robertogrecoWomen have complained, justly, about the behavior of “macho” men. But despite their he-man pretensions and their captivation by masculine heroes of sports, war, and the Old West, most men are now entirely accustomed to obeying and currying the favor of their bosses. Because of this, of course, they hate their jobs--they mutter, “Thank God it’s Friday” and “Pretty Good for Monday”--but they do as they are told. They are more compliant than most housewives have been. Their characters combine feudal submissiveness with modern helplessness. They have accepted almost without protest, and often with relief, their dispossession of any usable property and, with that, their loss of economic independence and their consequent subordination to bosses. They have submitted to the destruction of the household economy and thus of the household, to the loss of home employment and self-employment, to the disintegration of their families and communities, to the desecration and pillage of their country, and they have continued abjectly to believe, obey, and vote for the people who have most eagerly abetted this ruin and who have most profited from it. These men, moreover, are helpless to do anything for themselves or anyone else without money, and so for money they do whatever they are told. They know that their ability to be useful is precisely defined by their willingness to be somebody else’s tool. Is it any wonder that they talk tough and worship athletes and cowboys? Is it any wonder that some of them are violent?
A related phenomenon is the manufactured “rebellion” of teens in high school and college, who know that forty or fifty years as docile “human resources” looms ahead, as surely as Thanksgiving looms for the condemned turkey. How many frat boys pose as Blutto Blutarsky as a way of pretending they won’t be a brown-nose Darren Stevens in five years? Likewise the “alternative” culture adopted by young adults as an over-compensation for their working life as white collar drones.
This insistent denial, this clutching at any psychological defense against the sheer repugnance of a “job,” this desperate need to believe that “this is not really us, this is not what we really do,” is quite understandable. We don’t cut loose our values, our priorities, our judgment, and our dignity, and leave them at the door when we enter our homes; but that’s exactly what we do in our existence on the job. For the majority of people throughout history, for the majority of Americans until around a hundred years ago, “work” was something we did on our own turf: the farmer or tradesman planned the order of his tasks as he saw fit, and carried them out from beginning to end in accordance with his own judgment and sense of workmanship. A “job,” on the other hand, amounts (as Berry said) to being somebody else’s tool. And the main reason for the change, a dead horse I’ve spent a considerable amount of time beating in this blog, is: We Was Robbed!
What’s more, it’s utterly unnatural. As a commentator on the local public access channel recently pointed out, we’re biologically designed to respond, when somebody won’t stop following us around and bugging us, by either kicking the crap out of them or getting away from them. But for eight hours or more at a time, we’re put into a situation where we’re expected to smile and nod, instead. No wonder so many people who get tired of smiling and nodding show up on the six o’clock news.
But less dramatically, it’s no wonder so many people drag themselves to their jobs every day with a sense of dread, and spend their lives in the real world attempting to prove that those jobs have nothing to do with who they really are.
It’s not by accident that the main lesson taught in the publik skools is the skills necessary to survive and advance in a hierarchy: to identify the person in a position to benefit us, identify what that authority figure expects and then do it, to feel a temporary easing-up of our permanent state of unfocused anxiety whenever that gold star is stuck on our paper or that extra item is added to our resume. Those are exactly the skills a job calls for. A job, as opposed to work, involves infantilization: a man with a job is, while on his employer’s turf, a glorified third-grader trying to win Teacher’s approval.
