I'd like to take a moment to introduce you to my mandolin bridge. About 25 years ago, I started playing around with different bridge designs and came up with a simple and not very original observation: If you make the bridge lighter, you'll get more volume, especially in the bass (I think). The only thing was that I had to make a really significant decrease in mass before it was obvious enough for me.

These new one-piece maple mandolin bridges feature several advantages over the traditional two-piece bridges. These advantages usually include more volume; a wider harmonic range with deeper, more resonant bass and clearer, bell-like highs; increased sustain; easier and more stable tuning; and an increased tendency for the mandolin to play in tune with itself.

These advantages result from the violin-bridge-like functioning of a well-designed maple bridge. A maple bridge can resonate and process the sound much more than the conventional designs, and the two fairly short bridge feet then apply the vibrations to the top with the efficiency of a violin bridge. All in all, a good one-piece maple bridge can bring more tone, volume, clarity, and sustain from most mandolins.

These bridges are simple and easy to Between 2002 and 2009 I made and sold about 700 bridges, for many different mandolin-family instruments (mandolin, mandola, mandocello, banjo-mandolin, and octave mandolin or bouzouki, as well as a few for archtop guitar). But first, and also in ongoing experiments, I've made over 100 experimental bridges, of about 40 different designs and over 30 different woods. This page, and the links to it, summarize what I and other bridgemakers have learned.

Many of the old mandolins I work on, arrive with no bridge, perhaps because it is not fixed. I have not found a source of reproduction bridges small enough for the old bowls, so I was forced to start making them myself. Most of the available modern replacement bridges are intended for newer instruments, which generally tend to be carved tops, or have taller bridge heights, so are too substantial. I have taken existing bridges from old mandolins as my models, and for convenience named them after the instrument in question. Below are those I make to date, with prices, that represent the cost of materials, plus something for the hour plus or so it takes to make one.

All Bridges are made by me by hand.

Hello, welcome to my site. I now live/work, repairing mandolins and related instruments, in S. W. France. I decided at the outset to record my passion pictorially for the benefit of others with similar interests. I hope you will find my site useful, whether or not you are restoring an instrument of your own.

Compensated Bridges

As promised, a few words about compensated bridges. The why and the wherefore!

The whole idea of bridge compensation, as noted last month, is to try and get closer to perfect intonation. Because the strings have thickness, which tends to inhibit their ability to vibrate, the actual length needed, for a string to vibrate at the exact frequency required to produce a perfect note, is a little longer than the theoretical scale length. Also, you want the strings to give you different notes, so to achieve this they are all different thicknesses. Consequently all need slightly differing lengths over which to reach perfect pitch. Hence….. compensation.

You would think that there would be a standard formula for bridge compensation, taking into account different scale lengths and string gauges, but I’ve seen nothing simple that approaches this to date. It is as simple to start a bridge’s compensation off in general terms, and fine tune to suit individual string choice and scale length, which remember can vary a fair bit!!

If you are looking at this page it is probably because you have experienced problems in tuning your mandolin. Unfortunately such problems are a fact of life with this instrument! I thought it would be worth analysing some of the difficulties and looking at ways of alleviating them. There is unfortunately no miracle cure, but being aware of what you are up against can help you to focus on the problem.

I'm assuming you've read the instruction books which tell you that you should ensure that the note at the seventh fret of each string should correspond to the note of the next highest string played open. (All the books say this.) This is OK for approximate tuning, assuming your instrument is properly set up (see below), but it will still probably not sound quite right.

Red Henry Type Solid Mandolin Bridge Construction

© Alan Dunwell - 2002
Last Modified: 10/05/2011

The various projects here are listed in chronological order, so the most recent is at the bottom. Jump links provided here in the text.
Red Henry started looking into making mandolin bridges that are single piece rather than adjustable. For the most part he started with a mandolin design bridge and has been working towards a violin looking bridge. He has been posting up his results and those of others on his web pages and on the CoMando mailing list and the designs and development of this type of bridge is off to a good start. I was intrigued by the idea. The first section below shows a detailed process of the first two bridges that I built. A second section below shows less detail but includes modifications or refinements to the process on subsequent bridges built. Project Three is a bridge similar in construction to the shedua one for Greg in the second section. The KA Project is a mandolin I built for a friends 50th birthday and put a shedula (shedua?) solid bridge on. With the TR Project I've changed my design yet again. This reflects Red's success with more recent multi-hole designs. This was for a mandolin for Tom Risner in Texas and included an under-saddle type pickup.
