HAProxy, which stands for High Availability Proxy, is a popular open source software TCP/HTTP Load Balancer and proxying solution which can be run on Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. Its most common use is to improve the performance and reliability of a server environment by distributing the workload across multiple servers (e.g. web, application, database). It is used in many high-profile environments, including: GitHub, Imgur, Instagram, and Twitter.

In this tutorial, we will go over how to use HAProxy for SSL termination, for traffic encryption, and for load balancing your web servers. We will also show you how to use HAProxy to redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS.

Native SSL support was implemented in HAProxy 1.5.x, which was released as a stable version in June 2014.

Load balancing can improve the performance, availability, and resilience of your environment.

Layer 7 reverse proxying and load balancing is suitable for your site if you want to have a single domain name that serves multiple applications, as the http requests can be analyzed to decide which application should receive the traffic.

In this tutorial, we will teach you how to use HAProxy as a layer 4 load balancer for your WordPress servers--specifically the web application tier. Load balancing the application servers adds redundancy to your setup, which increases reliability in case of server failures or networking issues, and spreads the load across multiple servers for increased read performance. We are assuming that your setup includes a WordPress application server that connects to a separate MySQL database server (see the prerequisites for a tutorial on how to set that up).

Layer 4 load balancing is suitable for your site if you are only running a single web server application. If your environment is more complex (e.g. you want to run WordPress and a static web server on separate servers, with a single entry point), you will need to look into Application Layer (Layer 7) load balancing.

In this guide, we'll discuss how to configure a remote database server that your web server can connect to for dynamic content. We will be using WordPress as an example so that we have something to work with. We'll configure Nginx on our web server and then connect it to a MySQL database on a remote machine. In this tutorial, we will go over how to create and use child themes, and why using them is so important. (A special note for Elegant Themes customers only: If you are only looking to perform simple CSS changes to your theme, then you can use the Custom CSS box in ePanel instead of creating a child theme. For more in-depth changes that require editing php files, a child theme must be used.)

Decode supports link posts, where the title can be hyperlinked. To do this, first set the post format to "Link" and then add designate where the title should link to using a custom field entitled, title_url or url_title. I also have added support for quote posts. Quote marks are automatically added, so don't use them when composing a quote.

Decode's elegant sidebar is conveniently accessed by clicking or tapping on the much-loved hamburger icon. The sidebar can hold any number of widgets you choose. The side on which the sidebar and the hamburger icon are placed is customizable. You can also disable the sidebar if you choose.

Featured Images are also supported, allowing you to display large, beautiful images at the top of your posts.

Lastly, Decode has social icons in the header that can link to your Twitter, App.net, Facebook, or Google+ profile. These can be configured in the Customize menu as well.

Some people fear the command line. They view it as the deep, dark underbelly of their computer, far from the familiar comforts of the GUI. A place of great mystery where even the angels fear to tread.

But then there are others who appreciate the command line for what it is: a place of great power and usefulness. A place where the most tedious of tasks can be performed quickly and easily; where shortcuts and scripts abound to help out the most serious of developers.

In today’s tutorial, we’re going to crack open our Terminal program for a rather surprising reason: maintaining a WordPress site using wp-cli (short for WordPress Command Line Interface).

This tutorial is going to assume three things: you are using a Macintosh (although wp-cli works in any Unix-based environment), you have a means of cloning a GitHub repository (either through the command line git or through a GUI such as Tower or GitHub), and you have an installation of WordPress on your working machine. If you’ve got all three of those, you’re golden!

In addition, many frameworks provide additional features that can make your theme more powerful with less development time.

In the past year or two, responsive frameworks have become more popular. Since designing and developing responsive sites and themes can be highly time consuming, these frameworks can be a great resource.

In this post we’ll take a look at 15 of the best free WordPress theme frameworks and starter themes. There are also a number of outstanding premium options, but in this post we’ll focus on the free ones. Despite being free, these resources can be highly valuable.

I know there are plenty of articles about themes for WordPress and at tripwire magazine we have also published our share. The reason is simple – WordPress is awesome and it just gets better and better. Further there are new themes released and new designers and vendors entering the market every day. This is good for everyone using WordPress, but it has almost come to a point where the massive supply makes it hard to make a decision and filter the good themes from the bad ones. One option to get around this problem is to take a look at premium theme vendors as they typically have fewer, but very high quality themes that can be customized easily. In contrast you can go to the large theme directories and search for a theme that fits your requirements for look and feel. While this may be more time consuming it will not cost you a single dollar. As you can understand it isit is important to start searching using the sites that have good search capabilities, good previews and detailed descriptions of theme features. This article does not list a single WordPress theme, but it gives you an overview of some of the best premium theme vendors and free theme directories currently available. The article has been divided into two main sections – Premium Theme Vendors and Free Themes Directories. Make sure you check out the Coupon Code section at the bottom if you plan to buy a premium theme! You can also check out some of our list posts showcasing wordpress themes e.g. WordPress CMS themes, WordPress photography theme and WordPress photo theme.

WordPress users are in luck, since WordPress already has easy-to-use and extendable functions to give you a lot of power and flexibility in handling your website’s emails.

In order to create our own system, we will be doing four things. First, we will create a nice email template to use. We will then modify the mailer function so that it uses our new custom template. We will then modify the actual text of some of the built-in emails. Then we will proceed to hook our own emails into different events in order to send some custom emails. Let’s get started!

This will store static copies of pages accessed by users who don't require any dynamic content generation (e.g., users who haven't logged in or posted a comment) which should make up the vast majority of your visitors if your site is getting a lot of traffic. These static copies are set up on the filesystem so that they are easily accessible via some simple rewrite rules, so if the cache file already exists the web server can just serve it directly - the request never needs to be passed to PHP.

It can easily be a time consuming and difficult job to find the best WordPress theme for a blog, site, web shop etc. There are tons of cool themes available for WordPress both free and premium. This is one of the main reasons for its dominating market share and new awesome themes are released all the time! The huge availability of both free and premium themes for WordPress may however make it a challenge to find the best theme for the site you are building.

A good place to start is to decide if you are willing to pay for the theme. In many cases this pays off long term when you need support. E.g. when WordPress needs to be upgraded. Most WordPress sites and blogs start op with a free or premium theme that have been altered a bit to make it distinctive. This can be by changing colors, header graphics etc. There are many websites dedicated to help you find the WordPress theme that is best for you. This is a good place to start.

High-Performance WordPress with W3 Total Cache and Nginx | Eli Van Zoeren

I recently set up a new server to host website for my clients. I took the opportunity to re-think how I have been serving sites and optimize the whole software stack for better performance. Rather than the usual LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) stack, I decided to go with LEMP, switching Apache out for Nginx. Although most common PHP applications recommend Apache, they will actually run faster on Nginx. Usually all you just need to do is translate the .htaccess file rules into Nginx’s configuration file.

My first order of business once the new server was set up was to get WordPress running and to optimize its performance. The first few sites that would be going on the new hardware were using WordPress so although I will be going through a similar process for Expression Engine soon, WordPress was my test-case.

I always run the W3 Total Cache plugin with my WordPress installations. By storing copies of each rendered page to disk (as well as many other optimizations), W3TC dramatically decreases the load on the server under heavy traffic. This is particularly the case with the Nginx configuration I am about to show you, which lets most requests be handled by Nginx alone. Nginx was designed first and foremost as a reverse proxy, so it serves static files almost instantly and with minimal processor or memory usage. There are a number of sample configurations around the web for running WordPress with W3TC on Nginx, but none of them quite did it for me. For one thing, they all rely heavily on if statements, which are evil. So here is my take on it….
