In this episode of Movement Memos, host Kelly Hayes talks with Solnit about hope, backlash, political memory, and why history can help us understand our own power. Their conversation explores feminism, climate grief, authoritarianism, misogyny, interdependence, and why the right’s push to roll back hard-won freedoms is also a reaction to how much movements have already changed the world.

Empires have risen and failed before, but to my knowledge no state has ever chosen to kill its own power, and succeeded with such rapidity.

It is hard to see this clearly. Even as we oppose individual Trump adventures, we hope that in some way they are based on some understanding of the national interest. They are not. To get the perspective we need to see the nature of this anti-strategic self-slaughter, it will help to consider thirteen traditional bases of state power.

All Goliaths, however, contain the seeds of their own demise, he says: “They are cursed and this is because of inequality.” Inequality does not arise because all people are greedy. They are not, he says. The Khoisan peoples in southern Africa, for example, shared and preserved common lands for thousands of years despite the temptation to grab more.

Instead, it is the few people high in the dark triad who fall into races for resources, arms and status, he says. “Then as elites extract more wealth from the people and the land, they make societies more fragile, leading to infighting, corruption, immiseration of the masses, less healthy people, overexpansion, environmental degradation and poor decision making by a small oligarchy. The hollowed-out shell of a society is eventually cracked asunder by shocks such as disease, war or climate change.”

History shows that increasing wealth inequality consistently precedes collapse, says Kemp, from the Classical Lowland Maya to the Han dynasty in China and the Western Roman empire. He also points out that for the citizens of early rapacious regimes, collapse often improved their lives because they were freed from domination and taxation and returned to farming. “After the fall of Rome, people actually got taller and healthier,” he says.

---

“First and foremost, you need to create genuine democratic societies to level all the forms of power that lead to Goliaths,” he says. That means running societies through citizen assemblies and juries, aided by digital technologies to enable direct democracy at large scales. History shows that more democratic societies tend to be more resilient, he says.

“If you’d had a citizens’ jury sitting over the [fossil fuel companies] when they discovered how much damage and death their products would cause, do you think they would have said: ‘Yes, go ahead, bury the information and run disinformation campaigns’? Of course not,” Kemp says.

When archaeologists opened King Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt in the 1920s, the unexpected deaths among members of the excavation team that followed sparked rumors of a “pharaoh’s curse.” Decades later, doctors speculated that fungal spores may have contributed to those deaths. Now, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have found a new way to harness that fungus: using it to treat leukemia.

Detailing their findings in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, the scientists isolated a new class of molecules from Aspergillus flavus, a toxic crop fungus linked to infamous deaths following the excavations of ancient tombs. After the chemicals were modified, the resulting compound showed “promising” cancer-killing properties that rivaled FDA-approved drugs when tested against leukemia cells, according to a press release, opening new frontiers for fungal medicines.

Eventually, many will realize that he’s lied to them. Perhaps they’ll lose their jobs because of his economic policies, or see law-abiding friends and family deported because of his immigration policies. Perhaps their children will suffer from measles because of his health policies. Whatever the case, when their moment of realization comes, we must be ready to embrace them, and to weep with them for what they’ve lost. If there’s one thing that I learned while writing my book, it’s that effective resistance to the far right is never just about defeating the enemy.

The oligarch Donald Trump, in auctioning himself and American government to the highest bidder, may well match or surpass the stew of corruption that Washington created during the Gilded Age. That’s on him. But it’s on the rest of us that over 50 years, through economic policies that coddled the rich under both Democrats and Republicans, American wealth concentrated to such a degree that a Trump presidency—make that two Trump presidencies—was not only possible, but perhaps inevitable.

We have the power to stop, through more sensible tax and regulatory policies and a resurgence of union organizing, the torrent of wealth flowing upward to billionaires. I worry a lot about what will happen if we don’t act soon. Many people fear an abrupt end to democracy under Trump. I don’t, especially. What I do fear, though, is that unless we find a way to correct the wealth-based power imbalance that gave us Trump in the first place, our democracy will flicker out more gradually. To paraphrase Louis Brandeis: We can keep our democracy, or we can hatch our first trillionaire. We really can’t do both.

