It adds the Sparse Post-Quantum Ratchet, or SPQR, to the existing Double Ratchet to create a new Triple Ratchet which gives our users quantum-safe messaging without taking away any of our existing security promises. It’s being added in such a way that it can be rolled out without disruption. It’s relatively lightweight, not using much additional bandwidth for each message, to keep network costs low for our users. It’s resistant to meddling by malicious middlemen - to disrupt it, all messages after a certain time must be dropped, causing a noticeable denial of service for users. We’re rolling it out slowly and carefully now, but in such a way that we’ll eventually be able to say with confidence “every message sent by Signal is protected by this.” Its code has been formally verified, and will continue to be so even as future updates affect the protocol. It’s the combined effort of Signal employees and external researchers and contributors, and it’s only possible due to the continued work and diligence of the larger crypto community. And as a user of Signal, our biggest hope is that you never even notice or care.     <title>Sista chansen att stoppa att allt privat vi gör kan övervakas</title>

    <dc:creator>mikael</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Snart kan alla privata bilder, filmer och länkar du skickar via till exempel Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram eller Signal automatiskt scannas av. På torsdag väntas EU:s medlemsländer, däribland den svenska regeringen, ställa sig bakom den omstridda lagen om ”chat control”. Men det finns det en sista chans att stoppa massövervakningen i EU-parlamentet och den kommer vi att ta. Vi uppmanar resten av de svenska partierna att göra det också, skriver Hanna Gedin och Jonas Sjöstedt, Vänsterpartiet i EU-parlamentet.

Vänsterpartiet är det enda svenska partiet som konsekvent röstat nej till alla former av chat control i EU-parlamentet sedan 2021. Sedan dess har flera partier följt efter oss. Det välkomnar vi. Regeringspartiernas inställning till lagen, däremot, är splittrad. Såväl Tomas Tobé (M) som Karin Karlsbro (L) har varit starkt kritiska till chat control, medan deras partikamrater i regeringen ställt sig positiva.

Vi vidhåller att chat control är en i grunden dålig idé. Lagen syftar enligt förespråkarna till att förhindra sexuella övergrepp på barn, men i praktiken handlar det om att vi som privatpersoner automatiskt övervakas så fort vi kommunicerar via internet, inklusive i krypterade chattar. Med chat control-lagen öppnas en ny dörr mot radikalt mer övervakning av medborgarna. Har vi väl sagt ja till automatscanning av privata meddelanden är steget inte långt till att i nästa steg tillåta kameror på allmänna platser med automatisk ansiktsigenkänning - något som redan är på plats i en diktatur som Kina. Och varför stanna där? Med AI-tekniken kommer staten och/eller storföretagen snart att kunna övervaka varje steg vi tar. Är det verkligen det samhället vi vill ha?

Svårt att sålla
Även om några av oss kanske tänker att det skulle vara värt att offra en del av den personliga integriteten för att kunna stoppa sexualförbrytare så är de flesta experter överens om att chat control inte ens är ett effektivt verktyg för att stoppa pedofiler. Enligt Stefan Axelsson, professor i digital forensik, missar chat control helt det uttalade målet eftersom filtret ger så många träffar att det blir svårt för poliser och åklagare att sålla i materialet.

Inte ens polisen själv efterfrågar verktyg som chat control. Polisens egen rapport ”Granskning av polisens arbete avseende sexualbrott mot barn” nämner ingenstans att utökad övervakning skulle bidra till att bekämpa sexualbrott mot barn på ett bättre sätt än i dag. Polisen skriver istället att “viktiga framgångsfaktorer för att bedriva en effektiv verksamhet är att vara en attraktiv arbetsplats med god arbetsmiljö som har tillgång till personal med rätt kompetens för uppgiften, samt att förundersökningsprotokollen som redovisas till åklagarmyndigheten håller hög och säkerställd kvalitet i bevissäkringen. Samverkan med andra myndigheter och organisationer är en framgångsfaktor för effektiv verksamhet där barnrättsperspektivet är i fokus.”

Åtgärderna som polisen själva föreslår - en bra arbetsmiljö, kompetent personal och samverkan med andra myndigheter - ställer vi oss helt bakom. Vi kan naturligtvis också tänka oss att tillföra mer resurser till polisen för att bekämpa det stora samhällsproblem som det sexuella utnyttjandet av barn och ungdomar tyvärr är. Det är en diskussion vi gärna deltar i.

Chat control-lagen är tyvärr något helt annat. Vår sista chans att stoppa massövervakningen är att rösta nej till den slutgiltiga uppgörelsen som EU-länderna och EU-parlamentet väntas nå inom kort. Det tillfället tänker vi ta. Vi hoppas att alla andra svenska partier följer vårt exempel.

    <title>”Politiker förstår inte riskerna med Chat control”</title>

Massövervakningsförslaget Chat control 2.0 är tillbaka i en uppsminkad variant. Nästa månad, under Danmarks ordförandeskap, görs ett nytt försök att få ministerrådets stöd. Det reviderade förslaget står fortfarande i strid med våra mänskliga rättigheter och bygger på det naiva antagandet att förövare väljer att använda appar som övervakas. Trots det fortsätter Sverige att stötta förslaget som kräver att allmänhetens kommunikation kan avlyssnas.