The sooner we restore a society where work is something we do, and not something we’re “given,” a society where we’re in control of our working lives, the sooner we can do away with fake machismo, commodified rebellion, and going postal."]]>2005 kevincarson rebellion anarchism wendellberry highschool teens youth psychology schools schooling unschooling deschooling society work machismo teaching education howweteach labor authority hierarchy capitalismhttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:b1be35d6f58f/Love as a Verb - Strange Matters2023-08-15T02:04:14+00:00

robertogreco@ztsamudzi No worries, we are fans of them and similar social movements at the same time in various places, like the Pachuces in the US. We talk about the Schlurfs in that podcast episode, there is a written intro here: https://libcom.org/history/schlurfs-%E2%80%93-youth-against-nazism

@atsamudzi This same thing happened in Austria. Members of working class anti-Nazi youth movements like the Edelweiss Pirates in Germany and the Schlurfs in Austria both got caught up in this, and "Schlurf" continued to be used as a slur for "slacker" after WWII. https://workingclasshistory.com/2018/04/04/wch4-anti-nazi-youth-movements-in-world-war-ii/

having discovered the word "dilettante" comes from the italian word for "delight" i have decided i would much rather be a dilettante. etymonline tells me that the pejorative sense of the word only "emerged late 18c. by contrast with /professional/"

robertogrecoLet us seek together, if you wish, the laws of society, the manner in which these laws are realized, the process by which we shall succeed in discovering them; but, for God’s sake, after having demolished all the a priori dogmatisms, do not let us in our turn dream of indoctrinating the people; do not let us fall into the contradiction of your compatriot Martin Luther, who, having overthrown Catholic theology, at once set about, with excommunication and anathema, the foundation of a Protestant theology… let us carry on a good and loyal polemic; let us give the world an example of learned and far-sighted tolerance, but let us not, merely because we are at the head of a movement, make ourselves the leaders of a new intolerance, let us not pose as the apostles of a new religion, even if it be the religion of logic, the religion of reason. Let us gather together and encourage all protests, let us brand all exclusiveness, all mysticism; let us never regard a question as exhausted, and when we have used our last argument, let us begin again, if need be, with eloquence and irony. On that condition, I will gladly enter your association. Otherwise — no!
It was a warning that many of those who flew the red flag ought to have listened more closely to.
Anarchists could be quarrelsome, and often impractical—a famous anarchist slogan is “demand the impossible.” But they were also wonderfully clear-sighted: An anarchist never conspired in the delusion that a clearly oppressive society was a place of freedom. There is a wonderful scene in the film Dr. Zhivago where Klaus Kinski has a cameo as an anarchist imprisoned on a train carrying forced laborers. Kinski’s anarchist declares himself “the only free man on the train” because he is the only one willing to call the guard a “lickspittle” and a “liar” to his face after the guard claims Kinski is there as a “voluntary” laborer.

When I read the writings of Peter Kropotkin, Alexander Berkman, Errico Malatesta, or Emma Goldman, I was impressed by their force and clarity. Goldman, in My Disillusionment in Russia, wrote frankly and honestly about how her hopes about the freedom to be found in the Soviet Union had been dashed during her visit to it:
I had come to Russia possessed by the hope that I should find a new-born country, with its people wholly consecrated to the great, though very difficult, task of revolutionary reconstruction. And I had fervently hoped that I might become an active part of the inspiring work. I found reality in Russia grotesque, totally unlike the great ideal that had borne me upon the crest of high hope to the land of promise… I saw before me the Bolshevik State, formidable, crushing every constructive revolutionary effort, suppressing, debasing, and disintegrating everything.
Importantly, though, Goldman’s disillusionment did not lead her to become a conservative anti-communist. She remained a revolutionary socialist, because she had a vision of socialism that was both anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian. I often think that anarchism’s slogan should be “Actually, Both of Those Things Are Bad,” because of its commitment to rejecting false dichotomies and declining to join one “camp” or the other.
My appreciation of anarchism was deepened by my reading of Noam Chomsky, who identifies himself as operating within the anarchist tradition. Many anarchists are skeptical of whether Chomsky “is” an anarchist, because he endorses plenty of social democratic policies, thought you should vote for Hillary Clinton if you lived in a swing state, and is not a revolutionary. His political approach is highly pragmatic. His intellectual approach, however, is thoroughly anarchistic. He often speaks about the anarchist approach to the legitimacy of authority:
“Authority, unless justified, is inherently illegitimate and that the burden of proof is on those in authority. If this burden can’t be met, the authority in question should be dismantled.”
That doesn’t mean that there are no legitimate authorities. But it does mean that no authority is presumptively legitimate. The king’s orders might be good ones, but they are not good because he is the king, and their being good does not necessarily make kings good or necessary. Your professor may be right, but they are not right because they are your professor.
