"We've been communicating, in talks with various top-of-the-line operators. Because of the sort of strategic and competitive sensitivities, we don't feel like we can give a lot of detail about exactly what's happening [with] negotiations, but we're moving forward," Barnett said. "Call Me Mr. Vain, ridden by Angel Stanley and trained by Mario DeStefano, started from post two. He earned his 11th win of 2003, covering the six furlongs in 1:15. The The Flordia-bred 9-year-old Fiery Best gelding paid $2.80 in the win-only wagering event as the 2-5 favorite.

"'I'm elated,' said DeStefano, who owns Call Me Mr. Vain with John Mendes. 'This was a race between two evenly-matched horses and they were heads apart from flag-fall to finish. And the crowd was into it all the way.'

"The victory was worth $8,000."

"In 2003, Lamberty took great pride in forming a small Suffolk-based racing stable with those same hometown buddies with whom he used to sneak into the track. Their very first acquisition ended up exceeding expectations to race at Saratoga. Lamberty later rose through the ranks at Centennial Farms, where he was the point-person for the syndicate's clients into the early 2010s. He especially relished his roles in helping to select young horses at sales and giving insights on the progression of racing prospects. Friends who recalled a storm-soaked P-Lam celebrating with unbridled enthusiasm at Monmouth after Corinthian splashed home first in the 2007 GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile for Centennial will probably never encounter a happier rain-drenched racetracker."

There was a time when there were tracks in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine. They are all gone, leaving an entire region of the country that once embraced racing without a single track ... my favorite track, maybe of all time, was Suffolk Downs. I had an affinity for a hardscrabble, blue-collar, unpretentious track nestled between oil tanks where much of the racing was conducted during the harsh New England winter. For those who prefer Saratoga, Del Mar, Santa Anita, I don't expect you to understand."

"The end of Suffolk is sad for many other reasons. It continues to stun me that an area that had active Thoroughbred racing at Suffolk, Rockingham, Narragansett, Lincoln Downs, Scarborough Downs, Green Mountain and the Brockton, Weymouth, Marshfield, Northampton, Great Barrington, and Berkshire Downs fair circuit, and which offered day/night Thoroughbred racing all year long, now, after this weekend, no longer has any live Thoroughbred racing whatsoever ... I suppose the demise of tracks like Longacres, Ak-Sar-Ben, and the tracks in Detroit are somewhat analogous. But given the history involved, I don't think we've seen a dissolution of Thoroughbred racing in an entire geographical region that includes a major U.S. city quite like this. And it's very tough to take."

When the track opened 84 years ago, Mort Mahony was responsible for installing the parimutuel wagering system, which he had done two years earlier at Rockingham in New Hampshire. Mahony had spent more than three decades running betting rings at tracks up and down the East Coast and in the Midwest, working for legendary bookmaker John Cavanaugh, before parimutuel wagering was legalized. In 1911, he installed the first mutuels at Woodbine in Canada when it became the first track in North America to have fully operational machine wagering.

Mahony's son, Briggs, and grandson, Pat, followed him into the business. Pat, who ran the mutuels at Hialeah, Calder and Gulfstream in Florida, and at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga in New York, before retiring in 2016, was on hand for the Suffolk Downs finale yesterday, which included the Mort Mahony Classic in the ninth, and penultimate, race on the card.

"I am heartsick about it," Mahony said of the end of live racing. "I had to be here today. Mort was here at the beginning and this is the end. I wouldn't miss it."

A state bill to shift the rules for the entire industry is on hold in the Legislature. Tuttle said a five- to 10-year license would help the company pump money into the Fairgrounds property."

What isn't there is a one-mile oval or a turf course. It’s located only a few hundred feet from the historical society’s headquarters at the Wheeler House. Leveille also shared a personal anecdote about sneaking into a race almost 45 years ago: 'During Fair Week in September of 1973, I was in college and didn’t have much money. My buddy Rich Fitzgerald and I wanted to go to the Barrington Fair, but didn't want to spend our limited funds on tickets to get in. They weren't cheap. So, we borrowed cowboy hats from someone, walked toward the back of the fair where the horses were stabled. We starting talking about Secretariat, the thoroughbred racehorse that won the triple crown that year, and just pretended that we were part of the racing crowd. It worked. Nobody questioned us, and we got in for free.' Reaction from the town has been positive, though it’s not clear what kind of regulatory hurdles SSD will have to clear to get the project green-lighted."

"The leasing of Great Barrington means the sport could continue in the state. Purses are enhanced by revenue from operating casinos, so there will be enough money to sustain a longer season. But the relocation comes with a big caveat. In order to pull off the deal, Sterling Suffolk said it needs help from the state Legislature. Chip Tuttle, chief operating officer of Sterling Suffolk, said the arrangement will hinge on the passage of a measure, already before the state legislature, that would expand the ways casino revenues can be used for horse racing. Tuttle said such a change is necessary to defray some of the about $10 million it would cost to move racing to Great Barrington and renovate the facilities there."

