mozzarellaRecently, while reminiscing about restaurants, someone told me a funny story about a family waiting for their dinner, and then, bam. A ceiling fan hit the entire tray full of food. Tacos and bits of guacamole land on other tables, on faces, inside purses, and queso splatters the walls. Everyone in shock, considering themselves lucky if the quesadilla shrapnel flew past them.

but beyond that i really dig the idea that trail workers should be considered 'essential'. not just because i enjoy them regularly myself (along with the occasional dig days when time lines up). but this lockdown has really driven home my beef with NYC's lack of greenspace. i realize this was a pre-existing condition, but regardless feel upset over things like a new entrance being built in prospect park - which so far involves severing a continuous natural ridge (with a well used trail running atop it) so that it could be paved into a shitty promenade.
a nice stretch of natural land, to be interrupted abruptly, scattering a sense of nature to remind you you're in a city again. "just what New York City needs - more pavement" -- i joked with a guy and his two kids who were riding their mountain bikes with us one day after he asked me if our little trail system would remain in the future.
My thoughts on why the park would be so careless with such a valuable resource as unspoiled nature? Just because there's money in a budget that needs to be spent doesn't mean it should be for unnecessary "improvements". Also, if you're trying to displace a minority community of homosexuals, maybe actually spending time in these places instead of blowing them up is a better first step. Although somehow the actual users of the space have managed to co-exist for years now, maybe at the ground level is where the answers already are.

mozzarella“I was actually able to write Neuromancer because I didn’t know anything about computers,” he says. “I knew literally nothing. What I did was deconstruct the poetics of the language of people who were already working in the field. I’d stand in the hotel bar at the Seattle science fiction convention listening to these guys who were the first computer programmers I ever saw talk about their work. I had no idea what they were talking about, but that was the first time that I ever heard the word ‘interface’ used as a verb. And I swooned. Wow, that’s a verb. Seriously, poetically that was wonderful.]]>writing via:popularhttps://pinboard.in/u:mozzarella/b:8f66b779c425/Why I Keep a Research Blog2020-01-14T18:43:21+00:00
