Most of the work was done late into the night. It wasn’t until the early 1980s, when Pfander retired, that he decided to make a concerted effort to track down each of the ones he was already missing. The search went on for a few more years until, eventually, just one box score remained — a game during the first season of the BAA between the St. Louis Bombers and Detroit Falcons. Traveling with his wife on business to Lansing, Pfander used a bit of free time to make his way to a state library. He can’t remember the paper, but while cranking the dial of the microfilm viewer, he scrolled just past what he knew was a box score. Like that, almost half a century’s worth of work was done. To date, his collection includes nearly 54,000 games ..."

"Belmont longshot Matuszak is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Mott has nearly 15,000 starters since 1991, but only 15 of them were in 12-furlong dirt races. Roughly 1 of every 1000 starts, yikes. But it’s Mott. He’s 3 for 15 in those dirt marathons, and when including all surfaces, he goes to 47/277, 17% winners. Despite his paucity of starts going 12 furlongs on dirt, we have to upgrade Mott simply for his success with 12 furlong turf runners–Mott’s had runners go to the winners’ circle 44 times after turf races. If you owned a Belmont horse, wouldn’t you feel comfortable with Mott doing the coaching? The further away the 2010 Belmont gets, the more the 13-1 on Mott-trained Drosselmeyer seems like a gift."

He’s won 145 of those races, an eerily similar strike rate to Baffert’s–44%. Meanwhile, those uncoupled entries total 678 starters, bringing his strike rate with these types down to 21%, in line with more typical Pletcher numbers and, once again, right in line with how Baffert’s results looked. The similarities hold up a bit longer. In the 308 races where Pletcher has precisely 2 starters, the shorter-priced horse won 94 of ‘em, or 30%, with an ROI of $1.86. But then Pletcher takes a turn for the better. His longer-priced uncoupled betting interests won 42 of the 308 races, nearly 14%, and the ROI on this “blind” bet is in fact positive: $2.01 for every $2 bet."

While in 2010, the decrease of foals against 2009 was 12.7, in the next two years it was 10.3 and 6.2% respectively). Last year the decrease was just 2.1% according to assessment. The United States, however, provide another perspective on the causes of the decrease, although the relation to the economic crisis is more than clear -- the number of races decreases. While in 1980 to 1989 North America saw 463,818 races, in the next decade it was just 375,308, in 2000 to 2009 368,154."

But even though none of Baffert’s seven horses that died of sudden death syndrome showed any evidence of illegal drugs in their systems, the lynching party to hang Baffert for these deaths will continue if he, as expected, makes a run at the Triple Crown. Bottom line is the CHRB can’t suspend Baffert for horse deaths. If it turns out something nefarious was done to cause their deaths, and Baffert was responsible as the trainer of record, then the CHRB has something on him and should move on it the way they did with O’Neill. But Rick Arthur said Thursday that 'the work is done' regarding the necropsies and investigation into the deaths. While it looks terrible for Baffert to lose seven horses to sudden death in such a short period of time (16 months), no sanctions have been taken against him."

Several trainers and owners said they could not remember losing a horse to a heart attack or an unexplained occurrence. 'I’ve had thousands of horses in my barn, and I’ve seen them die from colic or break bones or get an illness, but I don’t think there was but maybe one who just dropped dead,' said Gary Contessa, who has been training horses for 38 years, primarily in New York."

Most of the deaths of Baffert runners, with the exception of two horses who collapsed after a race, occurred during training hours. All of the Baffert horse deaths took place at the track now known as Betfair Hollywood Park."

Correction: http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ray-s-paddock/chrb-no-spike-in-sudden-equine-deaths/ "The California Horse Racing Board said the number of non-musculoskeletal sudden deaths of horses in racing and training at California racetracks has not spiked, contrary to an article published in the Paulick Report Wednesday. Dr. Rick Arthur, the CHRB’s equine medical director, said the number has been relatively constant over the last three years: 20 sudden death in fiscal year 2010-11; 19 in 2011-12; and 17 to date for 2012-13 (the fiscal year ends June 30)."

A meeting conducting entirely on an all-weather/synthetic track, with a percentage of 0.19% CEDNFs, would have just nine non-finishers who never raced or worked again. An all-turf meeting would have 12 CEDNFs, based on the percentage of 0.26%.
