workplace, or else we’ve heard the stories from our elders. Even the seemingly healthy places aren’t immutable, aren’t immune to the rigors of capitalism and investor brain worms. You might find that the flexible, friendly atmosphere evaporates the moment the c-suite sees clouds in the market. You might show up one day to discover that your boss has been replaced by three interest rates in a trench coat mumbling about declining productivity. You might find that you are the boss reading from a script about severance while your soul scrambles to exit your body. (I know, because I’ve been there.) You might suddenly realize that the product you were eager to work on is actually doing more harm than good, or that the fundraisers are using your org to launder filthy reputations. You might despair when you realize that the path to changing things for the better is guarded by a coterie of demons cloaked as financial instruments.
I’m inclined to agree with McKibben: no place is safe.
And yet. We can return to the basic human experience of relying on the people around us. We can get to know our neighbors and colleagues and users; we can orient our work and our lives towards them and away from the inhuman and unliving systems that want us to behave like machines. We may not be able to stop a storm from coming, but we can get together to line up sandbags and buckets, to organize mutual aid, to create places for people to talk and share their needs, to laugh and cry and howl at each clap of thunder. We may not be able to stop a layoff or exorcise the CFO but we can sure as hell take care of each other.
This is where I’m wont to say you deserve a union, and that’s true. But even more than that, you deserve to be fully human, interdependent with the people around you and the more-than-human world. The greatest lie that capitalism ever told was that risk is a solitary affair. But we can never bear the risks of work (or climate change) on our own, because we have never actually been alone.
What I’ve learned, over and over in my own work and with the people I work with, is that the only thing that saves us from uncertain and capricious futures is each other. This is not to say that you shouldn’t contemplate where you want to work, any less than you should consider where you want to live. It is to say that with whom is the more important question. It is to say that asking how do you want to be? may be the trick that gets you past the demons at the head of the path. Those demons are expecting you to show up head bowed and alone, because alone they know how to deter you. But just watch what happens when you show up with a crowd."]]>mandybrown 2024 billmckibben belonging unions humanism humans community mutualaid workplace safety neighbors neighborliness climatechange globalwarming uncertainty interconnected interconnectednesshttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:5e46a8ea25f4/Anarchism in America (1983) - Documentary on the American Anarchy Movement. - YouTube2023-12-14T18:32:36+00:00

robertogreco“The conditions for survival are necessary but not sufficient to ensure justice; people can survive in prison. The conditions for the just distribution of industrial outputs are necessary, but not sufficient to promote convivial production. People can be equally enslaved by their tools … A postindustrial society must and can be so constructed that no one person’s ability to express him- or herself in work will require as a condition the enforced labor or the enforced learning or the enforced consumption of another.”
There’s a three-tiered framework here that will have a Janus function at this juncture in the essay. Illich argues that what he calls a convivial society—which we can think of simply as a distinctly Illichian way of speaking about a good society—involves not only equal access to commodities, however broadly we conceive of them, but something more. This “something more,” as we see in the paragraph just quoted, Illich ties very close to work, work that is free, creative, and meaningful. In this regard, Illich recalls Simone Weil, who, though approaching the matter from her own deeply religious perspective, believed that “all the problems of technology and economy should be formulated functionally by conceiving of the best possible condition for the worker.”
It would be worth exploring how Weil and Illich each conceive of work as a condition of human flourishing (that work may already have been done, if so I’m presently unaware of it), but it enough for my purposes here to note that they both understand that a good society would furnish its citizens with more than just a steady stream of endless diversions.”
…
“Perhaps another more contemporary example can help clarify Borgmann’s distinctions as I understand them. We can imagine a society, without a great deal of effort, in which the elderly routinely find themselves isolated, lonely, and lacking a sense of purpose—in a word, uprooted in Weil’s sense. This society has developed robots and digital devices to care for the elderly and to keep them company. In a formally just society, all elderly citizens have the right to procure these consumer goods. In a substantively just society, all elderly citizens can afford to procure these goods or else they are supplied by the state.”
…
“I’ve assembled the work of these three writers because it seems to me that they are all circling around a similar set of concerns about human needs, work, technology, justice, and the good life. Their reflections make clear that these are interlocking realities, which must be considered together. They direct our attention to a more fundamental level of analysis, which we do well to take up. And they all saw the dangers of ordering society around technologically automated production and consumption and of uprooting human beings to enhance both.
I’ve argued before in this newsletter and elsewhere that one of the salient features of digital culture is the rapid collapse of the ideals of neutrality and disinterested objectivity that have been central to the legitimacy of modern liberal institutions. While this collapse will continue to be attended by varying degrees of turmoil and conflict, it may also provide us with an opportunity to examine more carefully some of the assumptions that have informed the way we think about the nature of a good life. And I would suggest that we do well to start, as Simone Weil did, with a consideration of the full range of human needs, clarified by Ivan Illich’s searching critique of the needs engendered in us by industrial (and now digital) institutions, and oriented toward a more robust vision of a good society as Albert Borgmann urged us to imagine.”