Public opinion shifted, elected officials began considering our demands, investments in community safety increased, and we saw more radical budgets and policy proposals than ever before. Since the Minneapolis ballot amendment placing the police department under the jurisdiction of a department of public safety did not pass in 2021, many would say that Defund failed. They could not be more wrong. On that day, 62,000 people in Minneapolis voted for a different vision of safety; that was 42% of the vote and more people than voted for the mayor, who opposed the amendment.

That many people imagining something different for public safety is a huge win for our movement, as it is evidence of abolition’s growing popularity with the public. Key pieces of M4BL’s omnibus bill, the Breathe Act, were introduced in Congress and inspired legislation across the country. We forced what was widely considered a fringe leftist position into the mainstream, making it a viable political stance. We were the spark that ignited protests around the world, from the UK to Indonesia, Colombia to South Africa, enraged as much by the murder of George Floyd here as they were by the deadly police-inflicted violence being committed in their home countries.

Through the organizing of Black movement’s Defund campaign, we won over $840m in direct cuts from US police departments and at least $160m in investments in community services. More than 20 major cities reduced their police budgets in some form, and in 25 cities, officials removed police from schools.

Some look at the landscape today, where fascism is tightening its grip on our civil and human rights, and think this must mean this fight was lost. But if you’re seeing it that way, you’re not thinking big enough. The systems we fight are centuries in the making, and the power they’ve amassed won’t be torn down by one summer of protest. Every major win Black movement has had, from the abolition of slavery to the civil rights movement and beyond, was decades in the making through sustained organizing, strategy, and powerbuilding. It required persevering through the vicious backlash of American white supremacy, capitalism and other ills. The same is true now.

The disappearance of high-quality empirical evidence means not only fewer rebuttals of right-wing dogmas, but also a bigger market for wellness pseudoscience and other scams—such as Kennedy’s imbecilic suggestion to treat the growing measles outbreak in the Southwest with cod-liver oil. America under Trump is rejecting one of the most effective health-care infrastructures in human history and embracing woo-woo nonsense on par with medieval doctors measuring the four humors.

The book burnings of the past had physical limitations; after all, only the books themselves could be destroyed. The Trumpist attack on knowledge, by contrast, threatens not just accumulated knowledge, but also the ability to collect such knowledge in the future. Any pursuit of forbidden ideas, after all, might foster political opposition. Better for Americans to be as gullible and easily manipulated as the people who buy brain pills from right-wing podcasts, use ivermectin to treat COVID, or believe that vaccines are “weapons of mass destruction.” This purge will dramatically impair the ability to solve problems, prevent disease, design policy, inform the public, and make technological advancements. Like the catastrophic loss of knowledge in Western Europe that followed the fall of Rome, it is a self-inflicted calamity. All that matters to Trumpists is that they can reign unchallenged over the ruins.

We learn from each other—those who have long shouldered systematic oppression continue to defy it in creative ways, proving that joy is both an act of resistance and the fuel that sustains it.

I’ve learned not to think of resistance as a sprint or even a marathon. It’s a relay. We rest, we care for each other. We pass the baton, and we keep going. The 3.5% rule shows we don’t need a majority—just a small, committed group to spark meaningful change.

So now we face the real question: Are we willing to act? Are we willing to build and expand our communities of resistance?

Because no one is coming to save us. We can’t put our faith in politicians or institutions that have already failed so many. Overwhelm helps no one; we’re not meant to do everything, and certainly not alone. But we do have to save ourselves—together—using vigilance, solidarity, and relentless imagination. This is our moment to rise or risk losing what remains of our freedoms.

Protest is not an end in itself. Tactics require larger long-term power-building strategies. Absent strategy, protest can sometimes still hold some short-term strategic value (eg, showing that dissent exists), but if we want to accomplish more than a flash in the pan – if we genuinely intend to shape history, as powerful movements before us have done – then we need to figure out what to do after the protest ends and everyone goes home.