Interestingly, Chomsky’s anarchistic approach is one way in which his twin intellectual endeavors (linguistics and political critique) are unified. Chomsky has always brushed aside the common question: “What connects your linguistic work with your analysis of U.S. foreign policy?” by correctly pointing out that there is almost nothing in common between “understanding the deep roots of human language use” and “criticizing the United States for dropping bombs on Vietnamese people.” However, one way in which these two parts of his life are united is that in each domain, he achieved his insights through applying the anarchistic “presumption against existing authority.” His influential critique of behaviorist explanations for the development of language, and his precipitation of a “revolution” in linguistics, came from a willingness to ask simple questions that challenged conventional wisdom. Likewise, Chomsky’s writings on U.S. foreign policy frequently focus on how powerful actors use euphemisms to cover up atrocities. He does not accept justifications for wars because they come from foreign policy think tanks, or because the person offering them has elite credentials and a binder in front of them labeled “evidence.” He points to simple questions that do not receive satisfactory answers. (For example, why was the Vietnam War not being classified as a “U.S. invasion of Vietnam,” even though that was plainly what it was? Why is an act committed by the United States never labeled terrorism even when it is identical to an act committed by one of our enemies?)"]]>unschooling deschooling anarchism anarchy thinking howwethink criticalthinking questioneverything governance communism marxism socialism politics history authority 2019 karlmarx exlusivity exclusiveness mikhailbakunin religion dogma indictrination dissent tolerance oppression mysticism martinluther catholicism peterkropotkin emmagoldman alexanderberkman erricomalatesta sovietunion ussr liberation freedom noamchomsky legitimacy authoritarianism proudhon pierre-josephproudhon malatestahttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:5f19cb9b5df5/Hedgehog Noontime Discussion: Parental Authority and Liberal Society - YouTube2022-01-31T01:55:52+00:00

robertogrecoHere’s something I am wondering… as a parent… Why are there so many tests happening during remote learning? Aren’t there other ways to assess at this point that would be more logically aligned with the type of learning environment students are in?
Before the late 19th century, no human society had ever attempted to formally educate the entire populace. It was either aristocracy, meritocracy, or a blend. And always male.
We’re still smack-dab in the middle of the largest experiment on children ever done.
Most teachers perpetuate the “banking” model (Freire) used on them by their teachers, who likewise inherited it from theirs, etc.
Thus the elite “Lyceum” style of instruction continues even though it’s ineffectual with most kids.
What’s worse, the key strategies we’ve discovered, driven by cognitive science & child psychology, are quite regularly dismissed by pencil-pushing, test-driven administrators. Much like Trump ignores science, the majority of principals & superintendents I’ve known flout research.
Some definitions.
Banking model --> kids are like piggy banks: empty till you fill them with knowledge that you're the expert in.
Lyceum --> originally Aristotle’s school, where the sons of land-owning citizens learned through lectures and research.
Things we (scholars) DO know:
-Homework doesn’t really help, especially younger kids.
-Students don’t learn a thing from testing. Most teachers don’t either (it’s supposed to help them tweak instruction, but that rarely happens).
-Spending too much time on weak subjects HURTS.
Do you want kids to learn? Here’s something we’ve discovered.
Kids learn things that matter to them, either because the knowledge and skills are “cool,” or because …
… they give the kids tools to liberate themselves and their communities.
Maintaining the status quo? Nope.
Kids are acutely aware of injustice and by nature rebellious against the systems of authority that keep autonomy away from them.
If you’re perpetuating those systems, teachers, you’ve already freaking lost.
They won’t be learning much from you.
Except what not to become.
Sure, you can wear them down.
That’s what happened to most of you, isn’t it?
You saw the hideous flaw in the world and wanted to heal it. But year after numbing year, they made you learn their dogma by rote.
And now many of you are breaking the souls of children, too.
For what?
It’s all smoke and mirrors. All the carefully crafted objectives, units and exams.
WE.
DON’T.
KNOW.
HOW.
PEOPLE.
LEARN.
We barely understand the physical mechanisms behind MEMORY.
