Attempts were made to import texts that communicated alternative worldviews and innovative ideas about sex and sexuality in an effort to renew British literature and culture; during the period translation appears as a force for cultural (trans)formation (Gentzler 2001:194) or as a reaction to a perceived "intellectual/cultural lack" (Ellis and Oakley-Brown 2001:5). At the same time, when texts contested the overarching patriarchal worldview of the British Empire during this period of (sociological) tensions at home and (colonial) contestations abroad, they were often perceived as threats to the preservation of the Victorian status quo, and socially sanctioned presses continued to refuse to publish them. In view of these constraints, it is reasonable to expect that all foreign texts would have been subjected to close censorial scrutiny. In fact such was not the case. Untranslated foreign texts circulated freely in Britain (Speirs 2003:85), but the same cannot be said for translated foreign texts. Writers such as André Theuriet and Octave Feuillet, whose novels had won morality prizes in France (Portebois 2003:66), were approved by British moral authorities. But novels that did not serve as innocent entertainment or that were socially disruptive and sexually explicit were condemned. Those who wished to publish the latter did so at the risk of being prosecuted. One alternative available to translators was clandestine publishing, at times financed completely or in part through the creation of a secret literary society made up of the publication's subscribers. émile Zola's writings which were censored in translation were published by such a society in the 1890s; similarly, Eastern sex manuals as well as two unexpurgated translations of the Arabian Nights were published by such societies in the 1880s.

In the disorienting interval of our pandemic confinement, museums, galleries, and other art organizations have responded to the shuttering of their brick-and-mortar venues by rushing to the internet and busily posting photos, streaming videos, holding Instagram Live chats, and running Zoom lectures. These offerings fill our feeds like advertisements for a future that has yet to be determined, makeshift placeholders for the public eye. What this uploading frenzy reveals is that the art world in 2020 imagines the internet much in the same way entertainment companies do, as a convenient mechanism for providing content to a dispersed audience. In this, museums and media conglomerates alike attempt to extend the twentieth-century model of centralized broadcasting as far as they can into the millennium, with minor interactive elements such as sharing, likes, and comments filigreeing their vast and variously monetized showcases of shovelware.

Two decades ago, when the World Wide Web was just beginning to become commercialized, online artists concerned themselves more with the new formal properties of the internet than its meager content, then only fitfully user-generated and as-yet unorganized by the dominance of Google’s search algorithms.

After decades of strategy sessions with Larry, I’m convinced that, like most AIDS activists, he thought images such as our 1987 Silence=Death poster simply fell from the sky. For some reason, images were disconnected from his own process as a rhetorician. Perhaps that’s just how it is for artists who use words to articulate their rage.

In my estimation, rage is not actually rhetorical: it’s sculptural. Once you activate rage, it becomes as solid as stone, and it then casts a shadow. The shadow is resistance. That was the most beautiful thing about Larry: the shadow of his resistance stretched out to the horizon, and it never stopped growing, not for one fucking second. Rest in rage, Larry Kramer.

We were dashing about with screwdrivers, trying to figure out how to disable the alarm.” The early internet’s most personable areas often felt that way because they were modeled on known places and personal histories, built by real-life friends, internet buddies, and occasionally ex-lovers. Before LambdaMOO contained the universe, it was a ranch house in California shared by three programmers and their roommates. Step One — Establish Assumptions
Based on briefings from U. S. Department of Energy personnel and contractors, we understand the following assumptions are to be made:
1. The repository will be closed after the proposed period of operation.
2. Only accidental intrusions are to be considered. That is, war, sabotage, terrorism, and similar activities are not to be addressed.
3. Active control will be maintained of the WIPP site during the period of use and for one hundred years following closure. Therefore, we can ignore this period in our analysis. We are to consider inadvertent intrusions over the 10,000 years following the end of active control.
4. Following the end of the period of active control, passive measures only will be taken to warn potential intruders. That is, whatever markers are used must not require any active maintenance after the period of active control ends.
We have also followed these added guidelines in our work:
5. The inherent danger in the radioactive materials will decay at currently projected rates.
6. No fantastic (although potentially possible) events will be considered. These include such things as
— Visits from extraterrestrials,
— Collisions with objects from space, and — Ability to revoke gravity.
7. The further we consider into the future, the greater the variety of possible scenarios.

