I hate those blinking, moving ads, auto-play videos, and all the other cruft that websites use to try to get you to click, click, click somewhere, rather than read the article that attracted you in the first place.

Fortunately, there are ways to avoid the most egregious annoyances on the web. Some of them can be easily muted using browser plug-ins, like the five that I use with Safari to make my browsing experience a lot better. (Note: some of these plug-ins also have equivalents for other browsers, such as Firefox and Chrome.)

To this end, we designed Glasnost tests that enable you to check whether traffic from your applications is being rate-limited (i.e., throttled) or blocked.

Glasnost tests work by measuring and comparing the performance of different application flows between your host and our measurement servers. The tests can detect traffic shaping in both upstream and downstream directions separately. The tests can also detect whether application flows are shaped based on their port numbers or their packets' payload. For more details on how Glasnost tests work, please read our NSDI 2010 paper.

It’s not because I think those efforts are somehow not worthy of his memory. It’s just that I have my own recollections of the man. And I’m very jealous in guarding them. I don’t want those few and fleeting memories fractured and confused by other people’s interpretations.

Consider that a fair warning, because I’d like to recount a few of my own stories about Steve here. Not only for you, but for myself. Because maybe in the process I can remember him better.

You could use a new system as-is, of course, but performing just a handful of tasks can help ensure that your PC is lean, mean, fully compatible with your hardware, and all-around pleasant for the foreseeable future. Even if you did everything yourself—starting from scratch with a blank hard drive, installing only Windows and Windows Updates—there is still plenty of tweaking to do to optimize a rig and rid it of performance-robbing bloat.

Hannu Karttunen et al. (eds.): Fundamental Astronomy.
The best book covering all of astronomy (also for absolute beginners) AND still going into a lot of detail for special work for people more involved AND presenting excellent graphics and pictures.

Pasachoff: Contemporary Astronomy
Good introductory textbook for the nontechnical reader. It gives a pretty good overview of the important topics, and it has good pictures.

Frank Shu: The physical universe: an introduction to astronomy
This is a really grand book, which covers a huge sweep of physics in its 600-odd pages. Not only does it describe the field of astronomy in great detail, but it also covers in detail the laws of classical and quantum mechanics, atrophysics and stellar evolution, cosmology, special and general relativity; and last but not least, the biochemical basis of life. In fact the last few chapters would make a great addition to a biochemist's library!

Kenneth R. Lang: Astrophysical formulae: a compendium for the physicist and astrophysicist
Here is everything you wanted to know (and more!) about astrophysical formulae on a one-line/one-paragraph/one-shot deal. Of course, the formulae come complete with references (a tad old, mind you) but it's a must for everyone who's working in astronomy and astrophysics. You learn something new every time you flip through the pages!

It is not an attempt to find fault or prove a lens is “better,” as each lens is sure to have its own strengths. My goal is simply to highlight the differences.

This it the latest instalment in my ongoing series looking at how various raw converters handle raw files shot on one of Fuji’s cameras with an X-Trans sensor. In the past I’ve written a good bit about using Iridient Developer and Lightroom for Processing, but a reader asked if there was a workflow for getting good results with just Aperture. I’ve been working on it over the last few weeks, and here’s the results of my experimentation.

Overall, Aperture does a good job with X-Trans files in my opinion. I don’t think it’s quite as good as Iridient Developer, which of all the raw converters that I’ve tried, still gives the most natural and clean looking files. (I’m still testing Photo Ninja by the way). Aperture is a close second, or third mind you. I’ve spent the last few weeks playing around with settings to see just how close I can get it, and while I still can’t match the clean and sharp output of Iridient Developer, I can get it pretty near.

I’m sure most of you will never do such a silly thing, but I did this very silly mistake twice last week! I have a workflow worked out for importing images from my Canon 5DII where I apply a preset on import (more details here) however when I switched to then importing from a card that was shot with my other camera, a Panasonic GF1 I forgot to turn off the option to apply the preset on import resulting in a whole bunch of images with the wrong look applied to them,

Luckily there’s a simple and easy way to fix the problem. Simply select all the images and then go to the “Photos” menu and select “Reset All Adjustments”. This will put your images back to their defaults.
