I hunger for Picard’s return precisely because of the optimism and dignity of The Next Generation. A little change to the character to reflect the passage of time — and, perhaps, a rougher Star Trek universe than we last saw in the 24th century — would make sense. But as we struggle to deal with the reality of a world where might and right are increasingly equated, a world back on verge of possibly cataclysmic conflict between superpowers, I still hope to see him hold fast, in the face of adversity, to the humanistic spirit of reason and intellectual hunger."

Faced with a woman’s story, we’re overtaken with the swift taxonomic impulse an amateur astronomer feels on spotting Sirius—there it is! he says, and looks to the next star. It’s a pleasant activity because it organizes and confirms, but it produces the fantasy that a lazy reading—not even a reading but a looking—is adequate, sufficient, complete, correct.

2. We have not yet learned to see within female ugliness the possibility of transcendent art the way we do its male counterpart, and however far we’ve come since 2013 thanks to shows like Insecure, Getting On, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Fleabag, and Catastrophe, we still have not quite learned to see female storytellers as either masterful or intentional. [Interesting that the list of "shows like" doesn't date to 2012 and include Girls, which gets a glancing and grudging mention later.]

1. Industry execs expect significant moves from Facebook — which hasn't hidden its hankering for sports. Earlier this month, the company hired Peter Hutton, CEO of Discovery-owned Eurosport, to lead its negotiating team for live-streaming sports deals, sources confirmed to Variety. He's expected to join Facebook after the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. Hutton comes aboard after embarking on a search to recruit a sports dealmaker who will have "a few billion dollars" to vie for global rights deals, according to a Sports Business Journal report. Meanwhile, the social giant last fall entered a $600 million bid for five-year rights to Indian Premier League cricket matches, ultimately losing to Star India (which bid $2.6 billion for TV and streaming rights).

2. The other key opportunity for Twitter is to stake a claim on less popular sports that aren't widely available on TV. "We know that on Twitter if you care about the WNBA, the NWHL, lacrosse, cycling or fencing, we can serve those audiences well," says Noto.

3. Not everyone believes exclusive live sports really are a long-term strategic fit for the likes of Amazon or Facebook ... There's a natural framework for sports rights, he says: "Long term, I just don't see technology companies — the FANG [Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google] group — really doubling down on all these rights." That's especially true, Gandler adds, given that Amazon can see a higher return by acquiring a real asset like Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, as opposed to renting sports rights for a couple billion dollars over a few years.

4. To ESPN's Magnus, the world is a long way from streaming platforms being the exclusive solution for leagues and other rights holders. He views tech companies as the latest team of competitors, and notes that ESPN has long faced well-funded rivals ... "I first heard of a 'sports-rights bubble' 15 years ago."

"The novel took as one of its great subjects the calamitous realization that you have to live with your marriage. Now that we don’t really have to live with our marriages, or enter them in the first place, the choice of whom, if anyone, to settle down with is not a great subject but a middling one—about sitcom-sized, it turns out. And the grown-up questions we ask ourselves when deciding whether to stay or go, to marry or not, don’t hinge quite as much on the idea of a right or wrong choice as on a rough sense of timing: when, if ever, is the right time to write the marriage into our lives? How much felicity can we plausibly expect from a partnership entered in our youth? Would we lose too many potentially interesting plot twists if we committed to one person right now? And if we end up disappointed by marriage, will it have been because we chose the wrong man, or simply that we chose him when we were only about a third of the way through our own personal comedies?"

Rosenberg argues that one of the factors driving the anger against the show is that in the media, women who look like Dunham are rarely given agency. They’re the funny best friends, or the goofy girls the protagonist sleeps with but doesn’t tell his friends about, or the crazy bitches the protagonist tries to get away from. The world of entertainment still, all too often, values women only as objects of beauty to be placed on screen and ogled. I have no problem looking at a beautiful woman, but the world is full of other women who have profound, intelligent, often hilarious things to say, and Dunham is very quietly making a space for those voices on TV, in a way that’s revolutionary both in terms of the show’s gender politics and in terms of its presentation."

Multiple views of the same event are possible as well as other interactive features. You could be watching a track that has developed a website and/or an application that enables you to watch the simulcast signal in high definition and pull up past performances on the TV screen as well. Multiple camera angles are possible which I would love to see since I like to watch horses breaking from the gate and going around the turn on the steward's view of the race instead of the pan shot. Having both on the screen simultaneously or allowing me to pick and choose which angle I want to watch would be awesome."
