The POS vendor, blaming everything on PCI, says they can only certify their two most recent version (1.2 and 1.3). Voila! All my 1.1 systems are magically no longer compliant and need to be upgraded. It is safe to assume that new a new PCI update will come out again next year. Therefore, the POS vendor has just effectively changed the lifecycle of their software from 5-7 years down to 2. Combine that with a strategy which requires you to retire older POS terminals in order to use the new version, and they now get 40% of the original system cost every two years. The moral of the story is that when companies purchase their software, they should include a clause in the contract that requires the vendor maintain compliance with PCI for a certain period of time or offer free upgrades.

Why Are Women More Religious Than Men? II | Psychology Today

studies show that an individual’s risk preference is strongly related to his or her religiosity both across and within the sexes. Not only are women more risk-averse and more religious than men, but more risk-averse men are more religious than more risk-seeking men, and more risk-averse women are more religious than more risk-seeking women. Further, consistent with this explanation, the sex difference in religiosity is larger in societies where being nonreligious is considered risky (such as in fundamentalist Christian or Muslim societies) than in societies with greater religious freedom, where individuals can freely choose to be religious or not. The sex difference is also smaller in societies where there is no widespread belief that nonbelievers go to hell, such as Buddhist societies.

When the crops flower, they will cross-pollinate, and the organic farmer may have a problem. "If you're marketing your product as organic, or non-GMO [genetically modified organism], and it's contaminated, you can lose your markets; you can lose your certification," Kimbrell says.

The U.S. is one of the most religious countries in the developed world, especially compared to largely secular Western Europe, but faith leaders and educators have long lamented that Americans still know relatively little about religion.

The survey released Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life aimed to test a broad range of religious knowledge, including understanding of the Bible, core teachings of different faiths and major figures in religious history.

While a majority know that public school teachers cannot lead classes in prayer, less than a quarter know that the U.S. Supreme Court has clearly stated that teachers can read from the Bible as an example of literature.

The basic libertarian idea, according to Boaz [Cato Institute's David Boaz, author of Libertarianism: A Primer], is this:

Adult individuals have the right and the responsibility to make the important decisions about their own lives. And our government, today, interferes with that right in a whole variety of ways. It tells us where to send our kids to school, how we have to save for retirement. It tells us what we can smoke and who we can marry.

Boaz says both parties go against these core, libertarian values:

Well, yeah, it's mostly Democrats who want to raise our taxes and tell us how to save for retirement and how to give to charity. But it's mostly Republicans that tell us what we can smoke and who we can marry. So, there are ways that both liberals and conservatives interfere with individual freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

Are you actually worse off in terms of quitting than when you started?

Yes, you are. In a new study, undergrads who smoked at least a half-pack a day on average were asked to keep track of their smoking for several weeks. For all of Week 2, some of the students were asked to try to suppress any and all thoughts about smoking. Not surprisingly, they smoked significantly fewer cigarettes during Week 2 than non-suppressers. But during Week 3, when these students were no longer required to suppress thoughts of smoking, they smoked significantly more cigarettes than non-suppressors!

1. Don't suppress, replace. Decide in advance what you will think about when a thought pops into your mind.
2. Don't suppress, plan. Instead of blocking thoughts, plan an activity in which to engage when thoughts occur.

Participants who had resisted dessert were more likely to smoke during the break (53%) than those who had resisted the less appetizing radishes (34%).

The researchers cite Roy Baumeister's theory on the limits of self-control as a likely explanation. You only have so much self-control before your willpower is exhausted. When your willpower is weakened by resisiting one temptation, you're more likely to succumb to the next.

Smoking cessation interventions that include nutritional counseling or dieting plans have higher failure rates than programs that only focus on quitting smoking.

when you're trying to make a difficult change, save your strength for what matters most.

You can actually measure a drop in blood sugar when people are put in a situation where they have to control themselves. The brain is using extra energy for this self-control. The more energy that people used at one time for self-control, the less likely that those people were to be able to control themselves later.

until well into the 19th century, marriages were generally accepted and appreciated as arrangements connecting families, business inter-ests, members of the same social or economic class or other common denominators.

The husband and wife were not disregarded but, as a couple, were seldom the focal point of each other's emo-tional, intellectual or social life. They had little domestic privacy and rarely spent time alone. Their deepest affections were often reserved for their siblings, relatives and best friends. Many of their activities and interests were gender-specific and, as such, excluded their spouses. Large segments of their life's experiences were conducted independently of each other.

   1. Searches for PVs in all available block devices.
   2. Parses the metadata header in each PV found.
   3. Computes the layouts of all visible volume groups.
   4. Loops over each logical volume in the volume group to be brought online and:
         1. Checks if the logical volume... has all its PVs visible.
         2. Creates a new, empty device mapping.
         3. Maps it (...) onto the data areas of the PVs the logical volume belongs to.

To move an online logical volume between PVs on the same VG, use the "pvmove" tool:

   1. Creates a new, empty device mapping for the destination.
   2. Applies the "mirror" target to the original and destination maps. The kernel will start the mirror in "degraded" mode and begin copying data... to bring it into sync.
   3. Replaces the original mapping with the destination when the mirror comes into sync, then destroys the original.
