While opinions have been mixed on Destiny, Bungie's first post-Halo video game, most impressions and reviews of the game thus far—including our own—have at least praised its online stability. That's no small feat for an always-online game, especially in its first week, but error reports are beginning to accumulate from Destiny players across all four of the game's consoles. There's a reason for that: Bungie launched its "shared world shooter" without much of a customer support structure in place. Eight days after launch, users who haven't been able to connect—including one of Ars Technica's own contributors, who still can't get online with an Xbox 360 copy of the game—have exhausted all of the suggestions listed at help.bungie.net. At that point, those users are directed to visit Bungie's forums, "staffed by community mentors who are here to help you." The end result is a funneling of complaints to a forum whose topics are broken down not by official categories but by hashtags.

Chemistry of Cast Iron Seasoning: A Science-Based How-To

In a previous post, I illustrated how I cleaned and reseasoned an antique cast iron popover pan. This was my first attempt, and my seasoning technique was somewhat haphazard because I couldn’t find consistent, science-based advice. I used a combination of organic avocado oil and strained drippings from organic bacon. This worked pretty well on the popover pan, which doesn’t have a polished surface. But the smooth inner surface of a skillet showed an unevenness of color and texture, and the seasoning wasn’t hard enough. It was too easily marred by cooking utensils or scraping against oven racks. I wanted to understand the chemistry behind seasoning so I’d know how to fix this, but there is nothing that addresses this issue directly. A Web page on cast iron posted by someone similarly obsessed with the science gave me two crucial clues, the phrases “polymerized fat” and “drying oil”. From there I was able to find the relevant scientific literature and put the pieces together.

A few weeks ago, I’d have said that was an extreme analogy, but given the events of the past week, it’s become clear that it’s actually really fucking appropriate. You literally strip away the flesh – the content of a piece of prose – to show the bones – the non-content related language which carries and supports the flesh. By filling in the blanks with your own content, you get to see how the text is structured. You can try out different academic ‘voices’ using different skeletons to see which feels comfortable. You then get to understand the various syntactical moves that are at work. You can see in the skeleton how academic writers actually establish their authority by making evaluative, comparative and synthesising statements.

By visualizing information, our brains can synthesize and retain content more effectively, increasing its impact. But if data isn’t properly visualized, it can do more damage than good. The wrong presentation can diminish the data’s message or, worse, misrepresent it entirely. That’s why good data visualization relies on good design. And it’s about more than just choosing the right chart type. It’s about presenting information in a way that is easy to understand and intuitive to navigate, making the viewer do as little legwork as possible. Of course, not all designers are data visualization experts, which is why much of the visual content we see is, well, less than stellar. It’s an artifact of history, an idea, forged in time; it’s the manufacture of a moment of upsetting and edgy uncertainty. Transfixed by change, it’s blind to continuity. It makes a very poor prophet. The upstarts who work at startups are told that they should be reckless and ruthless. Their investors tell them that the world is a terrifying place, moving at a devastating pace. Their job appears to be to convince a generation of people who want to do good and do well to learn, instead, remorselessness. Forget rules, obligations, your conscience, loyalty, a sense of the commonweal. If you start a business and it succeeds, Linkner advises, sell it and take the cash. Don’t look back. Never pause.

Have you ever been to a thrift store (think Goodwill or Salvation Army) and noticed that they usually carry a small selection of landscape paintings? Artists Chris McMahon and Thryza Segal decided to inject a little fun into these discarded works and give them a second life by adding monsters to the scenic landscapes. The trick is to match the paint originally used (e.g., acrylic or oil) and try to blend the monsters into the original scene as if they were always there. It can be a challenge if the original is too textured or old but the results (below) speak for themselves. It’s a fun exploration and one the Sifter enjoyed. Hope you do as well!

Currently at RMIT we receive very limited statistics about Blackboard usage, let alone analytics – only the most rudimentary statistics are available, basically – hits per student per course. With such limited data on Blackboard use, we started thinking that rather than focusing on what is not being done, how about focusing on what is being done?

It also gives you a few tricks about drawing techniques with Illustrator and handling vector based icons in Photoshop. Vector shapes are core parts of the next generation web but without taking the time to optimise them for screen usage. It almost doesn’t matter if they’re not SVGs or high resolution images. The dossier giant has rivaled Beyonce in spreading itself around the world, except it exhorts websites and apps to “put a Facebook button on it” instead of a ring. It has steadily colonized the Web and app-o-sphere with “Like buttons,” “conversion pixels,” and Facebook log-in options, which all feed information back to Facebook about what its users are up to when they’re not on Facebook. Now Facebook is planning to start using some of that data flow to pepper its users with targeted ads. Facebook announced this week that it is going to start tracking the websites Facebook users visit and their activity on smartphone apps in order to target them with “better” ads. Of particular interest to me in the media coverage around the robust, new tracktastic ads, is seeing Facebook walk back previous promises not to do exactly what it’s about to do.

The Tzeentch contingent is led by the Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marine Chapter and supported by an assorted of cult models. The contingent is designed for the Black Legion army list. It is possible to make a small dedicated Thousand Sons army but there aren’t enough core models for anything but a small warband. The reaosn for this is that the Thousand Sons specialised army list is still in a lot of flux (at the time of writing). Once it stablizised I might paint up a few more models to bulk out the contingent. The cult formations make a decent sized stand-alone Lost and the Damned army.