Such an uncreative, copycat concept for the site displays neither vision nor an understanding of what the community has been working toward for many years. What’s worse, the idea that Assembly Square is being touted as a model for Suffolk Downs misses the point of making Suffolk Downs a best-in-class transit oriented development. Assembly Square is certainly not a model for Suffolk Downs. Assembly Square is a haven for cookie-cutter, generic 'anywhere in America' big-box stores and office centers with an abundance of parking that say 'drive in, shop, work, and drive away' – not a particularly sustainable or appealing message."

1. “The only purpose of keeping the place open was to keep racing alive while the horsemen explored the concept of an equestrian center,” said Lou Raffetto, the former vice president of racing at Suffolk and now a consultant to the New England HBPA and the manager of the meet when Suffolk races. “We don’t believe right now that the right thing to do was to run a full meet. I sat down as a conduit with horsemen and management and advised them that racing had to stay visible and viable to show people that if done properly it can be fun and exciting.”

2. Raffetto believes there will be ample opportunities for local horsemen to run if his group and backers can get the equestrian center to become a reality. He sees it existing in the western part of the state and including not just a racetrack, but sections for dressage, hunter jumpers, 4-H clubs and even horse retirement. But it won’t be cheap. He says building the racetrack will cost $60 million and the entire facility will cost about $150 million. Raffetto sees the equestrian center track racing about 75 days a year with purses averaging $200,000 a day.”

Michael Blowen remembers: "We have a horse here at Old Friends named Summer Atttraction, who I think just turned 23, that I owned. Carlos ran him as a 2-year-old in a two-furlong maiden race at Suffolk Downs in a four-horse field in 1997 on a big day. One of the other horses was owned by Jim Moseley (Suffolk's late track owner and a prominent owner and breeder) and that horse cost over $200,000. Summer Attraction, whom I paid $5,000 for, won. So Carlos decided to next run him at Saratoga in the Sanford (G3). The race came up so tough that Favorite Trick (eventual 2-year-old champion and 1997 Horse of the Year) scratched out of it. In the paddock, the reporters all wanted to talk to Carlos even though Nick Zito, Wayne Lukas, and the other big-time trainers were there with their horses. Carlos told them, 'If my horse wins, they're going to rename the race Sanford & Son.' My horse ran two furlongs and stopped cold. That story sums up The King."

At this time, plans would include 75 live Thoroughbred racing days but the funding mechanisms are not yet in place.

"The reason we called this meeting is that we need everybody working together to make this happen," said NEHBPA President Anthony Spadea, who said this was his fourth attempt to unify the factions. "We're doing everything we can to keep live racing going in Massachusetts. Please give us a shot. If you support it, we have a chance.

"There is nothing else. No one is interested in building a racetrack alone anymore. No one is building a racetrack without a casino these days," he continued.

More recent converts might be surprised, and a bit envious, to know that there was day/night Thoroughbred racing all year long ... I wouldn't trade the education I received at these tracks for anything. Or the fun I had. Suffolk and Lincoln or 'Gansett doubleheaders were commonplace, as were Rockingham and Scarborough doubleheaders. Heck, on some Labor Days, tripleheaders were made. Rockingham always ran a five-race morning card on Labor Day followed by an afternoon card, but you could (and I did) catch Rock's morning card, take in the afternoon card at Suffolk (which foolishly went head to head with Rockingham some years), and then shoot down to Lincoln or 'Gansett, whichever track was racing. There were also plenty of Saratoga and Green Mountain doubleheaders made. I always found it disconcerting that the jocks at Green Mountain would often play volleyball in the infield in front of the tote board before the races, as friendly as can be, like a family, and then would go out and ride, presumably against each other, for their small cut of a $900 purse."

Revere’s first-year mayor, Brian Arrigo, said Waterfront Square could be a proving ground for economic development, adding Revere to the list of inner-ring suburbs with potential for job creation.

His immediate predecessor, Dan Rizzo, backed a proposed $1 billion casino at Suffolk Downs racetrack that lost out to Steve Wynn’s Mystic River site in Everett. And a statewide ballot question in November would open the door to a potential slots parlor at a trailer park property in Revere next to Suffolk Downs. But Arrigo says it’s time for the oceanfront city to look beyond gaming as an economic savior.

“The fact that there’s so much interest in Revere along the Blue Line, we might be selling ourselves a little bit short if we want to go forward with that,” Arrigo said. “Now that our chances of having a casino are gone, we have an opportunity to build an economy, really.”

A former city councilor with private-sector consulting experience, Arrigo sees potential for luring a corporate headquarters to the 38-acre former Wonderland Greyhound Park. The property was acquired by the owners of the Suffolk Downs in 2010 after Massachusetts voters banned greyhound racing. The city has discussed a master plan with ownership to encourage redevelopment of the property ...

And speculation continues to swirl around the development potential of Suffolk Downs itself, where a limited schedule of just six live races is taking place this summer and fall.

“It’s the elephant in the room, and I look forward to working and discussing with (Boston) Mayor (Martin) Walsh on a collaborative effort to make sure everyone’s on the same page,” Arrigo said.
