https://blog.ayjay.org/the-homebound-symphony/
robertogrecoThe Symphony performed music — classical, jazz, orchestral arrangements of pre-collapse pop songs — and Shakespeare. They’d performed more modern plays sometimes in the first few years, but what was startling, what no one would have anticipated, was that audiences seemed to prefer Shakespeare to their other theatrical offerings.
“People want what was best about the world,” Dieter said.
Later we learn that “All three caravans of the Traveling Symphony are labeled as such, THE TRAVELING SYMPHONY lettered in white on both sides, but the lead caravan carries an additional line of text: Because survival is insufficient.” Dieter says, “That quote on the lead caravan would be way more profound if we hadn’t lifted it from Star Trek,” but not everyone agrees that the quote’s origin is a problem. Take wisdom where you find it, is their view.
In his dyspeptic screed of fifty years ago, In Bluebeard’s Castle, George Steiner talks about living in a “post-culture” — a society whose culture has died even if its monuments may remain:
At great pains and cost, Altstädtte, whole cities, have been rebuilt, stone by numbered stone, geranium pot by geranium pot. Photographically there is no way of telling; the patina on the gables is even richer than before. But there is something unmistakably amiss. Go to Dresden or Warsaw, stand in one of the exquisitely recomposed squares in Verona, and you will feel it. The perfection of renewal has a lacquered depth. As if the light at the cornices had not been restored, as if the air were inappropriate and carried still an edge of fire. There is nothing mystical to this impression; it is almost painfully literal. It may be that the coherence of an ancient thing is harmonic with time, that the perspective of a street, of a roof line, that have lived their natural being can be replicated but not re-created (even where it is, ideally, indistinguishable from the original, reproduction is not the vital form). Handsome as it is, the Old City of Warsaw is a stage set; walking through it, the living create no active resonance. It is the image of those precisely restored house fronts, of those managed lights and shadows which I keep in mind when trying to discriminate between what is irretrievable — though it may still be about — and what has in it the pressure of life.
A powerful passage; but, while I agree with Steiner that we are living in a kind of post-culture, I reject his language of the “irretrievable,” or as he says elsewhere in that essay, “irreparable.” I’ll explain why.
First the bad news. I don’t know a statement more indicative of the character of our moment than this by J. D. Vance: “I think our people hate the right people.” It’s what almost everyone believes these days, isn’t it? That they and their people hate the right people. And it seems to me that that is a pretty good definition of a post-culture: a society in which people have no higher ambition than to bring down those they perceive to be their enemies. (I’m setting aside the obvious point that Christians aren’t supposed to hate anyone.) I couldn’t agree more with my friend Yuval Levin that our moment is A Time to Build, but when you’re only concerned with hating the right people, who has time to build anything?
There are a lot of people out there doing good work to expose the absurdities, the hypocrisies, and the sheer destructiveness of both the Left and the Right. I myself did some of that work for several years, but I’m not inclined to keep doing it, largely because that work of critique, however necessary, lacks a constructive dimension. There has to be something better we can do than curse our enemies — or the darkness of the present moment. If I agree with Yuval that this is indeed a time to build, then what can I build?
And as regular readers of this blog know, my particular emphasis is not on building from scratch but on restoring, renewing, and repairing. As Steiner notes, the remnants of Culture Lost surround us — still more so than when he wrote those words: the great benefit of the Internet is its ability to preserve cultural artifacts that very few people have any use for today. But such preservation is not automatic and inevitable. On the Internet, things get lost, links stop working, even the Wayback Machine is not able to rescue everything, though it rescues a hell of a lot. My task, as I now conceive it, is not to engage in critique but rather to bear a small light and keep it burning for the next generation and maybe the generation after that. I want to find what is wise and good and beautiful and true and pass along to my readers as much of it as I can, in a form that will be accessible and comprehensible to them.
That last point is worth emphasizing. Great works of art and of wisdom cannot always speak clearly for themselves: they often need an interpreter. And sometimes they need to be revised to some degree to make them useful to us. This is why I have talked about vendoring culture: the creative activity of making accessible and vivid what otherwise could be inscrutable and might therefore seem pointless. It is a teacherly thing to do, I suppose, and that makes sense for me, because I have never been able to think of myself primarily as a scholar or a writer but rather as a teacher who writes. Wordsworth famously wrote “what we have loved, others will love, and we will teach them how” – but if we don’t teach them how, then there is very little chance that they will indeed love what we have loved.
Station Eleven had the Traveling Symphony: I’m trying to be the Homebound Symphony. Just one person sitting in my study with a computer on my lap, reading and listening and viewing, and recording and sifting and transmitting – sharing the good, the true, and the beautiful, with added commentary. The initial purpose of this work is to repair, not the whole culture, but just my own attention. On a daily basis I retrain my mind to attend to what is worthy. It is the task of a lifetime, especially in an environment which strives constantly to commandeer my attention, to remove it from my control, to make me a passive consumer of what others wish me to look at or listen to.