The key is organization. Organizations transform episodic moments of outrage into sustained campaigns that can win concrete victories. Without organization, we’re no match for the powerful forces we’re up against. It’s no accident that the five decades when labor unions and other participatory organizations have declined are the same decades when capital consolidated control of our political system and inequality grew worse and worse.

To rebuild people power, we need to build organizations with structure, leadership development and capacity for sustained campaigns and struggle. There are all kinds of organizations: labor unions, place-based (local and statewide), issue-based, faith and congregation-based, and more (check out the list of partner organizations that helped plan the 5 April “Hands Off!” protests). If you’re showing up to the protest as a lone individual, let it be your on-ramp to longer-term collective action. Figure out where you fit in, what capacity you can add, what skills you can develop, how much time you can give. Even just a few hours a month, when multiplied by millions, can amount to a formidable force – the kind of people power we need to defeat authoritarianism and oligarchy.

For now, America still has a functioning electoral system, democratic institutions that have endured for centuries rather than decades, and a diverse, vibrant civil society. But as Putin showed, constitutions can be amended or worked around; Trump is already musing about a third term. I think, on the contrary, that they may well be the kernel of one of America’s most important mass movements.

My only fear is that people will channel their energies into the 2026 midterms and the Democratic Party and stop there. The Democrats are corrupt and bear some of the blame for the state of the nation. Any popular movement needs to demand change not only in Republican policies but also in Democratic ones.

Many underestimate resistance to the current Republican administration because they view resistance through a narrow lens. The 2017 Women’s March in particular — immediate in its response, massive in its scope and size — may inform collective imaginations about what the beginning of a resistance movement should look like during Trump 2.0.

In fact, our research shows that street protests today are far more numerous and frequent than skeptics might suggest. Although it is true that the reconfigured Peoples’ March of 2025 — held on Jan. 18 — saw lower turnout than the 2017 Women’s March, that date also saw the most protests in a single day for over a year. And since Jan. 22, we’ve seen more than twice as many street protests than took place during the same period eight years ago.

But we should also not overstate the power of the Right. They screw up too and the Trump administration is gonna screw up too, and that might make openings for things to happen. It may be that splitting the DOGE stuff from Trump himself might expose the relationship between oligarchy and white supremacy that Musk embodies.

Dan and I have been pointing this out for a decade now and many people didn’t want to hear that there’s a multiracial Right. That made it almost impossible to have worthwhile conversations. Finally, over the last year, it’s become a subject that can’t be ignored. People are trying to wrestle with what this means now, because there’s no avoiding it.

I truly appreciate and admire that Steven Levitsky, in his interview with New York Magazine, doesn’t feel the need to play savvy observer who is never surprised by anything. He admits that until very recently, he and co-author Lucan Way didn’t think competitive authoritarianism was even a realistic option in the United States: “We’d talked about it, but we always came to the conclusion that no, it would never really happen.” And now, mere weeks after they published a piece they didn’t think they would have to write, even that warning seems too tame. That is something we must all grapple with: For many years, the radicalization of the Right has consistently outpaced what even critical observers expected. Now the speed and scope of the authoritarian transformation and destruction of the system over the past two months have gone beyond what some of the most insightful observers thought likely. That means we must recalibrate what we expect going forward. “They are not going to go *that* far” has been proven wrong over and over again. The idea that “they won’t be able to do this” seems similarly unfounded. The political conflict isn’t over, nor is the outcome determined, or democracy destined to be extinguished for good. But let’s finally discard whatever notion of “It cannot happen here” is still floating around. It is all happening right now.

A new series of attacks on immigrants and people of color. Even as someone who expected things to get bad fast, the level of cruelty and destruction being wrought by Donald Trump and the unelected Elon Musk is staggering.

And it feels unstoppable.

That's why I've spent so much time lately learning about those that lived under the thumb of the KKK in the '20s. The speed with which the group grew, the influence it held, the mainstream embrace it received, and the fear it spread—I think about how impossible it must have felt to imagine that their influence would ever ebb.

And I think about people like George Dale—there were many like him—who, despite it feeling impossible, and despite paying incredible personal cost, kept fighting anyway.

And they won.

And I'm convinced that if we take action, we get to write some of the chapters and maybe revise or erase some of what they're trying to impose.

