My Jekyll build takes a while, and when I’m at my machine I like to know at a glance if a build is running. I’ve gone to great lengths with notifyutil and GeekTool to put status lights on my desktop. I do the same for multiple long-running tasks. I realized the other day, though, that Growl could do this very easily, and could be automated as part of a script or Rake task.

It’s simple: just post a sticky Growl notification with growlnotify and use osascript at the end of the script to clear it. In order for this to work, you have to be using Growl with its native notifications, not passing them to Notification Center1. You can pass an app name to the initial notification and then use Growl settings to pick a special theme and screen location for anything from that name.

Seeing Gabe's macros reminded me that I have wanted something like this for when I am recording the Impolite Company podcast. Gabe's macro enables and disables Time Machine, but I also want to enable and disable CrashPlan and Dropbox. Like Gabe, I have a tendency to forget to turn things back on, so I wanted to automate this as much as possible. Since I tend to only run Skype when I am actively recording a podcast, I decided to trigger my macros around the Skype.app either launching or quitting.

So I wrote two Keyboard Maestro macros: one for when Skype starts and one for when Skype quits.

Sometimes efficiency becomes the enemy. Because I'm now a believer in automating document filing via Hazel and OCR, I sometimes get myself in trouble. A case in point is my life insurance bill. It arrives every quarter. I used to scan it and then name it in my Action folder with a TextExpander snippet, which resulted in it getting sent off to a nested folder somewhere. At the same time I'd record an OmniFocus quick entry to pay the bill. It was all second nature. These days, I use a Hazel rule that looks at the contents of this invoice and names it and files it without me having to trouble to rename the file manually. Put simply, once I scan it, I never see it again unless I go looking for it. The problem is I keep forgetting to create the OmniFocus entry to pay the bill. That's bad. (Especially if I get hit by a bus, which would only add one more problem to cascading badness.) We can't have that.

I decided to create an AppleScript that automatically creates an OmniFocus task when this Hazel rule triggers. After a lot of head scratching, trial and error, and even some help from friends at the Omni Group and Ben Waldie (my AppleScript Sensei), I've cobbled one together. Here is a screenshot and the AppleScript code.

They are small and targeted tools you can use in almost any program to insert text or do something useful with the current selection. Select text and Google it or look it up in a dictionary. Select a mathematic expression, like "6 * 7", and calculate it. Just select text (or place the insertion point where you want it) and pick a service from the Services menu in the application menu.

Normally, you have to write services using Apple's Carbon or Cocoa frameworks, using languages like C, C++ or Objective-C. ThisService lets anyone with a basic handle on programming choose their own language (like AppleScript or Ruby) to write a service in, lowering the bar for entry, and making certain tasks easier by letting you use the right tool for that task.
