Tech Billionaires Want Us Dead - YouTube

"Tech billionaires are planning for a future where humans don’t exist, and they’re already building it.

For decades, tech elites have sold us a shiny future powered by artificial intelligence. But what if the future they’re building doesn’t include us?

I investigated the dangerous worldview known as TESCREALism that has taken hold across the world’s most powerful tech companies, from OpenAI to Tesla. It’s the belief that biological humans are flawed and temporary, and that a post-human future dominated by AGI (artificial general intelligence) is both inevitable and desirable.

Under this ideology, human obsolescence is framed as progress, while billionaires like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and Mark Zuckerberg prepare to outlive the collapse they are helping to create.

KEY CONCEPTS: From the Singularity to billionaire bunkers, TESCREAL ideology is the invisible force driving the AI arms race.

TESCREAL: Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, Accelerationism, Longtermism.

Special thanks to Dr. Émile P. Torres for his extensive research on this topic. Follow Dr. Torres: https://x.com/xriskology "

You’re paying their wage so we don’t have to.” There’s some debate as to whether the claims are as bad as the OP makes them seem, but it seems like there’s general agreement that the gist of the post is legit. Which company do you think this is about?

The Quiet Erosion of Us - Short Stack

"On Losing the People-ness of a Place"

...

"Community doesn’t disappear all at once.

It fades the way old paint does. First, the bright flakes go, then the undertones, until one day you look up and realize you’re staring at a color that no longer remembers what it used to be. And that’s when the question finally crystallizes with enough weight to ask aloud:

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Where did the community go in my community?

I don’t mean the municipality. Municipalities can keep right on existing long after the people inside them stop knowing one another. I don’t even mean the familiar slogans about “supporting local businesses” and “loving where you live,” as if community were something you could conjure with a well-designed flyer. I mean the real thing; the people-doing-life-together thing; the stumble-upon-your-neighbor thing; the “Hey, since you’re here…” thing. The thing every human creature was made for long before zoning laws and borough councils existed.

When I say “community,” I mean the connective tissue of a place. And Beaver County, where I’ve lived all my life, once had a lot of that tissue. Strong cords of it. Not perfect, not idyllic, not Rockwellian, but unmistakably human.

So where did it go?

Like everything significant, the answer is slow, layered, and feels a bit like grief.

Those who remember the mills running, B&W, J&L, Crucible…and the constellation of shops that orbited them…don’t romanticize the heat or the danger or the shift work. But they do remember something undeniably communal: a town that had a center of gravity. A place where men knew one another because they had to depend on one another. A place where quitting time spilled people into the streets and diners and bowling alleys…not back into isolated pockets of climate-controlled boredom.

When those mills closed, something sturdier than steel quietly gave way. The economy changed, yes. But the deeper casualty was an erosion of encounter. Fewer reasons to gather. Fewer occasions to overlap. Fewer causes that bound our ordinary lives into something shared.

Factories didn’t create community, people did.

But the factories provided the occasion for that community to thicken, for acquaintances to mature into friendships, and for friendships to become something like belonging.

Now, in the absences left behind, the question isn’t whether the past was better. It’s whether the present is still capable of giving birth to the kind of humanity we actually need.

The slow vanishing of community might have stopped there, plateaued, leveled, if not for the Great Enemy of Togetherness: Convenience.

Convenience, as we currently experience it, is not merely a feature of modern life. It has become a habitat, a worldview, a reflex. It promises frictionless living, but the truth is that friction is how humans connect. People are like stones in a riverbed: it’s the rubbing, the bumping, the awkwardness, the proximity that smooths us, shapes us, prepares us for life in the real world.

But now?

We’ve learned to sand off the edges of ordinary human experience until we barely touch each other at all.

DoorDash can bring us dinner.

Amazon can bring us the world.

Streaming can bring us entertainment custom-fitted to our narrowest preferences.

And our gas stations, once places you actually had to go inside, now offer touchscreen burritos because the last thing we need is a conversation with the teenager behind the counter.

We used to have slogans like “You deserve a break today—so get up and get away.”

Today the spirit of the age has updated it to something like, “Sit still. We’ll come to you. Don’t trouble yourself with humanity.”

The old commercials invited us out.

The new ones coax us inward - endlessly.

It isn’t that DoorDash or Amazon are evil. It’s that they train us into habits where we stop needing each other. And once we stop needing each other, we forget how to know each other. Which is to say: we forget how to be human in the vocational sense of the word.

Oddly enough, we still love the aesthetics of community.

We adore the annual festivals, the parade routes, the Christmas lights strung across town squares. We post nostalgic photos of Main Street, gather our kids for the tree lighting, and tell ourselves that the place still hums with the energy it used to.