A huge portion of the American public and the world already regards their actions alarm or horror or fury, and that matters. We're already seeing revolts inside the federal government--some of them undoubtedly invisible to us, but the drama late last week in New York made a huge impression on the legal world and not a good one. Seven attorneys in a row resigned rather than carry out the Justice Department's utterly corrupt quid pro quo arrangement to let New York Mayor Eric Adams off from corruption charges in return for his cooperation with the administration's attacks on immigrants. The extortion and corruption were clear, and with them the administration further antagonized those who understand and care about the US justice system and the rule of law and some who administer it.

That's what political scientist Erica Chenoweth told me when I asked them if we could have a conversation (by email, below in full) about the current constitutional crisis/coup attempt and what we can do about it. Chenoweth is a hugely influential scholar of nonviolent social change, best known for their empirical research that not only documents what makes civil resistance work but demonstrates that it works, often extremely effectively. They direct the Nonviolent Action Lab, which studies how people have built movements and developed strategies to resist authoritarianism successfully and documents how nonviolence can be effective. The term “Social Self-Defense” is borrowed from the struggle against the authoritarian regime in Poland 40 years ago. In the midst of harsh repression, Polish activists formed a loose network to provide financial, legal, medical, and other help to people who had been persecuted by the police or unjustly dismissed from their work. Calling themselves the Committee for Social Self-Defense (KOR), they aimed to fight “political, religious, and ideological persecution”; to “oppose breaches of the law”; to “provide help for the persecuted”; to “safeguard civil liberties”; and to defend “human and civil rights.” KOR organized free trade unions to defend the rights of workers and citizens. Its members, who insisted on operating openly in public, were soon blacklisted, beaten, and imprisoned. They nonetheless persisted, and nurtured many of the networks, strategies, and ideas that came to fruition in the gigantic Solidarity union—and ultimately in the dissolution of repressive regimes in Poland and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

Skocpol’s discussion called to mind one of my other favorite social and historical analysts, Karl Polanyi.

Writing about the rise of fascism in the 1930s, Polanyi observed that the German industrialists and plutocrats of that era opted to take their chances with Hitler rather than make common cause with anti-Nazi social democrats. When push came to shove, economic elites were all too willing to sacrifice political democracy. And until Hitler’s disastrous military miscalcuations wrecked it all and left Germany in smoldering ruins, German industry and finance profited handsomely from their alliance with the Nazis.

Ancient Japan, I argue in my new book History for Tomorrow, offers inspiration for creating the deeply sustainable society we so urgently need today. Humanity's material footprint is almost double what the planet can safely sustain: we are using up the resources of nearly two planet Earths annually. Just think of the e-waste mountains, the biodiversity loss, the oceans polluted with microplastics, the deforestation to graze the cattle needed to feed our insatiable hunger for meat. What's more, most of this ecological overshoot is driven by the consumers of wealthy nations. The rich are devouring the world.

Edo was different. Partly due to the government's policy of not trading with outside nations, there was a scarcity of key resources like cotton and timber. The result was that Edo was a city without waste. Almost everything was reused, repaired, repurposed or in the last instance recycled – what we would today call a circular economy.

As humanity faces a future of uncertainty, we would be wise to look backwards as we seek to chart a way forwards.

What can the history of slave revolts teach us about the power of rebellion to tackle the climate crisis? How might understanding the origins of capitalism spark ideas for bringing AI under control? What could we learn from eighteenth century Japan for creating regenerative economies today, or from the coffee houses of Georgian London for taming social media?

Leading social philosopher Roman Krznaric unearths fascinating insights and inspiration from the last 1000 years of world history that could help us confront the most urgent challenges of the twenty-first century. From bridging the inequality gap and reducing the risks of genetic engineering, to reviving our faith in democracy and avoiding ecological collapse, History for Tomorrow shows that history is not simply a means of understanding the past but a way of reimagining our relationship with the future. Krznaric reveals how, time and again, societies have risen up, often against the odds, to tackle challenges and overcome crises. History offers a vision of radical hope that could turn out to be our most vital tool for surviving and thriving in the turbulent decades ahead.
