I’ve been using the Unix command line since 1983 and like most software developers, the Terminal app is a permanent fixture in my Dock. Over the years I’ve learned a lot of things that make working in this environment more productive, but even old dogs like me are constantly learning new tricks.

As much as I love them, these long “trick lists” on Stack Overflow have a problem: they’re poorly organized with little narrative describing why you’d want to use a technique. This long homage to the command line is my attempt to remedy that situation.

Note: I originally learned the shell using the newfangled csh (which was a huge improvement over the original sh.) When I first started using Mac OS X, I tweaked it to use tcsh because that’s what I knew and loved. Over time, I gave up using these tweaks and started using the default shell: bash. The following examples assume that you’re doing the same.

I’ve spent my free time the last few days playing with Übersicht, but I found enough time to try out Spillo. It’s a new Pinboard client for Mac, and it’s not bad at all.

This isn’t a review, though. This is just a little helper for people who might also be using (or playing with) Spillo.

My first wish was that it had a menubar-only mode. Just an icon in the menu bar and a hotkey to show the window or create a bookmark. You can close the window and use the bookmark creator without activating the app, though, so I let it go.

Then I looked at browser integration and found that they only offered extensions, not bookmarklets. The extensions only launch a prepopulated “Add Bookmark” window from the app. If they offered a popup with search, tagging, etc., within the browser, I’d be fine with it. But for this, I’d rather have a bookmarklet that I can assign to a hotkey and customize as needed.

I dug apart the Safari extension and figured out the URL scheme. Then I just added the ability to use text selected on the page to populate the description, with a fallback to the meta description for the page (the extension’s default).

The goal of this blog post is to produce a never booted installation of OS X Mountain Lion, in a VMDK, which can be used as a template in VMware vSphere vCenter 5.1.

The reason for doing this, is that when a OS X installation is done the normal way, using the Installation GUI, then on the first boot of the newly installed machine there is created a bunch of machine specific files and items.
These machine specific files and items, e.g. the Local Kerberos Key Distribution Center (or LKDC), needs to be cleaned out, if the installation is going to be used as a template, either in VMware vSphere or using traditional image deployment techniques.

Instead of doing the installation using the normal GUI procedures, it is possible to install OS X into an empty DMG image file, and therefor the installed version of OS X is never booted, and thereby the machine specific files and items are never created. Leaving you with a pristine and untouched version of OS X, ready to be booted for the very first time, when deployed.

During this blog post I will walk you through how to do all this, with detailed instructions and screenshots.

Working on a site with a few hundred OS X machines, manually altering each computer's configuration can become very tedious, very fast. Especially when dealing with printers. I had issues whereby I would sometimes need to set up a number of computers with a new printer, and then remove it later. Add to that, I have printers constantly spitting things out because people hit Print a few too many times and clog up the queues. Fortunately, I managed to come across a few Unix commands which, using ssh or ideally Apple Remote Desktop (via the ever-useful 'Send UNIX command' function), can reduce jobs of many minutes, even hours, into seconds.

However, there is still confusion surrounding the setting of printer options from the command line, as a poster to Debian bugs pointed out back in 2006: lpoptions documentation doesn’t. After doing some testing, here’s the two main takewaways:

If you use lpadmin and specify options with “-o” the PPD is altered and OS X will recognize the options for the printer.
However, if you setup the printer using lpadmin without any options and later use lptoptions to set the options, they are not written to the PPD and the GUI is unaware of the printer’s options.