But look closer.

We love the look of tradition without the labor of it. We enjoy the scenery of community without the inconvenience of stepping into it. And why? Because somewhere deep down, we have begun to treat communal life like a performance…something put on for us to enjoy, not something we must help create.

We want the trappings of belonging without the obligations of belonging.

It’s all very American, very modern, and very lonely.

Community is not magic; it’s muscle.

It forms when people bump into each other often enough that they stop being strangers. It forms when someone has to wait in line behind you, or when you share the same pew for twenty-five years, or when you buy the same cup of coffee from the same person who remembers (and possibly judges) your order.

It forms when you can’t curate your way out of the mundane, because the mundane is where the kingdom of God most often hides.

But in a world where we curate everything - our playlists, our feeds, our shopping carts, our meals - we have slowly curated ourselves out of the presence of others.

We are losing the liturgy of proximity.

Theologians sometimes talk about God as Emmanuel, God with us, as if nearness were not just a divine attribute but a divine strategy. Jesus came not as a concept but a body. Not as a delivery service but a presence. Not as a product but a person.

Real community always follows this pattern: show up, stay a while, belong.

And we’re forgetting how.

Beaver County is just the test case I know best.

I’ve lived in its towns, taught in its schools, shopped in its stores, watched its families succeed and fail, celebrated its small-town victories, and mourned its quiet losses.

But what’s happening here is happening everywhere.

Ask folks in Montana.

Ask folks in Tennessee.

Ask folks in the suburbs of Chicago or the rural edges of Maine.

Ask them if they know the people who live three doors down. Ask if they’ve had dinner with neighbors this year. Ask if they’ve built a life with the people around them or a lifestyle that replaces them.

The warning is this:

A community that no longer practices being a community will eventually forget how.

The critique is this:

We have outsourced the ordinary acts of neighborliness to algorithms, gig apps, and convenience industries whose only interest in us is our purchasing predictability. They will not build towns for us. They will not build belonging for us. They will not build love for us. They cannot.

And the call is this:

We have to practice being people again.

Nothing dramatic. Nothing heroic. Nothing that deserves a plaque or ribbon cutting. Just simple, old-fashioned nearness.

Go out.

Buy your coffee in person.

Pick up your own dinner.

Try strolling instead of scrolling.

Attend the school play even if you don’t have a kid in it.

Go to the game.

Walk downtown.

Say, “Hello.”

Learn a name.

Stay long enough for something unscheduled to happen.

Because community isn’t built on events; it’s built on habits.

And habits are built on small decisions that say, “I will live here with these people, not beside them.”

The truth is, we don’t need the old days back.

We need the old disciplines back.

At the heart of all this is something simple and sacred:

people are meant to be known. We are meant to be threaded into the lives of others, to belong to a place, to be recognized by name, to have our stories intertwined with the stories around us.

A convenience economy can give us everything but that.

But a community…rebuilt slowly, stubbornly, faithfully…can give us the one thing no app can:

a sense that we are part of something larger, older, and more beautiful than ourselves.

And that’s worth walking out the front door for."

The Emperor’s New Grocer

"New York’s hottest status symbol is a grocery store selling nothing."

...

"Andrea Hernández, creator of the popular Substack Snaxshot—aptly dubbed by The New York Times the Nostradamus of snacking—has another name for stores like Erewhon: Hypebeast grocers. “It doesn’t seem like there’s enough in the store to make sense.” Hernández tells me, “There’s a difference between selling gourmet items versus selling the hype around the grocery store itself. Erewhon is the Supreme of grocery stores. The $30 smoothie I must try… They create an aura of scarcity.” The phenomenon is international. In Seoul, Monday Morning Market drops groceries like capsule collections.

In stark relief, Hernández describes our parents’ buying habits. They went to the store, and then got out. The big choice in the cereal aisle would be buying a private label (ShopRite’s own) over a name brand (Barilla) for the sake of affordability and value. Then, “Along comes our generation, growing up with social media and inheriting the behaviors of affordable affluence. It’s the lipstick effect.” You may not be able to afford a Birkin, but you can go and try a $20 strawberry at Erewhon and post about it in the same way. Whether you eat the berry at all, actually, doesn’t matter.

How many people can really afford to do a full shop at one of these stores? In 2023 New York Magazine ran a sobering profile about the Angelinos going into debt to afford their Erewhon habit—people fixated both on the potential wellness benefits and the potential upward mobility Erewhon has to offer. Hernández remarks, “It’s depressing to think that this is the way that we are able to kind of have that same dopamine hit of keeping up with the Joneses, but it’s like, what’s in your grocery cart?”

