"I used to read a book a day as a child. Spent as much time in the library after school as I could add a teenager. I read loads of stories, eventually. But the first books I really wanted to read were dictionaries, craft books and non fiction. https://www.vivianeschwarz.co.uk/the-best-place-in-the-world/

The first story books I was interested in reading were the ones that had recipes, instructions, maps worked in. Things I recognised as "information", things I felt I could "get out" of the book, apply to reality.
‪
Story books I loved as a child: A book about cowboy who made up a new bit of song about every adventure, musical notation at the back so one could sing it.
A book that featured a machine and there was a blueprint of it included.
An adventure book with instructions for getting out of a locked room
‪
Yes, I also appreciated good writing, but first of all I loved stories that gave me something I could think about applying to my own world quite literally. Some of those were from free little magazines you'd get at the shoe shop or pharmacy. That was my way in.
‪
And the most amazing books were illustrated non fiction on a theme. THE MICROSCOPE was probably my favourite, with hand rendered bacteria and cell structures that were as beautiful as the real thing, more beautiful than photographs. Instructions for slide-making that involved razor blades and ink
‪
And all those dinosaurs. Is there a more complete love than one may feel as a child reading an illustrated book about dinosaurs, loving every bone of them, cherishing every minute of their lives, accepting their fossilized giant bird shits and even their very departure with fierce love.
‪
And don't forget the instruction manuals for board games. The IKEA leaflets describing in detail the angular blossoming of furniture. Do not tell me those joys of reading are lesser than opening a classic children's book one is given without curiosity demanding it right then.
‪
There must be substrate for curiosity to grow from where it's at to where it may go.

Telling a child that what they're reading is worthless won't encourage them to pick up your favourite kind of thing instead."

Lastly, I’ve been asked about alternative ways of contributing to this movement besides doing cleanups. I hope to answer all these questions to the best of my ability.

"I started thinking about making an electronic wristwatch after designing and making a series of synchronous digital microsecond timers for my visual effects business. Those designs had, over several iterations, become a kind of Swiss army knife of electronic chronograph functions that I could mine for wristwatch features and miniaturize in an ASIC. However, as I started thinking about wristwatch design in a historical context I couldn't help but find myself drawn to the history of mechanical watches. Here in Switzerland, where I live, that history resonates in the most beautiful ways one can imagine.

As my passion for the history of timekeeping grew, making a digital wristwatch lost its appeal. I also realized that there was no better way for me to study that history than to study traditional watchmaking -- and vice versa. The mechanics of vintage watches can appear impenetrable or boring without an appreciation of who made them, how they were made and when. That history can likewise seem boring without an appreciation of the intricate details of how they function. While that might sound like a double-whammy of boring it's actually insanely exciting when you start connecting the two to each other and to the tides of cultural, religious, technological, and political change that horology was born of and evolved within.

To give just one example: Abraham-Louis Breguet, born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 1747, made dozens of contributions to mechanical watchmaking that are still in use today. How is that possible? Was Breguet such a genius that no one in the past three centuries has been able to match him, even given the head start of not having to reinvent his inventions? Did he discover fundamental mechanical designs that can't be improved upon in the same way that the fundamentals of math can't be improved upon? Or is it simply that few have dared to discard his designs in favor of modern alternatives lest they should be branded heretics for dishonoring his place in history? Breguet's clients included Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte and many others, making him fantastically wealthy. When, because of his wealth, he was marked for execution himself during the French revolution he fled, like any self-respecting Swiss would, from Paris to London and made timepieces for King George III. As a result he kept his head for another thirty years and took his clock and watchmaking to even greater heights.

From the opposite angle, how many other geniuses made significant contributions to the art of watchmaking that no one noticed but themselves? Or conversely, how many bad ideas were implemented and appeared over the centuries and then disappeared as their instigators or others caught them and replaced them with better solutions in subsequent designs? Both of those numbers are enormous. Each one of those improvements and mistakes is fascinating, and almost every watch ever made contains examples of both.