robertogreco‘Freedom’ & ‘democracy’, two words that like many others have lost much of their meaning due to Orwellian doublespeak, intellectual dishonesty or just plain confusion. Their meanings have been so degraded, that it is difficult, if not impossible, to discuss them effectively. 1/11
If a decision only affects you with no effect on anyone else, then only you should have a say (maximize freedom).
But if a decision affects others, then they too should have a say (maximize democracy). How much of a say? A say proportional to the degree they are affected. 3/20
The corollary is that those who aren’t affected shouldn’t have any say in that decision.
When people have a say in decisions that don’t affect them or if they have more say than is proportional to the degree they are affected, they prevent others from having their fair say. 4/20
#AnarchismIs nested decision-making counsels that embody these ideals. If a decision only affects you, only you get a say. If a decision only affects your family, only your family has a say. If a decision only affects your neighborhood, only your neighborhood has a say, etc. 5/20
In many Anarchist economic traditions such as Anarcho-Syndicalism or newer anarchist frameworks like Participatory Economics, nested participatory democratic workers’ councils embody these ideals. 6/20
For example, if a decision only affects one worker and no one else is affected: like if a worker wants to have a picture of a loved one on their desk, they can make that decision unilaterally. 7/20
If, however, a decision affects a particular department, then that department can make that decision.
But, if a decision affects an entire workplace, then all workers in the workplace should have a say. 8/20
Anarchist Participatory Budgeting models throughout the world also embody these ideals. They seek to give people a direct & fair say in government spending. They allow neighborhoods & communities to engage in matters of public budgeting to the degree they are affected. 9/20
#AnarchismIs the end of alienation in the workplace by engaging workers with real participatory & democratic say in the decisions that affect them at work. 10/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1212842818286211072 [or https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1212842818286211072.html ]
Neuroscience proves what we’ve suspected all along: The reason we hate our jobs is… capitalism.
Work, Alienation & Fulfillment, Thread 1/23
In the political sphere, anarchism seeks these same ideals.
Give real decision-making power to those who are affected: nested participatory democratic bodies: from neighborhoods & communities to cities and beyond. 11/20
#AnarchismIs the end of alienation in the political sphere.
Giving people a fair & participatory say in the decisions that affect them not only ensures decisions are made in our best interest (which is reason enough) but also increases fulfillment. 12/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1129054856470192128
Based on our understanding of human nature, consciousness includes the cognitive ability to weigh options & make decisions for ourselves. Having a say in decisions that affect our lives is a source of fulfillment. Conversely, being removed from those decisions leads to alienation
In addition to maximizing freedom & democratic self-determination, #AnarchismIs equitable societal relationships. That means the benefits & burdens of all our societal relationships should be equitably distributed. 13/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1146165768356270086 [or https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1146165768356270086.html]
What’s fair is fair. But what exactly IS fair? (thread)
For those of us working for a more fair & just world, sometimes it makes sense to take a moment & define exactly what we mean by ‘fair’. 1/
In other words, if the lion’s share of the benefit of any relationship goes to one person/group/class while the lion’s share of the burden falls on another person/group/class, that relationship is inequitable.
#AnarchismIs equitable relationships. 14/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1223376621895323648 [or https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1223375405295386624.html ]
Humans have an innate conception of fairness & justice. When the benefits & burdens of our relationships are inequitable, meaning the lion’s share of the benefit goes to one party while the lion’s share of the burden to another, we feel injustice. 7/11 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1146165768356270086
What’s fair is fair. But what exactly IS fair? (thread)
For those of us working for a more fair & just world, sometimes it makes sense to take a moment & define exactly what we mean by ‘fair’. 1/
In my opinion, one of the greatest insights of Anarchism is that by focusing on power & equity dynamics of relationships, it is not inherently econo-centric or politi-centric.
#AnarchismIs the overthrow *all* unjust power, *regardless* of the sphere of society. 15/20
Freedom, democracy & equity apply everywhere:
#AnarchismIs feminist ideals in the kinship sphere.
#AnarchismIs anti-racist ideals in the community sphere.
#AnarchismIs socialist ideals in the economic sphere.
#AnarchismIs participatory democratic ideals in the political. 16/20
Anarchist ideals even translate to healthy & loving personal relationships. 17/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1244682169265483777
Love is fair. Love is equitable.
The benefits & burdens of loving relationships are equitably distributed.
Love is not the bulk of the benefits to one, while the bulk of the burdens to another. 3/19
Ultimately, #AnarchismIs a world where everyone has a fair say in the decisions that affect their lives & societal relationships are equitable…
A world where the goal is not profit & exploitation maximization, bur rather human fulfillment & potential maximization. 18/20
Anarchism simultaneously puts faith in humanity by giving people control over their lives, while at the same time protecting against the corrupting effect of power by not giving anyone more power than their fair say. 19/20 https://twitter.com/ArashKolahi/status/1144014695952576512 [or https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1144014695952576512.html ]
“Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely” (thread)
Few maxims seem to so consistently & accurately describe a human condition as this does. But why? What insights do neuroscience & cognitive science provide in describing why power so thoroughly corrupts us? 1/16
The contributions from a long history of Anarchist thought & philosophy are more relevant than ever before.
As we seek a new vision of a better world, these insights will help ensure our next system is truly liberating, equitable & fulfilling.