After the development of the first self-service grocery store Piggly Wiggly in 1916, packaging began to take on a more and more significant role in how we eat. There was an attempt to make products you might otherwise pass up in a grocery aisle more attractive. Now, with the advent of social media, branding, aesthetic intrigue, and hype are everything. “It’s the Trojan-horsing of aesthetics, the yass-ification of everything. Like, why does a can of beans have to look like that?” says Hernández. As she points out, Happier Grocery even offers transparent bags with the logo—like a walking display case for your carefully selected nut milks and pre-washed salad.

The issue, Hernández feels, is that we’ve “shaped grocery stores in our clout-chasing image.” She explains, “We’re the apex consumers, and we’re treating grocery stores like luxury stores. Everything around us has to signal something because of social media.” Nussdorf, however, is skeptical of how Erewhon and its direct competitors’ clout chasing will translate to a New York audience: “I don’t think these smoothies with these influencers or designers in New York City that some of these other competitors are doing is making them that much money.”

These “HypeMarts” have more shared DNA with Balenciaga or Telfar than they do with a Whole Foods, relying on scarcity, drops, and branding for business. Beyond acting like clothing brands, these grocery stores also have their own clothing brands. Hernández tells me, “Happier grocery sells $120 jackets. Erewhon has been dropping, like, merch capsules.” Happier Grocer was created by a former Marc Jacobs designer and is owned by the same team that runs the W.S.A. building in FiDi and S.A.A. in Bushwick—two fashion hot spots—and the luxurious Cayman Heights hotel Palm Heights. Flamingo Estate, a popular lifestyle brand that sells a $80 jar of dried strawberries, has the tagline “Mother Nature is the last great luxury house.”"

...

"Culturally, as our grocery stores have trended sparer, so too have our bodies. For the past two years, publications across the world have published, repetitively and without satisfaction, about whether being ultra thin was “back.” According to CNN, as of 2024 1-in-8 American adults has taken Ozempic or another GLP-1. For Hernández these grocery stores represent the final evolution of consumerism: When you see groceries not as a necessity but as luxury good. “It’s fucking dystopian as hell at a time where you have food inaccessibility, and people are having to DoorDash or eat Taco Bell because it’s cheaper than going to the grocery store. In Austin, there’s a store that’s opening soon with underground delivery because it’s cheaper and doesn’t have any overhead costs.” The brand (can we even call it a store?) is called Goods and advertises two-minute grocery delivery via “underground delivery” sent to a pickup lane near you. Hernández speculates, “Maybe we are going to start getting more groceries from underground tunnels, and then only if you can afford it, you’re gonna go have that luxury experience of going to an actual grocery store.” If that all sounds like a pipe dream, then it’s worth noting that when Erewhon debuts a new product, they often set up a selfie station with vegetables as the photo backdrop. Hernández, who grew up shopping at local markets in Honduras, turns somber: “We cannot unlearn convenience. We’re basically cosplaying being able to connect with what nurtures us.”"

In this episode, Kevin and D Scott talk to Tim Redmond, editor of the 48 Hills and former executive editor of the Bay Guardian. We get into Tim’s reporting on the recall of San Francisco supervisor Joel Engardio and his thoughts on Engardio’s replacement. We also talk about how real estate speculation destroyed the city and the state of local legacy media. Really good stuff!

"Why your next car should be an electric cargo bike
Cargo bikes are rewiring cities to adapt their infrastructure for more human-centric transportation. And they’re also really fun to ride. Plus: bike bus!"
https://www.theverge.com/transportation/781908/electric-cargo-bike-car-replace-bike-bus

"A couple of years ago, I helped start a bike bus in my suburban town in North Jersey. The pandemic was still raging, and we were all looking for ways to get our kids out of the house and on to their bikes so they could get a little physical activity before school.

One of the things that helped me get the bike bus started was an electric cargo bike. At the time, my kids were too small to ride the two-and-a-half miles to our school by themselves, so the cargo bike — a first-gen Flyer L885 with a rear-hub motor and a plethora of fun accessories (now renamed the Flyer Via Pro) — was an elegant solution to this problem. Now, three years later, they can ride their own bikes, but I still find myself using my cargo bike to lead our growing bike bus pack every Friday. And it’s replaced my car anytime I need to run a local errand. It’s my “daily driver.”

Ever since the pandemic, electric bike sales in the US have been on a rocket ship trajectory. They are the fastest growing bike category for the past several years, according to recent statistics. And while there was some concern that the e-bike boom would fade post pandemic, or that tariffs and trade wars would put a dent in them, sales have held strong. It looks increasingly likely that electric bikes are here to stay.

