Bandwidth-wise, images are hogs. They are the largest average web site payload (62%), and they are most often the content bottleneck. When images arrive, they come tripping onto the page, pushing other elements around and triggering a clumsy repaint. They come “chop chop chop chop chop down” or you get nothing until suddenly “boom!” out of nowhere there it is. We all know what I’m talking about when I say “chop chop down” and “boom” and it makes us a little bit sick, because we sense how much time we’ve lost of our precious, short lives, waiting for pictures to download.

How I Resize and Rename Images with Automator, Name Mangler, and TextExpander

A few weeks ago, while I was preparing my coverage of Apple’s Q2 2013 earnings call, I grew tired of my system to resize and rename images on OS X, so I rebuilt it from scratch using Automator, Name Mangler 3, and TextExpander.

When I create images for MacStories, I either keep them at a single size between 600 and 650 pixels, or use two separate versions: the original larger size, and a smaller one that links to the full version. In either case, images are uploaded to our CDN with Cyberduck, which I have been using for years and that has never failed me. Until last month, the process of duplicating the larger image and saving it to a smaller size was entirely manual – something that, I later realized, was surprising considering I try to automate as many aspects of my daily workflow as possible. I decided to fix this before the Apple earnings call because I knew Excel was going to export our charts as large PNGs – but, mostly, because it really didn’t make sense to keep on manually clicking menus and selecting sizes after all these years of writing for MacStories.

Apache PhotArk will be a complete open source photo gallery application including a content repository for the images, a display piece, an access control layer, and upload capabilities. The idea is to have a rigid design for the content repository with a very flexible display piece. The images in the content repository will be protected with granular access control.
Currently PhotArk application is designed as a Web 2.0 application that can be run standalone, or deployed to a Java EE Application Server such as Apache Tomcat. The PhotArk components are defined using the SCA programming model and Apache Tuscany is used as the SCA Runtime. There is also integration with Apache JackRabbit for the Content Repository..
PhotArk gallery currently allows you define a set of albums hosted locally, and also allows you to aggregate external albums exposed as feeds (e.g from Flickr or Picassa).
We are currently seeking help to enhance the development of the application and add new functionality to bring PhotArk to a first class photo gallery application.