The mechanical engineering in watches is both a language and a code: a language in the sense that there is beauty and history in their form and structure and a code in the sense that the proper functioning of the mechanical division, multiplication and display of time is determined by inalterable principals of physics. Watches are both functional and aesthetic because they must both keep time and evoke the passion of their wearer: you.

Will I actually design and make a complete mechanical wristwatch of my own someday? Who knows? But I do know that I will be measuring every step I take towards doing so against hundreds of years of history. And knowing that makes every moment that I spend researching and reflecting on that history exhilarating."

"To write a memoir, cultivate the habit of listening to yourself."

...

"My husband, Rich, lost his memory after he was hit by a car and suffered traumatic brain injury. In a moment of perfect clarity, he once described his loss like this: “Pretend you are walking up the street with your friend. You are looking in windows. But right behind you is a man with a huge paint roller filled with white paint and he is painting over everywhere you’ve been, erasing everything. He erases your friend. You don’t even remember his name.” It’s terrifying. Because who are we without five minutes ago? Who are we without our stories?

Recently I went to a conference given by the Brain Injury Association of New York State, and I sat in on a talk by the director of a traumatic-brain-injury rehab facility. She said the first thing they do to assist a person who has experienced a loss, not just of memory but of self, is to make a story. With the help of family and friends, they write a story of the patient’s life—the events, names, and faces.

It is basic, our need for story, perhaps because it is such a handy way to carry our experiences around—story as container, so to speak. What was Rich carrying? He stared for a long time at a photograph of himself, his brother, and an old friend, taken maybe 65 years ago. I don’t know what went through his mind. Perhaps he wasn’t thinking; perhaps he was absorbing. There are notebooks he wrote a few things in when he first got hurt, trying to figure things out, things that made no sense to him. It’s what I do, too.

Writing is the way I ground myself, what keeps me sane. Writing is the way I try to make sense of my life, try to find meaning in accident, reasons why what happens happens—even though I know that why is a distraction, and meaning you have to cobble together yourself.

Sometimes just holding a pen in my hand and writing milk butter eggs sugar calms me. Truth is what I’m ultimately after—truth or clarity. I think truth’s what we’re all after, although I’d never have said such a thing when I was young. Writing memoir is a way to figure out who you used to be and how you got to be who you are.

There are as many different kinds of memoir as there are motives for writing one. There is memoir written as pure story: you start at the beginning and end where you are now, a breathless headlong rush through what happened.

Or you can start at the end and look back, or with some middle moment, an event that precipitated change and clarity, or the need for clarity. Put the point of your compass there, and start circling. Ilene Beckerman has written a perfect memoir called Love, Loss, and What I Wore (Algonquin Books), an account of her life illustrated by what she was wearing at important moments. I believe someone else has fashioned a memoir composed entirely of lists.

The jumping-off place isn’t always obvious. You can’t always find the way in. Sometimes you need a side door. That’s where writing exercises come in. Here’s the one I give all my students the first week of class:

Take any ten years of your life and reduce them to two pages. Every sentence has to be three words long—not two, not four, but three words long.

You discover there’s nowhere to hide in three-word sentences. (“Walk by river. Stare at emptiness. Demons still around.”) You also discover that you can’t include everything, but half of writing is deciding what to leave out.

Learning what to leave out is not the same thing as putting in only what’s important. Sometimes it’s what you’re not saying that gives a piece its shape. And it’s surprising what people include. Marriage, divorce, love, sex—yes, there’s all of that, but often what takes up precious space is sleeping on grass, or an ancient memory of blue Popsicle juice running down your sticky chin.

When you have those two pages, run your mind over everything the way a safecracker turns the tumblers with sandpapered fingers to feel the clicks. If there is one sentence that hums, or gives off sparks, you’ve hit the jackpot.

Write another two pages starting right there.

A lot of writing consists of waiting around for the aquarium to settle so you can see the fish. Walking around muttering seems to hasten the process. Taking public transportation nowhere helps. Looking out the bus window lets the back of your mind move forward. Don’t listen to anything but natural sound. Don’t look at anything you have to turn on. This is about the pleasure of silence. This is not meditating; this is reacquainting yourself with yourself. Something interesting might enter your head if you let it alone.