E-bikes tend to stir up a lot of passion — They’re too fast! Teens are riding them unsafely! Bike lanes are already too crowded! What about faulty batteries? — but their utility is unquestionable. Owners talk a lot about using their e-bikes in unique and creative ways. But the best use for an e-bike is to replace a car trip. And the data suggests that e-bike owners are doing exactly that.

The best type of e-bike for replacing car trips is the cargo bike. Sturdy, capable, and often able to haul lots of cargo or even multiple humans, electric cargo bikes are rewiring cities to adapt their infrastructure for more human-centric transportation. Parents are using them to take their kids to school, businesses for last-mile delivery, seniors to improve their mobility, and cities to replace traditional car- and truck-based services, like snow plows and garbage pickup. We’re even starting to see electric cargo bike share programs emerge as a solution for anyone who can’t afford one of their own.

And perhaps the most joyful application, cargo bikes are playing a central role in the global movement to encourage more kids to ride their bikes to school. These bike buses that are springing up in cities and towns across the world are exposing more people to the joys of electric cargo bikes as well as the need for better infrastructure, slower speed limits, and communities that are oriented around the smallest and most vulnerable among us.

There’s still a long way to go before electric bikes, and cargo bikes in particular, are seen as legitimate forms of transportation in the US. Europe has made a lot more progress in that regard. Cities need to build safer systems, like protected bike lanes and convenient bike parking, to encourage more people to ride. And that requires taking space away from cars, which is a politically fraught proposal. Governments need to ensure their citizens are protected from faulty batteries that have been known to catch fire. And drivers and cyclists alike need to give each other a little bit of grace and make room for new people in the community — especially children — so everyone feels welcome, included, and valued.

Cargo bikes won’t solve every problem we have. But they can certainly help make our communities more livable."]

Our work, Tumbleweed diaspore, has been included in ‘By the Means at Hand’, Vlatka Horvat’s project for the Croatian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

"Engaging with the theme of Adriano Pedrosa’s main exhibition for La Biennale di Venezia, Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, the project exists as an accumulative exhibition of artworks by a wide-ranging group of international artists living “as foreigners,” reflecting on questions and urgencies of the diasporic experience."

[image: "Croatian pavilion Biennale di Venezia 2024"]

The package travelled with us for nearly a month – from Belgium via Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy – until we hand-delivered it to the lovely people at Fabbrica 33 in Canareggio at the end of May.

"The title of the project – By the Means at Hand – refers to the improvised transport systems whereby individuals activate informal networks of friends, acquaintances, and even strangers to deliver letters, parcels, documents, money, and other material goods to family members and others who live in cities or countries far away. While such practices are born out of social dispersal, migration, and displacement, the networks they give rise to build effectively on wider principles of solidarity, shared struggle, mutual support, and friendship – factors that the project emphasizes as prerequisites for co-existing with others, and as key elements in the toolkit for those living “in foreign lands.”

By the Means at Hand also points to a wide range of broader themes such as alternative logistics, the spontaneous production of social relations, informal and gift economies, and the idea of trustfulness. On a subtler, yet crucial, infrastructural level, the project takes off from a recognition of the state of emergency when it comes to the climate crisis, and the substantial environmental footprint of institutionalized modes of production, transportation, and presentation of contemporary art. The project’s improvisatory system of delivering artworks to and from Venice forgoes the formal transport system, using instead journeys that are happening anyway."

It's time to replace urban delivery vans - YouTube

"E-bikes are cleaner, and safer. So why aren’t we using them?

Remember during lockdown, how we all got obsessed with ordering everything online and having it delivered right to our doorsteps? Yeah, turns out that isn’t going away anytime soon, and we’re starting to understand the many downsides. The delivery vans that make our next-day shipping dreams come true are driving up C02 emissions while making our streets more crowded and less safe.

Fortunately, there’s a hero waiting in the wings: the e-cargo bike. Not only can these bad boys deliver packages in urban environments just as quickly (and sometimes faster) than delivery vans, they take up far less space and are much less likely to cause pedestrian deaths. Companies like Amazon, DHL, and UPS are using them in several European cities, but American cities haven’t followed suit.

In this video, we explore why that is, and lay out some of the big steps American cities would need to take to join the e-bike delivery revolution."

“Okay, I’ve been with USPS for several years now, so here’s my big dumb #SaveThePostOffice thread. I don’t know how many tweets it’s gonna take for me to ramble through my thoughts, so stick with me. Or don’t, whatever.

First things first: we’re not taxpayer funded. At all. Sure, we get government monopolies on certain things of value (and things like cheap loan terms), but the budget isn’t by the taxpayer. It’s by the services provided. If you buy stamps, you fund us. If you don’t, you don’t.

