Rackspace Private Cloud, and OpenStack on its own, can be a formidable set of software to install. Rackspace Private Cloud uses Chef to deploy OpenStack, and while Chef itself has a high learning curve, its use does make deploying OpenStack easier and more scalable.

Despite this, I find a lot of installation confusion comes from how to setup the virtual machines. How many CPUs do I allocate? How much RAM do I allocate? How much storage should there be? How many NICs do I need and on what networks? Many people may give up at this point or attempt an install with incorrect virtual machine configurations which ruins their experience. However, Vagrant by Hashicorp makes it very easy to define the virtual machines all within a simple text file.

Before going on, I recommend your workstation to have at least 2 physical CPUs and 8GB of RAM. If your workstation does not meet these recommended specifications, you can lower the amount of vCPUs and RAM assigned to each virtual machine in the Vagrantfile with the added risk of running into problems due to low resources.

If you would rather not go through the installation step-by-step, I have created a Vagrantfile containing all of the same steps so all you have to run is vagrant up.

With so many services like iCloud and Dropbox getting hacked these days, it's no surprise that more people want to pull their data off the cloud. Instead of missing out on those great syncing features, though, you can create your own cloud storage service that you control with a service called ownCloud. With it, you'll get syncing files, notes, calendars, and more. The best part: it only takes about five minutes to get it set up.
OwnCloud is free and open source software that operates as a very simple way to set up your own syncing, Dropbox-like cloud storage system on your own server or web site. It's robust enough that it has replaced Dropbox for me in all except a few choice cases. It's also quick and easy to set up, and doesn't require advanced technical knowledge. OwnCloud is about as powerful as Dropbox, but it also allows people to make and share their own apps that run on ownCloud including text editors, task lists, and more. That means you can get a little more out of it then just file syncing if you want.

But I have to be honest, I was a tad intimidated by the complexity. There are several services required for OpenStack, including but not limited to Nova, Glance, Keystone, Horizon, and Cinder. All of these would normally have to be fetched from source, then configured to work together. Over time, OS packages have become available that would save me fetching these services from source, but the configuration tasks were still pretty significant.

Hopefully you’re already backing up all of your important files, and using version control on all your code, so getting your data back shouldn’t be a hurdle, but what about your development environment.

A lot goes into our coding environments: ruby versions, apache configurations, database configurations and data, and config files, and more. It’s easy to kill a whole day getting everything set up just right, but is there another way? I believe there is: just code on a server.

I’m not talking about using my FTP client to modify some PHP files that are live on production, that’s a recipe for disaster. But if you use a terminal based editor, like vim or emacs, it’s pretty easy to configure a computer on the internet that you can connect to via SSH and just work.
