All of the criticisms above were surely predictable to any QA worker at OpenAI who stress-tested the model before release. I think there are a couple of answers to that question, and they overlap significantly. First, OpenAI does need to demonstrate progress to investors and partners. It’s preparing a pre-IPO sale of employee stock shares that would value the company at $500 billion, after all. I’m sure there was some internal debate over whether or not to ship the product, but providing evidence of forward motion appears to have been a higher priority than avoiding egg on the face from a bumpy launch.

Did OpenAI think it would go this badly? No. But it also may well be that OpenAI is betting that its lead and reach are strong enough, its brand is unimpeachable enough, that it just doesn’t matter. As is true with a good many tech companies, especially the giants, in the AI age, OpenAI’s products are no longer primarily aimed at consumers but at investors. As long as you avoid a full-scale user revolt (which GPT-5 actually did incur, on some level, and more on that in a second) and you have a mix of voices critiquing it and proclaiming it the greatest AI model yet, you can continue to assuage or even attract more backers on your path of relentless expansion. To that end, the thing I found most notable about the launch, besides its getting criticized by fans and foes alike, was the explicit focus on automating work.]]></description>

While these tools can enhance human creativity when people co-create with them, it’s unclear how this will impact unassisted human creativity. We conducted two large pre-registered parallel experiments involving 1,100 participants attempting tasks targeting the two core components of creativity, divergent and convergent thinking. We compare the effects of two forms of large language model (LLM) assistance—a standard LLM providing direct answers and a coach-like LLM offering guidance—with a control group receiving no AI assistance, and focus particularly on how all groups perform in a final, unassisted stage. Our findings reveal that while LLM assistance can provide short-term boosts in creativity during assisted tasks, it may inadvertently hinder independent creative performance when users work without assistance, raising concerns about the long-term impact on human creativity and cognition.]]></description>

When I asked my students how they use chatbots, one told me that whenever he has a spreadsheet full of data (such as results from a lab experiment or information collected from a survey), he was trained in high school to write a quick bit of code to parse and analyze that data. But now, he told me, he just throws the spreadsheet into ChatGPT, which analyzes it more quickly and requires him to do almost nothing.

That’s when it hit me: A.I. is just as much a challenge to numeracy — our knowledge and ability to use mathematics and reason quantitatively — as it is to literacy.]]></description>

One of the newest examples is the current batch coming out of Y Combinator, the storied Silicon Valley startup accelerator. A quarter of the W25 startup batch have 95% of their codebases generated by AI, YC managing partner Jared Friedman said during a conversation posted on YouTube.

Friedman said that this 95% figure didn’t include things like code written to import libraries but took into consideration the code typed by humans as compared to AI.]]></description>

It’s a term not universally accepted, with some suggesting ‘confabulations’ or, more simply, ‘bullshit’. The phenomenon has captured so much attention that the website Dictionary.com picked ‘hallucinate’ as its word of the year for 2023.

Because AI hallucinations are fundamental to how LLMs work, researchers say that eliminating them completely is impossible3. But scientists such as Zou are working on ways to make hallucinations less frequent and less problematic, developing a toolbox of tricks including external fact-checking, internal self-reflection or even, in Zou’s case, conducting “brain scans” of an LLM’s artificial neurons to reveal patterns of deception.]]></description>

There are n players, and they each independently choose a natural number. The player with the lowest unique number wins the game. So if two people choose 1, a third chooses 2, and a fourth chooses 5, then the third player wins: the 1s were not unique, so 2 was the least among the unique numbers chosen.