Second: our financial issues, while not ENTIRELY from the 2006 PAEA bill that required 70 years of retiree prefunds, are mostly artificial. They would not exist if not for a congressional lame duck bill passed mostly by a certain political party on their way out the power door

Third: We’re in the constitution. Literally. You know that thing you occasionally pretend to love when it serves your interests? It’s explicitly in there. We’re legally required to exist.
Hatch Act Violator

Fourth: Certain nameless people want us privatized because we’re worth a lot of $. Even without the physical materials (truck fleet, offices, computer networks, etc), we have billions in proprietary data (route sequences, mailing lists, logistics, etc) that businesses would love

Fifth: You can be certain, if given the chance, certain politicians would love to GIVE AWAY this infrastructure, a la the $70 billion in digital broadcast licenses they gave away for free to Telecom companies in 1996 with no strings attached.

So, why should you not want this? Well, for starters, if you’re not in a major city, you’ve been subsidized by one via the post office for decades. It’s a lot cheaper to mail and deliver in dense population centers. But we charge the same in rural Delaware, too.

Why? Because the idea is everyone in America, no matter where they are, should have the same, guaranteed access to a valuable line of communication. A birthday card from across country is as valuable as a wedding invite from one town over.

Now, no one likes their junk mail, but you know what? Carrying 4 Geico ads and a Subway coupon in my satchel with your card is the reason the latter only cost $0.50 to cross the country. And if you’d like to name a cheaper way to ship a book or a record, I’d like to hear it.

But the one thing I pride myself on the most in terms of service is something you can guarantee won’t happen in privatized, for-profit model. UPS, FedEx, Amazon, DHL, etc ALL dump pacakages on our docks every single day. Ones they say aren’t profitable. We take them the last mile

Why? Because Every. Single. Address. In. America. deserves service. Even places accessible by only boat and plane. They’ll be cut off in a second in a private market. Heck, it’s only because of our last mile service that you don’t realize the private sector already cut you out.

I work in a position called a “T6,” or a “Carrier Technician.” Put simply: USPS delivers 6 days a week, and employees work 5 days. For every 5 routes in an office, there’s a T6 to carry the 6th day on each of those 5 routes who have a regular the other 5 days. Full-time position

In my case, that’s 5 routes, averaging 700 addresses each, totaling 3,500 addresses, and approx 10K names and faces. Names and faces that I recognize, communicate with regularly, and can identify the forwarding information for, without even consulting a reference sheet.

I know which senior residents would like their mail delivered to the door, even if they have a curbside box. I know who needs their packages (often for home business) tucked into a corner behind the garage. Who is going to need an extra minute to get to the door to sign.

I know whose lawns to not cut across, whose dogs want to bite, and whose want to play. I know whose day will be made brighter with a short convo, and who wants me to go away. I know who is bad at checking the mail, and who to call for a wellness check on if it starts to pile up

For millions across the country, we’re the only face they often see all day, even before social distancing. Their connection to the world around them, even if it’s just for a comment on the weather, or to be a two minute ear for a rant about “kids these days.”

I’m not naive though. I know not every carrier lives up to the same standard the men and women of my office largely hold themselves to. I know many of our (admittedly fake financial) troubles have reduced quality of service. But the effort and integrity is there for so many of us

And the reason to bring this all up is to say that it’s all in jeopardy in a private market. There’s no profit to be had in uniform pricing or remote delivery locations. There’s no profit in being your community’s friendly face.

There’s no profit in me receiving dozens of incorrectly addressed pieces of mail every day, and spending the few extra minutes figuring out where on the route it’s actually supposed to go (you may not notice this, but it happens every day, and we fix it from memory).

These little details cost time and money. Things the private sector wants to cut, and that we’ve only been forced to do likewise with as political interests deliberately undermine our finances, waiting for a chance like this pandemic to auction us off.

If you want USPS to continue to provide a service that gives us the highest approval rating of every government agency, call you congressperson. Nag ’em for a bit on my behalf. Ask them for the same bailout for a community service that they give freely to banks and airlines.

Thanks for listening. I’ll see you on the streets, from 6 feet away. And keep your dog on a leash, please.

Addendum: I’ve decided to add a few thoughts for an even broader perspective. In addition to employing more than half a million people, USPS is one of the largest employers of both vets and people of color in the US. It has put, and kept, millions in the middle class for years

Not only does USPS tie communities together, but the organization has helped lift many of them up. Rather than talking about letting us die, you should be asking how to help strengthen us.

Postal banking, which would allow people in every community in the country to have easy access to cheap local banking, is not just a potential revenue stream, but a way to provide an essential service to the people most lacking them. And it doesn’t have to cost taxpayers a dime

The biggest handicaps we face on a daily basis: unreliable vehicles, overworked and undertrained staff, extreme turnover amongst non-career employees: it’s all artificial and can be improved by giving us the financial flexibility that was deliberately robbed from us.