So first of all I’m doing this work — this blog; my essays; my books; my newsletter, which is all about praise and delight — for myself, but one of the reasons that I can be disciplined in redirecting my attention is that I’ve learned that if I do so it can be helpful to others. That’s really been the great lesson for me of the last few weeks — since I started my Buy Me a Coffee page: I’ve learned that a few people appreciate the ways in which I can help them redirect their own attention.
As David Samuels has said in a memorable essay, “My problem is how to escape from it all in order to continue being me. The aim of any sane person in an age like this one is to be free to love the people you love and secure the freedom of [your] own thoughts, the same way you step out of the way of an oncoming truck.” But it’s not only about continuing to be myself, or even about loving my family and friends (though that love will always be my first priority). Survival is insufficient. I also feel an obligation to cup my hand around a candle to shield its flame in the strong winds. As the book of Proverbs teaches us, “The spirit of man” — including the manifestations of that spirit in art and music and story — “is the candle of the Lord.” My job is to keep that candle burning and pass it along to those who come after me. I don’t think anything that we’ve lost or neglected is irretrievable or irreparable, not even if I fail in my duty. I think often about what Tom Stoppard’s Alexander Herzen says near the end of The Coast of Utopia: “The idea will not perish. What we let fall will be picked up by those behind. I can hear their childish voices on the hill.”"]]>stationeleven emilystjohnmandel 2022 alanjacobs davidsamuels yuvallevin jdvance georgesteiner internet web online waybackmachine truth values value commentary beauty attention art humanities love survival alexanderherzen culture society humanness humans wisdom interpretation accessibility access howweteach howwelearn teaching learning restoration renewal repair preservation archives sharinghttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:062ded04b7eb/How to Keep Time - The Atlantic [bookmarking for Season 5, "How to Keep Time" - this podcast covered other topics before that.]2024-01-23T05:11:04+00:00

robertogrecoDuring the blitz on London I saw how simple and profound was the passion for things of one’s own. The morning after poor people had been bombed out, they grieved far less for the house or rooms where they had been living than for their things, the things their mother had left them, or their children had given them. The bomb which destroyed their things destroyed part of themselves --“On Collecting” by Lord Eccles
In short, all forms of accumulating objects can potentially be “necessities of life”, if the role of emotional well-being in physical survival is adequately taken into account.
Another aspect of collection is whether it is worth distinguishing random accumulations of objects from purposeful selections. Some will say the term “collection” should be reserved for things that have been systematically ‘curated’ according to a unifying principle and should not be used to unnecessarily dignify the miscellaneous hoarding of possessions. The problem here is that you can’t really find a universally agreed definition for how “collections” are different from “accumulations,” because everyone will have their own criteria! For example, if I collect things I like – then this could very well be all my possessions! The truth is, all accumulations are actually an individual’s own selections, and therefore they will be imbued with meaning (for each person) through their own selectivity. Every accumulation, whatever additional significance it may be found to possess, has the unity that comes from its telling something about a human being who lived in a particular time and place. Of course, it might be useful to distinguish between people who deliberately pursue their own ideas of coherent groupings and people who give no conscious thought to why their possessions are multiplying as they are; but this differentiation must still acknowledge that both types of people are still “collectors.”
Then there’s the consideration of the length of time one possesses something, and whether this has any bearing on someone being a collector (or not). Simply put – once you add something to a collection, how long it stays there shouldn’t really be a factor. Some people, at all levels of sophistication and deliberateness in their collecting, willingly dispose of items and start on others.
Werner Muensterberger’s book “Collecting: An Unruly Passion” references “subjective value” in his definition of collecting, to make the point that the desirability of an object to a collector is independent of the market price it would fetch. I was originally in the camp who differentiated such people in the watch world as ‘dealers’ rather than ‘collectors’ but I think I’ve changed my view. Those who collect for investment (at least in part) or take some pride in the monetary value of what they possess… simply make this (monetary value) a part of the total psychological underpinning of their “collecting criteria”. Who are we to judge?
Muensterberger saw the origins of collecting in childhood traumas. He argued that when kids had the experience of feeling deprived of the protection and support of those close to them, they sought relief through controllable physical objects. In doing this, they became emotionally attached to one or more items which became associated in their minds with the relief of frustration and mental distress. The act of demonstrating that one possesses and controls the objects is a pleasurable experience, and one that is repeatedly satisfying because it creates “the illusion of being able to cope”.
Muensterberger’s discussion goes deeper into the psychology of collecting than many other writings on the subject. Philippe Jullian’s Les Collectioneurs, for example is relatively superficial; At one point he says “Every collection is inspired by the same basic factors: fear of boredom, desire for immortality, aesthetic sensibility, vanity, speculation.” Similarly, Holbrook Jackson, in “The Anatomy of Bibliomania”, under the heading “The Causes of Bibliomania” breaks down the sections into “Greed,” “Vanity,” and “Fashion”.
While all these reasons might impact peoples’ collecting, what is still unclear is why collecting was the chosen remedy – for example, there are other ways of passing time (i.e. curing boredom), investing (i.e. speculation), or showing off (i.e. vanity). The most fundamental question in trying to understand collecting is to ask why collecting should be the path chosen to attain personal goals.