But we DO know kids aren’t empty piggy banks.
They are BRIMMING with thought.
The last and most disgusting reality? The thing I hear in classroom after freaking classroom?
Education is all about capitalism.
“You need to learn these skills to get a good job.”
To be a good laborer. To help the wealthy generate more wealth, while you get scraps.
THAT is why modern education is a failure.
Its basic premise is monstrous.
“Why should I learn to read, Dr. Bowles?”
Because reading is magical. It makes life worth living. And being able to read, you can decode the strategies of your oppressors & stop them w/ their own words”]]>davidbowles capitalism education schools schooling teaching howweteach learning howwelearn unschooling deschooling paulofreire pedagogyoftheoppressed bankingmodelofeducation children reading purpose authority authoritarianism exploitation society meritocracy aristocracy elitism hierarchy justice unjustice communities statusquo objectives knowledge memory whatmatters cv testing grades grading homework time aristotle lyceum psychology 2020https://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:e9daf483d856/Is Trump a Fascist? Just prior to the elections, in the first country which deems it worthwhile to proceed in this kind of public expression of opinion, have yourself put on the ballot. Each of us has within himself the potential of an orator: multicolored loin cloths, glass trinkets of words. Through Surrealism he will take despair unawares in its poverty. One night, on a stage, he will, by himself, carve up the eternal heaven, that Peau de l'ours. He will promise so much that any promises he keeps will be a source of wonder and dismay. In answer to the claims of an entire people he will give a partial and ludicrous vote. He will make the bitterest enemies partake of a secret desire which will blow up the countries. And in this he will succeed simply by allowing himself to be moved by the immense word which dissolves into pity and revolves in hate. Incapable of failure, he will play on the velvet of all failures. He will be truly elected, and women will love him with an all-consuming passion.
Maybe I was 15 when I first read this. I am a product of a past I can’t remember. They said I had Asperger’s [syndrome] and ADHD and OCD. I don’t agree. I will nod just to support some kid that might be listening just to let them know its not over just because you were diagnosed with something. But to me we are just slaves of our brains and in much less control than we think. The brain is the god and the master. Breton didn't know of the Internet and now it has become our second brain and we just went from a solar system to a whole universe.
Dominic Boyer: In writing the article [for American Ethnologist] I tried to take very seriously your caution during the election campaign not to try to fit Besti Flokkurinn into some preconceived category. When it comes to politics there are many preconceived categories and they exert a lot of gravitational force to draw new ideas and experiments into their orbit (or destroy them). Convention always tries to eliminate innovation if it can. So, now that you've been doing this (being mayor) for a while, do you still feel the need to resist the conventional categories? Or have you and Besti Flokkurinn reached the point where these things no longer matter?
Gnarr: To us we are “doing time” in politics. We are just here for the experience, like tourists in a foreign country. Let’s say I was sentenced to jail and in jail I had sex with other men. Would that make me gay? Maybe to some. They call us “old school socialists.” But we really don’t care what they call us. They cannot categorize the Best party. We stand for nothing but joy, honesty and silliness. We have no real manifesto, no membership, no ideology. I refuse to be defined because it is death. In the words of E.B. White, “Analyzing comedy is like dissecting a frog: few people are interested and the frog dies of it.” I don’t wanna be just another dead frog so I keep on fighting.
Boyer: A politics beyond categories is refreshing since “normal” politics in most parts of the world today means always hearing the same ideas and discourse (e.g., free markets, privatization, economic growth) from supposedly different parties. Like in the U.S. where we have two parties that share 95% of the same political code. This sameness everywhere is why there is such widespread indifference to politics, just like in the Soviet Union before the collapse. I remember reading something you wrote where you said that you went into politics out of frustration. That you wanted to fuck the system in some way. But maybe not to attack politicians so much as to give people hope that humanity could be better than its political system. Is that right? If so, I want to ask what should the rest of the world be learning from the Best Party? For many of us, Iceland is a bright light in an otherwise very dark time.