We have the resolve as a nation, and the popular demand to fix USPS and permanently strengthen them. All you need to do is help advocate for it. Because none of us, especially those receiving stimulus checks by mail, want to see how bad things get after we are allowed to collapse

PS: If you’re reading this and want a much easier, more direct way to help us out? Volume is down right now by considerable amounts (our office is 50% lighter some days during COVID-19!). Go online, buy some stamps. Have them delivered. Write an old fashion card to a friend today

Heck, write a few! Toss em in your mailbox, and put the flag up. You don’t even need to leave the house except to the mailbox, and you can do a little something for the postal service. Encourage a friend to do the same. Who doesn’t like receiving a handwritten card?”

This thread will explain some of the reasons that is grossly and obviously wrong. https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1249032058493681664

White House rejects bailout for U.S. Postal Service battered by coronavirus

First, UPS and FedEx are not designed to deliver letters. Currently the lowest charge to send an envelope (e.g. a check) by FedEx is $11; for UPS, it’s $12.40. Both rates are for local delivery (for FedEx, within 150 miles, for UPS, in the same state). Prices go up from there.

Also, both UPS and FedEx already rely on the Post Office to complete deliveries for them. It’s not economical for them to deliver in more sparsely populated areas all over the country. So they work with the Post Office. Here’s FedEx and UPS to explain: [images]

There is no imaginable means by which FedEx and UPS could suddenly develop the capacity to replace the Post Office in the time frame we’re talking about. So effectively we’re talking about (at least temporarily, maybe permanently) creating mail deserts.

Also, due to the fact that UPS and FedEx simply don’t have the capacity to deal with anything like that volume of mail, even if you can get your letter or package to them and pay the $11 and upward, IT WILL SIT FOREVER. The whole mail system will temporarily collapse.

It will add a whole new area of chaos to an already chaotic economy. A LOT of businesses rely on the Post Office directly, and even more rely on the Post Office’s collaborations with UPS and FedEx. This is in addition to individuals who get drugs, checks, etc., in the mail.

I guess I thought there was some limit to how casually destructive the contemporary GOP could be, but even *threatening* to let the Post Office suddenly die in the middle of a massive economic crisis, with no plan to replace it … it’s beyond belief.

Oh wait, I almost forgot … the Post Office employs 600,000 people. 120,000 of those employees are VETERANS. The USPS is the second largest employer of veterans, after the Dept. of Defense.”

Which sounds extremely lucrative! TV makes a lot of money, and there’s a lot of excellent TV. But TV is also a byzantine nightmare of conflict and compromise and trash and waste and legacy. The prospect of Facebook, for example, as a primary host for news organizations, not just an outsized source of traffic, is depressing even if you like Facebook. A new generation of artists and creative people ceding the still-fresh dream of direct compensation and independence to mediated advertising arrangements with accidentally enormous middlemen apps that have no special interest in publishing beyond value extraction through advertising is the early internet utopian’s worst-case scenario."

"There are ways to have students get the full effect of other students’ work without a parade of PowerPoint presentations at the front of the room –

Read-arounds – where each group/person has to read the work of two other groups/people and write a response. Using a learning management system can make this process transparent for everyone as well.

Teach-in stations – where students go from station to station and at each station, students are presenting work and doing a poster-session style presentation. Do this in thirds where there are three rounds of poster session and each group presents once and walks around twice. You can have students fill out exit tickets of things they learned from other students’ presentations – again, if that’s done online, it can then create a shared compendium of student learning and reflection.

Critique / Gallery Walk- take a page from the art world, and have the work either digitally or physically available to all members, and have them go from piece to piece and give feedback. (Even digitally, this can be fun to do in physical space so that students can get up and move around.)

There are ways to make the front of the room more exciting too – and there will be times when you want every student / group to do a presentation to the entire class:

Ignite-style: A sense of urgency is an awesome thing, and the Ignite style presentation (20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds) makes for a fast-paced, fun presentation that communicates ideas powerfully with a sense of energy and purpose.

Multiple manifestation of presentations: Give students the options of how they want to present – skits, simulations, videos, even PowerPoint, poster – there are many ways to communicate ideas to a crowd, and students should have the opportunity to experiment with multiple modalities. Often, SLA teachers still have students hand in a more comprehensive paper with the presentation so students can go into more depth as well.

Mini-lessons: If one of the purposes of having students present their projects is to teach their classmates, then why not have students actually create a lesson plan on how to teach their material? Students can create more progressive lesson plans for how to teach their students about what they have learned, complete with creating learning activities for their fellow students.