Det kontroversiella massövervakningsförslaget har varit polariserande på ett sätt som inte följer den vanliga politiska debatten. Chat control 2.0 är ingen klassisk höger-vänster-fråga. När Europaparlamentet senast röstade om förslaget 2023 rådde tvärtom en sällan skådad enighet mot förslaget. Abir Al-Sahlani (C) sade till DN att hon aldrig hade sett något liknande under sina år i parlamentet.

Här hemma i Sverige råder samma avsaknad av höger-vänster-konflikt. Däremot råder oenighet inom partierna, till exempel inom Moderaterna som genom regeringslinjen stöttar förslaget trots att Moderaterna var motståndare till förslaget under valet till Europaparlamentet 2024.

Samma kluvenhet syns mellan partiernas ställningstaganden och de svenska tidningarnas politiska ledarsidor. Enligt vår omvärldsbevakning har 41 svenska ledarsidor kommenterat förslaget. Samtliga ledarsidor, från yttersta vänstern till yttersta högern, är motståndare till förslaget. Journalist­ förbundet och Tidningsutgivarna stämmer in och varnar för förslagets konsekvenser.

Denna partisplittrande situation grundas sannolikt i att frågan inte är någon åsiktsfråga. Alla vill bekämpa barnövergrepp och stoppa spridning av barnövergreppsmaterial. Därom råder fullständig enighet. Politikernas splittrade stöd för Chat control 2.0 grundas i att det är en kunskapsfråga. Den handlar om huruvida politikerna har förstått innebörden av förslaget.

Chat control 2.0 är ett tekniskt komplicerat förslag som omgärdas av många myter. Under tiden som förslaget drevs av dåvarande EU-kommissionär Ylva Johansson (S) hävdade hon enträget att möjligheten till total­sträcks­krypterad kommunikation skulle bevaras.

Totalsträckskrypterade konversationer är konversationer som enbart avsändare och mottagare kan läsa. Till skillnad från sociala medier och spelchattar är totalsträckskrypterade konversationer skyddade på ett sätt som förhindrar företagen som driver tjänsterna från att se vad användarna skriver till varandra.

Enligt Johansson skulle förslaget införa teknik som, likt en knarkhund kan sniffa sig till narkotika, kunde sniffa sig till barnövergreppsmaterial i totalsträckskrypterade konversationer. Sådan teknik existerar inte, har aldrig existerat och kommer aldrig att existera.

Detta tvingades förslagets upphovsmän att inse. De har nu omarbetat förslaget så att det inte längre bygger på fantasilösningar. Förslaget kräver i stället att det ska byggas in bakdörrar i totalsträckskrypterade appar så att bilder, videoklipp och länkar kan skannas innan de skickas. Detta är tekniskt genomförbart. Men det är också, bokstavligen, den lösning som FN:s människorättskommissionär varnar för på grund av risken för dataläckor, feldetekteringar, självcensur och ändamålsglidning.

Nu, under det danska EU-ordförandeskapet, görs ännu ett försök att få EU:s ministerråd att ställa sig bakom Chat control 2.0. Även om den senaste revisionen av förslaget är fritt från påhittade skanningstekniker innebär förslaget fortfarande införande av massövervakning av allmänheten (utan brottsmisstanke). I förslaget står visserligen att ingenting i förordningen ska tolkas som att totalsträckskryptering ska förbjudas, försvagas, kringgås eller inaktiveras, men redan i nästa stycke kräver förslaget att bakdörrar som kringgår totalsträckskryptering byggs in i meddelandeapparna.

Ett sådant krav på bakdörrar är inte bara samhällsfarligt utan står också i strid med den kommande svenska Cybersäkerhetslagen. Den införlivar EU:s NIS2-direktiv som uttryckligen skriver att totalsträckskryptering inte bör försvagas eftersom det är ”en kritisk teknik för ett effektivt dataskydd, integritet och kommunikationssäkerhet”.

Parallellt med Chat control 2.0 förbereder Sverige ett nationellt krav på möjlighet att övervaka totalsträckskrypterade konversationer. Försvarsmakten har skrivit ett remissutlåtande där de slår fast att sådan övervakning är omöjlig att genomföra ”utan att införa sårbarheter och bakdörrar som kan komma att nyttjas av tredje part”.

I USA har cybersäkerhetsmyndigheten Cisa gått steget längre och uppmanat folket att byta till totalsträckskrypterade appar. Detta skedde efter att en hotaktör med kopplingar till kinesiska staten hade infiltrerat amerikanska operatörers nät.

Vi kan inte låta våra mänskliga rättigheter och samhällets säkerhet offras av okunskap. Massövervakning förändrar samhället i grunden, och som professor Stefan Axelsson sade till SVT hade inte ens Östtysklands säkerhetspolis Stasi övervakning på nivån som Chat control 2.0 förordar.