Gnarr: Yes, it is right. I’m a virus, but a friendly one, harmful to the system but not to people. I hope I will inspire the introvert people all around the world to get involved in politics. My message is: There is no authority but yourself. Find your inner guru!
Boyer: Can you tell me a little bit about the relationship between the Best Party and Bright Future? Does Bright Future share the anarcho-surrealist method of the Best Party; is it somehow an extension of your experiment, or something altogether different? Related to this, I detect some (perhaps a lot of) ambivalence from you about working in politics – I’m sure it must be very frustrating sometimes. Would you want to continue after your term as mayor is up?
Gnarr: Bright Future is totally different from the Best party. It is a political party but the Best is more of a state of mind. There is nothing anarchic or surrealistic about it. [Bright Future] is more of a typical liberal democratic party. My support for it is mostly moral as many of my friends are involved. Yeah, a lot of ambivalence Most of the time it is business as usual and sometimes it’s fun but it can also be terrifying. I don´t know if I want to continue working as mayor. I’m doing time. It is mostly about surviving in a hostile environment. It is a bit like the people on National Geographic channel who are dropped into Alaskan wilderness somewhere and are forced to survive on their own. Why? Just for the hell of it and maybe to prove a point, to be able to live and tell about it. I shouldn't be alive, but I am!
Boyer: What do you find terrifying about working in politics? And, from where do you draw the strength/resolve to continue this work? Another way of asking the same question: where do you find the joy that allows you to maintain the Best Party state of mind and to keep going?
Gnarr: [There are] parliamentary elections here tomorrow. Polls show over 50% support for the conservative and the center party and some rise in nationalist views. Century Aluminum released a press release today saying they look forward to working with the new government and building new smelters in Iceland. So the right is on the rise and the left has left.
[Editorial note: The conversation between Boyer and Gnarr took place via Facebook messages between March 23 and April 28, 2013. On the April 27, parliamentary elections took place in Iceland. The center-right coalition of the Independence and Progressive parties, the exact coalition that had governed over the run-up to the Icelandic banking crisis, returned to power with 51.13% of the popular vote. News media singled out their opposition to joining the European Union as the single biggest factor in the coalition’s return to power. Bright Future, the new national party loosely affiliated with the Best Party, meanwhile received only 8.25% of the popular vote.]
Boyer: So, how did it go? Any immediate reactions to the election?
Gnarr: Shit! Democracy? No, anarchy!
Boyer: Alas! I am sorry. Is there a bright side? The best parody in the U.S. came during the Bush years because the authoritarianism became so obvious, savage and perverse. Why do you think people went back to this Independence Party?
Gnarr: I can’t get my head around it. They control the media. They publish what they want us to see. They are rich and they are powerful. They manipulate the public. The public likes to be manipulated? Are people that naive? I don’t know. One thing is for sure. They will want to start some heavy industry plans with Glencore and such companies. They want to use our natural resources to fuel the economy and finance their promises. I and we are very skeptical towards any plans to build more aluminum smelters and dam rivers. It might create a beef. But that was also my biggest disappointment with the last government. They did many good things. The Left Greens approved and fought for oil drilling in Icelandic waters. A Green Party happy with oil drilling on fishing grounds? Wtf! Why? It really doesn’t matter much if you are left or right, both have pros and cons and the leftists have such great ideologies but in the end money talks and bullshit walks and hey, oil creates jobs! It’s a game, just a game."]]>2013 iceland reykjavík politics via:justinpickard anarchism elections andrébreton adhd ocd aspergers bestparty authority authoritarianism brightfuture stateofmind unschooling deschooling anarchy democracy jóngnarrhttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:f5b4e552da61/Coronavirus and the Blindness of Authoritarianism - The Atlantic2020-02-25T06:37:57+00:00

robertogrecoAs a teen-ager, a decade ago, in the small city of Rockford, Illinois, Bing Liu filmed himself and his friends skateboarding. He shot much of his footage while skating alongside them, and, as a result, the skating sequences of his documentary “Minding the Gap” (which opens today in theatres and streams on Hulu) have a surging, gliding, soaring, joyously speedy energy that offers a hypnotic whirl and rush. Those images of skating, however, are merely the background and context for the film, and the diverting thrill that they offer is crucial to the film’s substance. That substance—domestic trauma, systemic racism, and economic dislocation—is also the very stuff of society, and the near-at-hand intimacy gives rise to a film of vast scope and political depth.