These are just some of the many ways to make the presentations of student work far more powerful as learning moments than having students lecture their classmates. I’ve seen SLA teachers and students create incredible learning experiences for each other using these techniques and many more. Much like every other part of project-design and inquiry-driven curriculum-design, thoughtful planning of Presentation Day on the front end will make for far more powerful learning when the day arrives."

In the Sharing Economy, Workers Find Both Freedom and Uncertainty - NYTimes.com

"Piecemeal labor is hardly a new phenomenon. But as expedited by technology and packaged as apps, it has taken on a shinier veneer under new rubrics: the sharing economy, the peer economy, the collaborative economy, the gig economy.

Gigs hold out the prospect of self-management and variety, with workers taking on diverse assignments of their choice and carving out their own schedules. Rather than toiling at the behest of some faceless corporation, they work for their peers.

“Providers in the peer economy really value the independence and flexibility; for lots of people, it has been transformational,” says Shelby Clark, the founder of RelayRides, a car-sharing marketplace, “You meet great, interesting people. You have great stories.”

Certainly, it’s a good deal for consumers. Peer marketplaces democratize luxury services by making amateur chauffeurs, chefs and personal assistants available to perform occasional work once largely dominated by full-time professionals. Venture capital firms seem convinced.

Uber has raised more than $1.5 billion from investors; Lyft has raised $333 million; and TaskRabbit, $38 million. Part of the attraction for investors is that the companies can avoid huge employee payrolls by effectively functioning as labor brokers.

If these marketplaces are gaining traction with workers, labor economists say, it is because many people who can’t find stable employment feel compelled to take on ad hoc tasks. In July, 9.7 million Americans were unemployed, and an additional 7.5 million were working part-time jobs because they could not find full-time work, according to estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There are no definitive statistics on how many people work in the gig economy. But according to a report from MBO Partners, a company that provides consulting services to independent contractors, about 17.7 million Americans last year worked more than half time as independent contributors, among them project workers.

With piecemeal gigs easier to obtain than long-term employment, a new class of laborer, dependent on precarious work and wages, is emerging. In place of the “proletariat,” Guy Standing, a labor economist, calls them the “precariat.”"

…

"Technology has made online marketplaces possible, creating new opportunities to monetize labor and goods. But some economists say the short-term gig services may erode work compensation in the long term. Mr. Baker, of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, argues that online labor marketplaces are able to drive down costs for consumers by having it both ways: behaving as de facto employers without shouldering the actual cost burdens or liabilities of employing workers.

“In a weak labor market, there’s not much of a floor on what employers, or quasi employers, can get away with,” Mr. Baker contends. “It could be a big downward pressure on wages. It’s a bad story.”

Labor activists say gig enterprises may also end up disempowering workers, degrading their access to fair employment conditions.

“These are not jobs, jobs that have any future, jobs that have the possibility of upgrading; this is contingent, arbitrary work,” says Stanley Aronowitz, director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Technology and Work at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. “It might as well be called wage slavery in which all the cards are held, mediated by technology, by the employer, whether it is the intermediary company or the customer.”"

…

"Peer-economy experts and executives recognize that many gig workers are laboring largely without a safety net. Mr. Clark, the industry veteran who founded RelayRides, reels off a list of lacunas: health insurance, retirement saving plans, tax withholding and even the kind of camaraderie and mentoring that can be available in full-time office jobs.

“Looking at this as a new paradigm of employment, which I think it is, the question is, What are you giving up?” Mr. Clark says. “At the end of the day, there’s a metalayer of support services that is missing.”

He predicts that new businesses will soon arise to cater to the needs of project workers: “There are opportunities to focus on providers, finding ways to make it easier, more stable and less scary to earn in the peer economy.”

TaskRabbit has started offering its contractors access to discounted health insurance and accounting services. Lyft has formed a partnership with Freelancers Union, making its drivers eligible for the advocacy group’s health plan and other benefit programs.

That may not be enough. Dr. Standing, the labor economist, says workers need formal protections to address the power asymmetries inherent in contingent work. International rules, he says, could endow gig workers with basic entitlements — like the right to organize and the right to due process should companies seek to remove them from their platforms.

“There should be codes of good practice at an international level that all companies should be required to sign,” he said."

