About half of those underimmunized children received at least one vaccine dose but did not complete the vaccination series, while the rest received no vaccines at all.

To make it easier for children to receive all of their vaccines, MIT researchers are working to develop microparticles that can release their payload weeks or months after being injected. This could lead to vaccines that can be given just once, with several doses that would be released at different time points.

In a study appearing today in the journal Advanced Materials, the researchers showed that they could use these particles to deliver two doses of diphtheria vaccine — one released immediately, and the second two weeks later. Mice that received this vaccine generated as many antibodies as mice that received two separate doses two weeks apart.]]></description>

The University of Nottingham-led team made the material by combining chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) – a disinfectant commonly used by dentists to treat mouth infections and by clinicians for cleaning before surgery – with everyday paint-on epoxy resin. Using this material, the team worked with staff at Birmingham-based specialist coating company Indestructible Paint to create a prototype antimicrobial paint. By developing and scaling up microbial-based solutions, we could mold a non-fossil fuel economy, provide a massive boost to ecosystem and crop resilience and remove enormous amounts of methane from the atmosphere, it says.

However, the researchers argue, the notion of using microbes to combat climate change is significantly overlooked, and despite lying in something of a public-eye, academic and policy blindspot, these solutions could provide safe, effective, scalable and economically sustainable climate solutions within five to 15 years.]]></description>

The survey involved 1,700 adults during the first weeks of February this year, and its findings are statistically unchanged from APPC's July 2024 survey.

We over-recruited again, just like every single one of the trials that we ran, and the trial finished one year ahead of schedule. That’s completely unheard of in cancer trials because they normally run over-long.

What will happen now is that, over the next six to 12 months, we will monitor the people in the trial and work out if there’s a difference between the people who took the cancer vaccine and the ones who didn’t. We’re hoping to have results by the end of the year or beginning of 2026. If it’s successful, we will have invented the first approved personalized mRNA vaccine, within only five years of the first licensed mRNA vaccine for Covid. That’s pretty impressive.]]></description>

New results from the phase 1 clinical trial, now published in the journal Nature, show that the therapeutic cancer vaccine activated tumor-specific immune cells that persisted in the body up to nearly four years after treatment in some patients. In addition, patients with a vaccine-induced immune response had a reduced risk of the cancer coming back at a three-year follow-up compared with patients whose immune systems did not respond.

“The latest data from the phase 1 trial are encouraging,” says Vinod Balachandran, MD, principal investigator of the trial and senior author of the new publication. “They suggest this investigational therapeutic mRNA vaccine can mobilize anti-tumor T cells that may recognize pancreatic cancers as foreign, potentially years after vaccination.”]]></description>

It's the same strain that killed a Louisiana resident in early January and sent a Canadian teenager to intensive care in early November.

The new Nevada dairy infections were first detected through milk testing conducted on January 31, according to an update Wednesday by the US Department of Agriculture. Whole genome sequencing confirmed the finding of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype D1.1. To this point, all other dairy herds affected by the outbreak have been infected with H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13.

To date, 957 herds across 16 states have been infected with H5N1 since the outbreak began last March. That tally includes four new herds from Nevada.]]></description>

They continue to work just fine. But they slow their reproduction and last a lot longer. This shifts the cells out of the active phases where they burn themselves out to a more longevity phase. This is basic science, but it can potentially be “translatable” – meaning that it can translate into clinical effectiveness. Ideally this will allow CAR-T cells to function much longer and increase their effectiveness.

This is just one incremental basic science advance. It may not even pan out clinically. However, it shows the level of research that is being done, and the tremendous potential for genetic engineering of CAR-T cells to tweak their function. We are at the beginning of the CAR-T cell era of medical intervention. More broadly, we are at the beginning of the era of using genetic engineering to modify cells for therapeutic potential, with CAR-T cells just being one application. Less well known, but no less significant, is the story of the Rutgers University chemist Selman Waksman, who coined the term “antibiotic” after noting that certain soil bacteria produced toxins that killed or inhibited other bacteria with whom they were competing for food. Waksman worked tirelessly to figure out the conditions required to grow these wild bacteria in his lab, and his efforts produced not just the second commercially available antibiotic, streptomycin, in 1946, but the next five antibiotics brought to market, too. Ultimately, searching the soil for antibiotic-producing microbes proved far more fruitful than waiting for them to float into one’s laboratory. Today, 90% of all antibiotics are descended from the grouping of bacteria that yielded Waksmans original discoveries.]]></description>

The clever close-ups offer a sped up vision of the living beings in the jar disintegrating the cigarettes.

As the days go by, a layer of bright green moss begins to cover the insides of the jar. By the 200-day mark, only a few bits of the paper and the filters remain. As  further proof that feeding the ground leads to growth, a little plant pops up at the top of the jar.

The moment of truth comes a year later, as the producer opens the glass container. After taking all the dirt out, they spot the three cigarette filters. Since the soil has taken apart the paper and the tobacco, whatever was left of it had come undone when taking out the soil from the jar.]]></description>

They took thousands of drugs where the precise chemical structure was known, and manually tested them on Acinetobacter baumannii to see which could slow it down or kill it.

This information was fed into the AI so it could learn the chemical features of drugs that could attack the problematic bacterium.

The AI was then unleashed on a list of 6,680 compounds whose effectiveness was unknown. The results - published in Nature Chemical Biology - showed it took the AI an hour and a half to produce a shortlist.