Allowing his film to unfold over years of shooting and editing and re-editing, Liu uncovered the hidden depth and dimension in his subject matter.

“Minding the Gap” builds Liu’s investigations, and the personal and ethical considerations that they entail, into the film. What he discovers—and films—of his friends’ present-day lives disturbs him, and Liu grapples with his own conflicts even while filming himself grappling with them. The details of the film make for an exemplary work of reporting. Liu’s clear revelation of specific yet complex events brings out psychological causality and logical connections but doesn’t impose a narrative; rather, the drama crystallizes as the events unfold. It’s a documentary in which the very nature of investigation is established—intellectually, aesthetically, and morally—by way of the personal implication of the filmmaker in the subject, of the filmmaker’s own need to make the images, to talk with the participants, to get beyond the surfaces of the settings. “Minding the Gap” is a personal documentary of the highest sort, in which the film’s necessity to the filmmaker—and its obstacles, its resistances, its emotional and moral demands on him—are part of its very existence.
Learning technical skills from online forums and by emulating filmmakers who inspired him, Liu was then able to allow the personal, emotional story to emerge. https://filmmakermagazine.com/105737-i-had-a-moral-crisis-bing-liu-on-minding-the-gap-personal-doc-voiceovers-and-cycles-of-abuse/#.W8i8by-ZMWo
Filmmaker: I had seen part of a cut that you had about a year ago. What I remember is, there was a lot more voiceover and the structure was different. There was a scene in the first ten minutes where you’re going to meet your mom to do the interview about you being abused by your stepfather, and you’re being interviewed in the car on the way: “So how do you feel about this?” At a certain point, obviously a lot of those things changed. Documentary editing processes are inherently long and complicated, but I’d love it if you could talk about thinking through some of those changes.
Liu: I didn’t begin the film wanting to be in the film. My background is, I got a camera to make videos when I was 14. I watched movies that inspired me, like Waking Life, Kids and Gummo. Some of my first shorts when I was a teen were this sort of Slacker plot where I follow people around Rockford as they interact with each other. The structure is based off of hand-offs, to give you a slice of community and the people in it. Anyway, I learned cinematography and editing through going to forums. There’s this website called Skate Perception that was kind of the Reddit for skate media makers all over the country. This was in the 2000s, when the internet was still finding its identity in many ways. It no longer exists; forums aren’t really a thing, for the most part.
“I didn’t go to film school, because everybody that I worked with in film was like: if you go to school, don’t go to school for film.” https://nofilmschool.com/2018/08/minding-gap-bing-liu-interview
NFS: How did you develop your unconventional aesthetics over time, starting from such a young age?
Liu: It was a mix of just emulating other creators and films that I was watching and also just going online and learning. By the time I was 16, I had a camera that I could set exposure and color temperature and with ND filters on it. By the time I was 17, I had a 24p camera and I was building my own dollies, so it was sort of just like exploring and emulation of what was happening at the time, which was a mix of the internet connecting more people, and also the DIY-style filmmaking that was growing with the advent of DSLR shooting video. I never really saw a career in film as a viable thing. I thought making films was just what I did.
"The Glidecam was freeing because you can run down stairs when you get good enough at it, and even jump over things with the cameras."
NFS: How did you transition to realizing that you could actually do this professionally?
Liu: It was when I got a job as a PA when I was 19 and I was like, “Oh, I can get paid $50 a day to like fetch coffee and carry heavy camera cases around for 14 hours.” It was less about the $50 and more about the “Oh, you can do this.”
NFS: That's what we're always telling people who want to break into the business: just get on set.
Liu: Yeah, I didn't go to film school, because everybody that I worked with in film was like: if you go to school. don't go to school for film, and so I went to school for literature.