Allt vi ber om att är våra folkvalda politiker som fortfarande förespråkar förslaget sätter sig in i dess egentliga innebörd. Förslaget kan stoppas men Sveriges röst behövs och det är bråttom! Det är bara dagar kvar tills partierna fastställer sina positioner inför EU-ministerrådets möte den 13–14 oktober.

    <dc:creator>mikael</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[This thread is so long it's cumbersome, but SillySaurus' post is the only place I found reference to the new RCS 3.0 standard so I'm adding to this thread nevertheless.

RCS 3.0 is a particularly important development because it's an industry standard backed by the GSMA, it's also backed (not yet supported) by Apple, and the 3.0 specification's improvements are intended to facilitate end-to-end-encryption with interoperability across providers.

Theoretically (yeah, yeah, I know... ;) this should enable a form of RCS which FOSS clients/AOSP/GOS could support without necessarily sharing metadata with Google's servers, without using Google's proprietary messaging client, and without needing to run GSF on GOS.

While I wish I could get everyone I know onto Signal, I cannot. So, SMS is still the lowest common denominator when it comes to messaging. This new standard gives me hope that the current messaging situation, lacking in both privacy and security, perhaps isn't permanent.]]></description>

Jag skrev i går om att regeringen själva summerat förslaget som att ”förordningen inte ska förbjuda, försvaga eller kringgå helsträckskryptering”. Ändå är kritiken att förslaget bryter krypterad kommunikation. Varför? Ja, det är det paradoxala. För samtidigt som krypteringen ska respekteras, skrivs följande: ”Spårning/…/på krypterade tjänster föreslås vara möjligt genom så kallad uppladdningsmoderering som innebär att spårning kan ske innan information krypteras och skickas”. Men kryptering är inte kryptering om det kan läsas av någon annan än den som skickar och tar emot. Det här kreativa sättet som först Belgien och nu Ungern tagit fram till EU:s ministerråd omöjliggör kryptering. Det är en paradox, eftersom krypterad kommunikation inte både kan skyddas och övervakas. Kan någon extern part se det, är det inte längre krypterat. Ungerska kompromissförslaget bygger alltså på att bilder, länkar och filmer (inte längre text och ljud) förhandsgranskas innan det skickas av dig. It takes your plaintext files and directories, chops them into gpg-encrypted chunks with encrypted, random filenames, and will upload (and maintain) them, with an efficient, changes-only update, to any SFTP/SSH capable server. My understanding is that the reason people are using borg instead of duplicity is that duplicity forces you to re-upload your entire backup set every month or two or three, depending on how often you update ... and borg just lets you keep updating the remote copy forever. Unfortunately a lot of it is old advice and recommends settings that today might be unsafe. There also isn’t too much information on how to protect your keypair if you use a laptop that might get lost or stolen. Protecting your keypair on a laptop is tricky. On one hand, you need your private key with you to decrypt or sign messages. On the other hand, if your laptop is stolen then you risk losing your entire online identity, perhaps going back years, because the thief would have access to your private key and could then impersonate you. You’d think that today, where laptops and world travel are commonplace, there’d be a little more information on how to secure a private key you have to travel with. But I could only find one resource: the Debian Wiki entry on subkeys. Fortunately it turns out this wiki page has exactly the solution we need.]]></description>

Encryption protects against cybercriminals, industrial competitors, the Chinese secret police and the FBI. You're either vulnerable to eavesdropping by any of them, or you're secure from eavesdropping from all of them.

Back-door access built for the good guys is routinely used by the bad guys. In 2005, some unknown group surreptitiously used the lawful-intercept capabilities built into the Greek cell phone system. The same thing happened in Italy in 2006.

In 2010, Chinese hackers subverted an intercept system Google had put into Gmail to comply with U.S. government surveillance requests. Back doors in our cell phone system are currently being exploited by the FBI and unknown others.]]></description>

And at the same time, we need a very strong internet – we don’t want to create vulnerabilities.

“And the question is, can you open a backdoor for Europol only, or would that at the same time create a vulnerability and open a backdoor for the Russian mafia or third party state spies?     <dc:creator>mikael</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[WhatsApp has the ability to force the generation of new encryption keys for offline users, unbeknown to the sender and recipient of the messages, and to make the sender re-encrypt messages with new keys and send them again for any messages that have not been marked as delivered. The recipient is not made aware of this change in encryption, while the sender is only notified if they have opted-in to encryption warnings in settings, and only after the messages have been re-sent. This re-encryption and rebroadcasting effectively allows WhatsApp to intercept and read users’ messages. The security backdoor was discovered by Tobias Boelter, a cryptography and security researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. He told the Guardian: “If WhatsApp is asked by a government agency to disclose its messaging records, it can effectively grant access due to the change in keys.” Boelter said: “[Some] might say that this vulnerability could only be abused to snoop on ‘single’ targeted messages, not entire conversations. This is not true if you consider that the WhatsApp server can just forward messages without sending the ‘message was received by recipient’ notification (or the double tick), which users might not notice. Using the retransmission vulnerability, the WhatsApp server can then later get a transcript of the whole conversation, not just a single message.”]]></description>