Write two pages of uninspiring diary entries (to break the ice).

When I began writing Safekeeping—which is, for lack of a better word, a sort of memoir—I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I couldn’t stop. What were these little pieces I was feverishly scribbling? They had started coming a few weeks after an old friend had died, a man I’d been married to once upon a time, someone I’d known half my life. The pages piled up. Memories, moments, scenes, nothing longer than a few pages, some only a line or two. There was no narrative flow. There was no narrative at all. But these bits and pieces kept flying out of me, and I kept writing them down. I didn’t know if what I was doing would amount to anything, but I never cross-examine the muse. The only thing I was sure of was that I would stop with my friend’s death. Grief had been the catalyst; grief would be the end.

My editor turned it down. She wanted me to write a novel about that marriage. But life doesn’t arrange itself conveniently into chapters—not mine, anyway. And I wanted it to feel like the way I’ve lived my life.

Write two pages about the moment you knew something was over.

Write two pages that end with “You can’t get away from it.”

Write two pages of something that makes you laugh every time.

Is there one image or object that appears over and over in your memories? I don’t know what baked Indian pudding is doing alongside certain terrible moments, but I know that stirring at the stove is a meditative activity for me. My mind can go elsewhere, off its leash, while I stir the spoon round and round making circles, ellipses, parabolas, keeping the stuff smooth, keeping it moving so as not to burn the bottom. Adding more butter when nobody is looking.

Write two pages about the softest thing.

Write two pages about where you would fly if you could.

Sometimes all you have to do is open a jar. The smell of Noxzema takes me back to the summer of 1957 and the front seat of the old Hudson my boyfriend drove, and how we parked at the Amagansett beach at night and made out like crazy. Afterward I was afraid I was pregnant, even though we didn’t do anything but kiss. The fear and the pleasure is fresh to me every time I smell the stuff, and I keep a jar around so I can remember being young.

Write an ode to a part of your body.

Write two pages about your treasures.

Be sure to include what you can’t make fit neatly into your idea of yourself, or whatever it is that ruffles the smooth surface of your life story. Suppose at some point your mother told you that you had a half sister who was ten years older than you. Suppose you once discovered love letters in your father’s raincoat pocket, and never asked questions. So where does this stuff go? It doesn’t fit anywhere. To which I say, well, what is the anywhere where this doesn’t fit?

Write two pages about something you wish you didn’t know.

Write two pages about something you regret revealing.

Memoir is not a place to get revenge or to appear angelic or to cast oneself as victim. If that’s on your mind, write fiction. Memoir should not be self-serving, even accidentally. If you come out as anything but profoundly human, you’ve probably got the wrong motives for your writing or you haven’t stood far enough back, or come close enough.

If you do the exercises, you are going to have a larder full of material. If there is a common thread, follow it. If you return again and again to a specific time or place, set up a tent there. If you remain plagued by the question of who is going to find it interesting, please remember that most of us are curious about other people’s lives. My rule of thumb is that if you find something interesting, chances are good that it is interesting.

After all, we are full of contradiction and conflict; we have evolved out of many different selves. We have been thanked, we have been humiliated, we have gossiped and worried and gone to bed hungry for one thing or another. We have gone out on a limb, and we have stayed on the porch.

As I said earlier, writing memoir is one way to explore how you became the person you are. It’s the story of how you got here from there.

Believe me. It’s a good story.

21 More Ways to Start Writing

I give assignments in my writing classes because it’s hard to make something up out of the clear blue sky. Two pages is all I ask, and it doesn’t have to be a story. It doesn’t have to be an anything. I have learned we do better when we’re not trying too hard—there is nothing more deadening to creativity than the grim determination to write.

