Identical studies by different labs should yield the same results, yet they often fail to do so. And while competing models or theories in the scientific literature are healthy byproducts of the scientific process, a lack of reproducibility is not.

Why is that a problem? Because the odds are quite good that many biological analyses hinge critically on such points. So the peer reviewers and the community at large need to be able to evaluate them (see this RNA editing kerfuffle for an excellent example of reviewer fail). Yet most bioinformatic pipelines are so terribly described that even with some WAG I can't figure out what, roughly speaking, is going on. I certainly couldn't replicate it, and generating specific critiques is quite difficult in that kind of circumstance.

The Fermilab results said yes, consistent with zero, and the CERN results said no, it's non-zero. A real "irreproducible" disagreement. And dammit, both groups had pride on the line and needed to be right.

So, both groups built new experiments. Both groups looked at each others techniques, and cherry-picked the best ideas. We went back for more funding. The second round of experiments got different results: now the Fermilab result was farther from zero than the CERN result. But by now, the two results were consistent within their respective uncertainties, and also consistent with a non-zero interpretation. That's a win and reproducibility."]]></description>

    <dc:creator>jschneider</dc:creator><description><![CDATA["Anyway, I'm inclined to propose a new R-word to meet my three usefulness criteria above, which is reconstruct, and perhaps then our new journals are Journals of Reconstructable Research. Reconstruction is what we actually do, so it helps if our research is reconstructable. We should acknowledge that there's machinery involved, and see software, scripts and workflows as equipment in the research record to provide the reconstruction kit. In fact the software world is rather good at reconstruct and we can learn from that thinking and tooling for the research record.

A related word that came up last week was restore, as Carole Goble talked about restoration alongside the notions of preservation and conservation introduced in Accelerating Scientists' Knowledge Turns. Similarly our decay experts (research dentistry anyone?) were talking about repair.

Another R-word lurking for some time has been review, but interestingly what we've been hearing recently is re-review - which also accommodates our evolving peer-review models, like post-publication peer review. That's not all. In the Wf4Ever project we now have roification, which means to convert something into a Research Object(!) And my music colleagues are now talking about remixing research as well as music. ☺"]]></description>

    <dc:creator>jschneider</dc:creator><description><![CDATA["Print-on-paper materials are made accessible through a slowly evolved infrastructure of scholarly norms (for example, acknowledgement and citation), genres of technical writing, specialized publishers and distribution channels, libraries, and bibliographies, catalogs and indexes. The infrastructure for publishing and bibliographical access was established by scholars, societies, librarians and publishers. During the second half of the 20th century digital methods made new techniques feasible. (One thinks of Chemical Abstracts, Medline and the Science Citation Index.) It is a creaky system but it works.
No comparable infrastructure is in place yet for data sets, which undermines the credibility of even well-intentioned data management plans. It is not known how bad the situation really is. If one were to pick a random selection of papers reporting the results of federally funded projects completed five or 10 years ago and sought to re-use the data sets they were based on, the effort would probably generate more frustration and embarrassment than success.