The researchers tested 240 in the laboratory, and found nine potential antibiotics. One of them was the incredibly potent antibiotic abaucin.

Laboratory experiments showed it could treat infected wounds in mice and was able to kill A. baumannii samples from patients.]]></description>

The researchers hope to utilise microbes that have naturally evolved to absorb CO2 as an efficient way of removing the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Ending the burning of fossil fuels is critical in ending the climate crisis, but most scientists agree CO2 will also need to be sucked from the air to limit future damage.

The new microbe, a cyanobacterium, was discovered in September in volcanic seeps near the Italian island of Vulcano, where the water contains high levels of CO2. The researchers said the bug turned CO2 into biomass faster than any other known cyanobacteria.]]></description>

Our continued survival depends on the continuation of Earth’s present state without any nasty bumps along the way. We are complex lifeforms with complex needs. We are entirely dependent on other organisms for all our food and the very air we breathe. The collapse of Earth’s ecosystems is the collapse of our life-support systems. Replicating everything Earth offers us on another planet, on timescales of a few human lifespans, is simply impossible.]]></description>

Good thing Hal Alper’s chemical engineering lab at the University of Texas is on the job.  In the April 27 issue of Nature, they report on an enzyme they developed called FAST-PETase.  Designed with the help of artificial intelligence, it degrades untreated postconsumer PET not in centuries, but in days.  And this can be done at temperatures of 50°C and below, where many types of bacteria can thrive. ]]></description>

The team worked at night when the laboratories were otherwise deserted. They succeeded and reconstructed a live virus. It was astonishingly virulent: injected into mice, it replicated at a rate that after four days produced a viral load 39,000 times higher than other influenza strains.

About 4.5 billion years ago, the tiny organisms chewed up so much carbon and sunlight and spat out so much oxygen, they made Earth habitable for animals like us.

“We owe a great debt to these creatures,” Espelie told us. “Cyanobacteria are capable of doing all of the things we need at the moment, which is sequestering CO2 and producing more oxygen.”

Cameron’s research is about understanding that carbon-fixing mechanism and finding ways to use it to reverse some of the damage our species has wrought on the environment. Work like this has already led to a new kind of building material, “bio-cement,” which is grown with bacteria into cinderblocks and skips the intense emissions that come with making regular cement. Cameron said scientists are also thinking about how to use cyanobacteria’s talents to "supercharge" plants' ability to absorb carbon dioxide.]]></description>

    <dc:creator>msszczep</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[As we learn more and more about cancer, we begin to find characteristics of cancer cells that betray their identity in a way we can attack.  One example: Many types of cancer cells have a specific mutation in a protein called IDH1 that normal cells don’t have.  The mutation in that protein changes its structure enough that you can induce antibodies to go after it but leave the normal protein — and hence normal cells — alone.

Researchers based in Heidelberg, Germany, led by Michael Platten, have done just that, as they reported March 24 in Nature.  They developed a brain cancer vaccine, and the first real tests in humans show that brain tumors are being infiltrated by T cells programmed to go after this protein, and in most cases the progression of the disease is being halted.

Because the difference is much starker when political parties are added to the filter. Fully 41% of Republicans are a solid “no” on the vaccine. Another 15% are unsure. Compare that to Democrats where just 5% are no and 7% are unsure. White Democrats are even more likely that Black Democrats to say “yes” to vaccine.

That 44% difference on accepting a vaccine means that Republicans have a bigger difference with Democrats on this issue than they do on multiple major issues. Just as happened with masks, being vaccinated for COVID-19 has become an issue so politicized, that a majority of Republicans are unwilling to take a basic step to protect themselves from a deadly disease. Refusing vaccination has become another inexplicable shibboleth of the right.

The overall result of this is that a quarter of all American adults are currently a “no” on COVID-19 vaccination, and another 11% are unsure. So even as President Biden makes vaccine available to every American adult, it seems entirely possible that a third of those adults will pass. MIT biologists have now found a possible answer to this longstanding question. In a study appearing in Molecular Cell, they showed that this metabolic pathway, known as fermentation, helps cells to regenerate large quantities of a molecule called NAD+, which they need to synthesize DNA and other important molecules. Their findings also account for why other types of rapidly proliferating cells, such as immune cells, switch over to fermentation. ]]></description>

However, the impact on viral spread and vaccine efficacy remains to be defined. Here, we engineer the D614G mutation in the USA-WA1/2020 strain and characterize its effect. D614G enhances replication on human lung epithelial cells and primary human airway tissues through an improved infectivity of virions. Hamsters infected with the G614 variant produced higher infectious titers in the nasal washes and trachea, but not lungs, confirming clinical evidence that the D614G mutation enhances viral loads in the upper respiratory tract of COVID-19 patients and may increases transmission. Sera from D614-infected hamsters exhibit modestly higher neutralization titers against G614 virus than against D614 virus, indicating that (i) the mutation may not reduce the ability of vaccines in clinical trials to protect against COVID-19 and (ii) therapeutic antibodies should be tested against the circulating G614 virus. Together with clinical findings, our work underscores the importance of this mutation in viral spread, vaccine efficacy, and antibody therapy.]]></description>

This virus carries the moniker RaTG13. It is about 96 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2, but that four percentage point difference represents decades of evolutionary divergence, possibly in a different population of bats. In other words, RaTG13 and our nemesis bug are not the same virus; they are like cousins who have lived all their adult lives in separate towns.]]></description>