1. Write two pages of apologies.
2. Write two pages of instructions to the child you once were.
3. Write two pages in which something is broken.
4. Write two pages about an unwelcome surprise.
5. Write two pages about a jinx.
6. Write two pages in which something is too small.
7. Write two pages about a proposal of marriage.
8. Write two pages in which you do something wrong you do not regret.
9. Write two pages about an untrainable animal.
10. Write two pages that take place in the woods.
11. Write two pages in which you were unmasked.
12. Write two pages about scolding a child.
13. Write two pages about sitting in someone’s lap.
14. Write two pages on being too cold.
15. Write two pages on a tantrum you regret.
16. Write two pages on taking your time.
17. Write two pages about a bad haircut.
18. Write two pages in which someone kills something by accident.
19. Write two pages that end “I could go on and on.”
20. Write two pages in which a child comforts an adult.
21. Write two pages on what you can’t remember. My father, Lewis Thomas, began his memoir, The Youngest Science, “I have always had a bad memory; as far back as I can remember. It’s not that I forget things outright; I forget where I put them. I need props.”"

"this is a 1996 guide on how to help someone use a computer. it’s strikingly resonant with ‘how to be a parent’, or really ‘how to help anyone with anything’. a nice example of “the universal within the particular”"

"Phil Agre
http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/pagre/

Computer people are fine human beings, but they do a lot of harm in the ways they "help" other people with their computer problems. Now that we're trying to get everyone online, I thought it might be helpful to write down everything I've been taught about helping people use computers.
First you have to tell yourself some things:

Nobody is born knowing this stuff.

You've forgotten what it's like to be a beginner.

If it's not obvious to them, it's not obvious.

A computer is a means to an end. The person you're helping probably cares mostly about the end. This is reasonable.

Their knowledge of the computer is grounded in what they can do and see -- "when I do this, it does that". They need to develop a deeper understanding, but this can only happen slowly -- and not through abstract theory but through the real, concrete situations they encounter in their work.

Beginners face a language problem: they can't ask questions because they don't know what the words mean, they can't know what the words mean until they can successfully use the system, and they can't successfully use the system because they can't ask questions.

You are the voice of authority. Your words can wound.

Computers often present their users with textual messages, but the users often don't read them.

By the time they ask you for help, they've probably tried several things. As a result, their computer might be in a strange state. This is natural.

They might be afraid that you're going to blame them for the problem.

The best way to learn is through apprenticeship -- that is, by doing some real task together with someone who has a different set of skills.

Your primary goal is not to solve their problem. Your primary goal is to help them become one notch more capable of solving their problem on their own. So it's okay if they take notes.

Most user interfaces are terrible. When people make mistakes it's usually the fault of the interface. You've forgotten how many ways you've learned to adapt to bad interfaces.

Knowledge lives in communities, not individuals. A computer user who's part of a community of computer users will have an easier time than one who isn't.

Having convinced yourself of these things, you are more likely to follow some important rules:
Don't take the keyboard. Let them do all the typing, even if it's slower that way, and even if you have to point them to every key they need to type. That's the only way they're going to learn from the interaction.

Find out what they're really trying to do. Is there another way to go about it?

Maybe they can't tell you what they've done or what happened. In this case you can ask them what they are trying to do and say, "Show me how you do that".

Attend to the symbolism of the interaction. Try to squat down so your eyes are just below the level of theirs. When they're looking at the computer, look at the computer. When they're looking at you, look back at them.

When they do something wrong, don't say "no" or "that's wrong". They'll often respond by doing something else that's wrong. Instead, just tell them what to do and why.

Try not to ask yes-or-no questions. Nobody wants to look foolish, so their answer is likely to be a guess. "Did you attach to the file server?" will get you less information than "What did you do after you turned the computer on?".

Explain your thinking. Don't make it mysterious. If something is true, show them how they can see it's true. When you don't know, say "I don't know". When you're guessing, say "let's try ... because ...". Resist the temptation to appear all-knowing. Help them learn to think the problem through.

Be aware of how abstract your language is. "Get into the editor" is abstract and "press this key" is concrete. Don't say anything unless you intend for them to understand it. Keep adjusting your language downward towards concrete units until they start to get it, then slowly adjust back up towards greater abstraction so long as they're following you. When formulating a take-home lesson ("when it does this and that, you should try such-and-such"), check once again that you're using language of the right degree of abstraction for this user right now.

