How about getting 48 of them here? That's an achievement if you never win the damn thing,'" Lukas said. "Getting them there has gotten to be a lot more difficult than it used to be 20 years ago. Just getting enough points to be in the race and satisfying your clientele ... the clientele dictates so much of what we do now. It's not like the old days, when an owner would ask if he could come look at his horse in the barn. Now they get really involved."

“Our Derby record has been talked about a lot,” said Pletcher, who matched the record of his mentor, trainer D. Wayne Lukas, with his 48th Derby starter. “But I felt like this week people were defending it for me for some reason. You know, when you look at it now, I think this was our 17th Derby, and we’re fortunate enough to have two wins and two seconds and I think three thirds, it looks a little better. To me, it felt like I really needed that second one, you know? One more."

To have that opportunity, to have a potential starter in the Kentucky Derby, it means a lot to the owners," Pletcher said. It's a very, very exciting time."

Pletcher’s uncoupled betting interests? A different story ...

"In the last 3 years, Todd Pletcher has had multiple entrants (uncoupled for wagering purposes) in 327 races. He’s won 145 of those races, an eerily similar strike rate to Baffert’s–44%. Meanwhile, those uncoupled entries total 678 starters, bringing his strike rate with these types down to 21%, in line with more typical Pletcher numbers and, once again, right in line with how Baffert’s results looked. The similarities hold up a bit longer. In the 308 races where Pletcher has precisely 2 starters, the shorter-priced horse won 94 of ‘em, or 30%, with an ROI of $1.86. But then Pletcher takes a turn for the better. His longer-priced uncoupled betting interests won 42 of the 308 races, nearly 14%, and the ROI on this “blind” bet is in fact positive: $2.01 for every $2 bet."

He currently is the top trainer in North America with nearly $12 million in purse earnings. His 26 victories here, at the most competitive and prestigious meet of the summer, top the standings, and he is two victories out of first place at Monmouth. To spend a day with him is to appreciate up close an extraordinary feat of choreography, in which high-tech wizardry is as necessary as plain old horse sense, and where gallows humor, straight talk and a little Spanish all must be deftly employed. Over the course of a single day -- Aug. 13 -- Pletcher touched 100 horses and oversaw the training of another hundred working at tracks up and down the East Coast."