Amazon same-day delivery: How the e-commerce giant will destroy local retail. - Slate Magazine

"But now Amazon has a new game. Now that it has agreed to collect sales taxes, the company can legally set up warehouses right inside some of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. Why would it want to do that? Because Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately—as soon as a few hours after you hit Buy. (Disclosure: Slate participates in Amazon Associates, an "affiliate" advertising plan that rewards websites for sending customers to the online store. This means that if you click on an Amazon link from Slate—including a link in this story—and you end up buying something, Amazon will send Slate a percentage of your final purchase price.) It’s hard to overstate how thoroughly this move will shake up the retail industry. Same-day delivery has long been the holy grail of Internet retailers, something that dozens of startups have tried and failed to accomplish. (Remember Kozmo.com?) But Amazon is investing billions to make next-day delivery standard, and same-day delivery an option for lots of customers. If it can pull that off, the company will permanently alter how we shop. To put it more bluntly: Physical retailers will be hosed.… Physical retailers have long argued that once Amazon plays fairly on taxes, the company wouldn’t look like such a great deal to most consumers. If prices were equal, you’d always go with the “instant gratification” of shopping in the real world. The trouble with that argument is that shopping offline isn’t really “instant”—it takes time to get in the car, go to the store, find what you want, stand in line, and drive back home. Getting something shipped to your house offers gratification that’s even more instant: Order something in the morning and get it later in the day, without doing anything else. Why would you ever shop anywhere else?"

…appears that whole TED brand induces laughter from many of those skeptical of corporate speak & techno-jargon. At first, I thought I was laughing alone; however, it turns out that lots of other people are equally unimpressed by the current state of TED…I’m not the only one who does not take TED very seriously or worse, views the whole project as suspect…

Perhaps the biggest complaint I heard was that TED smells of corporatism…

So many of the TED talks take on the form of those famous patent medicine tonic cure-all pitches of previous centuries, as though they must convince you not through the content of what’s being said but through the hyper-engaging style of the delivery…

As Mike Bulajewski pointed out in a Tweet, “TED’s ‘revolutionary ideas’ mask capitalism as usual, giving it a narrative of progress and change.”"

Once a customer makes a buy on Amazon’s website he can select a 7-Eleven close to work, or on the way home and have the package dropped off there.

When the package is actually delivered, the customer receives an email notification along with a bar code to his smartphone and heads to the 7-Eleven. There he’ll stand in front of the locker system, which looks like the offspring between an ATM machine and a safety deposit box. The machine will scan the bar code on his handset to receive a PIN number. He’ll punch that PIN number and retrieve the package."

"My top two choices, however, stood tall as perhaps the best stock I’ve had the pleasure of reading on the web, both in terms of their scope, but more interestingly about how they treated their content and audience. There’s a pattern here that I enjoy. I’d like to introduce you to them, and hopefully in the process make a bit of a point about the direction I want the web to take in the next year."

"I suppose I’m hungry for curated educational materials online. These are more than lists of books to read: they’re organized, edited, and have a clear point of view about the content they are presenting, and subvert the typical scatter-shot approach of half the web (like Wikipedia), or the hyper-linear, storyless other half that obsesses over lists. And that’s the frustrating thing about trying to teach yourself things online: you’re new, so you don’t know what’s important, but everything is spread so thin and all over the place, so it’s difficult to make meaningful connections."

If you have, you’ll know what I’m talking about. You’ll have flicked a switched, cap deploy‘d, or flipped your closed sign to open, and just waited – holding your breath for whatever happens next.

And at that moment everything that’s wrong with it suddenly comes into sharp focus...

So you wear your learning smile, step back a bit, have a think, and work out what to do next.

But whatever you do next, you’ve shipped. You’ve joined the club.

And the next time someone produces an antenna with a weak spot, or a sticky accelerator, you’re more likely to feel their pain, listen to their words and trust their actions than the braying media who have never shipped anything in their lives."

"My biggest gripe is how can a person unabashedly present information that breaks every rule they praise? How can a 400 page book containing one case study after another conclude that interactivity and dynamic content is necessary for effective learning? How can a lecturer drone on and on about the wonderfulness of social networks because they reward the individuality of the user, and still wait until the end to solicit questions?" In my own case - 90 percent of the teaching and learning I do, I do right here, on my website. Talks and stuff add some multimedia to the content. My site isn't a game because I'm not really advocating games. It is (a node in) a professional community, and that's what I model."

I'd suggest it's not just the sitting around, it's sitting around while half paying attention to something else (the match, automatic pilot). This leaves enough room for proper story-telling, for holding court, not interrupted by sniping, conversation or one-up-person-ship...I'm still not sure that story is that important to stories. You know, all that beginning, middle, end stuff, narrative arc...Games people go on about it all the time, ad people are convinced they're masters of story miniatures. I think, very often, story is just something to hang all the important bits on. & not in a significant, meaningful way, like a backbone or scaffold...more of a coat-hanger. The actual stuff that connects isn't about plot or narrative; it's texture, observations, images, jokes, juxtapositions, felicitous phrases & little moments of aha."