Tell them to really read the messages, such as errors, that the computer generates.

Whenever they start to blame themselves, respond by blaming the computer. Then keep on blaming the computer, no matter how many times it takes, in a calm, authoritative tone of voice. If you need to show off, show off your ability to criticize bad design. When they get nailed by a false assumption about the computer's behavior, tell them their assumption was reasonable. Tell *yourself* that it was reasonable.

Take a long-term view. Who do users in this community get help from? If you focus on building that person's skills, the skills will diffuse to everyone else.

Never do something for someone that they are capable of doing for themselves.

Don't say "it's in the manual". (You knew that.)

This video illustrates the correct way to remove the old battery without damaging the watch circuit board which is paper thin and easily damaged.

Also, it illustrates that you can easily break the coil and points out where the coil is on this watch movement.

It then goes on to illustrate how to reset the calendar information so that it retains it's memory. This involves shorting certain contacts with the positive side of the battery in order to set the Leap Year, The month and the day.

Care must be taken when changing the battery on a seiko perpetual calendar as it is very easy to damage the paper thin circuit board - and the circuit is very costly to replace."

"An open hardware reading device that's easy to build, easy to manufacture, and easy to make your own."

...

"This is a complete reimagining of the Open Book Project, but the original mission remains:

As a society, we need an open source device for reading. Books are among the most important documents of our culture, yet the most popular and widespread devices we have for reading are closed objects, operating as small moving parts in a set of giant closed platforms whose owners' interests are not always aligned with readers'.

The Open Book aims to be a simple device that anyone can build for themselves. The Open Book should be comprehensible: the reader should be able to look at it and understand, at least in broad strokes, how it works. It should be extensible, so that a reader with different needs can write code and add accessories that make the book work for them. It should be global, supporting readers of books in all the languages of the world. Most of all, it should be open, so that anyone can take this design as a starting point and use it to build a better book.
DETAILS
This is an open hardware e-book reader designed around the ESP32-S3. It grew out of an old design for a Feather-oriented board that I designed before the pandemic. With the benefit of four years learning the ins and outs of design, manufacturing and community development, I designed this new version over the summer specifically to submit for the Hackaday Prize.

The Open Book stakes out an alternate vision for developing personal computing devices, using the humble e-book reader as its ideological canvas:

- It posits that technology should be understood by the user, not act like a black box.
- It posits that technology should serve the user, not the platform owner that created the technology.
- It posits that technology should be extensible, offering expansion points for accessibility features that make it work for differently abled users.
- It posits that technology should aim to support users around the globe as equals, supporting all the world’s languages by default instead of leaving some behind.
- Most of all, it posits technology as a thing that you make out in the open, not a thing that you buy that is closed.

To that end, the Open Book embraces a radically open design, outlining the functional groups of parts on printed circuit board in the same way they're grouped on the schematic. It prints a list of pin functions on the board itself, opening the device up to being hacked on and extended. It offers two analog-capable GPIO pins and an I²C bus using common, standard connectors. And it supports the entire Unicode basic multilingual plane, ensuring that readers of books in all the world's languages will find a home in the Open Book.

Moreover its focus on affordability and design for manufacturability make this a piece of hardware that could be built by anyone, either in a makerspace with basic soldering tools or in the context of a small manufacturing line. The open source enclosure is 3D printable on a basic FDM printer; the open source board design can be fabricated by just about any PCB house, and the parts are large enough to be pick and placeable by hand or with an open source pick and place machine.

The Open Book's community has, over the course of years, enthusiastically embraced previous iterations of the Open Book: building and sharing alternative enclosure designs, forking the firmware to add functionality, and even helping each other to source circuit boards and trade parts so that they could build their own devices.

I believe that I can turn this version of the Open Book into an open hardware product that continues to fulfill the promise of the Open Book while putting this vision and this object into the hands of a larger community of readers."

Like the previous mods that you may have seen me do, this is based on the Casio F91W, and that's down to the fact that it's THE standard for an inexpensive digital watch, striking a good balance between price, features, build quality, and worldwide availability.