Abstract
There is an appreciable distance between the biochemistry of being pregnant and the experience of recognizing oneself as pregnant—a speculative gap that technology can serve to narrow or widen depending on how one chooses to choreograph an ontological state. Conducting an outmoded pregnancy test with live Xenopus frogs, we probed the contours of this gap. As we took an antiquated bioassay out of medical archives, we conducted a performative experiment—an intervention that blurred the boundaries between performance art, science, and ethnography. Like queer enactments of gender, performative experiments exhibit the performativity of conventional science and thereby make scientific modes of knowledge production and claims available for critical inspection. Moving beyond the domain of human self-fashioning and debates about the ethics of animal experimentation, our experiment also considered speculation linking the Xenopus pregnancy test to the extinction of other frogs. Amphibian biologists once hypothesized that Xenopus frogs brought a pathogenic fungus out of Africa. We found that this outbreak narrative projected colonial and racial stereotypes into the domain of animals and limited the scope of the scientific imagination. DNA test kits enabled us to determine that the frogs used in our study were not carrying the pathogenic chytrid fungus. Getting past stigma attached to particular species and locales, we found that parasites are nonetheless emerging within the biotechnology marketplace. Global commerce is generating hypervirulent strains of disease that threaten to disrupt human dreams and schemes.

This is where it becomes important we understand the big picture view: multiple factors compound, not negate.

Between men having spent some amount of effort and energy actively pushing women out, and marketing decisions having had some influence on creating gendered stereotypes, and those stereotypes having had some impact on diminishing appeal of the field to women, and workplace sexism, hostility and unfair treatment having had some deterring effects against women, and society-wide labor practice changes having some influence on women’s presence in the workforce overall, we have a very cumulative picture in the aggregate that explains the status quo for women in computer science.

None of these variables are singularly explanatory for our present-day situation, but that’s okay: we shouldn’t be looking for a “silver bullet” explanation for it. Expecting there to be one single answer to the question “why are there so few women in Computer Science?” is both reductive of a complex reality and history, and scientifically unconscionable.

The enthusiasm and intensity which abounded during the nine days of shooting The Forgotten Faces resulted, in part, from the participation of most of the members of Playcraft, which formed the core of the cast. The chief location for the film was a dead-end street in Canterbury [Gas Street] which contained the city’s abandoned gas works; to make the area resemble a Budapest street in late October, 1956, small trees were wired to the pavement and piles of rubble were carted in. The shooting was non-stop during daylight hours, and since the script was never completed, Watkins improvised as necessity or good fortune dictated. At one point, for instance, a tourist passed by on his way to a nearby chapel. In a matter of minutes, he was in a soldier's uniform and thrust against a wall, about to be shot. In the final film, this sequence is especially effective because of the tourist's uncanny resemblance to one of the A.V.H. men depicted in John Sadovy's famous photograph of the actual incident. There were no speaking roles for any of the participants, with the exception of the narrator's commentary which was added after the film was edited, so Watkins simply worked with his cast in terms of movement and facial expressions. Finally, after exposing over sixty minutes of film, Watkins spent months editing down his material to its final form of seventeen minutes ... Not only was this period "the happiest" in his entire career as a filmmaker, but, for Watkins, the amateur years were essential. Without them, his work in film most certainly would have taken an entirely different direction. “I think not only did my work artistically stem from my experiences as an amateur, but I think that my ability to fight, to stick it out, and to develop and pursue my own kind of personal vision ... has its roots in that experience.”

There it is - the rising and setting sun, the day, now - held between past and future. In my personal symbology, I take it that even mythical lions dislike being disturbed so, beyond necessary planning, my mind should keep to the present. The trouble is, unless my attention's focussed by an immediate threat, my thoughts slip away, before and behind. One variant of the "nekkid lady" printout that I've not seen mentioned here was the strip-tease. At my PPOE back in the 1960s there was a program that ran on the 1401 (from a tape drive) that allowed the operator to print several picture of a woman on the 1403 printer, removing articles of clothing by changing the sense switch settings. the last printout (with all clothing "removed") put her behind a modesty panel.

Sense switch B changed her to dress to a halter-top and short skirt. Switch C turned it to a tiny bikini. Switch D was the bikini with a "modesty panel" that said something like "Sorry, there are some things you can't do even with an IBM 1401" or "Contrary to popular opinion, even IBM can't do everything!". Switch E changed it to a fully nude Edith, with a caption "See, you really can do anything with an IBM 1401." This image was also available on the Univac 1004 in the early 60s.