robertogrecoParents are meant to be dominant over their children. They are meant to be in charge. But nowadays they are so hesitant about exerting their authority — a hesitancy imposed upon them by the advice-givers — that it is difficult for them to run the home in an effective manner. . . . The experiences of previous generations show that it is possible to rear well-adjusted children without making them feel that they are the center of the universe or that a time-out is the worst thing that could happen to them if they disobey. Parents know better than their children and should not feel diffident about telling them what to do. Parents, too, have a right to a happy and peaceful home life. In traditional societies, parents are not pals. They are not playmates. The idea that parents should have to entertain their children is bizarre to people in these societies. They would fall down laughing if you tried to tell them about “quality time.”
The message again is: Think of the parent-child relationship more like that of a healthy friendship or marriage. Hold them to a normal standards. Be frank and direct with them. Don’t worry about constantly entertaining them or monitoring their emotions. And whenever possible, Harris, says enjoy yourself! “Parents are meant to enjoy parenting. If you are not enjoying it, maybe you’re working too hard.”
In the end, Harris wants to free us from the guilt, anxiety, and fear that plagues so much of modern parenting, largely bred from the “advice-givers” who have convinced us that parenting is a science and you’re responsible for its outcomes:
You’ve followed their advice and where has it got you? They’ve made you feel guilty if you don’t love all your children equally, though it’s not your fault if nature made some kids more lovable than others. They’ve made you feel guilty if you don’t give them enough quality time, though your kids seem to prefer to spend their quality time with their friends. They’ve made you feel guilty if you don’t give your kids two parents, one of each sex, though there is no unambiguous evidence that it matters in the long run. They’ve made you feel guilty if you hit your child, though big hominids have been hitting little ones for millions of years. Worst of all, they’ve made you feel guilty if anything goes wrong with your child. It’s easy to blame parents for everything: they’re sitting ducks. Fair game ever since Freud lit his first cigar.
Take care of the basics. Give your kid a home and keep them healthy. Connect them to positive peer groups. Teach them what you can. Build a home life that works for everyone. Try to enjoy the person who your child is. Do your best to build a bond between child and parent that will last for a lifetime. This is what Judith Rich Harris says we can do.
But when it comes to influencing your child’s behavior, personality, attitudes, and knowledge in the long run: stop. Recognize how little impact you have, give up the illusion of control, and relax. We can neither perfect nor ruin our children, Harris says: “They are not yours to perfect or ruin: they belong to tomorrow.”"]]>blakeboles parenting children nature nurture environment naturenurture genetics relationships respect peers conformity social youth adolescence religion belonging authority authoritarianism marriage society schools schooling education learning internet online youtube web socialmedia influence bullying condescension micromanagement judithrichharris books toread canon culture class youthculturehttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:bd8e818c909a/Article: Notes On An Anarchist Pedagogy – AnarchistStudies.Blog2018-05-24T18:06:12+00:00

robertogrecoSometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”
and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.
This is an amazing & astute observation and applies readily to many aspects of our current political moment, i.e. the highest status group in the US for the past two centuries (white males) experiencing a steep decline in their status relative to other groups. This effect plays out in relation to gender, race, sexual orientation, age, and class. An almost cartoonishly on-the-nose example is Trump referring to undocumented immigrants as “animals” and then whining about the press giving him a hard time. You can also see it when conservative intellectuals with abundant social standing and privilege complain that their ideas about hanging women or the innate inferiority of non-whites are being censored.
Men who abuse their partners do this…and then sometimes parlay their authoritarian frustrations & easily available assault weapons into mass shootings. There are ample examples of law enforcement — the ultimate embodiment of authority in America — treating immigrants, women, black men, etc. like less than human. A perfect example is the “incel” movement, a group of typically young, white, straight men who feel they have a right to sex and therefore treat women who won’t oblige them like garbage.
You can see it happening in smaller, everyday ways too: never trust anyone who treats restaurant servers like shit because what they’re really doing is abusing their authority as a paying customer to treat another person as subhuman."]]>culture diversity language respect personhood authority jasonkottke kottke status hierarchy patriarchy gender race racism sexism lawenforcement humanism humanshttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:d2e36b7476a0/