So at this point we might decide it is best to start defining collecting by the particular combinations of goals that characterise individual collectors; but this doesn’t really reach the deepest levels of the drive to collect. An inquiry like Muensterberger’s, which tries to identify the mental processes underlying the more overt motivations, is of course an important step, even if it does not tell the whole story.
Walter Benjamin’s essay, “Unpacking My Library: A Talk about Book Collecting,” suggests there is more to be said. One of Benjamin’s most insightful observations is framed as a question: “For what else is this collection but a disorder to which habit has accommodated itself to such an extent that it can appear as order?” The pleasures of “the chase” and “adding to one’s collection” are described by Benjamin as follows: “The most profound enchantment for the collector is the locking of individual items within a magic circle in which they are fixed as the final thrill, the thrill of acquisition, passes over them.”
Concluding thoughts
The human need to find order is, to me, the most academic explanation of collecting. The other explanations such as a fascination with chance, curiosity about the past, and a desire for understanding can all slot under the umbrella of “the urge to tame the external world”. This general idea, in which collecting is traced to a human need for making the environment seem less threatening and more understandable, has been much in evidence in the past few decades, as intellectual interest in the process of collecting has increased.
Ultimately, we should try and see collecting not as evasion and escapism but as a human urge to connect with the world, to make sense of it so that we can feel in harmony with it and experience it more richly. Vladimir Nabokov, wrote a well-known account of his “obsession” with butterflies and butterfly-collecting which was originally published in The New Yorker on 12 June 1948.
Butterflies served as tangible reminders of episodes in Nabokov’s own life, and even the smell of ether, used as the killing substance for one of his earliest childhood catches, “would always cause the door of the past to fly open.” Nabokov’s repeated acts of observation and pursuit of butterflies, made him an expert lepidopterist who contributed to the field through important published papers. His understanding that collecting and rigorous thinking go hand in hand was shown by his ridicule of those who advocated the relaxing of scientific standards for collectors: “Their solicitude for the “average collector who cannot be made to dissect” is comparable to the way nervous publishers pamper the “average reader”—who cannot be made to think“.
Nabokov of course wrote novels as well as scientific articles, and he saw the connections: “I discovered in nature the nonutilitarian delights that I sought in art. Both were a form of magic, both were a game of intricate enchantment and deception.” Nabokov’s most moving words for a description of “the highest enjoyment of timelessness” came to him when he stood outdoors among “rare butterflies“- and I think this captures the essence of collecting quite perfectly:
This is ecstasy, and behind the ecstasy is something else, which I cannot explain. It is like a momentary vacuum into which rushes all that I love, a sense of oneness with sun and stone, a thrill of gratitude to whom it may concern, perhaps to the contrapuntal genius of human fate or to the tender ghosts humoring a lucky mortal. --Vladimir Nabokov – Butterflies: On life as a lepidopterist.
That’s the bottom line really… we’re all seeking ecstasy – one watch at a time. There is no right answer, and every single collector’s journey is unique… the more we try to make sense of it, the less we realise we know… and it also explains why we can’t stop, and why the often-used phrase “we will stop when we die” is pretty much the only universal truth that exists!"]]>collections collecting kingflum 2021 wernermuensterberger williambuellsprague history hobbies pastimes lordecckes philippejullian holbrookjackson walterbenjamin vladimirnabokov butterflies order libraries books bookcollecting bibliomania immortality boredom greed vanity fashion aesthetics speculation objects possessions accumulation selections behavior archives education learning howwelearnhttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:robertogreco/b:671f899a07fd/An Interview with Alexis Pauline Gumbs - Believer Magazine2021-11-17T06:53:25+00:00

robertogrecoImplementation of the new NIS policy seems to have gained momentum in 1992 but to have reached its greatest intensity in 1993. Mass destruction of records, embracing all media and all structures, took place. In a 6-8 month period in 1993, NIS headquarters alone destroyed approximately 44 tons of paper-based and microfilm records, utilising the Pretoria Iscor furnace and another facility outside Johannesburg. The evidence suggests that many operatives took the opportunity to “clean up” their offices, irrespective of the guidelines. Systematic destruction exercises continued until late in 1994, with many of the surviving minutes of chief directorate, directorate and divisional meetings and most administrative records covering the period 1989-1994 being destroyed at this late stage. NIS’s own requirements for the preparation of destruction certificates were seldom complied with. The result was a massive purging of NIS’s corporate memory. This was supplemented by the unauthorised ad hoc removal of documents by individuals for their own purposes. Any attempt to quantify this phenomenon was beyond the resources of the TRC investigation. Very little pre-1990 material survives in the paper-based, microform and electronic systems, and the documentary residue for the period 1990-1994 has been substantially sanitised. The one seemingly intact records series is minutes of senior management meetings, which covers the period 1980.1994.
The paper about the destruction of state records by Verne Harris is exceptional.
Harris, Verne. “‘They Should Have Destroyed More’: The Destruction of Public Records by the South African State in the Final Years of Apartheid, 1990-1994.”
This, FYI, is part of why SA *needed* a TRC.
