Die Schokoladentafel muss - unbeweglich in der Mikrowelle liegend - solange auf der höchsten Stufe erhitzt werden, bis sich kleine, sichtbare Schmelzpunkte gebildet haben (normalerweise reichen dafür 40 Sekunden aus, länger als 60 Sekunden sollte das aus Sicherheitsgründen ohnehin nicht getan werden). Der Abstand zwischen zwei Schmelzpunkten entspricht dabei genau der Hälfte der Länge einer Mikrowelle. Elektromagnetische Wellen - also auch Mikrowellen - bewegen sich mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit vorwärts.

Verdoppelt man jetzt den gemessenen Abstand in Zentimetern und multipliziert ihn mit der Frequenz der Mikrowelle (die steht entweder auf der Rückseite des Geräts oder in der Anleitung), so ergibt sich ein Wert, der sehr nahe an der tatsächlichen Lichtgeschwindigkeit von umgerechnet 299.792.458 Metern pro Sekunde liegt."
