Installing OS X Yosemite is as easy as downloading the installer from the Mac App Store and getting started. But there are times when you might want to create a bootable drive to run the Yosemite installer from, instead. Follow these instructions for details.

Installing Yosemite from a bootable drive comes in handy if you want to do a clean install - wiping your hard drive and installing a fresh copy of the operating system, for example, or if you're installing the software on multiple Macs and don't want to have to download it each time.

To do this, you'll need the Yosemite installer and you'll also need a bootable disk. You can use a USB thumbdrive with 8 GB or more storage capacity or an external USB hard disk; either will work just fine.

To download the Yosemite installer, click here. The installer is free, though you'll need to be signed in to the Mac App Store to download it. After it downloads, the installer app may automatically launch. Quit out of the installer if it does.

You'll need to make sure that external hard drive or USB drive is properly formatted for the Mac.

I’ve spent my free time the last few days playing with Übersicht, but I found enough time to try out Spillo. It’s a new Pinboard client for Mac, and it’s not bad at all.

This isn’t a review, though. This is just a little helper for people who might also be using (or playing with) Spillo.

My first wish was that it had a menubar-only mode. Just an icon in the menu bar and a hotkey to show the window or create a bookmark. You can close the window and use the bookmark creator without activating the app, though, so I let it go.

Then I looked at browser integration and found that they only offered extensions, not bookmarklets. The extensions only launch a prepopulated “Add Bookmark” window from the app. If they offered a popup with search, tagging, etc., within the browser, I’d be fine with it. But for this, I’d rather have a bookmarklet that I can assign to a hotkey and customize as needed.

I dug apart the Safari extension and figured out the URL scheme. Then I just added the ability to use text selected on the page to populate the description, with a fallback to the meta description for the page (the extension’s default).

A few weeks ago, while I was preparing my coverage of Apple’s Q2 2013 earnings call, I grew tired of my system to resize and rename images on OS X, so I rebuilt it from scratch using Automator, Name Mangler 3, and TextExpander.

When I create images for MacStories, I either keep them at a single size between 600 and 650 pixels, or use two separate versions: the original larger size, and a smaller one that links to the full version. In either case, images are uploaded to our CDN with Cyberduck, which I have been using for years and that has never failed me. Until last month, the process of duplicating the larger image and saving it to a smaller size was entirely manual – something that, I later realized, was surprising considering I try to automate as many aspects of my daily workflow as possible. I decided to fix this before the Apple earnings call because I knew Excel was going to export our charts as large PNGs – but, mostly, because it really didn’t make sense to keep on manually clicking menus and selecting sizes after all these years of writing for MacStories.

Working on a site with a few hundred OS X machines, manually altering each computer's configuration can become very tedious, very fast. Especially when dealing with printers. I had issues whereby I would sometimes need to set up a number of computers with a new printer, and then remove it later. Add to that, I have printers constantly spitting things out because people hit Print a few too many times and clog up the queues. Fortunately, I managed to come across a few Unix commands which, using ssh or ideally Apple Remote Desktop (via the ever-useful 'Send UNIX command' function), can reduce jobs of many minutes, even hours, into seconds.

However, there is still confusion surrounding the setting of printer options from the command line, as a poster to Debian bugs pointed out back in 2006: lpoptions documentation doesn’t. After doing some testing, here’s the two main takewaways:

If you use lpadmin and specify options with “-o” the PPD is altered and OS X will recognize the options for the printer.
However, if you setup the printer using lpadmin without any options and later use lptoptions to set the options, they are not written to the PPD and the GUI is unaware of the printer’s options.

Thanks to some JavaScript advice from a friend, I finally have it working! When you run the little app, you’re given the option to check the status of the Mac you’re on, or manually enter a Serial Number.

Then, it opens a page in Safari, submits the information (after a few seconds delay), and pulls up the response. Make sure that you wait when you run it, don’t think it’s not working just because it waits.

So thanks to Tim the Tool Man for his help, and enjoy the automation!

It’s pretty complex to describe, though, so I’ll probably end up leaving some holes in the story. As you may know, iOS 6 includes a handy Do Not Disturb feature, which can be turned on to disable notifications. It can even be set to automatically enable/disable itself at scheduled intervals. Mountain Lion also lets you disable Notification Center. Just open Notification Center and drag down to access a Show Alerts and Banners toggle switch. The only problem with HandBrake (on the Mac at least) is the lack of a real batch mode: the queue management is great, but you have to select the source files one by one.

Here comes HandBrakeBatch: a fully independent application which uses HandBrake video converter under the hood, and allows you to drag & drop a bunch of files at the same time, and convert them using any of the default HandBrake presets. With version 2.0, I have added the most requested feature: support for multiple audio languages and subtitles. Custom presets defined in HandBrake are fully supported as well.

Hardcore server nuts can fly through preferences and settings tweaks without ever touching a GUI. Then there are some things you can do in the Terminal that are just straight out important. This is likely one of the latter, though it does present a bit of a privacy issue. According to OS X Daily the Launch Services quarantine keeps a list of every file you’ve ever downloaded on your Mac, as that’s what triggers the warning dialog about opening files from the Internet. Oddly enough, even if you’ve disabled this in the command line, the database is still keeping track.