The Data Runner name is a nod to the movie Johnny Mnemonic because of the storage features."

With the omnipresence of electronic devices nowadays, mechanical watches are easily magnetized, which usually causes a watch to run exceedingly fast. This is why knowing how to check for magnetism and how to degauss a watch is essential to watch enthusiasts, and is a frequently performed procedure in watch repair.

"Some time ago I bought a replacement motherboard for my classic Casio F-91W from Crowd Supply. The project keeps the original Casio LCD but replaces the entire motherboard with a modern microcontroller and open firmware. The combination gives you long battery life but lots of new functionality in a classic case.

Here's my Casio before working on it. Next to it is the new motherboard and the tiny sensor module which has a thermometer on it. With it the Casio can show the current temperature. It's separate because the watch is intended to be hackable by allowing anyone to create a pluggable sensor module."

It was a nasty bug and the only way forward was to figure out a way to get your Chromebooks wiped and reverted to the previous version. While this is an easy enough task most times, this particular bug made the process troublesome enough that even some veteran Chromebook users were reaching out for help on how to get their device back to a usable state again. It was after one of these help sessions that we decided a how-to video was in order to help."

mask on — anti surveillance protest guide

“SELECT SCENARIO:
I’m going to a protest.
I’m at a protest.
I’m returning from a protest.”

“Surveillance means being monitored, tracked, and watched so that the watcher can gather information on the person being watched.

Mask On Zone was created to serve as an anti-surveillance toolkit for the expanding resistance to white inferiority and the carceral state; and to protect them after returning home and when talking about uprisings. As abolitionists, we know that the police and prisons rely on oppressive surveillance regimes to sustain their brutality and harm. These forms of surveillance specifically target Black activists fighting for liberation.

Our purpose is to:
* Inform people on what to consider before, during and after protesting,
* Build political education around anti-surveillance and digital safety,
* Create a hub for anti-surveillance resources and tips in simple plain text that can be easily digested

We seek to develop a practice of anti-surveillance which finds necessary and creative ways to subvert the surveillance state. As we fight for a new world, we also must make political demands that promote trust, solidarity, mutual aid, and collective forms of living, that render surveillance obsolete.

It is important to note, this work is built upon the wonderful work of others that you can find the resource page. We have tried our best to make the information as clear and concise as possible. The best thing to do when going through this content is to assess your risk, nothing is perfect!”

Tactical Free Radio

"With uprisings taking over the streets of cities and towns, effective communication for protesters and dissenters is critical. Internet tech like Signal is good for secure communication between groups, but don’t scale to tens of thousands. PAs and loudspeakers are used on site at protests to provide information and encourage unity, but can be difficult to hear clearly in crowds, even a short distance from speakers.

Free radio is a powerful tool that can supplement existing communications to provide instantaneous information and advisories across a wide area, inexpensively. Anything that might be communicated over a PA can be sent over an FM signal a greater distance with greater clarity. While the signal itself is not secure, it is also untagged – listeners cannot be identified.

For these reasons, there is a long history of protest movements using free radio. These stations were instrumental at the 1999 WTO protests and the anti-globalization protests that followed in the 2000s. Even though cell phones were available, smartphones and mobile internet were not. And, then as now, local cell networks can become saturated with traffic or tampered with by authorities.

Even recently free radio was used in car protests in the Bay Area since loudspeakers can’t reach thousands of vehicles and most cars are still equipped with pretty good FM radios.

Though the rise of mobile networks has replaced broadcast radio for many, the irony is that powerful FM transmitters have become cheaper and easier to obtain than ever before. A quick order on Ebay or Amazon can get a mobile-ready transmitter into your hands in days, whereas in 2000 you likely had to either build a kit or order a bespoke transmitter from overseas that might take weeks to arrive."

This guide is written with non-developers in mind, so it doesn’t require you to code, but we will be copying and pasting some code. If you are a developer you may want to check out the GitHub repo. https://github.com/nicolehe/sms-bot

When people text your bot, it will ask a series of questions that you define, and then save their answers in your spreadsheet.”
