The reason for its success, if you can argue that it was ever really successful, wasn't that it was cooler than Facebook. It was because of its proximity to power. The reason it was so popular with activists, extremists, journalists, and shitposters was because what you posted there could actually affect culture. The thing that ties together pretty much everything that's happened on Twitter since it launched in 2006 was the possibility that those who were not in power (or wanted more) could influence those who were. And I don't think it's an accident that a deranged billionaire broke that, nor do I think it's accident that we're suddenly being offered smaller, insular platforms or an offshoot of a Meta app as replacements. The folks in charge clearly don't want that to happen again."

2. "Twitter has too much context; it is a stitchwork of contexts so baroque that it takes real work to get inside them. For Trow and Postman, the televisualization of culture had eliminated the obligation to become cultured: information had to be shorn of complexity to be spoon-fed into the melting mind of the couch potato. Twitter, by contrast, requires some fluency in its dialects to be of any interest. A poster is not a couch potato. A poster is an initiate, a practitioner with specialized knowledge."

3. "Pity the future historians poring over petabytes of subtweets, trying to make sense of it all."

4. "Everyone lives in the world that Twitter has made, regardless of whether they've ever tweeted. This is one way to think about what Twitter is, and what might be lost if it disappears: a network of influence. But such a definition doesn’t explain why Twitter is such fertile soil for the proliferation of contexts and complexes."

But platforms like LiveJournal were producing a digital writer different enough from that mold that it does not seem right to call them both bloggers. LJ was a mash-up of bloglike posts and Myspace-like social networking organized around interests and identities. Blogging was one-way communication: The blogger pontificated, and the audience left comments. The purpose was amplifying the blogger. In contrast, LJ was relational, a two-way conversation between writer and audience. Feminist, queer, Black and other minority communities on LJ encouraged collaboration. Critically, an LJ writer was also a member of the audience. That created a sense of responsibility of one to another." With every media company unabashedly playing the 'We Had It First!' game, reporters' salary and credibility hinges directly on how many stories they break. That entices reporters to become enslaved to certain sources (almost always agents or general managers), push transparent agendas (almost always from those same agents or GMs) and 'break' news before there's anything to officially break. It also swings the source/reporter dynamic heavily toward the source. Take care of me and I will take care of you." When I was researching my most recent book – which mainly focuses on the events of the past three years of my life ... to remind myself of details and events that may have been missing from my more traditional notes. What I found – or rather didn’t find – shocked me. Throughout my earlier archives, I was able to find lengthy, sometimes surprisingly personal, posts – recounting the highs and lows of starting companies, making and losing friends, leaving London, beginning to travel around America and Europe… and countless other published episodes that backed up, and enhanced the contents of my private notebooks. But then, as I clicked forward through the archives to more recent years, something odd happened. At a certain point, the number of posts in each monthly archive dropped off a cliff, particularly where details of my personal life were concerned."

Either in perception or in practice, our reporters are becoming our friends and our friends are becoming the editors of our Twitter-based newspaper."
